Ugh!  Blahhhh!  Yuck!!

Spoiler
I would have just flushed the toilet and let the water flow drag it all out of my bowels.

I don't think his "to the moon and back" statement is an accurate measurement of the length of the bowels. I've always heard the bowels were approximately 30 feet in length.

BTW, if the HDDs are that old and running that hot NOW is the time to backup all the data on them and replace them.

Isn't having a hot hard drive causing data loss kind of a misnomer?

I read somewhere that Google did a test on their zillions of hard drives and found that the drives that were running on the cool side were more likely to fail than the drives running hot.

Interesting trivia:

I just noticed this thread was started by one Darryl, back in March of 2005. Darryl is/was the 11th person to join the forum and has only made one post: This one. He hasn't been around since January 2006 and yet this thread is constantly revisited and probably the longest and most viewed thread on the site.

Isn't it amazing the difference one person can make? Darryl's legacy has lived on throughout the years and he may not even know it.

im looking for a program a freinds freind has that will let you manafacture and download fake pokemon and download them to the ds

Try Pokesav. You'll also need some way to transfer your save files from your DS game cartridge to your PC and back.

It works with Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, the latest games in the series.

This is worth the $10 for Portal alone. The fact that you get 4 other games (HL2, Episode 1, Episode 2, and Team Fortress 2) for free is just frosting on the cake.

I've been looking a bit into Magmahost. I've been using DreamHost for a long time and I've been satisfied with it. Though I think I could fit all my needs into the $47.04 plan.

I'm mostly trying to figure out if it's worth it, since I have over 150 e-mail addresses with DreamHost and I'd have to have to recreate them all manually at Magmahost.

If you want your site be transferred open a ticket with our support department, just supply your old cPanel details. We did used to have a script that did this for us but it was being misused.

Edit: Contact Support, we will transfer your previous account manually just provide them with the login details for ftp and phpmyadmin if you have SQL databases.

DreamHost doesn't use cPanel. And just transferring the files available from FTP or SQL database info won't fully move me from DreamHost to MagmaHost.

Also, your 6-day money-back guarantee doesn't instill confidence in me that you are confident in your service. That's not even a week. It will take the Domain Name Servers a couple of those days to update to point my domain to you guys. So it's like a 4-day guarantee? I don't think I could even get everything moved over in a week if it meant recreating my blogs, SQL DBs, transferring files, updating DNS records, recreating my 150+ e-mail addresses, recreating SVN DBs, etc.

I'd also like to know where in the world you guys are based (incorrect English is generally a warning sign for me for professional products/services) and why you have only one testimonial on your website:

“My hosting is without flaws, thank you for making it painless, pleasant and most of all hassle free!”

David R. Atwood (Professional Plan)

Thanks for answering these questions. I'm a bit of a skeptic, but I sure would like to know for sure if MagmaHost is going to be better than DreamHost. I wouldn't mind cutting my hosting bills in half by making the switch if I knew I'd have at least equivalent services and features, and if switching over wasn't going to be too much of a hassle.

Living Room / Re: adding memory to my Dell Precision 380
« Last post by Deozaan on April 14, 2009, 12:42 AM »
Got a response from them today.

They said that their website clearly says my netbook can't handle any upgrades, and that if the scanner misidentified my PC, well, I agreed to that possibility happening before running the scanner.

The good news is that my warranty is probably still valid, considering the following:

Opening up your system and adding Crucial RAM should in NO WAY void your original warranty.

The Magnuson-Moss Act, enacted into law by the US Congress in 1975, protects consumers' right to use the products they want.

How does it work? In legal terms, the Act prohibits manufacturers from requiring consumers to use products or services from a particular manufacturer in order to keep their original product warranty valid. That means, in most cases, you don't have to upgrade with your system manufacturer's memory or memory from another manufacturer specified by your system manufacturer to maintain your system warranty.

In much simpler terms, you can add Crucial RAM and your system warranty will remain valid!

I guess I just need to write back now and ask what to do with the RAM I can't use. Am I SOL because I clicked the checkbox saying I agreed to the license or will they give me my money back? Time will tell.

General Software Discussion / Re: I'm Steaming About Steam
« Last post by Deozaan on April 12, 2009, 04:10 PM »
The only problem I've really had with Steam is that sometimes it takes a week to download the games, which I think is because I'm behind two physical firewalls (my router and the school's router) so I can't properly forward ports.

I've never had to contact Steam support and I usually wait for a Weekend Deal to buy games so I often get them on average at 50% off the retail price.

[EDIT]I was typing this up when Eóin posted that response. I think the xkcd comic goes very well with my point of view here.[/EDIT]

I think people are just getting tired of buying the same thing multiple times for different formats. If they want to treat us like they're licensing the content to us, the license should allow us to play the music or movie in whatever format we choose.

