One of the things that I wonder is, how is DRM different from traditional software licensing? They're so similar... A lock via DRM vs a lock via a license/key/whatever. I can see some differences, but in other ways, they are so similar...

An update to UK law is on the way, and I'd be surprised if the plan to legalise "format shifting" does not apply to ebooks as well as music and films. I think stripping DRM from legally purchased products will become as common as copying CDs. And the DRM debate will gently fade away...

Interesting article but the phrase 'believe it when I see it' springs to mind. The movie industry in particular had enough clout in the UK to make it illegal to even possess the means to break DRM on DVDs - you don't have to do it just have the means to, and it doesn't matter if you own a title and just want to make a backup (even if it still includes the DRM) that is now illegal.

A new framework will be proposed to parliament but I'll bet you anything it won't get passed if allowing the breaking of DRM is going to be included. The way the movie industry will get around that is to say you can buy another digital copy - and they are already selling combo DVD/BR/digital packs of new movies precisely to head of any changes in the law in the EU and US.
-Carol Haynes (July 07, 2011, 03:23 AM)

That law strikes me as just bizarre. (I think it's a result of DeCSS.)

If I buy a shirt, why would it be illegal for me to take out the stitching? Or if I buy a Roots shirt and a Polo shirt, to swap the labels? Or remove the labels?

CDs don't come with an EULA, and you don't sign anything, so why should you be bound?

Ok. Devil's advocate time over. :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Google+

I'm hopeful that when Games and other crap come to G+, Google will have nice ways of saying "I don't want any app invites from my friends. Ever. No, seriously. None."...

+1 Amen!

I'd also like to see restrictions on email use, as in, yeah... I blocked your app... now please stop spamming me. No. Really. I mean it. Stop. No. I don't want to sign up again. Really. Leave me alone.

Getting email notifications while you're using the application is fine, but if you try to "get out"? There needs to be good faith on the part of developers there. Facebook isn't enforcing that.

(FYI -- Once a developer has access to your Facebook basic information, and email address, they've got it. They can use it whenever they want, even if you opt out or block their application.)

However, I don't think we can expect much in the way of improvements there... Just kind of hoping against hope...

Living Room / Re: More ammunition why patents are EVIL
« Last post by Renegade on July 06, 2011, 03:02 PM »
#4: Patent term reform. [...]I think anything more than 2 or 3 years of market *exclusivity* is unnecessary. If you figure the development of very complex technology may take 3 or 4 years to bring to market, and then add on 2-3 years for sales exclusivity, then perhaps 6-8 years makes more sense. I'd be OK seeing 10.
Big Pharma would be very unhappy with that.  They would contend that the cost of developing and fully testing a new drug is so enormous that they absolutely must have a long term to recover their investment.

Then again Big Pharma are notoriously evil. Their own records demonstrate that they are disgusting liers.

e.g.

http://www.techdirt....-big-pharma-rd.shtml

A few months ago, the pharmaceutical industry was throwing around careless numbers to justify the exorbitant price of its products. The "industry standard" of $800 million to develop a new drug had inflated to $1.3 billion (presumably thanks to non-existent inflation), but some digging around in the very same dataset produced a completely different number: $35 million. Sure, that's not exactly "walking around" money, but it's a lot easier to recoup your investment if you don't overstate it by $1.26 billion.

That's a lie of overstating costs by about 37x.

There needs to be some good-faith, and Big Pharma doesn't have any of it. If you read on the topic, it only gets worse... Much worse... The above is merely the tip of the iceberg.

How can anyone have faith in a system that is so blatantly abused? It is little different than Animal Farmw.

When it comes to medicine, one has to wonder just how genuine the "we want to help people" thing is. I simply can't stomach it. e.g. http://burzynskimovie.com/ - A very scary thing there... One has to wonder what kind of motivations are behind the FDA's attempts to stamp out a single doctor. Big Pharma with patent concerns? It's hard to see much in the way of other motivations.

But that's an extension from patents to the market, and how things can go horribly wrong in the process there.

I'm less concerned about DRM that doesn't let me print or lend or copy my books (although that sucks too), but I find the fact the when I buy a book for my kindle, I'll never be able (without hacks) to read it on a different e-reader (should I decide to buy one) rather annoying.

You can read it on other devices, as long as that device supports the Kindle Software.  Still limiting, but not as much as that statement makes it seem...

Interesting.

I suppose they have an SDK then? That really makes DRM a bit more palatable. If there are reasonable resources to build around it, then at least there is the possibility of consuming it another way possible.

