Thanks - I wonder why it doesn't show up in the "All Deals" or "Free Deals" pages?

I noticed that too... and I'll ditto the thanks.  Have wanted something like this for a while, but it was a little pricey...

Given your usual approach to all things Windows I am somewhat surprised that you even had stock in Microsoft.

I think the title was quoting the article... I don't think Zaine actually had stock in MSFT...

Living Room / 'Dark Knight Rises' shooting: Three heroes died in Aurora
« Last post by wraith808 on July 23, 2012, 11:04 AM »
One hopes that if unfortunate to be caught in a situation like that in Aurora, one would have the courage to lay down their life for loved ones.  But life is a hard thing to put on the line for anyone, which in my estimation makes these young men heroes.

Three survivors of the Colorado movie-theater massacre escaped with minor wounds, but were left with broken hearts because their heroic boyfriends died saving them.

In final acts of valor, Jon Blunk, Matt McQuinn and Alex Teves used their bodies to shield their girlfriends as accused madman James Holmes turned the Aurora cineplex into a shooting gallery.

Blunk’s girlfriend, Jansen Young; McQuinn’s girlfriend, Samantha Yowler; and Teves’ gal pal Amanda Lindgren made it out of the bloodbath — but they would have been killed had it not been for the loves of their lives.

Either he's just writing to get views- or is quite stupid.  If you already believe it's undervalued, then something like this wouldn't make you sell.  Not that I disagree about Windows 8- I believe that Metro should be the default shell on touch devices and leave the desktop shell at its normal default.  But to sell based on this when it's not likely that MSFT is going to tank that badly, and very likely that they will recover.

Site/Forum Features / Re: About the Basement (Soap Box) Section

Hmm. I'm mostly okay with avoiding religion, but "politics" is becoming harder to avoid, because it's starting to cross over into requiring the educational services of techies (which is what you are) or techie-wannabes (me!) to form the coalitions necessary to stop the rabid new Big Brother pushes. Some of the best posts I've yet seen on these topics are here, starting to edge out Slashdot, my prior go-to zone.

Just because politics invade our every day lives, it doesn't mean we have to be focused on it all the time.  As mouser said, the tendency has been to keep the focus off of that.  I think that invasion is the reason that 'The Basement' even has to exist- it's becoming harder to keep it out of all of your discussion.  But I also think that it's not an impossible nor unreasonable goal- it's not what many/most come here for, and there are a wide variety of people that without discussion on such topics can be very civil and agreeable- but when you throw that in, the differences become more pronounced.
7183
Indeed.  I think I'll be looking at this.  One question I had - are all of the features of a RightNote 'note' supported in Evernote 'notes' (and vice versa)?

How can you disagree with someone personally preferring something for their own use:P ;D

By using words.

By using words that make no difference in preference?

Developer's Corner / Re: Light Table - a new way to view IDEs
« Last post by wraith808 on July 19, 2012, 08:12 AM »
1. We use scratch projects, often having no more than main() to try out stuff. Or we just checkout to a different working folder. And the degree of modularisation in our system is very high, so we can work on just a specific part of it.

I do that too.  But what if you didn't *have* to?  What if you could write the code in place and test it in place?  I've used scratch projects (and my drive is littered with them) and there's a whole overhead involved in even writing the simplest ones- especially when you consider references.  I was using Snippet Compiler (but it's not supported anymore) but references were a pain, especially as a lot of things that I want to test require a lot of references to get off the ground.  I've been using LINQPad as of late... but again with the references.

My references are already in my project- if I could just code a bit there and evaluate it (especially if I'm planning to use it if it works) it would save *so* much time!

3. VS has Find All References (Shift + F12) which works very well. Its more the presentation of the information that is lacking.

But what if you didn't have to find all references?  I don't even have to use shift+f12 - I have an add-in that allows me to mouse over the method name, and find them from the overlay that appears.  But that's still something that I have to do- I'd rather it be there when I need it - like it happens in Light Table.

4. Totally agree. That's what I meant with 'some of it already done'. Again, it's the presentation of the information and the way to get to it that doesn't work.

The devil's in the details- and sometimes that 80/20 rule leaves a lot on the table, i.e. deliver 80% of what you need... but the 20% that's the details and implementation could really make our lives a lot easier.

I'm not against innovation, quite the contrary actually. Nevertheless, I think VS still has potential for huge improvements with real productivity gains, without having to throw everything over board. But with release cycles every two years I just think the improvements don't come fast enough.

Truthfully, with VS, I'd be happy if they'd just fix the damn thing.  It crashes less with each iteration, but it still crashes way too much just doing the simplest thing.  When you need a checkmark to restart the application on exceptions- that might let you know that you're planning on it crashing too much.

Hey! Be nice to the newcomers.  :eusa_naughty:

Truthfully, this is the primary reason that my Linux exploration ended so early when I did it.  Whenever I tried to go beyond the obvious, if I ran into problems, it was hard to get help.  People would say how great Linux is and recommend that you try it, but when you do and ask a question, you would get derided for your lack of knowledge or ignored.  I know that all Linux users aren't like that... but I ran into enough of them during that time that I just shrugged and reformatted the partition as I didn't see that big of an advantage from the depth I was able to get into it unaided.

