I wouldn't mind my mediaplayer to look like that; I think it is really good looking

But with such an outlay I see even less reason not to have foobar a full media player, and not just an audio player. I'm not too interested in any audioplayer at all, because my playlist is crowded with music videos as well. I mean: foobar is still an audio player only, or what?

If the above method doesn't suit you, take a look at http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html which is getting immensely popular

http://www.erightsoft.com/S6Kg1.html > scroll all down, is a better link, or you may never actually find the download. SUPER © may be The Best, but the web-designer is not, and the servers are the worst (33 KB/S).

100 pages in that thread? Good god.

Nice one Curt, I appreciate that. Actually I took out a full  Donationcoder license  back in the early days and I lurk around the forums from time to time.  Most informative.

I notice you just signed up to the Premium edition. Thanks for that. As a little gesture of appreciation I've extended your premium subscription from 1 to 2 years.

General Software Discussion / To manage the startup procedure
« Last post by Curt on March 24, 2007, 08:02 PM »
For some years I was been using JoeJoe's StartRight to manage my old Win 2000's startup procedure. I loved this app, and I think it has no competition when it comes to making it EASY to manage startup. StartRight is not fancy, and can do very little to speed up starting, but when it comes to the managing part of the procedure, there really is no other.

Think of it: Would you like i.e. your mail client to be the very last program to open at startup? Click the mail client once, click the lower down-button ("All Down") in the left margen once, click Close, and your mail client is now the last program to open! Ohh, this is soooo easy!!!  :-*

sr-snapshot.gif

Do you want another program to be the second-last to start? Click All Down + One Up - how hard can it be? This program really has my warmest recommendations!

Now, if this program is so fantastic, how is it then that I don't use StartRight?  :o
Well, for some unknown reason StartRight will not work properly on my new XP, as it did on my old Win2K. There should be no reason for this, StartRight is working well on many many other XPs (not Vista compatible). But anyway, I had to give it up and start looking for another startup manager. I have tried some, but not yet found the right one - (Chameleon Startup included; its not half as easy to use).

On other threads we have talked about many startup managers, but the angle was different. I am not asking if you know if any app will make the startup faster or slower, or if they will disable dangerous items, or do other fancy stuff, but: if you know of any startup manager that will make it very easy to MANAGE THE ORDER and the delay of the programs in the startup procedure?

Daemon tools Right Click shell ext - Same link as above

Welcome to DC, EarthCoder!  :-*

Right now I tried to install ArniWORX awxEditHook_035b124, but a pop-up said that the installation could not be fulfilled because MFC70.DLL wasn't found. Now, where should MFC70.DLL come from - if you know, please?
I did install awxTarget without any problems.

I've rediscovered NirSoft (Nir Sofer Software),
and their RegScanner and so many other small, but fine and free programs.

Description:

RegScanner is a small utility that allows you to scan the Registry, find the desired Registry values that match to the specified search criteria, and display them in one list. After finding the Registry values, you can easily jump to the right value in RegEdit, simply by double-clicking the desired Registry item. You can also export the found Registry values into a .reg file that can be used in RegEdit.

Advantages over RegEdit find of Windows:

RegScanner utility display the entire search result at once, so you don't have to press F3 in order to find the next value.

In addition to the standard string search (Like in RegEdit), RegScanner can also find Registry values by data length, value type (REG_SZ, REG_DWORD, and so on), and by modified date of the key.

RegScanner can find a unicode string located inside a binary value.

RegScanner allows you to make a case sensitive search.

While scanning the Registry, RegScanner display the current scanned Registry key, as opposed to RegEdit, that simply display a boring "Searching the registry" dialog-box.

Using RegScanner:
RegScanner is a standalone executable, and it doesn't require any installation process or additional DLLs. In order to start using it, just run the executbale file - regscanner.exe
After running RegScanner, you should select the desired scan/search options.
There are 2 main scan modes:

Load all keys and values starting from the base key:
If you select this option, all values under the specified key and its subkeys will be loaded. For example, You can view all Internet Explorer settings of the current user, by loading all values under HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer.

