OK, this one has been driving me up the wall for a while now.

I have a WMP control and a listview. Simple enough.

What I am trying to do is allow the user to double-click an item in the listview, and add it to a playlist (begin playing it in the WMP control). I have tried numerous ways to do this, and all of them give an error saying that it cannot cast the type String to WMPlayer (or whatever the name of the WMP control backend is called).

Avoiding sounding like a total idiot, here is the current code that I have (that is still a total FAIL)

Code: vb.net [Select]
  1. Private Sub ListView1_DoubleClick(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles ListView1.DoubleClick
  2.         'Playlist = Player.newPlaylist("myPlayList", "")
  3.         'Player.currentPlaylist = ListView1.SelectedIndices
  4.         'InfoLabel.Visible = False
  5.
  6.         Dim Playlist As IWMPPlaylist = ListView1.SelectedItems.ToString
  7.         'Dim theMedia = libForm.TheMedia
  8.         Playlist = Player.currentPlaylist
  9.
  10.         ' Set the current media. It will play automatically.
  11.         Player.currentMedia = Playlist
  12.
  13.     End Sub

Anyone got a tutorial on this? Ideas? Am I a total oblivious idiot and am missing one line of code??? :tellme: H-E-L-P! ;D

Living Room / Picking the right mouse for gaming - suggestions?
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on June 27, 2008, 05:05 PM »
I am a heavy gamer- if I am not doing a little bit of coding I am either racing, slaying or planning for either of the two. As several of you know I had a G7 Wireless laser mouse that was stolen. While it was a good mouse, it had a few drawbacks:

  • The USB adapter was TINY - so small that I lost the first one, and had to buy another one!
  • While it did make attempts to tell you, the battery would run low fast once it hit "Red" status
  • The surface got scratched quite easily
  • There were reports of a faulty clicking mechanism inside the mouse - after several thousand (50,000-250,000+) clicks, the mouse would either double-click or not click at all (on a single click attempt). While several thousand sounds like a lot, its not when your shooting at people 16 hours a day ;D

I am looking to get either another G7 (I do miss mine quite a bit) or a G9; however the G9 is a wired mouse, and while it hosts a world of extra new gizmos and whatnot, I am a total wireless lover.

The G7 is $80, G9 $100.
Wireless, wired.
2000DPI, 3200DPI.
Battery life, USB powered.
500 refreshes/sec, 1000 refreshes/sec.

But I still love wireless. Can someone give me an idea as to what to do? I would really like the additional things the G9 has, but the G7 just worked exactly the way I wanted.

G9: http://www.logitech....es/3053&cl=us,en
G7: http://www.logitech....ces/163&cl=us,en

Thoughts? Any G7/G9 owners? Opinions?

That's exactly what I ended up doing nite_monkey

Although I ended up adding a password and just telling Vista to remember it because I am lazy :P

Could "delete folder" and "refresh" buttons be added? I am on Vista so I just drag everything to the "main area" out of the folders and then delete the folders, and doing this manually takes forever...

Problem: When a TV tuner is installed in a PC, Webcam Signature treats it as if it is a webcam (other programs do this too, like Windows Live Messenger) - would it be possible to detect and prevent this? It lags the program having it refresh a bunch of gray fuzzy noise and non-existent video every second or two.

(I have a "Happauge WinTV" TV tuner, if that is relevant at all)

The option I wanted most it lacks - an OS X type of fading effect from one image to another. Sad, I would have kept it if it had it (I told the dev about it, it may be in another version!).

Hell March Remix, that is :)

But yes, I have the first and second plus the remix - they all go pretty well with Sauerbraten IMO. Good for overriding some of the songs I don't particularly care for while playing.

The water tower was my idea - it was actually some type of a castle or something, but the person left before it was finished - all I did was add the foundation, the water, the steam, and some barriers to make it look more realistic.

Web GUI management is off - I messed with about 1/2 of the options; I do all the bandwith-intensive stuff so that QoS Gaming Mode option should definitely come in handy :)

Awesome! I was able to get it all up and running without bricking the thing! I am really impressed by the GUI and responsiveness of the options. Now just to make sure that the wireless PCs work...

Yep, perfect! :-*

I bought the pro version of ObjectDock after its latest update, and am happy I did - Stardock makes great software, at a CHEAP price, and it feels good buying it because you know your getting your money's worth while supporting the developers.

I have had no issues with activation, purchasing OD was a breeze, and I am very happy with it. I plan to buy Object Desktop once I get the money.

I looked at the link and couldn't make heads or tails how to download the correct (and latest) firmware version...

Is there a tutorial somewhere I could follow to try this out? :read:

Alright, screenshots are SOOO Windows ME ;D

How about a video? Good, cause that's what I have :P

I took a 3 minute video showing off all the main areas of the DC map. It came out pretty nice, even though I had to do it in chunks to keep the FRAPS encoder from slaughtering my CPU. The map is not yet complete, and I forgot that darn light in p3lb0x's castle again, but I figure it might as well be version 0.1 beta.