The things I really like about Light Table are actually in VS (or add-ons) in a different format that is not as helpful to productivity.  But you don't really notice that there's a better way to do things until you think outside the box.

A couple of examples:

1. Ever wanted to do some scratch work on a method or just a snippet of code without affecting your main project?  Engineers do this by having scratch workspace... why don't we?  Snippet compilers or such inline - able to be moved about the workspace.

2. The instant compile is a big turnoff in general... but what if you could turn it on for certain methods... takes the snippet compiler to a different level.  I'm working on this method, and I want to give it inputs and see if the logic works... walk through it without compiling and running the entire solution.

3. I'm in a method- where are the other references?  What else does it reference?

4. What about help for the different parts of said method?  Why do I have to mouse over the bits of code to get the help for the method called?  Why can't it be to the side, especially with landscape monitors?

Break the paradigm of windows- especially docked windows.  They break up the flow, especially if you have to interact with them.

well said, though i don't think people who have't used the ipad for some time will be able to appreciate how awful this restriction is.  it is a very artificial and painful limitation that you eventually come to really resent, and it's a major drawback of the apple devices.

Truthfully, I know the restriction, and it's only really limited me few enough times that it's not been a big deal.  And I rarely use iTunes; now that they added the ability to upgrade the OS without tethering, I haven't connected either of my devices to my computer in quite a while.

Living Room / Re: The Zombie Apocalypse starts now....in Miami

More Zombie sightings...

“I want to kill someone and eat them!” the woman yelled out as she lunged toward a New York City police officer, attempting to bite his face. She was subdued and taken to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

Later, officers were called to the home of Aubrey Vails, the young man who’d ripped a door from its hinges at his parent’s home, after threatening to kill them. Police found the crazed man in the driveway, violently and repeatedly punching a car.

In Georgia, a frightened mother called the police to report that her son, Matthew Hammond, was “acting crazy,” and was walking around with a knife threatening to hurt someone. When the responding officer arrived, Hammond charged the police car and began aggressively knocking on the doors and windows, challenging the officer to a fight. He still had the knife in his hand, and, in an even more bizarre twist to the case, Hammond had feces in his mouth.

Hammond continued to challenge the officer by pulling on the door handles of the police cruiser. The officer accepted Hammond’s challenge by drawing his service weapon, aiming it at the threat. Hammond dropped the knife and was immediately arrested by the officer.

But it doesn’t end there…

Miami – A man growled at approaching police, and then screamed. I want to eat you!”

Roanoke Va. – A man stripped naked and crawled across his back yard to escape from dozens of snakes he perceived were after him. In another Roanoke case, a man bit and chewed at his mother’s arms.

Munnsville – State police responded to a scene where a woman was violently punching and choking a child. Her husband managed to get the child away, so the woman then grabbed the family dog and began abusing it in a similar manner.  The woman starting spinning around in circles, stripped off her clothes, and then chased after a neighbor. As the police officers approached she began growling like a vicious animal. Pepper spray had no effect on the woman, so the troopers deployed a Taser. She died soon after. Witnesses agree that the officers had exhausted all means of restraint before utilizing the Taser.

Calgary – Witnesses observed a naked man bashing his face into a fence, attempting to take off his own nose. When the police arrived they found him sitting (still naked) staring at the ground and bleeding profusely. He became extremely combative, with what could only be described as having superhuman strength.

I wish i could do something about google and yahoo sending the newsletter to spam, but as you might expect, big companies like that don't care about us or what we want.  It's their world and they make the rules.
Tis why I only use my POP3 service on my ISP.  Most all are completely configurable in how they treat your email, right down to a whitelist.....

You can whitelist things on most webmail providers also.  It's just knowing that you need to whitelist...

...and I know from experience that ISPs can ban addresses too and you never know that it was banned.

It's time for FOSS to come to consoles...

OUYA: A New Kind of Video Game Console

Goal$950,000 ($4,176,987 as of this posting)
End Date2012-08-09
Project Creator(s)OUYA - who is  Julie Uhrman has been in games for a long time, at Vivendi Universal, IGN, GameFly, and other places. Yves Behar is the award-winning designer of Jambox, One Laptop per Child, and many others. There are plenty of other people involved, but some of them would get fired if we tell you who they are.
ExcerptIt's time to upend console gaming.

Let’s open this sucker up! It's time we brought back innovation, experimentation, and creativity to the big screen. Let’s make the games less expensive to make, and less expensive to buy. With all our technological advancements, shouldn't costs be going down? Gaming could be cheaper!

We're handing the reins over to the developer with only one condition: at least some gameplay has to be free. We borrowed the free-to-play model from games like League of Legends, Team Fortress 2, Triple Town, and many others. Developers can offer a free demo with a full-game upgrade, in-game items or powers, or ask you to subscribe.

OUYA: The revolution will be televised

OUYA is a new game console for the TV, powered by Android.

We've packed this little box full of power. Developers will have access to OUYA's open design so they can produce their games for the living room, taking advantage of everything the TV has to offer.

Best of all, OUYA's world-class controller, console, and interface come in one beautiful, inexpensive package. All the games on it will be free, at least to try.

Not sure if I'm onboard... but leaning towards it.  I usually don't do initiatives that are this large, or this far away.  And there's the whole Android thing that I've thus far avoided (going to the dark side).  But it is tempting...
