Developer's Corner / A very nice text about developing open-sourced software
« Last post by KenR on August 24, 2006, 01:41 PM »
Producing Open Source Software is a book about the human side of open source development. It describes how successful projects operate, the expectations of users and developers, and the culture of free software. It is available in bookstores and from the publisher (O'Reilly Media), or you can browse or download it here.

Living Room / Having trouble finding the right tool to set up your network?
« Last post by KenR on August 24, 2006, 01:02 PM »
Well, I think we found it for you....

Wenger, the manufacturer of the classic Swiss Army Knife, has revealed a 9-inch long, 2-pound "knife" which carries 85 instruments, or: almost every tool that has ever been on a Swiss Army Knife, ever. The list includes seven different knives, a golf shoe spike wrench, a bike chain rivet setter, and a laser pointer with a 300ft range (but where's the freakin' USB flash drive?). Presumably this is so seasoned golfers can tune their bicycle's rivets before heading off on a deer hunt / cycling trip armed with blinding lasers and an entire collection of 3-inch knives.

Living Room / Harry Potter isn't the only one with gross-sounding candy....
« Last post by KenR on August 23, 2006, 08:11 PM »
There are a lot of gross candies in this world. A lot. I didn’t realize the level of grossness that candy has sunk to. We at Candy Addict decided to compile a list of the Top 10 grossest candy we could find. We searched high and low for gross candy and came up with a long list. We then each ranked the grossness of each and compiled our results to bring you the Top 10.

Start Player: A Kinda Collectible Card Game was announced today by Bezier Games (read the press release here). Start Player solves the problem gamers have faced since the advent of boardgaming: who goes first? While a scant few boardgames have built-in methods for determining the start player that is relevant to the game, Start Player quickly and definitively determines the Start Player for any game, even those with variable turn order....

Living Room / Watch Ahree Lee age three years before your eyes
« Last post by KenR on August 22, 2006, 10:07 PM »
The idea is simple, the result is stunning. On November 1, 2001, artist Ahree Lee began taking daily digital snapshots of her own face; and she has continued this project every day since. In 2004, Lee compiled all of her daily images into a montage with a wistful musical score. In the fast-paced parade of images you're about to see, each second of screen time represents about one week's worth of pictures.

Living Room / Compare your weight to celebrities like King Kong and Mr. Ed.
« Last post by KenR on August 21, 2006, 11:27 PM »
In this day and age that we live in, nobody wants to be themselves anymore. There is always some sort of comparison going on, and we tend to imitate our idols than being happy with ourselves. The Celebrity Weighing Scale is a gadget that helps erode your identity further by doing away with numbers found in traditional scales. Instead, you get to compare your weight with celebrities, historical figures, and fictional characters. Amongst the names found inside includes Chuck Norries and Goldie Hawn. One thing's for sure - you wouldn't want to be tipping the scales at King Kong. Pick one up from Angry today for €35.

Living Room / Surveillance equipment has never looked so ..... scary!
« Last post by KenR on August 21, 2006, 03:53 PM »
There is a WIRELESS VIDEO CAMERA hidden inside this screw. Really.

A surveillance camera like this could be hidden in dozens of places, in almost any location, and if well placed, no one would EVER suspect.

Here are the specs:
   Resolution: 330 Lines Resolution
   Lens: 3.6/2.9mm Pinhole
   Pixels: 270,000

Look at the other video cameras at Darkcreek.com, in objects such as clocks, sunglasses, baseball caps, and boom boxes! You will be amazed!

Living Room / Here's a helpful snake...one that puts out fires!
« Last post by KenR on August 21, 2006, 03:28 PM »
Which is a more frightening idea — getting caught in a fire, or being confronted by a ten foot long mechanical snake? If you're stuck in that fire, trust me, you'll be happy to see the snake. The "Snakefighter" is a new tool in firefighting being developed by Sintef that can best be described as a fire hose that works on its own. Brilliantly using the water pressure of a firehose to power itself, the Snakefighter can work its way much closer to dangerous fires than human firefighters can. This is simply a concept at the moment, but the time might not be too far off when you'll be caught in a building burning down after you fell asleep with your laptop on and will be really excited to see a giant snake come to your rescue. No word on if it will come with the ability to rescue your baby or not.

Living Room / Keep losing your Pen? Here's something that might help...
« Last post by KenR on August 21, 2006, 07:58 AM »
Most pen holders in the office are boring looknig objects. Why not inject some life into your desk area with the Dead Fred pen holder? Made from silicone rubber, Dead Fred is more than able to keep your pen upright via the gaping hole on his chest. Too bad he has room for only one pen - this would make a great gift to a new colleague or an icebreaking conversation starter. Dead Fred will be made available soon from Suck UK although pricing details are still yet to be determined.

The Japanese are not only way ahead of us in terms of cellphone technology, they even beat the crap (pardon the pun) out of us when it comes to the porcelain throne. Technology like automatically rising toilet seats, heated seats, and the inclusion of bidets are old hat to them. Toto from Japan has developed a toilet that comes equipped with a built-in MP3 player and an SD memory card slot for storage purposes. It is not integrated into the seat itself, but on the wall beside the commode for easy reach. The buttons there probably has more germs than elevator buttons, but if having some tunes can ease your constipation, why not?

Congratulations Mouser, but a word of warning too. I have Directory Opus for creating toolbars (launchers). If you improve this any more, I may have to install it and use up even more of my ever dwindling memory. Pretty soon I won't have any left.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: XYplorer File Manager
« Last post by KenR on August 16, 2006, 05:59 PM »
Zaine,

I went through your review quickly, but didn't notice anything about programming. From my perspective, the programmability (I'm not sure that's a word) is DO's greatest strength. I commonly update files after exiting a program as well as doing other things before starting a program and/or after exiting one. The raw and common commands are both powerful and useful. There are extremely few things I have not been able to do to customize the interface when need arose, such as placing printer buttons on file listers to readily change the default printer or creating layouts and placing buttons on file listers to instantly change the interface. I do all these things with the script language. Does XYPlorer have these features as well?

Thanks, Ken

Great review Zaine. Thanks very much for doing this AND putting so much effort and thought into it!!! It sounds like a wonderful program.

Like you though, Directory Opus is still "King of the Mountain" in my eyes and I can't imagine anything displacing it.

Perhaps a way to link to dictionary.com (so you can look up a word) while highlighting a word? Would that be possible for the future?

Great idea Josh! I know he had one in previous versions and removed - I think due to space issues. But on line linking would circumvent that issue.
