This is supposed to do it:
http://support.mozil...Turning_off_and_on_2

but it doesn't work for me

edit: when I go to the source page for the info, turns out "domain guessing" only happens after a dns failed lookup.  So that won't fix it after all.

I use a white piece of A4 paper as a mousepad, but you can spend $5.17 and have a Microsoft OEM mouse pad (which I guess would double as a dartboard ;)) delivered straight from Hong Kong thanks to the folks of DealExtreme [linky]

Hmmmmm, I wonder how many pages the EULA is on that item?

Why would a mouse require pads...is it not wide enough by itself?

In case other mice need a place to crash. :)

It's been a few years since I did grub.  Pentium III was "it" at the time I think.  Anyway, this site should have just about any info you could possibly want on boot configuration:

Sounds like MyUninstall is closest to what you want.  Maybe use some macro to run it and click View=>Html Report All Items.  One of those mouse click or keystroke recorders should do it.  You could have it overwrite the same filename for the export list.

That would seem like the easiest way.

You're still using a ball mouse?!?

Yup.  Since I use a kvma switch I only use one mouse for 2 PCs.  I save the mice and keyboards that come with the tower when I buy a new PC.  I have one backup that's exactly the same as the one I'm using (2 button with wheel) and one that's the same mechanically but the body is a bit wider.  Don't know why they did that.  I don't like it.  Anyway, it's very comfortable and the main thing is I don't have to think(ok a few punch lines aren't out of line.. after all.. Living Room / Free Mousepads?
« Last post by MilesAhead on August 15, 2009, 03:06 PM »
People on DC get around quite a bit and have been computing for a long time.  I'm curious if anyone knows of a good source to get a free mousepad sent via snail mail?  Seems like it used to be more common for these to be given out, but maybe I'm one of the few curmudgeons still using the old mechanical rubber ball mouse and everyone else is on optical.

Anyway, they come in handy.  I just got one of those BlacX USB docking ports.  It works great, but the vibration is a distraction.  I sacrificed my backup mousepad.  Sliced it to fit and put it under the base. That made me think it would be a good idea to have a few more pads hanging about for emergencies like that one!  I sent a suggestion to Thermaltake to put some vibe dampening stuff on the base.. but I was surprised rummaging around that I could find a 1.2 MB 5 1/4" floppy with a yggdrasil linux beta, but not a mousepad(other than my plain gray backup pad that is.)

I know someplace I had a small wimpy OS/2 promotional mousepad around somewhere but I couldn't find the thing!

I think I'm resistant to keyboard maximum efficiency because then I'd have to remember the accelerator keys.  I don't have to remember the mouse. That was one thing that hassled me about Linux.  It was nearly impossible to find an editor with key combos the same as Windows editors.  It just never felt natural always trying to look through XEmacs or some other editor for the editing command keys.  I realize if I did it all the time like the true Linuxen I'd learn eventually, but then it would feel like chucking all my Dos-based knowledge.

Long-winded way of saying, with the mouse I don't have to think.  Just react. :)

housetier I haven't tried the keyword search, but I like to use Context Search that uses the search engine list.  I can highlight a word or name and search a Wiki or dictionary or whatnot.  It can be set to open the result in a new tab in the background. A frequent search is IMDB or I can check spelling of words that aren't in the built-in spell check dictionary using a free online dictionary.  The generator form is cool for sites that don't have a prefabricated search plugin yet.

Of course for quick and dirty there's always the google 'site' keyword to search a particular domain.

I just ran across this Firefox 3.x search plugin generator.  It's easy to use.  I just made a search plugin for a movie review site in a few minutes:

You can also try a hotkey utility I wrote called Home Folder. You leave it run in the System Tray.  To open a command prompt in the current folder, make sure the folder window is active, then hit Control-NumberPadMinus hotkey.  Here's the link:

I liked the Add to Group Alias bit.  I have a folder with shortcuts to my editors but there's a bunch and they open up in alphabetical order.  I set up "edit" alias in FARR to stack the 6 I use most in most used order.  That avoids scrolling through the shortcuts.

