US State Department Official Killed In Libya Was A Top Online Gamer

I guess he honed his state department skills in EVE.

Sean Smith, the U.S. state department official killed along with the U.S. ambassador to Libya and two others last night, was a top player in the online game EVE.

During the attack Smith was reportedly speaking with fellow gamers, who were the first to identify him as among the dead.

Known online as Vile Rat, Smith played the game since 2006 and intermittently served on the sci-fi massively multiplayer online (MMO) game's player-elected Council.

NSA Whistleblower Details How The NSA Has Spied On US Citizens Since 9/11

In a short video called "The Program," Binney explains how the agency took part of one of the programs he built and started using it to spy on virtually every U.S. citizen without warrants under the code-name Stellar Wind.

Binney details how the top-secret surveillance program, the scope of which has never been made public, can track electronic activities—phone calls, emails, banking and travel records, social media—and map them to collect "all the attributes that any individual has" in every type of activity and build a profile based on that data.

"So that now I can pull your entire life together from all those domains and map it out and show your entire life over time," Binney says.

I guess that the purpose of that quote was somehow missed?  The abyss looks back at you means that when you begin to know somthing that is fundamentally different from yourself, you take a piece of it with you and it changes you and vice versa.  If you do the same sorts of thing as the person that you're calling a monster in order to punish them for being a monster, doesn't that make you the same sort of monster?

I use the n52, and I just got the nostromo off of Woot a bit ago.  I swear by it.  I use it in FPS (BF2142, Section 8, Killing Floor, Borderlands, Arma 2, Payday, Sniper Elite, BFBC2/Vietnam) and MMOs, and other games.  In every game, it takes my hand off of the keyboard and puts the commands in a small area.  The only thing I don't like is that it doesn't have enough (or dedicated) keys for the shifts, so you have to take a key away in order to get access to the other magnitudes of keys.  I have a G13 also, and though I love the fact that it has more keys, the n52/Nostromo fits the hand better- the G13 is truly a small keyboard, and so takes more retraining.

But get a nostromo and a programmable mouse (I have a naga, though I think if I had it to do over again, I'd get a Hex), and take a bit to learn what your patterns are in the way of controls that you use, and don't be afraid to tweak.  It might not make you better, but it will make your experience better.

True, but I am more inclined to believe that a laptop/notebook is probably more economical and versatile than an ipad or like tablet could every be.

That's a common perception that I disagree with.  I think it comes down to input mechanism more than the laptop vs tablet.  I used a clamcase with my ipad... and it was exactly the same as a netbook.  But then, it started to suffer from the same disadvantages.  I'm hoping that when I can get that logitech case it will be a better experience.  I still wouldn't use it for my full time work computer.  But it does/will have advantages over that.

If the legal system was infallible, and the amount of money didn't factor into the level of law and punishment (notice I didn't say anything about justice.. there's none of that in the legal system), then... I'd still be against it.

I think Nietzsche said it best: "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster. And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you."

It does indeed seem like more of a function of an ill-conceived scheme and not knowing the needs rather than the particular device.  In fact, some of the issues could easily be alleviated, and some of their notions of the problems stated in the article show how much this is true.  While it is true that there isn't a MS Word application, there are a couple of very good applications for editing such on the ipad.  Would I want to use them for my primary machine?  Nope.  But yeah... this falls squarely on the RFQ stage rather than the device.

DC Gamer Club / Request for Help from Skyrim Players
« Last post by wraith808 on September 09, 2012, 05:30 PM »
So, I've recently gotten bitten by the Skyrim bug.  It's great... I can't recommend it enough!  Less than 2 months in, and over 160 hours played speaks for itself.  I did find one area lacking- and software made to fix it lacking also.  I've come to the point where I want to play another character, and there is no interface to manage that.

Software that I create tends to come from need and something to learn, and those to crossed enough that I've been working on the Skyrim Character Manager instead of playing for the past couple of weeks.  It helps to manage multiple characters and their files, and also adds some place to store information on the characters.  It's usable currently, though I'm not ready to release it yet.  I wanted to get some input on some of the features first.

SkyrimCharacterManager.png

This is the primary screen.  It is divided into separate parts: The toolbar area with separate toolbars for managing characters and references, the character grid that lists all characters stored in the database, the character files which lists all active and inactive files for the selected character, and the character details that has space for other details about the selected character.

MainToolBar.png

The main toolbar holds all of the controls for managing the character.  The data group contains all commands related to managing the actual database, i.e. adding a record, entering edit mode, and deleting.  The editing group contains supplemental database commands, i.e. saving data and canceling edits, and refreshing the data from the database.

The files group contains commands related to the files for the selected character, i.e. refreshing the list of files from the disk, activating a character and deactivating a character.

Finally, the tools group contains miscellaneous commands to launch skyrim, initialize a character after first creating the data record, backing up the character files, and entering the settings.

ReferenceToolBar.png

The reference toolbar contains commands for launching various reference sites that I've found useful, and the help and obligatory about this application.

