I don't do too many IndieGoGo Projects.  Not sure why... exposure maybe?

But they do allow for some more interesting projects than on Kickstarter.  That's a good segue into this one - Operation Let's Build a Goddamn Tesla Museum.

Nikola Tesla was the father of the electric age. Despite having drop-kicked humanity into a second industrial revolution, up until recently he's been an unsung hero in history books. If you don't know who Tesla is, go read this.

Tesla's final laboratory is located in the sleepy town of Shoreham, New York.  It's known as Wardenclyffe and it's where Tesla attempted to build a tower that would provide free wireless energy to the entire earth. Unfortunately, Tesla lost his funding before the project was completed and in 1917 the Wardenclyffe tower was demolished.  Subsequently, the land was sold to a film and paper manufacturer.

However, the land, laboratory, and foundation beneath the tower are still there and very recently went up for sale. And right now a non-profit is trying to buy the property and turn it into a Nikola Tesla Museum. The property is listed at $1.6 million, and this non-profit has received a matching grant from New York State of up to $850k.  This means that if we can raise $850k, New York State will match us for that same amount -- putting the total raised at $1.7 million.

There is currently another offer on the table from someone who wants to purchase the property potentially tear it down or turn it into a retail establishment. There is no Tesla museum in the United States, despite Tesla's extraordinary accomplishments.  If we can outbid this other person and buy the land it will permanently be protected as a historic site and eventually converted into a Nikola Tesla Science Center.

The folks behind this project are a 501(c) non-profit organization and they've spent the past 15 years trying to find a way to save this property.  This IndieGoGo account is linked directly to their bank and all the funds will go directly to them.

Even if we raise the full amount and end up with $1.7 million, this isn't enough to build an actual museum / science center. But it will effectively put the property into the right hands so it can eventually be renovated into something fitting for one of the greatest inventors of our time.

Internet, this is where you come in: HELP ME BUILD A GODDAMN TESLA MUSEUM.

More details about the campaign can be found over here.

All the funds raised from this campaign are going directly to a non-profit group.  Details about the non-profit behind this project can be found on their website: Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe

Still haven't checked it out yet... and reserving judgement... When it comes to MS, things often get overblown. So, no idea yet...

My thoughts exactly.  And seeing the rumors of Surface at $199 makes me hope that it's good...

^ I get what you mean, but I think the reaction that you're getting is towards the idea of including these things into bittorrent, i.e.

torrent is good stuff, but it can be improved.  my suggestions:
--ability to add/remove files and folders from an existing torrent that is being shared live already.
--ability to add/block users on a per torrent basis

You add those abilities to the torrent thing and you'll have one badass file sharing system.

So the replies have been more towards adding these things to torrents, which is sort of homogenizing what torrents are away from what they are currently to make it something less concise.  Now saying something new (X) should be created with decentralized distribution but having these features would be cool... but when people start trying to build on something existing to take it away from what it currently is meant for to add features you end up with sort of a Frankenstein monster... it's happened before, and I'm sure it will happen again.

Truthfully, I like when a developer knows what they want to do and sticks with it, not adding features to try to make it the be all and end all.  BitTorrent isn't meant for certain types of things- it's meant for a large distributed network that allows people to download largish bits of data by the packet from distributed sources with redundant backup, along with the ability to feed this.  It's not perfect... but it does it well.  The other things- that's why we have other ways of doing things.  Focus on making it better within its space is the recipe for success here... not trying to shoehorn it into other spaces IMO.

FieldRunners
BIT.TRIP BEAT
Uplink
SpaceChem

(links are to the games on Steam)

beat the average and get Spirits.

I have the first four on PC and they're enjoyable little games - especially at this price.  It's worth it for Uplink and SpaceChem alone.  Don't know anything about the last one.

General Software Discussion / Re: Why Everything 1.2.1.451a still Alpha?
« Last post by wraith808 on August 14, 2012, 04:08 PM »
You could e-mail the developer to ask why.  It could be as simple as he's not had a chance to work on it so hasn't migrated it.  Or it could be some feature that you don't use.  Alpha generally implies that he's added features that aren't ready for general consumption or has plans for features that haven't been implemented to one degree or another.  Of course the exact definition varies by who you ask... so I'd ask the developer.

ExcerptThe micro-sized, Arduino enabled, usb development board - cheap enough to leave in any project!

The Story: We set out to build a little brother to the wonderful Arduino line of development boards - we were tired of leaving our valuable Arduino's behind in projects, or worse, ripping apart old projects to build new ones! We also felt the Arduino was too big and powerful for many projects where we only needed a few pins, or an SPI or I2C bus. And so the Digispark was born! To us, the best things about the Arduino is the community, the easy of use, and the IDE - by making the Digispark an Arduino compatible development board all of those remain common. Plug it in, power your project with USB or external sources, program it with the Arduino IDE, and easily use existing Arduino code! But with its small size and low cost you can feel free to leave it in your project, give one to a friend, and use them everywhere!