Load only values match to the following find criteria:
If you select this option, only values that match to the specified find string will be loaded.

- In addition to the above options, you can also filter the scanned Registry values by key modified date, by value data length, or by value type.

Searching DWORD/Binary values:
Starting from version 1.40, you can search DWORD/Binary values. In order to specify a DWORD value to search, you can type (In the Find string text-box) a decimal value (for example: 255) or an hexadecimal value (for example: 0xff).
In order to specify a binary value that you want to search, type (In the Find string text-box) a sequence of hexadecimal bytes, with or without spaces between them.
For example:
013fc7a127cc4a
01 3f c7 a1 27 cc 4a

Searching the Registry in a remote computer:
Starting from version 1.40, you can search the Registry in a remote computer on your network. In order to do that, you should login to the remote computer with admin user. Also, be aware that searching the Registry in a remote computer might be quite slow.

Notice about transition effects:
If you want that RegEdit will be opened as fast as possible with the right Registry value, you should disable the 'transition effects' on your system. (On Windows 2000, go to the 'Display Properties' window, select the 'Effects' tab, and uncheck the 'Use transition effects...' option.

Versions History
New to version 1.40 (21/09/2006):

New search option: Registry item contains the specified DWORD value.
New search option: Registry item contains the specfied binary value
New option: Scan a remote computer.
New option: Copy the selected key to the clipbard (Ctrl+K).
As opposed to previous versions that only scanned the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and HKEY_CURRENT_USER keys, now you can also choose to search under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, HKEY_USERS, and HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG.
regscanner.gif
Its not advanced, but might be sufficient for most.

just to clarify, i didn't mean that babylon wasn't a super powerful program, only that if you are looking for the most powerful and feature packed pure thesaurus, designed for exploring synonyms, mobysaurus is the one

Understood. (only, I would not look for a thesaurus only).

It's just that when you are in love, no-one can tell or imply anything 'bad' about your loved one...  :-[

I've tried mobysaurus several times, and I still like Babylon better.  :-*
As a foreigner to the American version of the English language, it is very often imperative to me to have the full explanation. Mobysaurus is quite good, but I would never want to be without the Webster's set. And even then, I will often want to also have a translation.

Babylon with Moby Thesaurus only is just as fast as mobysaurus - and just as informative - but then of course there is no need to have a program you must pay for, when you can have mobysaurus for free. But when you need both a dictionary and a thesaurus and a translator, there really is none as fast as Babylon.

However, I think WordWeb Pro 5 is quite good, too.

looks like a really nice all around tool - i'm going to give it a look.
(though im positive it wont have nearly the power that mobysaurus has for use as a pure thesaurus -- no program i've seen is better at exploring synonyms than mobysaurus).

Babylon has a lot more than nearly the power requested, but it is not a thesaurus only, so I am not sure if such a comparison would be fair. Babylon is a dictionary and a thesaurus and a translator. My Babylon is 470 MB and will wait for a second before loading. A beginner's version may be some 20 - 100 MB and will show up at once.

How did it mess up XP?

When I tried to delete a setup file in Programs, TaskSwith kept asking if I really wanted it to close. This was right after installation of both, before any first restart.

Curt, is it so bad not having a localized version of your internet browser?

maybe some nine out of ten programs on my PC are in English only, but one of the reasons I stick to Microsoft is that they will deliver most of their program in localized language versions - and I like that. Having said that, I must admit that when I have come to understand how to use an app, any app, I tend to find it of no matter what language it is using, because I will not be reading the menu text anymore - but will be looking for the icon instead.

And for this reason I might give Maxthon or Avant a chance... Thanks for the tips!

Because this is only a one day offer and won't be free after today, I am still going to try to do this coding snack.

I should mention that I have moved to IE 7 inspite what I said at the time I started this thread. IE 7 is missing the same feature though. I have indstalled IERescuer only today - I don't know why I didn't get a message back then about April's last post - but I do find the price to be so high that it seems a little silly: $20. To add even more silliness the company claims the normal price to be $40 !! - [after-edit:] and it cannot handle IE 7's tabbed browsing! This is no good.