I think I wouldn't mind paying twice as much for a movie or an album if I knew I could play it on any digital or physical format in the future without having to buy it again. Sure, I might need to pay a couple dollars for physical storage devices (i.e. blank recordable media) but if I have already paid for the right to view a movie or listen to music any time I want, then why should I be required to pay for that right again?

I haven't seen any place where you buy movies or music that require you to sign a lease/license agreement that says you are limited to the format in which you bought it and that the license expires after x years or for the next format. So it's not surprising that people feel like they own the right to view/hear the content for the rest of their life and aren't happy about having to buy it again. After all, rereleasing a movie from VHS to DVD to Blu-Ray costs virtually nothing and is almost pure profit. Likewise, rereleasing an album from cassette tape to CD to digital formats also cost virtually nothing.

I'm not against companies making a profit, I just think that if they're going to pretend to treat us like we're paying for a license to the content, they need to sell it as a license (making sure that customers know the terms of the license) and work out a more agreeable license.

I don't think movies/music should be free (as in beer) but I think that once you've paid for the right to see/hear it, you should be free (as in freedom) to convert it (losslessly) to any format you choose and view/listen to the content on any device you choose.

It should also be reasonable that if you own the right to view/hear the content, that you can allow others who don't own the right to the content to view/listen to the content as well, much like having friends over to watch a movie or listen to your music album.

I'd like to discourage you from buying a phone just on net recommendations, though. Pick a few candidates, then go to a store and hold each phone in your hand, and make sure to try the keyboard.

The problem with that is most stores have display models which aren't built the same. I've played around with a display model and the buttons were very mushy and hard to press and generally sucked. Then I felt the real deal and they were much better.

Stay away from touch-screens (unless you are really certain you want one)

Why? What's wrong with them? I played around with a real iPhone last night and I was actually very surprised at how easy it was to type using the on-screen keyboard. And if you fat finger something you can just keep typing and it will recommend the word you probably meant to type. For instance, if you pressed "yjr" it would recommend "the" and all you have to do is press the space bar to automatically change it.

So in that case first choose the OS, then find a phone to match.

Speaking of OS, can anyone tell me about Android phones? Is that the OS or is Android something entirely different? And here's a related question: Any opinions on T-Mobile G1?

And does anyone have personal experience using 3G? Can you describe to me what it is and how it works? I read Wikipedia and other sources but I still don't think I understand what it is. Was I right when I said I thought it would allow me to have internet access on my PC anywhere I had cell service?

I was a long time and very happy owner of a Nokia E70. It has full keyboard yet still fits fine in your pocket.

That one looks great, but it doesn't have 3G in the US model (or maybe I'm reading this info wrong) and it doesn't have GPS either.

Instead though I went down the smartphone road, which as a techie I'm extremely happy with.

Where's the keyboard on that one? Is it all touch screen like the iPhone?

Living Room / Cell Phone recommendations?
« Last post by Deozaan on April 12, 2009, 12:28 AM »
I've been happily and contentedly without a cell phone since last October and went purely to using Skype for all my phone needs. It's amazingly freeing not being interrupted by a phone all the time and not being able to even hear the phone ring (since all sound from the PC is routed through the headphones). It's been a peaceful, simple life.

However, that must come to an end now. It is now necessary for my wife and I to get cell phones. Since I generally hate talking to people on phones I never cared about what features they had since all I needed was something that would allow me to call other people. But this time I have certain requirements and I'm hoping that DC members can help suggest phones and/or service to meet my needs.

Here are my requirements:

  • Speaker Phone
  • Can do 3-way (or conference) calls
  • Can show video
  • Has a keyboard layout for easy text entry
  • Internet
  • Can store lots of contacts
  • GPS/Maps would be useful
  • BlueTooth would be useful as well

That's all I can think of for my needs for features. Here's some more information for you to help customize your responses to my wants/needs:

  • I found out recently that my netbook has something in it called 3G, which I think allows me to get internet access anywhere I have cell service or something like that. I supposed it would be useful to be able to make use of that, so if you know a phone that can do that and/or a service that provides that, I'd be interested in learning more.
  • I am generally a hater of Apple products for a variety of reasons, so I'm wary of the iPhone. But I won't let my prejudices get in the way of getting the right phone. If the iPhone really is that great, then maybe I'll consider the steep price tag and the two year commitment to AT&Ts services required to use it.
  • If you have a specific phone model for me, please also recommend some good accessories such as bluetooth headset/earpiece, car charger, etc.
  • If you can also provide price and where to buy, that would greatly be appreciated!
  • If you know specific phones/carriers/accessories to avoid, please let me know and explain why I should avoid them.

Thanks in advance!
