I will post a link here to see if that is 'shortened', and if the problem is just links in quoted text:

The link is shortened, but is still wider than the screen.
EDIT//
and is quoted shortened, but again, still wider than the screen.

« Last post by tomos on July 12, 2018, 03:20 AM »
DC looks good in portrait mode on a smartphone screen:
wp_ss_20180712_0004.png
In landscape mode though, the advantage of the wider screen is negated by the amount of space taken to display the user info:
Screenshot_20180712-094400.png
On my older lower res phone, the user avatar didn't show in landscape mode, so I presume the threshold could be adjusted to cater to higher res small screens?

Second point:
you can see in the first shot that the quoted text is wider than the screen. This is because of a url.
=> Wondering could a line be allowed to break at a "/"
If so, would allow longer urls to wrap. Or that the url be shortened to page width by just showing dots in the mid...dle of the url?

I will post a link here to see if that is 'shortened', and if the problem is just links in quoted text:

Windows 7 machine:
I accidentally applied all windows updates around the end of May. Since then having troubles sometime after startup -- a total sieze-up of the system -- unable to do anything for a while -- maybe ten minutes, maybe twenty :-/
When the system recovers, anything you attempted to do in the 'freeze-time' gets done, and fast: at this stage today, the taskmanager (Process Explorer actually) got opened and I saw a flash of compattelrunner highlighted in red before it disappeared.

Did the following:
To disable Windows Compatibility Telemetry, kindly follow these steps:

On the search box, type services and press Enter to open the Services desktop app.
Stop the Diagnostics Tracking Service and change the Startup Type to Disabled.
also uninstalled KB2952664 "Compatibility update for keeping Windows up-to-date in Windows 7" as suggested in Superuser:
https://superuser.co...-boot-for-20-minutes

System is fine on reboot: will report if there's any other problems.

This all happened in the wake of replacing a harddrive which was also causing the system to sieze up (I'm even wondering now was the HDD really on the way out: but I think so). All of which made me suspect the new HDD rather than look for other possibilities...

25 Phrases Americans Say That Other Countries Don't Understand

True?
I wonder if all of these originated in the States:
unfortunately they often dont give info about the origins of the phrases.

Growing up in Ireland in the 70s and 80s, I would have known (or gotten to know at least by the 90s) the following ones:
  • ‘Quitting Cold Turkey’
  • ‘Take a Raincheck’ -- think I only got to know this one in the later 80s
  • ‘Spill the Beans’
  • ‘Riding Shotgun’ -- the origin of this unfortunately not properly explained: I know the term well, not sure when it reached .ie
  • ‘Piece of Cake’
  • ‘More Bang for Your Buck’
  • ‘Let’s Go Dutch’
  • ‘Jump on the Bandwagon’
  • ‘Jonesing’ (1990's for me)
  • ‘For the Birds’
  • ‘Flake’ (late 80s to 90s for me)

I don't know about the G6 but there is also another way to fast start the camera app, Settings->Display->Press power button twice for camera - unfortunately no good if you've got it locked with a PIN or Pattern, it'll ask you for it.
unfortunately that's not shown as an option for me here:
was wondering if options would change if I removed the PIN, but it then says it will delete my saved fingerprints. Odd. (Not looking for help there: will mess around with that when I have a bit of time).

I like the G6 a lot. Haven't yet used it much, and am still in that phase of: I've been using a different OS for 2.5 years and only notice the things that are worse in this one.
But I have decided to keep the phone and am happy about the decision. I know that Android has the advantage (over Windows phones) that there are a lot of options in terms of apps and possibilities.

Here a shot I was happy with:

IMG_20180628_211826148_HDR.jpg

I see it's HDR -- been messing around with settings so not sure what's on or off...

[Moto G6]
A double twist of the wrist opens the camera app, even if the phone is locked, very quick, the app is running by the time I hold it up for a photo.
I had figured that out -- but not this:
Doing it while the camera is running will also swap between the front/rear camera.
it's not ideal for my wrist (have problems with both after years of drawing with a mouse), but doable for those occasional important moments.

I'm still undecided about the phone -- it is a lovely phone. Will have more time Friday to test it. Football is very distracting at the moment ;)

For screen shots of just browser windows, like Chrome,  the NIMBUS screenshot does an excellent job of capturing those web-pages, where parts of the page are missing, WHEN you try and do a simple windows "Print-Screen". It also does an excellent job of also being able to capture an entire webpage, when a webpage is several pages long
-disenchanted (June 26, 2018, 09:32 AM)
Curious:
# how do you mean "where parts of the page are missing" ? Do you mean they off-screen i.e. need scrolling?
# have you tried Screenshot Captor (SC) for scrolling capture? Can you compare?

