Can DCUpdater detect CH+S original "installation" folder, even if CH+S is used in "portable mode" ?

No; DCUpdater can *not* be used for portable installs.

Eh, im not super paranoid about privacy, so if there are some existing free tools that do what i want and more, probably not worth the effort.  As long as they make it relatively easy to answer those questions i listed above, no need to reinvent the wheel.

N.A.N.Y. 2015 / Program Idea: Track and Chart Computer Activity Times
« Last post by mouser on October 09, 2014, 11:00 AM »
I need some help figuring out if there are already good existing tools for this and if the idea is worth doing.

This would be a small utility that would be running in the background.  It would be keeping track of periods of activity/inactivity on the computer.  It would probably be able to track manual events as well -- in other words let you set some hotkeys to register when some arbitrary event you care about happens.
It wouldn't be logging which keys you press or which applications you are using, but just very coarse information about when you are active on your computer and when you aren't.  At least that's my current thinking.

And then it would let you browse the log data, and chart it in different ways.

I'm imagining that the tool would be useful for answering questions like:
  • What time did I stop working on the computer yesterday?
  • What days of the week do I use the computer most?
  • What hours of the day do I use the computer most?
  • Let me see how much I worked on the computer and during what hours on monday.

I know there are some good apps for tracking detailed information about what programs you are using and when.. This is much more about tracking general activity patterns.

Thoughts? Useful? Worthless? Already exists?

Are you using the portable version of CHS?

Windows sometimes does a very messed up thing with .chm help files you download from the internet, it silently marks them as untrusted and "blocks" the help file and refuses to display any contents in them, while not telling you what it is doing.

If this ever happens to you, right-click on the .chm help file in your file explorer, choose file properties from the menu, and you should see an "Unblock" button you can press to fix the problem.

Well, what about an application that I've put on a webpage that noone knows about - not even Google, but is technically publicly accessible?
oh that's fine.  we don't do fineprint here. if it meets the spirit of the idea it's fine.

Perhaps a compromise solution might be to list the normal NANY apps and do it as we usually do, but then have like a supplemental summary of OTHER RELEASES THIS YEAR by authors who participate in NANY?

So you must code something new but we will also list your OTHER new free software released this year, as a kind of "SEE ALSO"

Can you check the options on your "Selection Capture Options" tab, and let us know what they are set to?  these in particular:

Nope it's a different one.

Yikes! That's the first I've heard of that.
I have a couple of questions:
  • Is the problem reliably reproducible? (you may have to restart program to reproduce it)
  • If you left click and hold the mouse and drag, same problem?
  • Does it capture non-select-region type screenshots ok?
  • If it doesn't happen on every capture, can you identify any factors that might be unusual when you get the error?

Please please please someone with artistic abilities make a custom mug design.

You know.. we do have an unreleased amazing image created by DC member App103, that we were/are going to use for a Coding Snacks tshirt, that could be repurposed..

I guess I just feel that maybe NANY should be a celebration of software released in the last 12 months.  That way we aren't PENALIZING people for releasing stuff a few months early..
Imagine person #A releases a new cool program every month.  Person #B writes a program in february but doesn't release it until December.
By our rules, person #B qualifies for NANY but person #A doesn't, and person #A's programs are disqualified from any NANY.
I don't like that.

I've thought for a while that NANY should be a celebration of apps released in the past year.. Or at least indie releases that haven't gotten much public attention..

Easy question to answer:

Any software that has not yet been released publicly can be entered into NANY.
Yes you should start a new thread in this NANY 2015 section for the app.

A more difficult question concerns software that was released in 2014.  I am of the mind that we should include any software first publicly released in 2014, rather than restricting NANY to only things that have been written in last few months.

How about taking the notion of "printing" more loosely as 'arranging cards on a sheet' (for various sizes of actual/virtual paper, e.g. from A4 to A2, for those with bigger monitors)?

yeah, i would make it work with any kind of card layout and paper size, that's not a problem.

it does raise the interesting issue of stuff not fitting on a card though.. interesting dilemma.

Lots of great comments here so far -- you guys no more about this type of software than I do and have more experience with these kinds of tools, so I need your assistance.
Some quick thoughts:

I do *not* want to try to reproduce the functionality of the best-in-glass general purpose tools.  They are too good at what they do for me to think I can do better.

I'm much more interested in creating something unique, experimental, opinionated, and focused on doing things fundamentally different than the existing tools.

So, one possible angle to this is to make a tool that is really more about PRINTING cards (or sheets) from your item entries, rather than a tool meant to let you do lots of virtual work on screen.. A tool designed to help you manage and print physical cards (or todo lists) for physical use.

That's just one angle -- I'm open to going in a different direction.

Yes, so far I've only noticed shotcut-icons missing.

ok that's a big clue -- it's enough to let me at least go looking at what it could be.  hopefully you will be willing to try some beta versions of farr to see if i can figure it out.

Screenshot Captor / Screenshot Captor 4.10 todo list
« Last post by mouser on October 08, 2014, 10:05 AM »
On my todo list for next update is:

  • Allow user to save + load object editing tools settings (arrow sizes, fonts, etc.)
  • Allow user to configure how Ctrl+C (copy) behaves; right now it is context sensitive (in object editing mode if you have an object selected it will copy the object only); some people would prefer Ctrl+C always copy the full flattened image bitmap.
  • Possibly some kind of ruler or measurement thing

N.A.N.Y. 2015 / NANY 2015 Pledge - Some Kind of Unique Productivity Tool
« Last post by mouser on October 08, 2014, 05:39 AM »
I am always fascinated by new productivity utilities and ideas, and I'd like to create another one for this year's NANY 2015.

I was actually thinking of making a kind of lean and mean utility Digital Index Card Notes system, that would compliment the index-card system I have been using to keep track of todo items and ideas for many years now.
You can read about my real-world non-digital index card system here, and a brief old discussion of some ideas for a digital version here.

My current best idea is not to try to replicate visually the idea of physical index cards that you can shuffle around on screen, but rather to provide a database-driven system for creating "virtual" cards (i.e. small entries with title and text), with some keywords/group identification, with good fast search/sort/filtering, and then provide functionality for PRINTING such cards on index-card stock.

So it wouldn't be a replacement for having a physical collection of index cards, but a supplemental tool to help you create, print, and search them.

Alternatively, one could imagine the utility as a more general purpose tool for maintaining a lean and mean database of entries that you want to print out on card stock (of whatever size); so think flash cards, etc.

Just my current idea, can't guarantee it will be the one i finally end up with.

Another related alternative would be not to print the entries on index card stock, but perhaps to assist in printing a daily TODO list from selected entries, or something similar.

Thanks.
For those who don't know what Tomos is referring to: In previous versions of SC, to do a selected region capture, you moved the cursor to the upper left, then left-clicked, and HELD DOWN the left mouse and dragged to the lower right and released.  In the new version you can still do that, but you can also just use a single left-click and release to mark the two corners.  Escape will cancel in either case.

works fine here -- i wonder if you dont have some other tool that has assigned alt+w and is catching it..
