Living Room / Re: Where else do you go except DonationCoder
« Last post by housetier on June 13, 2008, 04:32 PM »
I don't participate in any other forums besides donationcoder.com. I do spend a lot of time on my own sites, moderating comments and replying to comments. However, if it has to be a forum there is only dc.

Well you guys from dc.com are way too advanced for the rest of the world, which is why slashdot only recently started a thread about this same topic!

go dc

I have been reluctant in the past to install yet another extension into my browser, but I am now adding flashblock to my list of extensions.

I wonder if I should get rid of the flash plugin altogether...

Developer's Corner / Re: OpenSSL Vulnerability?
« Last post by housetier on May 17, 2008, 08:52 AM »
You can try this tool http://security.debi...ra/dowkd/dowkd.pl.gz to check for weak keys. Updated packages for Debian and Ubuntu also include programs (ssh-vulnkey, openssl-vulnkey) to check for weak keys.

I have found one trusted key on one of the workstations. Luckily it was only from a laptop that no longer exists.

I have found ABP to be a great help in avoiding ads.

A generic format/syntax for color schemes would be SUPERAWESOME!

winscp can connect via sftp, and I think you can tell winscp to use NP++ as editor. Maybe you can even map the remote connection to a drive...

Mibbit works really good, I use it on my sites as well. Also my club has embedded their client; it's so easy.

They are continuously adding features so with time its use might become more flexible but also more complicated. I like it very much.

IIRC, IrfanView can also do batch processing, as can the gimp and Imagemagick's convert. The latter two are FOSS.

I like their little games for example "match up". It's a fun way to expand knowlede.

I wish there was something like this for German as well.

f0dder, so how do you solve the fragmentation issue without swear words? I know I am a goddam liar have a different opinion, but this interests me.

737
I would like to see less mention of potential FOSS vs Windows forum posts. All arguments have been exchanged many times over; it's become too boring to bother.

OK since arguments are discounted: I use Linux because.

If you make a habit of digitally signing your emails, spoofs are easier to detect.

Living Room / Re: mibbit.com - high quality irc chat via the web
« Last post by housetier on April 16, 2008, 10:34 AM »
I heard about mibbit some time ago and was waiting for their widget. As soon as it came out I put it on one of my pages, so people it would be easier for people to contact either one of the project.

I think mibbit is the best web irc client so far. And with bitlbee you can even do all your instant messenging in one browser window!

Now that's legal speak I really enjoyed reading. Mr. Denke has a very good way of presenting facts and arguments. It's got a lot of fire but still seems to civilized!

If an open letter is the right way to respond remains to be seen, but it was worth reading

One page per member per year seems doable judging from my experience with Das Buch: it's been more or less active for many years and still lacks book pages. There is some blog activity but not so much book writing.

Projects like these need a person in charge of it; someone who will keep asking members to turn in their work, someone to proof-read, to encourage, and finally to compile everything and release it. Das Buch doesn't have this person so it sort of just bobs up and down.

But where do you stop starting: Do you need to know the layout of the circuits in the processors; what about hardware bugs (F00F or whatever). Curiosity can be drowned in details, so I would suggest starting with something neither too lowlevel nor too highlevel. Then, if curiosity still prevails, one can explore further down and up.

I agree that a certain knowledge of the underlying hardware is good to have, as is knowledge about highlevel concepts such as OOP or AOP. But starting somewhere in the (golden) middle seems best imo.

I see dict.cc has been mentioned already, as well as Leo...

When I want to look up German words, I use canoo.net.

As far as I know it's the only free German online dictionary; if there are others (duden.de, pons.de do not offer similar services) please TELL ME! :)

It's hard to be considerate of everyone and still get things done. For some these "hints" might be helpful, while others are very much annoyed by them. Maybe if the suggestions weren't only suggesting sqlnote but alternatives also, it would feel more balanced.

I'd be interested in more details too: what was corrupted, how sure are you it was one program and not the other?

This is interesting :)
