Living Room / Re: What is appropriate content for DonationCoder?
« Last post by TucknDar on January 03, 2008, 06:28 PM »
One thing I like about DC is that everyone can be themselves and feel at home

On the surface this sounds great, but if this were true, would we be having this discussion?
You're right. Obviously you're not feeling as much at home as I or the other repliers to this thread are. Too bad, but I hope you'll find a way to yet again enjoy your stay.

Here is another one sort of close to home.  As close as the verbiage under your member name.  I hope you will not be offended.  You asked for a real example.
Ouch! Hehe, no I'm not offended. To clarify though, the line under my member name is just a little nod to Red Dwarf for any fans of British Sci-Fi humour.

Good for you that you've started this thread, by the way. Although we're probably on different worlds in many respects, I think the DC-community has proven to be a place where such things can be discussed without the name-calling and disrespect that other forums and communities are too often ruined by.

Can't say the content nor the language that the YouPorn-thread exemplifies bothers me in the least, TBH. I don't think "bad" language is bad, but this may obviously be because English isn't my first language. I realize many people see it differently in English speaking countries and maybe the US in particular, but it doesn't offend me.

I also haven't seen any graphic content on DC that I find either offensive or to have crossed any "line of appropriateness" on this fine forum. I'd say that posting pictures from the websites that are linked to in the thread you mention would probably cross that line on this particular forum, but I don't think that would ever be a problem on DC.

As mouser says, it's probably a good idea to avoid politics and religion on DC, but I think that any other kind of censorship would take away the "bite" if you know what I mean. One thing I like about DC is that everyone can be themselves and feel at home, and I think that if you tell people that they can't use the language they're used to or have fun talking about the things they like, the forum would be less interesting. I'd certainly feel that way.

In short, I don't see the problem at all...

The environment has degraded  to where I am vexed with ever increasing frequency by the profanity and graphic content that is so accepted in the threads and is so distasteful to me.
Sorry, I don't understand what you mean by this? I read your story (try making paragraphs, it was kinda hard to read ;) ) but I didn't see how the example explained what you think has happened to DC.

Maybe a real example from DC would be more helpful.

Or am I missing something?

hmmm... probably (in (almost) no particular order):
  • Total Commander
  • Opera
  • Website-Watcher
  • Notepad++
  • MS Word

Happy new year, everybody!! May 2008 bring you all the best!

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: New C# FARR Plugin: FARREnviormentVariables

yes, getting the latest version of AltTab works. However, I would've gotten it if DCUppdater had found the update, which it didn't, so maybe you could fix the pad file or whatever DCUppdater looks for.

Thanks though, works like a charm now :)

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: New C# FARR Plugin: FARREnviormentVariables
« Last post by TucknDar on December 30, 2007, 04:10 AM »
The plugin throws some errors on my system:

This one appeared when I first booted today.

Find&Run Robot [FindAndRunRobot.exe] Screenshot - 30.12.2007 , 10_11_55.png

Then, when clicking above, I got this:

Find&Run Robot [FindAndRunRobot.exe] Screenshot - 30.12.2007 , 10_12_10.png

Then:

Find&Run Robot [FindAndRunRobot.exe] Screenshot - 30.12.2007 , 10_12_24.png

Then FARR crashed and I had to restart it.

Now, when I "Click to examine and configure plugins" I get the following error and I can't configure plugins:

Find&Run Robot [FindAndRunRobot.exe] Screenshot - 30.12.2007 , 11_05_05.png

Removing the "EnviormentVariables" plugin folder solves the problem. (Also, shouldn't it be called FARREnvironmentVariables and not FARREnviormentVariables?  ;) )

P.S I was a bit on the roll ;) But that's it, I stop for now.
What? No, you don't need to do that :(

;) Just kidding. It's brilliant to us mere users to have another plugin writer for our favourite launcher. Thanks for your contributions to FARR and DC!

FARR + Point Motivator: Would be nice to have a Point Motivator plugin in FARR. That way I could use FARR to add points. something like "pointm 10 tidied my desk" would add 10 points for tidying my desk...

think this would be much faster than opening Point Motivator and adding points. But I suppose I'll have to wait for this plugin until more people actually use Point Motivator ;)

OneNote doesn't save the time in the actual note, but hovering the notes shows the date of "capture". I suppose if you'd use this much every day, date only isn't good enough

Again, though, this is using Opera as browser and a little workaround for OneNote. Maybe if you use IE or FireFox (with extension) the time and date is also in the note. I wouldn't know.

I recently purchased MS OneNote 2007 for several purposes, "internet information manager" being one of them. It doesn't work flawlessly with Opera (my favoured browser), but I've managed to work around it, so with the push of a button, the text I've copied from a website will be pasted into a new note.

Wow! It's really fast, too. I wouldn't have thought that this kinda plugin (retrieve web stuff) could be that fast.

Excellent work, ecaradec

Ummm... don't know. The one time I needed faxing I just used the fax machine at work.

Happy to be of service.

Just ask again if you need more help!

… and happy holidays, man!

General Software Discussion / Re: Need help with a name for my new NANY program
« Last post by TucknDar on December 21, 2007, 01:57 PM »
I'm waiting patiently for beta... To be honest I think this is an excellent idea, even better the more I think about it. I hope that for me and my productivity this will be more than just a good idea but something that'll actually help my motivation. The points in itself won't do much for motivation, but if I convert points to money and then set aside say $1/10pts I can try to earn points to earn the "right" to buy something I want (if this works for me, I'll obviously donate some of the "earned" money to DC ;) ).

Oh, and to you cynics out there, I know I won't actually earn anything through this program since I doubt that it actually generates money (consider that a feature request!!!), but I think the scenario I presented could work as real motivation.

I've got at feature request (yes, before actually trying it...): A way to deduct points, i.e. punish me: So that if I haven't done this or that chore or read what I was supposed to, I lose x points. Since you obviously haven't released yet, maybe this is already in there, but judging from the screenshot doesn't look like it.

I can recommend the v.2 even though it's "only" beta. I know I'm not alone doing that, by the way ;)

oh, and welcome to DonationCoder.com! Enjoy your stay 8)

how about "Point Motivator"?
Simple and to the point (no pun intended).

I still kinda like my own MotiPoints though :-[

First off, I'd love to test this, mouser! I think it sounds like a great idea, and certainly a great companion to app's InstantBoss

As for name suggestions, here's a few (mostly based on the motivation aspect):
Motivator / Motivatr
MotiPoints
Mousetivator  :o
Motiward
PresentPoint / PresentPoints (much like working title but a bit more catchy maybe?)
RewardME

And a follow-up to app's suggestion:
Points2Presents

OK, so I might not be better at coming up with names than mouser, but I sorta like MotiPoints and PresentPoints TBH :-[

KeePass 1 for me. Has been for quite a while, and I don't see any reason to switch. It's portable too, which is nice.

Thanks for reminding me. I loved StrokeIT, but the middle button on my previous mouse broke so I stopped using it (using the right button wasn't ideal for me).

Will install again :)

If you're having trouble keeping up with all of the activity, who can blame you? No seriously, that's a real question -- make a list of who can blame you and try to get them fired before they rat you out for wasting time at work.

Great newsletter, Darwin. Btw, I like the "more sections this time, with fewer links in each"!
