I think it depends a lot on your use of the computer what will work for you.

If you visit questionable websites, or download/run questionable software on your computer, then you probably should go with a commercial security package.

If you are the type who uses internet explorer and immediately clicks the 'protect my computer' link in any browser window that pops up saying "Your computer is infected with 123345234 threats!!!!", or freely clicks any attachments e-mailed to you, then a commercial package might be a good investment too (although no level of security, except possibly unplugging the network cable, can save you from determined stupidity :-[).

Otherwise, I think one of the free ones (possibly coupled with running an on-demand anti-malware scan (MBAM comes to mind) every now and then), is to a large extent more than sufficient.

[rant]

Also, like superboyac notes, many of the commercial suites have gone from good to unmanageable giant piles of ... I used KAV/KIS since version 5, back then it was lean and powerful. Every version since then has gotten bigger, more bloated and slower. It is now at the point where you see special editions for laptops and notebooks, or recommendations to run older version on those, because the latest versions will bring any system that isn't quadcore with 4 gb+ to its knees >:(.

Also, I was getting sick of the way that buying the upgrade from within the software was more expensive than buying an upgrade box in a computer shop, and even that was often more expensive than buying a box of last years version in the shop and installing that and then simply upgrading to the latest version (*glaring at Symantec*).

[/rant]

I've tried some of the other free ones, but either they constantly nag you about upgrading to the paid version, or they have clunky upgrade procedures. MSE is free with no annoying adds or anything, and it updates automatically alongside your Windows .

Thank you for the clarification on the beta thing . I believe either 'finally' or 'at last' would work.

I assume you are booting from some other drive than the one with the problem. Potentially, it could be the part of the disk where the permissions for those folders are stored that is defective. On the other hand it could be something else like a defective cable too.

If it is an actual harddisk failure, you could try your luck with GetDataBack. The free download will allow you to check if you can read the files with it before you buy.

There are a number of such applications, the reason I suggest this one is that it has saved me in the past.

As someone who has spent way too much time manually updating Firefox and flash player on all kinds of machines, I think Chromes automatic updates are great.

If you only have your own machine at home to take care of, then you can afford to be paranoid, but to people who are not computer experts, having security fixes applied automatically without them even noticing, is a blessing compared to how Firefox works.

And I seriously doubt they are going to push an update that changes the EULA silently. Do you have any evidence of this ever happening?

Now Firefox is adding a similar feature, but as with the rapid release schedule, I am afraid they are going to mess it up because they simply don't realize what other changes it requires.

General Software Discussion / Re: The confusion about the term "lifetime license"
« Last post by Jibz on October 08, 2011, 02:42 AM »
So let me carefully point out the psychology behind it all, which nobody ever seems to mention.  Instead, the debates circle around the definitions of the terms, and they completely avoid the heart of the matter.

The problem is this:
The developers pretend (i.e. play dumb) that what they meant by using the term "lifetime" in whatever context is limited to some sort of restrictions. ...

I think that is a very good observation -- it is more of a psychological trick than anything else.

Using the words "lifetime license" in this way is a lot like when commercial software companies advertise "free download". They use the word "free", not because there is any chance anybody would ever charge $5 for a download, but because they can con a percentage of people into downloading and installing their software, thinking it is free.

It's a royal pain to install and use software if you are not always running as administrator and the only user on a system. Microsoft haven't fixed this in the past 10 years, and now developers are trying to work around it.

I agree that it would be ideal if programs were limited to run from specific sane places, and that installing software into a place that was meant for data is a bad choice, but after you have fought with installers that require admin rights and then only install the shortcuts to the administrators account, software that requires admin rights to enter a license key, and then only shows up as licensed on the admin account, endless changing accounts to update software, software that stores file in the program files folder, etc. etc. etc., quite frankly it was nice that Chrome just worked :(.