Since I didn't have to read the manual I had to install ScreenShot Captor.  Looks like it's good for stuff with "circles and arra's and a paragraph on the back of each one explainin' what each one was" type of stuff. :)

To be honest, with driver signing + UAC it's a lot more work than "shorting two wires" :) - getting a *serious* malware infection (ie, rootkit and not just something you can easily kill and remove) really shouldn't happen on vista/win7 unless you're stupid and run with UAC turned off.

As opposed to being stupid and running with UAC turned on?  I don't see the correlation.  If you only have one securty guard, once he's dead, then there ain't any.  With 32 bit it's a lot more guesswork to figure out which protection software I'm running than 64 bit where I can't run any.

afa the family licensing goes, a lot of software these days is being sold with a license of the type "use on as many PCs as you own personally."  For instance Sandboxie, or DVD-Rebuilder.  Even though DVD-Rebuilder has a copy protection or activation scheme or whatever you want to call it, the developer allows 5 simultaneous installs and as the installs age, they drop off the list.  This means you don't have to send an email every time you want to install on another PC.  Effectively it just prevents 200 people installing using one email address for the activation.

I'm told back in the old days the auto insurance companies used to insure the driver.  The guy could park one car, and then drive away in another and as long as both cars were legally registered, since they guy could only drive one car at a time, he was covered.  Now they want to insure each individual car, but then insure the driver too(are you under 25? smoke?  wear pink shirts on national holidays?)  It's both ends against the middle.

I don't expect a Linux type free license but there should be some sensible licensing.  Not "by opening this package you agree to the terms you can only read by opening the package because they are printed in a booklet inside the shrink wrap."

I'm not trying to say anyone is a good guy or a bad guy.  My frustration is with MS.  The approach they have taken is like if you put a burglar alarm on your house and say that no other security system may be used or it voids the contract.  Then come to find out, if the burglar doesn't feel like guessing the password number sequence but instead smashes the plastic cover and shorts the 2 wires to get a "valid" signal sent, well then you are stuck with crappy security.  With only one protection allowed, then there's only one for the malware to circumvent.

Kind of like if everyone was forced to browse the web with only IE or FF or Opera.  Once you learn to metastasize on that one browser, the game is over.  Better to have several moving targets.

I doubt Returnil will get very far.  There was a product called Disk Write Copy that has a personal edition for @$30 with supposed 64 bit Vista support.  Funny thing is, if you go to the web site, look at their forum, all activity and updates seemed to grind to a halt just about the time Vista SP1 with PatchGuard came out. No way I would pump my $30 into that dark pit!!

To me "we will do something in the future" is what used to be called Vaporware.

I'll have the developer sign up here when he gets on his MSN account and then explain what the trial license means.

The other info I'd like is if it supports 64 bit OS?  For 32 bit XP Vista and W7 I use Sandboxie.  For 64 bit Windows currently I'm at a loss for some easy to use system protection.  I'm not a fan of Virtual Box type solutions.  If I want to surf the net with nothing going on my HD at all I'll just boot a Live Linux CD.  What I'd like is something that lets you easily save stuff you want, but keeps malware from hosing the partition table or registry etc... Sandboxie is close to ideal for me, if not for the MS 64 bit PatchGuard issue.  So the developer will not support 64 bit.  I haven't found anything else that really takes its place. I notice Returnil has no 64 bit support either.

Where is the free? The sites in the above links timed out, so I couldn't read, but the Softpedia entry shows v. 2.2 Trial download with $100 for the genuine item.

Plus there are probably a lot of guys like me who have the old CRT monitor that's still going strong.  Once you have speakers and a monitor, then you just buy the Tower/Keyboard/Mouse package. In that case you can get pretty decent horsepower for less than a grand.

Vim :) There is a syntax file for Ahk as well. I am sure you can use one of the language files for Ahk indenting.

I have to take a look at vim. When I was playing with Linux I tried vi just enough to see that it would be very powerful, once I quit ripping my hair out. :)

The PsPad developer must be a Delphi enthusiast.  They usually do ^Y.  I should have thought to try it.