The current iTunes model, where it's iTunes, iTunes or iTunes turns me off. I simply can't stand using it. I want to bash my face in with a sledge hammer every time I think of the pain iTunes causes me. If they had an SDK to do things like access the iTunes store, then a sane interface could be displayed. (Try browsing the iTunes store for a sci-fi TV show -- it's a complete mess and you can't find anything. It's so utterly disorganized... iTunes pukes out a trillion results and expects you to find the needle in the haystack... Might work for fanboys, but I have other things to do than waste time...) I've given up buying anything through iTunes because it's just such a horrible, painful way to do things. Then there's the whole AAC DRM issue... Sigh... That's a thorn in my side...

The Amazon reader software was quite nice though. Easy to use and it works. Getting it on my Android phone was pretty simple. Still, I can imagine other people might like a different approach. I can certainly see some room for improvement (but that's true for any application).

Blah... Summarizing my thoughts... An SDK is a good step towards adding some degree of freedom inside of a restricted eco-system, like DRM.

+1 for 40hz - Well spoken as always. :) (Can't say the same about myself~! :P )

@MShantz - I think zridling's comment about brown desks was purely sarcastic. i.e. What color is wood? :)

I am most certainly weak in the law-side of patents, and I'm quite certain you could school me on more than a few things there. :) (Not that my inner anarchist actually cares what the law is... :P )

So, I'd like to second 40hz's invitation to hop in on the discussion. The whole patent thing comes up quite a bit here. It would be fantastic to have another chime in, and most certainly a more schooled voice on the subject.

Developer's Corner / Re: Free icons for developers
« Last post by Renegade on July 03, 2011, 05:53 PM »
I've been using www.vectorstock.com for a while and buying vector art there. It's very cheap, as in $1 or $3 (some more). Which pretty much makes it a no-brainer for a lot of things.

I'd posted here about it:

http://cynic.me/2011...mercial-use-cheaply/

There is a set in there that I've been using quite a bit, repeatedly. It's just simple glass buttons and letters, but it looks very nice and with a bit of editing effort, I've got an unlimited set of buttons.

They've got lots of icons as well, some better than others.

However, as it is vector art, you need to do some work with them, but it's worth it. I pretty much use PNGs whenever possible as they simply are far superior to BMPs or GIFs. You could make icons (ICOs) from the vector art, but I find that I rarely need ICO files.

Not free, but at $1? It's about as close as you can get.

Developer's Corner / My First Aussie Gig =D
« Last post by Renegade on July 03, 2011, 04:38 PM »
Well, I managed to get a gig here in Australia. Should be interesting. I'm not exactly sure how things get done here, but we'll find out soon enough! :)

Details are kind of sketchy, but I'll find out this morning when I go in. Hahahah~! I think I know what they're looking for, but we'll see. I generally like to go in 150% prepared, so this will be sort of different in more ways than 1.

My wife is happy, because it means that I'll be getting dressed civilly instead of my "around the house work clothes". :) Which, other than those, I have only my good suits, which I LOVE. I simply tell my tailor whenever I go in, "I need three suits, and I want to be the best dressed person in the room. Show me what I should get." He never disappoints. :)

I was a bit surprised at the style when I got to watch it, but it was very cool to see it shift like it did. It worked well.

It's non-traditional, but that's what gives it so much character.

Very enjoyable -- I was pleasantly surprised! :)

Finished Programs / Re: Idea: App that keeps track of money you find
« Last post by Renegade on July 02, 2011, 08:40 PM »
Very often I am finding money; usually coins or small bills that have been lost or dropped.  Am wanting an app that would keep track of this over time, break-down amounts by currency found and type (coins, bills, some of both) (example: 13 nickels, two $1 bills) and total dollar amount found (examples: today $2.25, 2009 $31.47) and could compare or graph this information.  Would also like an option to enter the location of where it was found, have the app keep track of recurring locations (mall parking lot, city park, etc...) and list or graph totals over time by location.  Was thinking this would almost be a great smart-phone app, but whatever platform would be cool!  Thanks!

What kind of phone do you have?

