Official Announcements / Re: June 2009 Discounts and Giveaway
« Last post by MilesAhead on May 30, 2009, 03:56 PM »
It's not a stupid question.. the prices are set high in the shop so that people don't buy those items.  We prefer to give them away as presents rather than sell them.

And here I thought they were priced high like those PBS pledge drive deals where you pledge $100 and they give you a $10 VHS movie. (Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned it.  Might give you ideas.) :)

Living Room / Re: Looking for a newsgroup news reader
« Last post by MilesAhead on May 29, 2009, 09:20 PM »
For downloading multiple binary files, I like XNews, but for browsing and reading newsgroups, I have yet to find anything that compares to MicroPlanet Gravity, once a commercial app, but now open-source and free.

http://mpgravity.sourceforge.net/

Wow! It's been quite awhile since I tried Gravity.  Totally forgot about it.  Nice free reader for text groups. For what it's worth I just set it up on Vista64 and it seems to work fine. Also
W7 32 bit no problem I can see so far.

I thought the idea was a virus would put some autorun nasty on your USB key while it was plugged in.  Then the next time you insert it, whammo!!  Like, some people leave the thing in for that ReadyBoost or RamBoost or whatever that Vista thing is that uses USB for performance enhancement.

And yeah, I usually turn off the the autostart stuff.  Although in W7 I haven't bothered because it pops up a prompt rather than going ahead and doing anything. I've been closing the dialog.  Of course that's my secondary PC so I don't use it that much anyway.  Surfing unknown sites with Sandboxie on mainly.. and testing my apps.

Miles -- if ReOpen is "Folder Cache Only Better".. why is Folder Cache still maintained?

I do updates there first.  Besides, maybe some people are only interested in recent folders.  Less memory usage with only one list.

edit: the other consideration too is that ReOpen uses WMI scripting to get the process name from the active window.  If you are only interested in folders it's better to use Folder Cache as it's slightly less CPU and resource intensive generally. It would actually run on versions of Windows prior to XP if compiled with an older version of AutoIt.

7280
Build 3.0.0.16 eliminated duplicate code that may have slowed populating the folder list.  Should be snappier now.
7281
Build 2.5.0.13  I eliminated some duplicate code that slowed populating the lists.  The Program list should load in snappy fashion now.
7282
That's an interesting article.  I haven't tried it myself but I wonder if it would be effective to have an empty autorun.inf marked read-only and owned by the Administrative(the real one) account?  Seems like a method that's actually on the USB key would be the best? Although I don't know enough about the file system to figure out if it can mark ownership that way(assuming you'd be plugging the thing into various Windows machines here and there.)

General Software Discussion / Re: computer repair software
« Last post by MilesAhead on May 28, 2009, 11:30 PM »
I've seen people use version control software as problem tracking.  I know there are free version control programs out there.  But I'm not familiar with them. I just know some can be adapted to repair tracking or bug tracking type stuff. I would think some would be able to generate reports.
7284
Added heuristic to list display as I had some reports the program list was slow to fill.  It should be snappier loading up now.

ReOpen build 2.5.0.12

ReOpen 2.5 released.  Debugged the input filter and also added a Stack button and some memory optimizations.  With the Stack button you can select items, and hit the Stack button to add them to the launch stack.  When done, hit the Open Selected button or right click the most to launch all.  Note that if you double click the mouse on an item, it still only launches that single item.

The Stack makes it convenient to filter and add to stack instead of scrolling looking through the stuff.  The input also has a negation or NOT function.  To show all folders in the list that are not on drive C: use a filter of '!c:' (without the quotes).

Likewise to see folders other than documents you could do !docu  etc..
Don't worry too much about adding duplicates to the stack. If something is already in the stack it's not added again. The stack is destroyed with every window close.  So if you change your mind and don't want to launch anything, just hit the Esc key.

At present I just use a Tooltip to indicate how many items were pushed on the stack.  Later I may change it to a user selectable notification, like a sound or some color change or something.  I'll wait awhile to see if the functionality is solid first.

Folder Cache 3.0 Beta now has a "Stack Selected" button. This way you can filter the list with the input filter, push some items on the stack, then use another filter or show all, to find additional items. When you launch, any items in the Stack will be opened in addition to any selected items in the list. This way you don't need to reopen the window after a filtering operation and launch. Just stack 'em up until you're ready to open the items.

Currently I just use a tooltip as notification that some items were pushed on the Stack. Later I may give a choice of sound or some other notification.. once all the bugs are killed off.

Once Folder Cache seems stable I'll add the feature(s) to ReOpen.

Found a bug. Uploaded build 3.0.0.2

Hopefully "Delete Selected" button works correctly when the filter is used, on this build.

General Software Discussion / Announcement: Folder Cache 3.0 Beta

Folder Cache 3.0 Beta sports a list filter to make finding folders fast. Max out the Maximum Folder setting to 64 because now you can type a few letters to filter the folders shown in the list.

Seems to work pretty well. Just calling it a Beta to give people a chance to hammer it around and see if they find any side effects or have any input(no pun intended.)

Heh.  Sounds like a variation on "nothing new under the sun." But I don't care what anyone says, Safin lifted my joke!! It was way too specific to be coincidence. :)

Shows he has a good sense of humor anyway.

v. 2.3 fixed a bug that corrupted program list when Max setting changed with the spin button.

Got rid of lame progress bars.  Didn't look as good as I thought they would.
Hopefully it's more stable than ever now, since the logic is improved.

I think somebody stole an idea of mine for some gadget, but my memory is so bad I don't remember what it was.  The one thing I know for sure is that Marat Safin, the tennis player, stole one of my jokes.  He told it well though.  At least he got a laugh. :)

Heh… and someone just "took" my idea ;)

Hmmmmm maybe there was a point to it being a video because when I read what you suggested I didn't get it.  But the video removes any ambiguity. Now aren't you sorry you didn't break out the chicken outfit?  :)

I finally got rid of that pesky error dialog if a 2nd instance is launched.  Now the 2nd instance quits quietly.  Fixed version available for download now.

And what if she/he wasnt a spammer, or probing for vulnerabilities, and you scared him/her away?

I agree.  You should open that unexpected parcel post.  That way if it's a bomb, you can hear the ticking with less difficulty. :)

You could try searching on the AutoIt3 Forum

Seems to me I remember something about .NET without having to do DllRegisterServer but I don't recall the details or which post.  Use the search engine there.

Could it be the OP is into Linux and can't eat Win without WINE to wash it down?   :eusa_dance:
