Living Room / Re: The entitled generation....Are they right?
« Last post by nosh on April 15, 2009, 08:50 AM »
I don't begrudge them their wealth either - even when they are talentless one hit wonders. I just can't get myself to weep for them coz some kid running Bearshare (*shudder*) is ripping into their $$$.

WRT PETA
I'm not getting preachy - I've had my mother stop talking to me for weeks coz I killed a couple of chickens at my uncle's farmhouse once. Though she's not vegetarian either and I'm sure she enjoyed eating them just as much as the rest of us did.  :-\
Funny side-story: I had just cut a chicken's neck right off (n00b error) and took it to the kitchen feeling a tinge guilty. Its legs were all stretched out and stiff and I tried to straighten them out by pressing them down and bending them at the joints and the darned thing kicked back hard (one of those dead reflex things) scaring the living hell out of me!  ;D

Disproportionate, as in:

I find it ironic that it was technology (cassettes, CDs) that helped a lot of these artistes earn incomes grossly disproportionate to the effort put in and it's technology that's now responsible for taking a good chunk of it away.

Sorry for getting all philosophical and OT, but can most humans really afford to take a moral high-ground on _anything_ without coming across as total hypocrites? Most of us (yours truly included) have desensitized ourselves to the extent that we don't give a hoot about another creature getting its throat slit so we can stuff ourselves a little. Apologies once again for going all PETA on you but
"veal cow!"
These babies are put in tiny wooden stalls all by themselves.   They’re chained at the neck so they can’t turn around or move more than a step forward or backward.  All they can do is stand up and lie down.  This is done so that they don’t develop muscles so that their meat stays very tender.   Twice a day they are given some liquid food.  This food contains chemicals that will help the babies survive under these awful conditions.  Except for feeding time, they are all alone.  This is very hard on babies who are meant to be in a herd with their moms, aunts, cousins, etc.  These babies never get to play or graze or feel the sunshine of their backs or be with their mothers.  They spend their entire lives in the dark in little stalls until they’re big enough to be killed and turned into veal – usually around 16 weeks old (about 4 months).

One million baby cows are raised like this in the U.S. every year.

When the calves are old enough to be killed, they are forced to walk to trucks that will take them to the slaughterhouse.  Because they were never allowed to exercise, they have trouble walking.  People use electric prods to force them into the trucks.  When they are too weak, they are chained around the neck or one leg and dragged.

It's just a matter of time, circumstances and convenience, isn't it?

P.S. - I think this makes me a nihilist. :)

Living Room / Most Wiki'd Item? HTTP 404
« Last post by nosh on April 04, 2009, 12:12 AM »
You have to be a geek (and easily amused?  ;D ) to find something like this hilarious - Nearly 4 million people Wiki'd "HTTP 404" in the last 30 days.  That's more hits than The Beatles or Watchmen.

I like to think I have a stable system even though it BSOD's on me once in a while.

There's one that occurs at boot - something to do for a "the system encountering a wait or yield procedure" (if memory serves right), it's been narrowed down to Acronis and it's something I can live with since I reboot very infrequently and never lose data to it. I just restart and wait for the console text to go blood red... a good sign, since it invariable bypasses the BSOD then.

I've got them on every occasion I've tried the DC traffic analysis utility - something to do with the winpcap(?) driver, not blaming the DC utility. :P

And I got me last one when I tried one of the ramdrive apps recommended in the "make FF load faster" thread.

The rare ones that occur when I haven't installed anything new are almost always due to overheating. These I hate, coz it means I have to get off my ass and disconnect everything, lug the PC to an open space and go to work on it with a blower, lug it back, reconnect... ugh! It's so much simpler just clicking uninstall.  :)

Living Room / Re: Conficker - The Facts
« Last post by nosh on March 31, 2009, 02:13 AM »
From the Windows Secrets article linked above by PhilB66

Admins of small and large LANs can use OpenDNS as a Domain Name System server.
The firm introduced on Feb. 9 a new, Conficker-specific feature. If an infected PC on a LAN somehow evaded detection, OpenDNS will prevent it from contacting Conficker's control servers. Best of all, admins can read a report showing which PC tried to connect to a Conficker server.

It's nice to have a proactive DNS provider! :)

Edit: Direct link to the standalone ESET Conficker Removal tool. Just 119 KB and it tells you immediately if Conficker is found in memory.

Works well inside threads, ewemoa. I couldn't get it working for topic listings though.

I've modified if slightly to show different colors for

1-3 weeks
3 weeks to 2 months
over 2 months.

It'll stop me from replying without thinking to somewhat older posts.

Just a heads-up.

I sometimes get this warning on clicking a DC forum link in Google's search results using Firefox.
Clipboard01.png

Google URL when this happened today.

If this isn't isolated and happens to others it might be pretty off-putting to someone who hasn't heard of the site.

I've chosen to "add an exception" on prior occasions but I noticed today that the exception url that pops up is very thread+message specific, so it doesn't really help in the future.

Yep, Foobar is completely flexible with stuff like that. It's only a matter of how much time and effort you want to put into tagging your music once you have the player & components set up right. Applying genre + tempo + rating tags & making autoplaylists based on these three seems to do the trick for me.

A program = a set of instructions, an application = the end result

which fits in somewhat with mouser's explanation, which is more realistic/practical.

In general, x determines whether a software is an application or a program

if (lines of code * programmer's ego) > x
software = application
else
software = program.

How many "necro-spams" has the forum received lately? Any kind of hindrance to usability would be an over-reaction, IMO.

feeddemon3.png

This just popped up in FeedDemon as I read this thread...

The upcoming FeedDemon 3.0 release will even have Google Reader synchronization meaning that you can don’t have to switch but can use both the services simultaneously. Any changes (like subscribing to new feeds, marking items as read, etc.) that you make in FeedDemon will be made available in Google Reader and vice-versa.

And it’s not just about synching feeds. Some of the native Google Reader features like sharing with notes and keyboard shortcuts are also expected in FeedDemon 3, the first beta of which is expected next week according to this tweet from Nick.

P.S. Josh's little 'bug thing' is pure evil. Every so often I forget and try to squash it. (Yee-hah! Go Josh!   )

That thing had me convinced once that it had managed to crawl inside the LCD, coz cleaning it with a cloth didn't work! :D

General Software Discussion / Re: Is 'TK8 Backup Professional' recommendable?
« Last post by nosh on March 23, 2009, 04:38 AM »
TK8 gets a big  from me. I just tried it out of curiosity and the first thing it does is give me stupid messages like:

untitled.jpg   untitled2.jpg

Would you trust a backup program that gets thrown by a different date format?

Also I couldn't find any obvious way to backup parts of the registry (I suspect there isn't any, a search for 'registry' in the help file got me zilch). This is a big downside for me.

Deciding between a novice program like TK8 and a tried and tested app like Genie, for something as critical as backup, is a no-brainer.

<rant> I have nothing against .NET stuff per se, I'm trying to pick some C# up myself - but a good portion of the .NET based apps I have tried so far are quite disappointing. I hate the flickery controls that give the impression that all the GUI elements are tied together by bits of rubber-band and a lot of these programs throw exceptions in my face, which from an end user's POV, sucks! Hopefully, this is just sub-standard code (like I hope to churn out someday. 8) ). </rant>