Living Room / Sita Sings the Blues - A FREE Movie

I found this:

http://www.sitasingstheblues.com/

While reading this:

http://mimiandeunice.com/

Mimi and Eunice is hilarious, so I figured I'd download the "Sita Sings the Blues" movie. (Still downloading -- very much looking forward to it, and too impatient to wait, watch, then post! :) )

But, check this from the site:

You don't need my permission to copy, share, publish, archive, show, sell, broadcast, or remix Sita Sings the Blues. Conventional wisdom urges me to demand payment for every use of the film, but then how would people without money get to see it? How widely would the film be disseminated if it were limited by permission and fees? Control offers a false sense of security. The only real security I have is trusting you, trusting culture, and trusting freedom.

You can read more at both those sites. If you're mildly interested in copyright and all that wonderfulness, check it out.

« Last post by Renegade on July 02, 2011, 05:41 AM »
I've never used the Nikon for video. I suppose I could try, but... well, I'm not sure if it's worth it. It's a camera, so it's fixed focal length... my card is only 16 GB, which would fill pretty fast.

But the pictures it *can* take (not necessarily with me behind it) are spectacular. Seems like an excellent entry DSLR to me. It has room to grow into, and lots of room to move up from once I eventually begin to learn some limits (like with lenses -- I need more there).

And Facebook fires back its first shot: http://techcrunch.co...tnership-with-skype/
Not that this is necessarily a direct response to G+ and Hangouts, after all it's a logical step and who knows if FB had advanced warning of what G+ would include (likely they did though). Still, it's going to compete directly with Hangouts and given Skype's even more proven tech vs. Google's for video and audio chat, it could be interesting. That being said group video chat is currently a paid feature in Skype. The only way they're really going to knock G+ down a notch in this department is if they make it free *on Facebook*. Woooah Nelly that'd be something. If they do that, it will tell you just how serious a thread FB sees G+ as (implying they likely paid Skype enough to make it worth their while).

With MS having an interest in FB and Skype, I wonder if there is anything else going on behind the scenes...

I just saw this:

http://www.techdirt....rth-paying-136.shtml

This may seem like an obvious conclusion but it is strikingly absent from policy conversations about intellectual property, which focus almost exclusively on strengthening enforcement. Nowhere in the industry literature or in major policy statements like the US Trade Representative's annual Special 301 reports will you find an acknowledgement of piracy's underlying causes: the fact that, in most parts of the world, digital media technologies have become much much cheaper without any corresponding increase in access to legal, affordable media goods. DVDs, CDs, and software in Brazil, Russia, Mexico, or South Africa, for example, are still priced at US and European levels, resulting in tiny legal markets accessible to only fractions of the population. Would you pay $136 for a Tron Legacy DVD (the relative price in Mexico, adjusted for local incomes)? How about a $7300 copy of Adobe's Creative Suite? I didn't think so.

I don't know if you're willing to go the DSLR route, but I've been extremely happy with my Nikon D5000.

You can see some pictures with it here:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ryansmyth/

Now, keep in mind that if the picture was taken previous to July 2010, then it's not the Nikon.

These don't have dates, but MOST are with the Nikon:

http://www.facebook....p;type=1&theater

All pictures are reduced in size, so just FYI there. It shoots at 4,288x2848. (12 MP)

The vast majority were taken very quickly, as in having only a couple seconds to point, frame and shoot. They're NOT super-awesome-took-10-hours-to-take-the-worlds-best-picture photos. And, I'm certainly not a photographer -- I'm only learning.

A lot are in low light as well, with only the built-in flash.

Here are some Dead Kennedys concert pics. Taken in low light. I was probably 20 m from the stage, so not great, but for the built in flash, at that distance, and a super-amateur, not too bad.

A few more - Rob Zombie - Dimmu Borghir - and Slayer - However, the Slayer and Rob Zombie pics are with an Ixus 200 IS at the front row of the mosh pit... For all of them I had to hold the camera and shoot blind. The Ixus is a cheap camera, but does a pretty good job all things considered. Still, I'd only call it a backup.

With a quick search, I found this:

Nikon D5000 twin kit w/ Nikon 18-55mm & 55-200mm VR Lenses Digital SLR Camera

For AUD$724.

With prices here being stupidly high, you can probably get a better deal (unless prices in the UK are stupidly high, which for software I know they are quite often).

The Nikon lens I have (my only 1) is an 18~105 mm.

But, with a DSLR you get options galore, and an excuse to sink sick amounts of money into it, because you always really Really REALLY NEED that other lens... :)

I've been drooling over buying a few lenses for a while, and always manage to fail to get anything on eBay. (Holding out for a bit... but not sure how long I can last...)

However, DSLR is a very different route than point and click. Not sure if it's something you'd be interested in. The prices are down to very nice levels now.