The Specs:

Support for the Arduino IDE 1.0+ (OSX/Win/Linux)
Power via USB or External Source - 5v or 7-35v (automatic selection)
On-board 500ma 5V Regulator
Built-in USB (and serial debugging)
6 I/O Pins (2 are used for USB only if your program actively communicates over USB, otherwise you can use all 6 even if you are programming via USB)
8k Flash Memory (about 6k after bootloader)
I2C and SPI (vis USI)
PWM on 3 pins (more possible with Software PWM)
ADC on 4 pins
Power LED and Test/Status LED (on Pin0)

Sociopath == Donnie Darko
Psychopath == Shutter Island
Psychotic == The Hitcher

Why so serious ?  :D

+1 for referencing a great movie... The Hitcher!

Of course now that BitTorrent will be making serious money, they've just painted a great big target on their backs. Especially since anybody that has a grudge with torrents in general (i.e. RIA, MPAA, et al) now has a nice juicy bone to toss to their attorneys and bounty hunters.

Weren't they already making serious money in legitimate uses of the product, i.e. World of Warcraft?  Or did none of that include them?  And considering how high profile some of the users of the technology are, and because of the fact that it is a transport, I don't think it will be as easy to do to them what was done to Dotcom.

One problem may also be it's written in Delphi. I don't know what sort of license goes with Delphi, but there may (or probably are) terms in Delphi's license that precludes you making it "open."

No, there isn't anything there.  There are many FOSS projects using Delphi.

Context,an excellent text Editor more efficient than NotePad++ for very large files.
AxBase,a MDB (and ADO) database front end.
PyScripter, a well known Python IDE.
HeidiSQL, a MySQL Frontend
osFinancials, Accounting Software
dxbx, a port of cxbx which is an xbox emulator for the pc
StarUML, Dev-PHP, Dev-C++, XanaNews, SynWrite, and many more.

And I watched Batman last week.  The audience clapped at the end.  I don't know why they were clapping for that snoozefest.  Maybe they were glad it was over, I don't get it.

It's a matter of taste, I suppose.  I enjoyed it, and most that I know did also.  And I'm not just one to go along with the crowd especially in the case of movies.
7118
this sounds like a fine product and a quick check showed that it retails here for about ~$130-$150. so IainB got it at a really good price.

i couldn't tell from the review but does this headset come with the box thingy where one can adjust volume and such? something like this:
 (see attachment in previous post)

No.  It comes with the headset, a USB dongle (the normal kind -not the mini), and a spool that doubles as a cord organizer and a place to put the dongle if you don't want to reach around to the back of the computer.  The only controls are on the headset, and it doesn't have a separate DSP (which is what those usually are).

It will probably be the same as what it does now, I'd think... steam doesn't really care, nor try to impose any limits on you.  There's an icon at the bottom to let you know what platforms a game is for, and other than that, you can buy it.  I've never bought anything on the Mac, so I can't say for sure if it restricts (or warns) you if you try to buy for a platform that something isn't available for, but I can say that you can see everything.
7121
I have it also.  I use it for gaming, and it's pretty cool for that.  It has great isolation, bass, and the 7.1. works amazingly well.  I actually use it with my desktop, so I don't have any problems with the dongle, and do like that the charging cord also doubles as a wired solution when you have to use it but it needs charging.  My only complaint is that it's a bit heavy after prolonged use, and can become a bit stifling, but all of them at this level suffer from that kind of problem.

Also, IainB apparently got a good deal... it's usually about $110-130 on most outlets (Amazon's showing $113 right now for me, and newegg (where I got it from) is showing $124)

I still haven't had that problem (shrugs).

And Impulse (that POS) already has applications other than games in the store.

I still think that the word App is being overused - what I usually think of when I think of Apps is a The Single Responsibility Principlew, i.e. something that does one thing well.  Those are the types of Apps I look for also.

It's been a few years since I dissolved mine- at the time I had group rates with only three members through BCBS.  The biggest disadvantage was the lack of balance in liability because of the size of the group- premiums ballooned very quickly.  But I never had a problem with taxes, especially since I found that at the time corporations were very sloppy about filing the requisite paperwork when it came to transfers between corporations.  They'll file the W2 quite quickly... but not much for paying another corporation for work.
7124
Well, as long as what you have works for you.  I haven't found anything yet that I can't pay in advance... it's just that their systems don't sometimes keep up with it as a forward payment.   This includes a PO Box... I'm not sure why your post office doesn't let you re-up in advance... mine doesn't care.

Living Room / Microsoft keeps DNT as default in IE10
« Last post by wraith808 on August 08, 2012, 01:23 PM »
Ok, so it's not exactly altruistic, but Microsoft sticks to its guns, keeps Do Not Track on by default in IE10.  Of course, its up to the advertisers to abide by the DNT headers, but it's still a step in the right direction.
