General Software Discussion / Re: Solid, command-line file encryption tool?
« Last post by Innuendo on February 25, 2012, 01:27 PM »
My Google Fu turned up this thread dealing with using WinRAR from the command line to create a separate archive for each file:

http://forums.techgu...parate-archives.html

All you would need to do is edit the provided batch file provided to tailor it to your desired encryption requirements. I don't think you can anything more mature & proven than WinRAR. The world's largest file transfer network (Usenet) depends on RAR files.

Bummer...I stand corrected. Their last BDJ deal was a license for 3 PCs and I thought they'd carry on that tradition. Still, even at $49.97 it's still quite a savings over the current deal on their web site ($69.95 for 3 PCs).

General Software Discussion / Re: No more native Flash for Linux

But I agree. Why try to duplicate Flash? The sooner we get on with HTML5/CSS3 and WebGL the better off we'll be. 8)

Oh, 40hz, I do so wonder at your naive, childlike innocence.   ;)   Microsoft, Google, and Netflix don't want us to be better off...they want DRM in HTML5. See here.

General Software Discussion / Re: ReImage: online Windows repair!
« Last post by Innuendo on February 24, 2012, 12:50 PM »
A few random points to add to the discussion -

Paragon programs are mostly junk...rebranded junk they have bought from other companies and put their new skin on. There's nothing they sell that you can't get the equivalent elsewhere for the same price or cheaper.
-
Curt, to get past your current nightmare, borrow someone's Vista disc and do an upgrade over the top of the old OS. It won't be pretty & Vista probably won't activate, but you'll have time to copy off the files you want.
-
OEM versions of Windows - You will be fine with an OEM copy. I have friends that have upgraded their PCs (including their motherboards) and Windows activated again just fine. There's especially nothing to worry about if your current install is 6+ months later than your last install with that disc. MS keeps activation data on their servers for only six months.
-
Upgrade versions of Windows - Depending on your levels of patience you may want to avoid one of these. An upgrade version will only activate if it's been used to upgrade a 'previous' version of Windows. If someone has a bare hard drive, that means that in order to get around this annoyance, they'd have to install their upgrade disc, not activate it, then reinstall Windows again as an upgrade to that 'previous' version in order to activate it. IMHO, life's too short to install Windows TWICE every time you reinstall your OS. They *may* have fixed this for Windows 7, but with Windows Vista it was the only way to use an upgrade disc on a bare hard drive.
-
Final point - Ultimately, with Windows 7 it doesn't really matter what kind of disc you have any longer (retail, upgrade, OEM, etc) as the serial dictates what type of Windows you have not the disc, as it was with previous versions of Windows.

Get yourself the OEM version of Windows x64 and enjoy life (and your savings). Once it's installed & activated your or nobody else will be able to tell a difference between it and the $400 copy you saw for sale.

Living Room / Re: Get Britain Working (But we won't pay you...)

And most of the people perpetuating this myth know better, know that the national debt is similar to debt on a business's balance sheet, an investment in the future if done properly, and money well spent.

Alas, the ratio of investments in the future done properly vs. pork-barrel spending are not always favorable. :(

Now, I can't speak for everybody...but while I have found myself unemployed for any reason, I knew full well that it was not due to me lacking the knowledge...It was actually because there are currently around 22 people applying for every job in the UK...

While I sympathize with you for your overall plight, this quoted bit makes me a bit jealous. Around these parts it's been conservatively estimated that employers receive between 100-200 applications for each job posting. :(

I've used OpenDNS for years & the OP makes me feel like I've made the right decision in sticking with them.

BitsDuJour is soon going to have an offer for Agnitum's Outpost Firewall. For your $29.97 you'll get a lifetime license for 3 PCs.

If you've been thinking about beefing up your security or just want to try something new then this warrants your attention. Agnitum's firewall consistently ranks among the highest in reviews & tests.

I know a lot of people here are a little worried when it comes to lifetime licenses & having the rug pulled out from under them, but I can assure you that Agnitum is trustworthy in this regard. I've owned a lifetime license for their security suite since early January, 2009 & I have never had a problem with my license in upgrading to the latest & greatest versions.

