N.A.N.Y. 2021 / Re: N.A.N.Y. 2021: RaptureReplica by KodeZwerg

Looks interesting. I suggest you correct the spelling of "Rapture" otherwise the title is going to get the wrong kind of attention.

And also near the top of the first post could use a short description of what it is used for, so you don't have to go hunt down the original thread to find out what it is.

It's a very nice idea, but did you guys have any luck testing it on real hardware? I didn't :/
-ConstanceJill (August 24, 2020, 11:28 AM)

Yes. I've already used it on a really old 8GB thumb drive and booted into a Linux Mint ISO a couple of times from it.

The Doors:

And here I was worried that I was getting old and didn't know the reference to a new popular song. ;D

Thanks for enlightening me, and making me feel young again.

To be honest, Panzer saves me time looking for software that peeks my interest. Whether Panzer uses this software is of much lesser concern to me.

Viewing the suggestions and (if interested) the links is enough for me.

Okay. I don't want to be the one bad apple who spoils it for the rest of the bunch.

This thread seemed dominated by post after post by panzer with almost no feedback from other forum members so I assumed nobody was finding panzer's posts useful or desirable.

An aside: It would be nice if posts had a +1, thumbs up, or "like" feature, so that people who appreciate what others share but don't have anything to add to the conversation could signal their approval/appreciation.

Too Cute!

I get that it's an "otter slide" ("other side") but what are the words referring to? A song?

I just discovered Ventoy, which is free, open source (GPL 3.0) software you install on a USB drive to make it bootable. What makes it special is that it also acts like a normal USB storage drive, and you can just copy any multitude of ISOs onto it. When you boot it up it shows a menu where you can choose which ISO to finish booting into. It's like a bootloader for ISOs.

In other words, you can place your bootable Linux ISOs, Windows installation ISOs, etc., all on a single USB drive (assuming it has space for all of them) with no need to reformat or reflash the drive each time you want to change or update ISOs!

Here's a video showing it off:

Main website: https://www.ventoy.net/
Github repo: https://github.com/ventoy/Ventoy

I think the point of this thread is to share less-known software that you personally use and recommend.

What's the use in sharing a bunch of links endorsing software you don't use while repeating their claims as if they were your own?

Easier to use and more secure than any VPN:

Can you back up this statement with proof? Do you use this VPN?

For contrast, I've been using the 2004 update for a month or so and haven't had problems with it.

Sorry to those who are having problems. :(

Non-Windows Software / Re: Random Android apps getting installed
« Last post by Deozaan on August 17, 2020, 11:33 PM »
If it's Verizon branded, does this help?

Actually, even if it isn't Verizon branded, you can try disabling the Mobile Services Manager.

Yes, it is Verizon branded. I see I have Mobile Services Manager disabled already, but I can't remember if I disabled it before or after the last time I had random apps show up.

Thanks for the information. Hopefully this is the end of random apps showing up on this device, but I'll definitely be keeping my eye out for further misbehavior.

Non-Windows Software / Re: Random Android apps getting installed

Is one of the apps that you do have installed installing them?

I've gone through all the apps and uninstalled or disabled everything I can that I didn't specifically ask to install or don't use. I'm certain it's nothing that I've put on the device because I've used all these same apps on other Android devices and don't get mystery installs happening on those devices.

I'm just unsure if it's some built-in Motorola software/OS customization that the vendor has hidden from me or if it's a rootkit/malware.

Actually, in either case, this behavior should be considered malware even if it was intentionally put there by the device manufacturer.

I suppose I may have to just manually download and flash the official ROM or some custom firmware to eliminate a potential rootkit.

Non-Windows Software / Re: Random Android apps getting installed
« Last post by Deozaan on August 17, 2020, 04:12 PM »
My Samsung Android phone has certain apps that I simply cannot delete or stop from upgrading.  Very annoying.

This is not the same thing. This is apps that aren't there one day, and then suddenly appear the next. And I can easily uninstall them as normal. It's just that they (or others) come back again after a while.

Non-Windows Software / Random Android apps getting installed
« Last post by Deozaan on August 17, 2020, 01:50 PM »
Hi folks,

I recently got a hand-me-down Android device which I performed a factory reset on and then set it up how I like it.

But I've been noticing every once in a while that there are new apps installed that I never installed. Sometimes they're games, sometimes they are non-game apps. Usually they are things I've never heard of, but I've seen a few popular apps such as TikTok. In any case, they're always crap I'd never install.

I don't know if this is a "feature" like how Windows 10 will put new things in the Start menu every so often, or the perhaps more likely scenario that this device has some kind of rootkit malware on it that allows it to install apps without my permission and can survive a factory reset.

The previous owner of the device was not very tech savvy and it wouldn't surprise me if she had installed some malicious app disguised as a game from the Google Play Store which set this behavior in motion.

But I also haven't had a new Android device since 2013 so I'm not sure if this is intended device vendor behavior.

The device is a Motorola Moto Z2.

Any useful suggestions or solutions on how to stop this behavior would be appreciated.

DC Website Help and Extras / Re: Testing new DC discord chat server

It looks like we are going to be moving our official chat system from irc to discord.

I haven't really been in the DC IRC channel for quite some time, but I almost always have Discord running, so I'm OK with this decision.

Just from looking at it, I think the face hugger is just ornamental, and there's a mask underneath that it's attached to from where the elastic attaches.  I could be wrong.  If I'm not, I don't get it either.

It just looks too tightly coupled to the face (no pun intended, but I'll take it!) compared to a "normal" mask to allow for relatively comfortable breathing. And the face hugger itself doesn't appear to be made of an air-permeable material.
718
I've heard people complain that wearing masks makes it hard to breathe, but how the smurf are you supposed to breathe in that thing? :o
719
I don't have any problems with it

I see. I misunderstood you. I thought you meant the move from Google Play Music over to YouTube Music solved those problems, not that YouTube Music had those problems but now they have been resolved.
720
I never used the playlist feature so I can't say whether or not losing a playlist was a problem I experienced. But I uploaded a ton of my collection to Play Music, so I'm not sure what prevented you from doing so.
721
I may have exaggerated somewhat. What I mean is, it doesn't seem any better in any way, but it does seem worse in some ways. So feature parity appears to be either as good as or worse than Play Music. Here are a few ways in which it is worse.

  • The Music store on Google Play will go away. It won’t be possible to purchase music on Google Play anymore, and all pre-orders will be canceled.
  • With Google Play Music going away, you won’t be able to listen to podcasts there anymore.
  • Background play is only available to paid users of YouTube Music.
722
Add another corpse to the Google Graveyard.

Google is killing Google Play Music in order to promote YouTube Music.

The change appears to be a downgrade in every way, so I'm taking it as the final kick in the rear I needed to move away from yet another Google service.

Factorio 1.0 has just released! I think I'm about to lose another 30-80 hours of my life... :o :D

You can get it from Steam, GOG, or directly from the developers.
