Thanks Carol

You're welcome  :D

I am a little ways yet from being setup yet. I see that i will have research as i go. Any other tips on setting up a computer for video editing

I am not the best person to advise because I don't follow my own advice ... but ...

Generally for audio and Video editing the perceived wisdom is to have a separate installation altogether (preferably a dedicated computer).

If that isn't possible, then a separate Windows installation is a good way to have clean system to work on. By that I mean have a dual boot system.

With Windows 2000/XP this is dead easy as multipboot support is there 'out of the box'. Just create a second partition using a suitable partitioning tool (such as partition Magic) alongside your existing windows installtion, and run Windows installation. when given the oppotunity during the install elect to choose the location of the installation and point at your new partition. Go through the whol process and next time you start up you will have a menu of which version of windows to boot up into.

Second part of this is to remove as much crud from standard windows as you can get away with (look for windows optimization tips on the web - particularly which services and processes can be safely disabled) and use the fastest drivers you can find, esp. for graphics and audio.

This negates you first post as you now have a dedicated platform for audio and video production but it will work a lot more efficiently.

For Video/Audio work it is also worth tweaking your system further ... move your page file to a separate hard disc, and if your applications need a scratch working folder if at all possible put that on a third hard disc. It is good if you can have a dedicated scratch disc that can be regularly formated. Ensure that compression and indexing are switched off on all drives too.

If all this is too much you can compromise by installing on your normal working Windows installation but things will run slower and you may suffer glitches - especially when previewing edits. Best thing here is to try and keep your scratch work area off the windows partition on a separate disc (preferably dedicated). If you can't afford dedicated disc then ensure you get a good defragmenter (such as Perfect Disc) and defragment your discs regularly, esp. before you start doing Audio/Vidoe work. Also be conscientious about clearing rubbish off your hard disc - it is amazing how quickly even large hard discs fill up with crap when you are dealing with large AV files).

I see that you have had fun in my expansive country. I live on Vancouver Island on the west coast.....Garnet.

Yes, my parents live in Ontaro and I have had a few good trips including some excellent canoe trips. Ontario is canoe heaven as far as I am concerned. I am no longer bothered about doing too much white water, but I really enjoy being able to get out in the wilderness for a few days with just a paddle and a tent for company ... (not to mention the bears!)

I'd really love to get over to BC and the Rockies, and one of these years I want to get to the ski areas (particularly Fernie).

However, the place I would really like to visit is the Mount Elias Range, up near the Alaskan border - but I have to accept I am probably getting too long in the teeth to be able to cope in such a wild and inhospitable environment these days. The thought of waiting days on end for good enough weather for a light aircraft to get in, and then waiting even longer to get out is probably more for the young! I can still dream though ...

(ahhhh spelling!)

Hint ... look to the right of the Post button  :Thmbsup:

Some good ideas, but my fear is that it is going to get away from it's original purpose (Clipboard Help, not so bothered about the spell personally).

One thing that is really needed is support for lots of formats being imported from the clipboard: HTML, RTF, possibly MS Word and Excel) and especially graphics formats so that it ceases to be a pure text utility.

What you can do with the clips is important too. We discussed a few ideas ages ago in other threads but:

    Organise output (perhaps like document profiling) - ordering clips, grouping them together and outputting a single document in a choice of formats.

    Shell clipboard history menus (^V gives you a menu of recent clips to chose from for pasting, the number of clips displayed user defined in options), ideally, if at all possible, this should be context sensitive so you are only offered appropriate clips in the context (text only in Notepad etc). If it can't be automatic, then how about making it user configurable for user defined applications?

Nope - process guard (version 1.1 is the one I had downloaded) seems to work fine.

I have no objections to external tools.

I have tried closing all open programs, stopped all unnecessary process and services and it still causes the problem.

One thought - same trick needs to be aimed at Columnist and Program writers pages on the site as they have links to PayPal (and presumably others) coded into their pages ...

Don't know why but it doesn't work for me ...

I can load TaskManager manually no problem.

When CloseMany tries to open the Task Manager for its own purposes the TaskManager complains and exits ...

If I hit refresh list, same thing

You will probably need to set the rendering to the lowest setting possible while you want to use the computer for anything else and then bump up its priority when you can leave it unattended.

Depending on how the software is written you may find setting the rendering software higher than normal makes your system almost completely unresponsive to keyboard or mouse.

I have a variety of video rendering programs and they all behave differently. Some allow you to set priority within the application (eg. TSUNAMI DVD Authoring software allows you to specify a priority if the application window has focus and if it is in the background - you can therefore automatically switch from, say, Idle to High Priority with a single mouse click on or off the window - though if it is in High Priority it can take a couple of minutes to respond to the click! As a result I have TSUMAMI ignored in ProcessTamer as it handles itself well). Other applications assume they are working on their own and hog all processor time it can get and you will find that for hours on end the system won't respond to anything (except the reset button).

In process tamer I would suggest you use Force Low on the program. Then when you want it to resume normal operation (ie. you don't want to use the computer) right click on the PT icon and disable it - that will restore the Normal level. If you want to use the computer re-enable PT and the app will be foreced low again.

Regarding stuff to buy: let me quote from the great Fight Club movie:
The things you own end up owning you.  It's only after you lose everything that you're free to do anything.

Sad as this may seem, that actually makes sense to me ...

