Living Room / Re: An Optical Illusion
« Last post by tomos on February 15, 2011, 10:00 AM »
The bars behind bars effect didn't really hit me either, but what I see is that the light colored  squares around the black bars have a definitely different hue than the light colored squares in the rest of the image (I'm assuming that they in fact have the same color).  Maybe it's my laptop monitor, but I'm surprised no one else mentioned the effect.

no, that's a known effect - the hue/tone depends on the surrounding colour(s).
I'm not sure if colour "changes" this way too, I think so though.

I guess the idea was we are supposed to perceive 4 *horizontal* bars behind the vertical ones.  Didn't really happen for me. meh.

I saw it as 4 grey bars initially - the black bars were in the foreground.
But when I read your response mouser I looked at it again (the first image) and was able to "push" the black bars into the background (which I think is how you see it).

Damn, if I look at that image too long my eyes start dancing...

that shows Cody's banker-looking Uncle (never before seen on a DC mug) sitting on top of a huge pile of his gold coins, thumbing through his bank book.
Isn't that the image of everything we stand against...?

the image, as is, - without the pile of gold coins - has a bit of a look of a leprechaun about it ;-)
Could make a nice mug with a hazy rainbow (or maybe rainbows are a bit overused these days...)

Living Room / Re: DC Front Page

I like the keep it simple idea.

Here's a vague idea that's maybe not that different to some suggestions already made (& maybe not that different to current home page)

Homepage -
centre is a question mark and/or the question "What is dc?"
think of it then like a circle/oval with different segments linking to different pages

  • Forum (maybe with some additional info)
  • Coding snacks [looking to get something made?]
  • Software
  • Reviews and mini-reviews (I dont actually know where the reviews are...)

and maybe more info further down the page.

I notice as a non-member on the forum page, there'S no ability to see the most recent post - no, that's untrue - but maybe it should be moved up to the top of the page ?? or better still, a prominent link towards the top of the page that will display a fuller list of the most recent posts.

Living Room / Re: One of my cats, Titch, passed away yesterday
« Last post by tomos on February 12, 2011, 04:16 AM »
Sorry to hear this sad news Carol

She was a lovely character but always reminded me of a cross between Winnie the Pooh (the bear of little brain) and the Dish of the Day (H2G2).

The two of them together were fascinating - both from the same litter so exactly the same genetics but Titch (who was the runt of the litter) was into absolutely everything and had a real intelligence, Crackers was almost the opposite - fascinated by her sister she could watch for hours.

She was called Crackers because as a kitten she used to love top chase butterflies in the garden (that year we had a plague of cabbage whites so she caught lots). She leaped around the garden like a mad thing with a spring in the tail. In the last 10 years she has steady become more and more stately!
. . . lovely description :-*

I think that only happens if you pass mouser.

Mouser seems to have a monopoly on high numbers. Is there any truth to the rumour that if you pass him you can collect $200, or do you go to jail?

If you pass him you'd better see a doctor

Iirc the specs do mention a SD card slot - so it should be able to export? Otherwise, it's useless :)

also a "usb mini" - but I can see them concentrating on making it look good and not spending enough time on the practicalities. Format could be a problem...
I guess I shouldnt be negative though before the release or before more info announced

well hopefully it can really save it's contents, and better still, export - but I suspect I'm being too demanding there...

[edit] this probably not much help... [/edit]

FF has not been behaving well at all for me over the last couple of months.

  • Hogging memory (even more than usual);
  • shows for ages in task manager after having been closed
  • after being open some time, slow to respond to mouse and keyboard
  • => needs restarts more often

but I'm too lazy to start disabling extensions to try find the problem...

For example, viewed from the comfort of my armchair here in the UK, American politics seems a very frightening beast. You have a right-wing party (the Democrats), an extreme right-wing party (Republicans) and another large political organisation (the Tea Party), for people for whom even the Republicans don't seem right-wing enough. Terrifying.

That's an interesting perspective. From my point of view, there's an extreme left-wing party (the Democrat party which has been overrun by the extreme-left "Progressives"), a moderate-to-left-leaning party (Republicans), and a bunch of people who have noticed that the Republicans, who are traditionally "supposed" to be right-wing, have moved so far left (so-called Tea Party-folk).

I'm fairly disillusioned with all parties at this stage - they're all afraid to stand up to the bank(er)s and they're all afraid to regulate the corporations (yes, I realise that some of them dont think that way anyways).
Deozaan, you may consider the New Yorker magazine a left leaning publication - but this article actually gave me a much greater respect and understanding for the US Republicans of the 80's and 90's. But it also gives a bit of perspective to the Tea Party....

I love how it looks like Baby Cody's eyes are half-closed and the mouth fell open with the head tilted backwards. That's exactly how I was sitting for a while before snapping the picture :)

:D yes, well caught!

Hi all,

The next mini bundle is out: http://bundlelytic.com/fire-sale/

Get 360Amigo System Speedup PRO and Returnil System Safe 2011 worth $60 for only $15. This deal will be featured for the next 48 hours.

There's also another 11 hours to go before the price of the first mini bundle goes up to $15 so buy now if you're interested.

Jackson,
a suggestion: why dont you start a "bundlelytic offers" thread - I suspect some people are missing these offers, cause they not interested in the apps mentioned in the thread title....

My work style is pretty basic. I simply put in whatever time and effort the task requires. I don't push myself to exhaustion. But I don't lock myself into a rigid work/break cycle either. I'm quite good at detecting when additional effort on my part is becoming counterproductive. When I feel that happening, I'll either take a break, or move onto something else.
my emphasis

I think that's the key there -
if you dont push yourself too hard, you're probably fine; if you do push yourself too hard, you need a timer :)

Do you use a timer Paul?

I jump around between using and not using one that it's not even funny...or limited to a single answer anymore.
[...]
P.S. Thanks for replying.

I used to use App103's Instant Boss while working on computer, but I was having focus problems with it - since I stopped using it I've intended to get a 'real' timer - but havent yet... :-[

PS thanks for posting

The link is about whether it's helpful to take breaks or not so I'll talk about what I think about that.

Do you use a timer Paul?
I dont, maybe I should -
I certainly agree from my own experience that taking breaks is essential for:

1) concentration
2) health
3) stamina (being able to be concentrated all through the day - without burning myself up)

I can concentrate for long periods of time without breaks -when under pressure- and I actually enjoy it, but I reckon I would burn out eventually. On a related note: I think these days many employers recognise that work-addiction is not helpful to them in the medium or long term.

I purchased three licenses the last time Oops had a sale, and I am struggling with it currently.

hmmm, I was hoping to buy something easy to use (not for me) but that doesnt sound overly promising