Before I go on to the other areas of the application, I thought it worth discussing the design behind the application.  The application attempts to pair up data stored in a database to the location of files on the disk.  It uses the location of the Skyrim save games to facilitate this.  Each character has a directory underneath the main skyrim save path.  When a character is initialized, all saves related to that character are copied to this directory.  When a character is deactivated, all files with that character's name are moved from the main directory to that directory.  When a character is activated, all of the files from that directory are copied back to the main directory.  The only operation that involves removing files from the drive is the deactivation.  All others leave any files that are not overwritten in place.

CharactersAndCharacterFiles.png

The character and character files area shows all of the characters, and when each is selected, shows that character's files both active, and inactive, on separate tabs.

CharacterDetails.png

The bottom area of the application holds purely fluff related data points in relation to the background of a character.

What I need help on

So far, I've made this to what I want, but I'll take any suggestions from what I've outlined.  What I really had questions in regards to was file management.  I've taken a very cautious approach.  Backups are always taken from the main directory and copied to whatever backup location is specified, assuming that those are the most recent saves.  The only operation that removes files is the deactivation of a character.  Other operations don't clear out the files there before performing their operation.  By default, the application asks you before every overwrite.  And even after creating a character, you have to manually initialize the directory before that character can be managed.  Is this overkill?

Emails and Phone Calls are different levels of things. I have a sandboxed email for precisely this stuff. But the minute I saw "give us your phone" I just blasted it with a fake one. To me, that crosses a line.

There are certain things where you're going to have cold calls and sales reps in addition to/instead of e-mail.  They're a high end component company, so I can understand the whole phone call thing.  But not to have an opt-in was what annoyed me.

Yeah... I know what you mean. They're just trying damn hard to drum up business, but it's bloody annoying. Had a few of those calls myself.

Still, I have to give them credit for the free ebooks.

Oh.. I do too.  Especially after reading them.. and the fact that they continued to put them out.  The git one really helped me out.  And Smartgit looks pretty cool.

Gotta say, hats off to them for the super attitude that seems all to rare now. They've definitely earned a big, massive, huge +1 in my (e)books~! ;D

Anyways, thought I'd pass that along. Hope it's useful for someone.

It was sketchy at first- we'd been looking at their component suite at work, and though we decided not to go with them, I signed up for their list and saw these (and other things that they've released free, ie metro studio and smart git- smart git isn't apparently free to all, but metro studio still is at http://www.syncfusio...ownloads/metrostudio)

They kept calling me at the number - thankfully I'd given them my google voice number, so it kept going to voicemail, but it was annoying.  I called them to say so, and they stopped calling... but that left a bit of a bitter taste, so I never recommended them...

Again, if you guys wish to nitpick words and go on about it as if it's religious or political debate,  I used "rarely" word here to imply personal experience.

Not nitpicking words, but as everyone has said, is genuinely interested.  No one is attempting to attack- it's just that much of what you said is only anecdotal, so the only way to deal with it is to ask you to see how this could have occurred.  If you've moved past this and don't really have any way to substantiate it by anything that might be other than anecdotal and unwilling to/ don't want to discuss it just say so.  Everyone here was just trying to help it seems and see things from your perspective- not pick you apart.

OSes are just like the hardware they run on- tools- and each has its uses and problems.  And each person's experience with them is going to be individual.  But if you throw out phrases like "Those who are using Visual studio knows Why I am saying this, because microsoft's own programs make the system unusable," or "I hope you remember XP days with regular fixing of broken stuff," that doesn't sound either anecdotal or personal experience, so of course people are going to chime in.  Then if you change course midstream, you can't expect everyone to change course with you so unexpectedly.

Those who are using Visual studio knows Why I am saying this, because microsoft's own programs make the system unusable.
I've been running every single version (not every edition, of course!) and service pack of Visual Studio from 6 to 2010 SP1, and will soon be installing 2012. I've even been using VS on Win9x. While the first VS.NET version was pretty crappy and unstable, I've never had VS affect my system stability, and never heard of stories like that from friends or co-workers.

Same here all the way back to 9x. Hell we've even got one guy that (does legacy stuff) is still doing VB code with VS6, on Windows 8.

Same here... including unfortunately the VB code.   Anything other than anecdotal evidence of this VS making the system unusable bit?

Sure, there's some nice things about OSX, and the build quality on some macbooks is better than a lot of non-OSX PCs. But there's plenty of problems as well, and plenty of funny security holes as well :-)

 +1

They're all just tools, and all of them have their pros and cons.

I am pretty sure I am here because DonationCoder is usually open for technical discussions. I did not know it is against the board rules to question the advantages of Linux and OSX. Sorry, must have read them wrong.

As 40hz said- it's the presentation, not the comment.  When you say...

Bullshit. That urban myth is not true anymore since... uhm... Windows Me? Or Windows 98?
Of course a system with a lot of auto-start entries will start slower.

Even Linux.

Now what?

