I am not sure now but I've thought K-M can handle some of Firefox extensions.

You've answered while I was editing :)

Try it with K-Meleon. It will have different icon.

There is something I haven't tried yet:
https://addons.mozil...S/firefox/addon/3235

It might be slow but I wonder how slow with K-Meleon (if works with it at all).

Looks like your mind follows mine with few days delay ;)

I was testing couple CHM readers last week and sadly said: only xchm stayed on my disk. It had problems with opening some CHM files but it does not require strange libraries (i.e. full python installation) and works on Windows. Unfortunately, there are only few viewers for Windows only. The rest are those for other operating systems or "multi-platform" which means: install "crap" you don't really need (Python, Java, GTK+, Qt) for anything else.

Isn't it the same what I've adviced?

If I am right you can time in full TXT file path (i.e. c:\test.txt).

Other solution is to use AHK.

With its Ahk2Exe tool you can compile simple script and choose your icon for it.

So if you want hardcoded solution then write your own script:

Run "ala\difres.exe"

PS. I wonder how mentioned BAT compiler works. I think I can be 90% sure that on startup it simply decompiles BAT file into TEMP and runs it from there.
708
2superboyac

What about using BAT files without compiling them?

You could write in them something like (for DifRes.exe application in "ala" path):

start "" "%~dp0ala\DifRes.exe"

This way CMD window will disappear automatically. %~dp0 is always replaced with the path to BAT file.

I'll be more interested to see how Firefox and Chrome are doing when that old

They will be nice operating systems without decent browsers :p

Sorry but I can't find it. I've checked most of the links from my Miranda archive without success. When I lost conversations from few days because of crash I thought nothing important was there. I was wrong :(

I think I saw once an application which could help you (partially at least). It was text editor (of course) with the possiblity to use diffrerent syntax highlight schemes for different parts of the text. It was possible to have i.e. first 10 lines coloured as HTML and other 20 as C++. With such functionality and own schemes it could be helpful.

I will try to recall its name but my memory has few holes ;)

I think they are listening to the users but to the wrong ones. I've called that: "We are for experts only" policy.

It is stupid somehow because I have the feeling they are thinking that this way Opera will be more popular. It's very far from true IMHO. They will be unknown as long as they don't admit that stupid* users can use their tool.

*) Sorry for everyone for such term but majority of users don't know (or don't want to) "IT stuff". It's like Apple would start complaining that poor people don't understand their greatness ;)

I've never used that but I wonder about:
10. Fill forms & passwords
With the Wand, you never have to retype your information.
-15 reasons to use Opera

I've been using Opera AFAIR and I must, sadly, agree with you. Maybe it's the best browser in the world but the most hostile too. There are dozen of features which are so hard to do even for advanced users that it is ridiculous. For an example: you can customize your menus any way you like BUT you need to dig into strange INI files. It's too much for me. I know how to do it but it has always been to much trouble and I was skipping such work any time.
Same goes for Opera Link. It is nice but, for God's sake, there is no simple Wizard to make it right and choose priorities of synchronisation. Of course you can type opera:config into your address bar and rely on nowhere described variable but who knows about it? It took me hours (seriously) to find out how to do it the way I want. After loosing 500 links I've decided to never use this functionality again.

And they really thought that widgets will be good enough to replace the lack of extensions. This is just a joke.

I wrote it once and will do again: they will have 1% until the end ;)

I admire their developers but management and marketing skills: both are crap. They had a chance to do something with popularity and they never decided to go for it because of "We are for experts only" policy. The only thing which left for them is to complain to EU. Mozilla did great work to fill the hole in market for average users. Opera never understood that there are more n00bs than pros.

Aaargh! I think I've made mistake!

I've just checked and see that for "Generic / Text only" I have "FILE" as chosen port. It is strange because I am sure I had LPT1 taken first.

For each virtual printer I've got I have chosen "LPT1 (recommended)" and "FILE:" somewhere in the middle IIRC. That's all from my side BUT I have no real printer so that might be the source of the problems in your case.

BTW I've wanted to make Flash movie for you but decided not to do so because any dialogues would be in Polish ;) I can still make it IF you really want to but after some sleep.

Very nice review but I wonder does any of them have my dream-like functionality: live filter with column mode
-fenixproductions (April 27, 2009, 05:24 PM)

I don't think so. I agree it would be very useful. Have you found it anywhere else?
No. That is why I've asked.

Copying "visible lines" could be not so bad but will importing them back not "break" the rest of the file? If I had to choose I would rather stay with regexp instead.

2xtabber
I'll check their demo version to know is it what I want but I doubt I will use it after that. It would not be wise to buy this application only because of that functionality IMHO. Other free editors suit my needs pretty well.

TC did not start to be called differently. TC UP is still TC but with additional tools and plugins. You could have the same package done by yourself if you want to :)

Ultima took his own configuration and decided to share it with other people (with Ghisler's agreement of course).

It's hard to believe but is having so many windows* opened really comfortable? I know I have 1280x1024 resolution only but even when I've got two panels, it sometimes gives me the feeling of not enough space. Cluttering it more could decrease readability.

For me DC is definitely slower on files listing and coping. There is no thumbnails view, background transfer and QuickView yet. The rest are the things which are small but annoying for me.

To name a few:
- configuration dialog is about 1000x800px but in most of cases even half of it is not used;
- no ellipsis for files names if they are too long;
- many dialogues are wasting the space (i.e. Change button bar);
- in TC mouse's wheel scrolls entire panel, in DC - focused line is changed only;

There is no point in listing all of these. It is a fresh project after all and many things will change. I hope it will get better from UI side because for now it looks immature.

Nice list and I must say: I've tried almost all of them.

Even if I am TC fanatic there was a time I had to use an alternative. There was no TC licences in my previous work and Explorer was to much to handle so... I had to try. After a long time of testing I found out only two file managers good for me there: Free Commander and Unreal Commander. Unfortunately: back these days FC had no FTP support and problems with getting extension in separate column only was pissing me off. That way UC was a winner. With TC's plugins support and nice idea of "copy status bar" it was great for use on daily basis.

So... since then UC is the only app I can honestly recommend for keyboard users as free alternative (although for mouse: Ultra Explorer is the best IMHO). But that is only (and if only) if you don't want to spend your money. In other case go either for TC or Directory Opus :)

I think DoubleCommander might have a good feature because of multi-platform support (at least it's better to have on Linux than Krusader). Unfortunately, for now it's too early to consider it as decent replacement for other ones mentioned already. It's just too early.

On the other hand, I know that that kind of software does not need to be good looking but, for God's sake, why DC looks so strange? Seriously, why is it wasting so much space by giving overgrown controls? It has potential so, please, do not scare people out ;)