Some other changes you might not notice...

  • Removed fake sky
  • Removed all objects outside of the main area (the sandbox objects people made) - they have been saved in a map called "donationcoderbackup" in case.
  • The bottom of p3lb0x's castle now actually touches the bottom of the foundation!
  • Some other small changes to make the map feel more realistic

You might notice the graphical corruption on the video, when I look at the fake sky map "walls" - I am not sure, but this is probably a side effect of my overclocking. But whatever, its no big deal.

Enjoy!

Living Room / Router keeps having mysterious issues - help??
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on June 25, 2008, 06:21 PM »
Alright, this is REALLY starting to get on my nerves, so hopefully someone can shed some light on my issue.

I have a Linksys WRT300N wireless Draft-N router with a 4 port switch. It is about 2 years old, and up until a month ago it ran flawlessly. Amazing little router.

About 25 or so days ago the router started just dropping the internet altogether - no other changes, just no internet. No apparent cause, nor any warning; just gone. Resetting the power fixes the problem, but it reoccurs randomly. Doing a reset via the physical button fixes the problem, but it still comes back. Same with the router software (192.168.1.1) reset option. And last night my XP laptop totally lost the SSID - the other wi-fi computers had it, and my wired PC had internet, but the laptop just kind of fell off the edge into a black hole.

No changes to the router password, no SSID changes, no security changes, just loss of internet. And it is the router, not the modem or the internet itself.

I am somewhat suspicious of the next door neighbors attempting a hack of our internet, as they also have a router (with WEP2 security) - however I seriously doubt that they set it up themselves (Geek Squad, perhaps). I have beefed up the wireless security to WEP2 on our end as well, changed the router admin password and the password for wireless access. I will also go back to my old "difficult" setup of hiding the new SSID once the computers are setup, and also only allowing MAC addresses of our computers.

I still don't really think it is a repeated hacking attempt or DoS attack, but just a glitch in the router itself maybe. I am using the latest firmware (a year or so old, but still the latest)... and I have looked into open source firmware for Linksys routers, and it only works for the G series (and I have a WRT150G or something, our last router, but I need the speed/range of N, not G "with SPEEDBOOSTER").

Ideas? Thoughts? Advice? :tellme:

All my computers (so far) are/have been OEM with Windows preinstalled, but all of them have been formatted and reinstalled several times in their lifetime.

So I guess I'll opt for the "installed myself" option, as I have run through the XP install a good 60 times and Vista about 20 or so

General Software Discussion / Re: Nero - WHY?
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on June 25, 2008, 01:23 AM »
I have had the preinstalled Nero come on several computers, and IMO it just sucks. Not only does it take ages to open, but once it is open, you are thrown into this world of pointless extra crap that you will never use, and all you want to do is burn some data. And assuming you get a usable disk out of it, it might not work in another PC.

ImgBurn is perfect for me - it makes sense, is quick, and the options are there if I want them. It does its job and it does it well (I have never had a bad CD/DVD from ImgBurn). I use CDBurnerXP for other things, as it is user-stupid and I am usually in a hurry when I want something on a disk. :)

Alright, some additional changes...

  • Red base inside now glows red
  • Blue base inside now glows blue (ceiling especially)
  • Pool now has lights around it (on the inside, right above the water) for improved visibility
  • I am testing some barely-noticeable yellow lights on top of the flagpoles, and may try to make the flags appear like they are waving
  • I moved a couple of the bases (flags in capture mode) to make them not float
  • Fixed p3lb0x's castle (the stairs were all wierd)
  • Added light fixture in p3lb0x's castle (there was light, but no source!)
  • The secret area above the map is now inaccessible unless within edit mode, so play fair!
  • There are now dim red lights outlining one of the exits of the Battle Arena (the same side that has the glowing lights for the entrance) - the other side is planned
  • Fixed sunlight (there are now 2 functional suns, one for the Battle Arena and one for the overall portion of the map)
  • Some other random fixes
  • And more to come...

I have 5 screenshots, but with the new lighting 3 of them are outdated already so still no images yet, but I promise you will like the new changes :)

Living Room / Re: What are your favorite gadgets and gizmos?
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on June 24, 2008, 11:45 PM »
Most of my gadgets are built into my computer, but I have a PS2 in good condition and an Xbox I plan to start hacking into soon (maybe get a new "computer" out of it). Ironically the 2 strangest things I have were also the two cheapest I can think of. Cheap doesn't always mean low quality!

#1: Innovage Corded telephone
Price: $12.99 @ Walgreens
Reason: The numbers and math buttons (along with a couple others) on the front panel litterally take NO pressure to activate. You just touch it and it takes the input. Minimal effort, same result. Plus the built in calculator, and funny hold music (it is hilarious, I once left a telemarketer on hold for 15 minutes or so while this annoying jingle played... the hold music will drive anyone insane).