General Software Discussion / Re: Autodesk Sketchbook is now free

The sketchbook.com site shows a promotional video which actually has very little to do with Autodesk:
it's a very inspirational video, featuring Jay Shuster (imdb link), a designer who worked on Star Wars: Episodes I & II, Cars 2 & 3 etc etc. Also a fascinating story of a boy's introverted obsessions with mechanics and design -- and 'kit bashing' (making models from multiple kits), and how these evolve into a rewarding career.

Well,
I was hoping this would make 'old timer' status which is 30 years old here (you get some benefits: less tax mainly I think). Unfortunately it didnt make it: the motor was still good, but there were too many other problems that couldnt be fixed. Last resting place (destined to be, eh, taken apart, and sold as parts).

Moto G series are not known for good cameras. Where did you read that the G series are good camera? Would be very cool if G6 has changed that but I have owned a few (G5 and older) and camera is probably the biggest weakness, if anything.

dont know anything about the series, but the G6 camera seems to get good reviews,
e.g. https://www.youtube..../watch?v=yQ6pQdbQ80Y
I actually based my decision on a German language review:
https://www.tariftip...Moto-G6-im-Test.html

One has to remember that 'good' here will always be relative i.e. good for the price...

Finally got the Moto g6.
Set it up with my google account (android takes a bit of getting used to after a few years with windows phone).
Camera much better than my Nokia 730, but cant cope with macro / very close-up shots - something the Nokia did beautifully. Also camera not quickly accessible, something I really should have considered in advance. (Good camera is main reason I chose the Moto.) Haven't spent much time with it yet, and most of that just setting it up.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Allow display of file size
« Last post by tomos on June 23, 2018, 04:42 PM »
This is a long shot, but you could get a copy of Directory Opus, configure it so that it takes over the function of Windows Explorer and make files show their exact byte size that way.
FWIW reading filesizes is slow though, so I dont have it set up by default in Dopus (I use a hotkey for it).
722
I like the red-brown FWIW. Piece looks great
But yeah, maybe a similar colour to the darker squares in the floor would be nice too.

Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR vs LISTARY
« Last post by tomos on June 22, 2018, 06:14 AM »
I use both FARR and Listary -- but both in a very basic manner so was slow to post here. (Listary had problems in the past interfacing with Dopus, so I disabled a lot of features / shortcuts. I know it got updated but I never did get to getting-to-know it better after that. FARR I had first.)

FWIW will describe:

FARR I use to
  • launch exe's
  • search most recent files (with a plugin)
  • as a calculator (again a plugin -- it saves all calculations when return is pressed)
You can bump an entry towards the top of the list -- or remove an entry from list.
It can save recently ran exe's towards the top of the list.
I can easily add keyword for an app e.g. FF for Firefox etc.

Listary I use mainly in open/save dialogues
favourite folders / most recent folders / but also if I focus in the file manager and AltTab to open/save dialogue, the dialogue will show the location shown in file manager (not sure if that's what you're describing above with Ctrl+Q).

I've learned a bit about Listary from your posts. Re FARR, I would recommend looking at the FARR forum board to get an idea of how it can be used. Seems to me it can be used to do almost anything :-) but does have a different approach & focus to Listary.

Mouser have you FARR videos?
Re videos: I was looking for videos for SC or CHS lately and couldnt find them either -- could you add links to the relevant software pages?

I was aware that the registration was probably attached to the Machine ID but not that it was attached to the HDD ID also. That could be a good reason for NOT using AOMEI Backupper Pro.
I'm presuming this is only the case for the free version :-\ unfortunately Aomei hasn't clarified this (unless they did since my last post).
EDIT//
I see Aomei did comment (only once but on the topic of lifetime licenses) and didn't clarify, so i guess one would have to work on the presumption that tied-to-machine is also true for the paid version.
Tied-to-HDD seems extreme :-/ I wonder where they got that info.
725
Once the Free AOMEI Backupper Pro v4.1 was downloaded, I couldn't figure out - HOW THE HECK DO YOU REGISTER using the key sent separately via email?
Others had asked this Q in the discussion thread at BDJ, but there seemed to be no answer as yet.

At the time of installation of this latest version, my installation does not ask for a key or anything. It just works.
The installer removed an earlier Pro version that I had and asked if I would like to keep the key, or something, so I said "Yes".
I wonder - is that how it "registered" - i.e., automatically using the old key?
the offer continues today.
I got the free/Pro version -- but downloaded the software (trial version) directly from their site, and added the key to that successfully.
It sounds like yours is registered, but hard to know...