Now for the bonfire ...

I have to confess I got very confused on their website?

At one point I was found a comparison chart between different versions of the Office apps with varying functions depending on price. When I tried to find it again I couldn't ???

The only place I can find any reference to 'free for home use' is when you click on 'Download a Trial Version'. Under pricing its says from $39.95, but nothing about free to home users. There is 'special pricing' for educational and non-profit users.

My problem is that I purchased OfficeXP (and Office 2000 before that) which I use daily and it obviously does everything that I need (and a lot more). It seems a bit daft to download a free office suite (actually this is really just WP and Spreadsheet) when MS Office is already installed - even if it does load quicker  :tellme:

Actually I have the latest version of StarOffice 8 installed (they gave me a free copy so it felt churlish not to accept!), and it is very nice. But again when I swap documents with people it is always Office format, so it makes sense to use MS Office (even though Star Office prodcues compatible files). AS a result Start Office uses up some disc space and rarely gets used!

Oh well I'll stop rambling now ...
7190
Great - seems to be working now ...

Don't know what you have done, but my PayPal link no longer works.

It seems that where ever there is an '&' in the URL, specified in my profile, it has been replaced by '&'

Plays PAL perfectly afterwards.

Only if your TV supports PAL

In Europe most TVs are dual format using PAL primarily, but supporting NTSC too.

Most US/Canada TVs only support NTSC. I presume the manufacturers assume that North America has the cheapest and best choice of DVDs and Videos so you don't need to buy European stuff ...

I know that's why I buy a lot of DVDs from the US !!

Do you actually need the word STEP at all in these images, just numbers would do the job effectively and be a cleaner look.

The encrypted PayPal link code is standard HTML format, you could handle the actual HTML tags (to avoid security issues) and just allow people to enter the encrypted part of the code, which is just an encryption of the email address etc.

Here is mine:

<form action="https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr" method="post">
<input type="hidden" name="cmd" value="_s-xclick">
<input type="image" src="https://www.paypal.com/en_US/i/btn/x-click-butcc-donate.gif" border="0" name="submit" alt="Make payments with PayPal - it's fast, free and secure!">
<input type="hidden" name="encrypted" value="-----BEGIN PKCS7----- Lots of encryption junk -----END PKCS7-----
">
</form>

As far as I can tell the "Lots of encrypted junk" is just that, not executable code. It is decoded on the PayPal page referred to using the PKCS7 routines embedded in the PayPal page.

the first three lines are standard (you could supply them so that you know they are OK along with the <form> tags). The only user customisable bit is the image file used for the button. You could choose that as a site default (or even use a DC specific image for the button).

The only user specific info required is the 'Lots of encrypted junk' which could be cut and paste into a user profile field, and automatically used to generate the button script (a trivial PHP script could do that).

If invalid data is supplied PayPal would not be able to decrypt it and generate its own error (and anyway it would not be ina DC page - so no threat to DC). If some one used somebody elses code they would effectively send all their donations to them, but the same thing could happen now if someone copied another users URL from the 'donate' button on the forum pages!!!

Just a thought.
7196
How about allowing user to put a PayPal encrypted button script on their profile page (like you have added the ad control stuff) and then point the icon to the profile for people who have set it up?

Finished Programs / Re: IDEA: Program Closer/Starter
« Last post by Carol Haynes on October 22, 2005, 04:44 AM »
That would be a really neat idea.

Actually something related I would like is a program starter which could start a group of programs in sequence. I would find this particularly helpful at startup as I have all sorts of stuff that starts up with Windows because I can't face starting it all up manually, but it does slow down system start and there is a distinct bottleneck of applications fighting to start at the same time.

What would be nice is the ability to set up program groups, but in sequences and allowing delays before attempting to start a particular app, or even with a default 'sequence delay' say 1 or 2 seconds before attampting to load the next in sequence.

The nice thing about program groups is that you could have effectively multiple startup configuartions which you can choose from a common interface.

Here is a workaround for anyone else having problems with this script ...

Basically it uses the cliboard to paste the code into the text. If it doesn't work, then simply press control V to paste the clipboard contents:

:^+!q*:.img::
InputBox, SearchWords, Forum - enter image, Enter the image URL:
SetKeyDelay 0
ClipBoard =
Send ^V
return

:^+!q*:.url::
InputBox, FullURL, Forum - enter full URL to link to, Enter the full URL (inc. http://, ftp:// etc):
InputBox, URLlabel, Forum - enter text display label, Enter text label to display on page:
SetKeyDelay 0
ClipBoard = %URLlabel%
Send ^V
return
7199
I have tried modifying it so there isn't an obvious clash, but it still doesn't work in Maxthon ???

:^+!o*:.img::
InputBox, SearchWords, Forum - enter image, Enter the image URL:
SetKeyDelay 0
SendRaw
return

:^+!o*:.url::
InputBox, FullURL, Forum - enter full URL to link to, Enter the full URL (inc. http://,

ftp:// etc):
InputBox, URLlabel, Forum - enter text display label, Enter text label to display on page:
SetKeyDelay 0
SendRaw %URLlabel%
return

The hotkeys work, in that the boxes pop up ok but when it tries to past it doesn't produce any text ???

7200
Huh?   Works perfectly here... are you maybe using some other scripts that conflict?

Must be a Maxthon compat issue as it works in FireFox