#2: Unknown-brand florescent light
Price: $8.95 @ Lowes
Reason: It is simple, compact, and the part that is really cool is the on/off "switch" is a heat sensing alluminum ball - you just barely touch it and it switches on (or off). It is really bright too, and you can put it almost anywhere.

Couldn't find an image, sorry :(

Also, I have a Waterpik as well - they do a really great job, as long as you know how to use it (and don't go cranking up the pressure like an idiot :P). They really do make a difference, if you can't floss or if you have braces/some other dental adjustment. I have this one:

I may post some screenshots later tonight, I was having fun playing on the map (several people from the 'net came onto my server earlier today before I was able to change the mastermode to lock it down, and I got some positive feedback, so that is always good...) and making changes. We (myself and, I believe Deozaan) had a person come in a couple months back and make a small tower in the corner of the map - it was inaccessible outside of edit mode, so I converted it to a water fountain. It came out pretty nice. :)
745
As scannie pointed out to me...
That is just a WMP control and a listbox
True. (Minus the 2 buttons that are still not working >:(, not seen in that image) But what is the point? It is simple. Thats the idea.

I have tried a tabbed program with all the bells and whistles before. It sunk like a rock. So I am taking the simple, clean route this time - each part is individual, not combined. Don't blame me because it is the only media player that doesn't lag ;) (surprisingly, because it uses WMP - and WMP is slower than PlayMe)

(this post was not pointed at scancode, but it kind of amused me that it is *too* basic :))

So you can "write" and "draw" using a webcam and (mostly) any ordinary object? One of the coolest things I have seen using a webcam. Very interesting.
747
Packet sniffing isn't that difficult either - a simple google search turns up 10+ programs (I have used 2 or 3 myself on my elementary school wireless network to try and get access, (failing in the long run)) and I would imagine someone with adequate skills would be able to hack the wireless "security", but in my experiences that isn't an issue. But if you live in an apartment/other complex, it might be if you have some tech-savvy users nearby...

Bump! w00t! ;D

The new version of Sauerbraten, codenamed "CTF Edition" (because of the new CTF mode - it is said to be different from capture, not sure yet), has been released! I have the new version and, if you have a CPU that is decent and you have a good graphics card, you will enjoy the new graphical changes. The menus have been slightly changed, there is a new configuration editor (game config ini file I believe), a few new game modes, a single player Campaign mode, new maps, etc etc etc.

Because of this new version, I have begun working a bit again on the DC map - improving the sunlight and small lighting is my current task. Little changes will appear here and there. I plan to extend the map out (removing the "fake sky") and "grow" the map as was originally planned. There may also be a new, more major water flow system, with a waterfall (not sure yet, but it sure would be cool). And maybe some bunkers to hide out in and make the new CTF more challenging and fun.

I am currently doing a private game with a friend of mine (not a DC member) teaching him how to build and whatnot, and the SB dedicated server is still offline (I have to update it to the new version), but I want to make this map much better than it already is and let everyone enjoy it. Also, the DonationCoder City (I believe that is the un-official name of it) is looking a bit outdated, so I might make some changes and improvements there.

If you want to come help out on the map before I "officially" finish the lighting and new additions, you can PM me here, IM me, or email me and I can prep a server real quick and we can work on it. Anyone here at DC is welcome to work on the map, however anyone caught destroying the map out of pure maliciousness (I assume that is a word) will not be allowed on any of my DC server(s) anymore, and may be reported to mouser (or a moderator here). Lots of people have worked hard on this map, please play nice. :)

(Moving items to new locations is not destroying, as long as the item is pasted to its new location promptly. Also, if you are new to Sauerbraten and make a mistake, that is fine! "Destroying" means taking whole chunks out of the map and attempting to sync the bad map with everyone, and leaving/attempting to get people to save the defaced map.)

Anyways, enough talk, more /calclight! ;D
-Brandon

(You can get the new Sauer version from http://www.sauerbraten.org)

I used to compress the whole drive for that extra bit of space, but when things go belly up and you lose everything because you told windows to compress the drive and it compresses the system files too, things don't look good at that point. Hence the reason that I don't do it anymore. When Windows starts (literally) killing itself, bad things happen.

All my tracks have anti-cheat layouts within them, so don't try ;)
-wreckedcarzz (June 19, 2008, 03:42 AM)
I wouldn't call it cheating; I'd call it poor track design.
:o :( ;D I'll admit a few tracks may ... suck :P
But only Deozaan can cheat! No one else ;D *points at mouser* :o

Sadly my "better" computer is out of commission again to prevent data loss.
You have a lot of weird problems with that computer...

(By the way, your "use the ramp to fly off the side" on one of those new tracks will now fail, your car will meet a nice little pool of water...)
