Hey, for $140, you're set! Do what you can with it. Play with it. Make some money with it then splurge on the newest one~! :D

Sad but true. I'm not at all opposed to bringing a Mac into the family for almost any reason, but if cost was a concern - as it seemed to have been here - I think there are better ways to get Mac-ified under budget without getting stuck with legacy. I guess there's not much point worrying about it now though as the purchase has been made and, being used, likely there's no return. ;)

I think WWDC is the official expiry date for all Apple products. After that, they're all legacy. :)

While I unfortunately have no sage advice to offer, I'm just wondering why in the world you would buy a PowerPC Mac at this point. Sure it may be able to run some stuff for a little while, but its days are extremely numbered, even more so than WinXP. Apple is much more serious about its forced obsolescence.

+1

Microsoft has always been about backwards compatibility, while Apple is always about getting you to abandon your current religious paraphernalia for newer baubles.

The ability to remotely delete content is damning as far as I can see, with much more serious implications than just purchased books. For phones and tablets, could you run a business on them with the shadow of that eternally hanging over your shoulder? Could you deal with having things wiped? A sales guy is out in the field, visiting a potential customer and goes to pull up some... oh, wait... it's gone... Ummm... Who looks like the idiot?

I don't agree with everything Stallman says, but he's got some very good points. Here he's bang on.

DRM would be ok if it actually worked to enable people. But it doesn't. And I can't see the behemoths of industry endorsing a version of DRM that does work well.

^Okay, 65 sounds better...You're forgiven...Except for the iPhone part.  :D

In fairness, I have the same kind of problem on my Android. The problem is the form factor. It's meant for 10 year old girls, and not grown men with thumbs that are a half the size of the screen width. Chicklet keyboards are an improvement though. I wish my phone had one. I'd also like it if it had a slide out keyboard and the keyboard part were the heavily weighted one. (Better for balance.)

Apple will continue to get a free ride as long as Steve Jobs is alive. Once he's gone it will be open season on Apple because it will finally get called on all the problems many in the tech press are reluctant to acknowledge.

Perhaps so, but I bet they wait three days before drawing any conclusions...  :D

Groan~! (But much agreed~!)

Because if I lose my data, that'll suck. But if you lose my data, somebody's gonna get hurt... :)

Hehehe~! I love that~!  ;D

Sort of on topic...

I had a server with Layered Technologies. Raid 1 mirrored. A drive died. Server went off-line. They f**ked the other drive and formatted it...

I don't think I need to say how I felt about that.

I think it would depend on the intended use of the application. If it's an internal use only project, then shortcutting with a hard coded select is fine. In a pinch I've used a function to insert a select so in can be used in multiple places and only have to be edited in one.

But if it's going to be a released to the masses project, then hard coding anything makes it an inflexible pain in the neck for whoever is trying to get it dialed in for their specific purposes. There's just no anticipating the kind of crap people will think of to need... ;)

Good points. That makes a massive difference.

It seems to me that the real question is whether or not the values would change in the database. If not, then why constantly make the same trip to the database to get the values?

You're just putting on addition overhead that isn't necessary.

Now, you could read from a static file, and that would be less overhead, but solve the problem. You just put a trigger in the database and write the new file whenever values change.

I don't like hard coding unless there's a good reason. But if it's something that isn't going to change, or if it is only going to change on exceedingly rare occasions where you are doing development anyways, then it can make sense to hard code. You avoid overhead. Granted, it's not likely much, but it could become important if you have many decisions like that to make. Many drops fills the glass.

However, I would want to have the information in the database anyways. I like domain constraints. They keep things neat and tidy.

Just my $0.02 anyways.

Is it just me or does this pattern sound familiar:

Given *ANY* technological or software announcement X,
  • If that same announcement X was made by Microsoft: It's boring and not worth anyone mentioning it anywhere.
  • If that same announcement X was made by Google: It's breathlessly significant engineering feat and tecnological world changer discussed by every website on planet for a month (after which everyone can forget about it until the next new beta announcement).
  • If that same announcement X was made by Apple: It's a Business Marketing Masterpiece bound to shake up the computer industry.

Sounds about right.

This is a good read:

Final analysis
All that said, let me try to boil this down into two sentences that shouldn’t surprise you. For Google, the Web is the center of the universe. For Apple, your device is the center of the universe.

Can they both be right?

I'm not sure... For the layman, I'm leaning towards device. For the savvy, I'm leaning towards web... Still... Tough call.

And it probably did sound macish... Yeah... I admit it... I sometimes like shiny things.

No crime in liking shiny blingy things. I happen to love the weird, utterly ludicrous retro looks (and equally unique sounds) of guitars built by Mike Eastwood so who am I to criticize.  8)
Those are very douchy looking guitars, I must admit!  According to several people, a guitar like that should be played by someone like this: (see attachment in previous post)

Grrr... Dem's iz fightin' werdz~! Put up yer dukes!~

If an Eastwood is good enough for Bubbles, it's good enough for me~!

@Ren - Can I use your line in my script as the response from the female character when the gentleman finally tells her what it is? It sounds sooooo Mac-user! (kidding...just kidding) :P

Yes. And feel free to mangle it any which way you want. I hereby license it under the WTFPL. :)

Well, the download is rather inconvenient. They don't have a central repository. So, still downloading... I suppose it will take a few days though. There's a LOT of stuff. 1 file is almost 200 MB, and there are quite a few more...

I read the review, but it just didn't inspire me. It sounded like yet another "minimalistic, fast, blah blah blah" distro. The review wasn't remotely compelling for me. I didn't see anything that really said, "try this".

Post back and let me know if it's worth looking at.

I'm seeing tons of complaints from past SoftLayer fans on their forum and on the webhostingtalk.com forum; seems like a general consensus is forming that since the merger with ThePlanet hosting company, SoftLayer is definitely having some issues..

Odd... They were both good companies. Is this just a growing pain do you think?

Alternative opinion

He doesn't point out anything about GoDaddy that's bad.

The only problem seems to be that he didn't know how to seamlessly move a domain and keep DNS working, and that the people he moved to took 2 days to respond. Hardly seemed like a GoDaddy problem.

As for GoDaddy's panel, it's excellent. They've improved a lot of things in it as well.

I've used other registrars, and none were as good as GoDaddy. That's usually because of the control panel though. GD has a very good one. Others are pretty poor.

Regarding NoDaddy.com. Meh... Dunno. There will always be a few problems, but it's not like that's the norm.