Most people are going to take that as a bit condescending and thus... flamebait.  If you'd leave it to the arguments rather than adding on the snide finishers (you are pretty good at 'witty' repartee), then I believe that you'd find the audience more receptive to your arguments.

From Debate Ideas and Suggestions:
6. Attack the idea not the person.
16. Smile when disagreeing.
19. Avoid bickering, quarreling, and wrangling.
20. Watch your tone of voice.
22. Keep your perspective - You're just debating.

You need to be very polite when disagreeing with someone in English, even someone you know quite well.
With someone you know very well, you can disagree more directly.

LastPass has a tool to check, but it's being made out to be a bigger deal than it apparently is.

“Since AntiSec removed all the personal data from the data they released, this hack doesn’t present much risk to end users,” said Andrew Storms, director of security operations for nCircle, a compliance auditing firm that works with companies such as Facebook and Mastercard. “UDIDs in isolation aren’t a big deal. In fact, Apple used to permit apps to spew UDIDs all over the place, so there’s a lot of UDID data already in the public domain. For awhile, there were a lot of apps using UDID and personal data to track users activity and selling it to advertisers.”

The larger question is why did the FBI have all of those UDIDs?

I'm not saying that what the SEC is planning/has done is good (especially since I haven't read any of the articles about it, so I don't really know anything about it), but I have been wondering when the first big scam from one of these crowd sourcing projects would happen.

I know it will at some point (though I'm not sure exactly what I might mean by "big").

There was an attempt to push through a scam.  However, though you can scam one person, scamming a lot of people is harder, and it was promptly shut down as the collective internet quickly figured out that it was a scam.

http://betabeat.com/...ter-scam-looks-like/

http://www.itproport...-appears---shutdown/

I think that it will be hard to perpetrate for the amount of time that a Kickstarter goes on.  You will get duds and kickstarters that fail... but I look at it more as a pre-order than an investment in any case.  I also don't back anything that's far out in terms of delivery.

So glad I don't have to buy this from Libyans in parking lots at the mall anymore. January 21, 2009
By Kyle J. Von Bose
I bought this to power a home-made submarine that I use to look for prehistoric-era life forms in land-locked lakes around my home town in Alaska. At first I wasn't sure if this item would (or could) arrive via mail, but I was glad to see it showed up with no problems. Well, almost no problems.

Unfortuantly my mom opened my mail, because she does not respect people's privacy. She was pretty upset to see Uranium Ore. After a long argument and me running away from home again, she finaly stopped being such an idiot and I was able to get back to work.

The quality of this Uranium is on par with the stuff I was bying from the Libyans over at the mall parking lot, but at half the price! I just hope the seller does not run out, because I have many projects on my list including a night vision sasquatch radar, an electromagnetic chupakabra cage, a high velocity, aerial, weighted Mothman net and super heated, instant grill cheese sandwhich maker.

This is great!  ;D  ;D

SEC uses JOBS Act to set up new roadblocks to crowdfunding

This is the problem with all of these little agencies having their say in everything.  For the first time I almost totally agree with something that us has bipartisan support... and the SEC has to stick its nose in.

*sigh*

I knew with Kickstarter and IndieGoGo getting such good results, there would be some sort of backlash...

Having said that it all seems to be handled via the US and payments for that project went through Amazon US payment system.

That's the problem that I think a lot of people have.  Amazon US payment for out of country payments is sort of sketchy.  I would guess that UK was fine... but get beyond that...

I wonder if one can make a candidate sign a contract in which if he/she does not makes good on his promises, they are automatically, and personally,  in debt for 1 million, per each incident.

Probably not legally since it would be a violation of an oath of office to sign such a contract. And it might also be illegal in that it could be viewed as a form of coercion employed against an elected official. Something which is a crime.

There's already been some discussion about US reps who have signed a public pledge (i.e. Norquest No-Tax Pledge) that they will oppose and attempt to block any new tax bills no matter what the circumstances. In a Huffington Post editorial, retired judge H. Lee Sarokin raises the issue of whether this may constitute a violation of the oath of office or a dereliction of duty on the part of the reps signing it.

Interesting question.

The large thing is that there are IMO two different things at play here:
1. Those that make promises they never intend to deliver on to get elected, and
2. Those that make promises in good faith, but can't deliver on them because of the realities of the political situation, naivete, or both.

A good example of the latter is Clinton.  He made several promises, and tried to make them happen.  He spent a lot of political capital in the pursuit of the Health Care mandate and the stance of the military in regard to LGBT servicemen.  He was able to deliver on neither of these.  But it wasn't for lack of trying- it was because of opposition and the political realities.

To penalize someone because of that seems... wrong.

Oh, I'm sorry, that used to be called Shareware except now you don't get to try it for free!

A little different from shareware in the classical sense if you stick to what apps represented to get Apple to the place that it is.  The whole thing has been a bit muddled, but the two come from different places and different thought processes.

Most shareware is meant to build something- where the concept of Apps is meant to be the latest cash in scheme.  "I'll make a .99 app and sell a million copies and retire"