My sentiments exactly, except the Windows 8 part.

I'm keeping an open mind. What Windows 8 will be in its final form isn't going to emerge until we're into the beta process. That's MS's typical standard operating procedure, but I agree. At this point in time, there's no reason to upgrade. I'm confident that will most likely change.

Come on, I can't believe you were serious there.

Maybe I've lived behind Ad Muncher and other layers of spam/ad/poo removal that I'm out of touch with what goes on when the internet is unfiltered? I often hear about epic-scale virus/malware/worm/trojan months after they've happened as nothing reaches me behind my layered defenses.

I was serious, but maybe my view from my digital ivory tower is skewed. :)

Using µTorrent 1.8.2 here simply because private trackers prefer those earlier builds and it works.

And here is the link to v1.8.2 courtesy of OldApps.

Make an image of your Windows partition once a week - takes twenty minutes.  I've used Windows for close to twenty years and have never reinstalled from scratch, but images have saved my butt half a dozen times.

I install and trial a LOT of programs. If I'm going to do an OS reinstall I'm going to want to shed all of that useless junk lurking around my hard drive & registry. I don't want to carry half-uninstalled program DLLs around wtih me till I upgrade to Windows 8.

I don't see anything wrong with that email. You can't blame someone from maximizing their income in this tough economy and the email was at least polite and respectful.

If you had encountered a true 'turd' you wouldn't have received an email from them at all & instead they'd have a bot responding to every one of your blog posts with a thinly veiled sales pitch for their products.

I hate unsolicited advertising in my email as much as the next guy, but in this situation I think they took the high road.
715
Edit addition:
When I started writing this reply, almost 24 hours ago, the 30%OFF promotion had expired, but it (30%OFF) has now been renewed until February 29th, 2012, so the options to choose from are now: a 1 Year License for USD$20.93, 2 Year License for USD$7 more at $27.93, or Lifetime License options at $41.93 (Bargain )

Yeah, it looks like he has started to price his stuff the way Slysoft prices AnyDVD & the rest of their products. Jack up the regular price but run perpetual sales to make the user think he's getting a great deal.

"How to activate on Win7/Vista...."

Does this mean it phones home to activate? And what happens if your system goes ka-boom & you have to reinstall your OS? Are you out of luck if you want to reinstall your freebie?

I think the biggest problem has with Amazon is the fact that he's trying to download books he has already paid for & yet Amazon wants to authorize his card again for the purchase. There's no sane reason for them to do that.

Oh, one thing more. In the old days, new RAM sticks should be as small as possible, in order to secure fast response when text editing and other low memory level activities. Does such details have any importance with today's memory sticks? Will a 4GB RAM stick react slower when I hit say Ctrl+Shift+LeftArrow > Ctrl+C than a 2 GB RAM stick will? or than 512MB?

The speed of RAM has gotten so fast that any differences in speed between RAM module sizes are only visible in benchmarks.

I was not implying that all Linux users are whackadoos. I'm just saying the Linux mission statement attracts them in spades. :)

I respectfully suggest you look at replacing Avira with something else. It's infamous for lots of false positives and causing problems like this.

There are lots of programs (some pay & some free) that install a PDF printer driver. Just print from inside the app of your choice & the output goes to a PDF file rather than to a physical printer.

This is Cisco we're talking about here. They don't have a general "call us if you have any problems" tech support line. If your equipment has a valid support contract then you have the methods made available to you as to how to obtain support.

If you don't have a support contract you're SOL.

Linux is an OS choice driven by zealotry & wanting to stick it to The Man. These two things meld into a perfect mixture that attracts whackadoos more efficiently than sweet water attracts hummingbirds.

I'm not going to weigh in on who is worse in regards to B&N or Amazon. What I would like to do is encourage the OP to look at what's available in Android tablets before blindly buying the Kindle Fire. The Android Market has both the Nook & Kindle apps (as well as a slew of other ereader apps) and they all work on every Android tablet.
