Isn't it just something that has slipped through the net. The page/book can't be available now, surely?

that serial rapist bit was classic. i knew i hated apple; and now, after reading Renegade's rant, i'm glad i can hate them even more.

Renegade, you should do a blog just ranting about Apple, if nothing else. I'm sure it would be a big hit. i'd love it.
703
Excellent. I'm glad to say that everything is back to normal, i.e. NOT WORKING.

My connection is unable to resolve HITC again. I find it comforting that I can rely on this consistent level of crapness.
704
Yeah, I think I'll just put this down to one of those mysteries of being online. I'm just glad it works 99.9% of the time. I'm STILL amazed that the internet even exists. It's all magic to me.

As for asking TalkTalk what the problem was - they still haven't managed to deliver the router to a friend I know that signed up about 2 months ago. If they have no idea where their routers are going I don't think they'll care where other things are getting lost :-)
705
Well. Hooray for that...

without doing anything at all, I am now able to connect to the Head in the Clouds server once more.

Seems the world wide web weather has stopped blowing my little boat away from the shores of the HITC island.

General Software Discussion / Re: Slash your windows boot time
« Last post by nudone on November 02, 2010, 03:25 AM »
I've found that booting up quicker it just a case of delaying a few obvious programs. I gave Soluto a try and then replaced it for Startup Delayer: http://www.r2.com.au...&show=startdelay

Simply delaying/staggering a few temperamental programs made the start up process a lot more reliable and smoother (I used to have problems with Digsby, Networx, File Hamster and probably a few others).

Startup Delayer will show you the queue of your delayed programs as they ready to start; allowing you to skip completely, start immediately or even pause their startup.

p.s.
I even use it for starting up Firefox (minimised) so when I sit down at my computer each morning Firefox is waiting for me (I hate how long FF takes to open compared with IE). Startup Delayer also has a very nice gui, I think.

Living Room / Re: Axsotic 3D Spherical "Mouse" Ball

Seem interesting. But, Would it really accelerate the workflow compared to a trackball?

i think it would, how much is hard to say without trying it. if you think of what is required without it. a trackball isn't going to allow you to move in the x/y/z planes - not even if you assign those movement to the trackball buttons instead of the regular "mouse" button clicks. well, you could but you'll need 6 buttons on the trackball to get the same results as the Axsotic is providing, a button for each movement: up, down, left, right, forwards, backwards. perhaps you could have 3 buttons and a toggle to reverse their direction.

so, you see, it starts to get cumbersome - and i don't even know if there are any 6 button trackballs out there (i doubt that there are).

again, this device is of no real benefit if you aren't wanting to use a pen at the same time as controlling movements around a 3d object. it's all about trying to keep the workflow smooth.

i do see the whole idea falling short of the target when you consider how much keyboard/hotkey shortcuts are probably going to be required whilst drawing - that's going to interrupt the workflow; so kind of defeats the whole keep your hand on the pen and ball idea.

programs like Maya do have clever radial shortuct menus (a bit like Circledock) that are only a click away so they'd be perfect for the Axsotic workflow.

if you aren't using a pen at the same time as this new device there's no point to it. it's only a benefit for 3d artists/designers that will benefit from freeing up their keyboard hand for moving around in the x/y/z planes. in that respect i can see it being quite handy.

(for 3d games, can't see the point at all. but that's isn't the intended market.)

Living Room / Re: Can I use a remote pc's static ip because I haven't got one?

You do realize that the Windows native Remote Desktop Protocol uses very little bandwidth when configured properly, right?

Does it. That's the way I'll have to do it then. I was thinking of my experiences with VNC and expecting it to be a bit sluggish.

Thanks for the tip.

At the moment it still sounds like I'll be going the path of using a remote machine that has a static IP.

The people that control the database think it is a simple enough request for me to have a static IP (they were surprised I didn't already have one). I'll have to see if they are friendlier in the flesh than the terse emails I've had so far - maybe face-to-face it will be easy to make suggestions to them.

Thanks very much guys. The surfbouncer monthly static IP subscription is something I hoped would be out there somewhere (my own googling failed me); not sure about the cost involved, though, as changing my ISP would work out about nearly the same.

I'll have to look into the AnalogX Proxy and the router's abilities at the remote machine end. I didn't realise routers could do all that (if I'm lucky).

At the moment, it's still difficult to know how much energy to put into solving the problem. They require me to access their database but how often is the question. If they can cope with their workload then I'll never be called upon to help - which I hope explains my reluctance to start paying for a static IP service that I might only use for a few hours a year.

Sorry, I don't know yet. I'm going to meet with them next week for a training session on their system. I'll try and find out what I can before then. One problem is having to liaise through someone else - I'm just the person that will following orders and probably will be kept in the dark about most things.

Not sure if I made this clear in my original post but my idea was something similar to this...

My PC connects to a collegue's PC several miles away via a remote desktop connection.

The remote PC (several miles away) is using a static IP.

Via the remote desktop connection, I use the remote PC to connect to the database (at another location).

The database machine just thinks I'm controlling it at the remote PC (with static IP).

Not sure, Josh. I'd thought about it but it's the people at the other end that are demanding I have a static IP. I'm not sure but I assumed they wanted it for security reasons. Maybe I've missunderstood the importance of the IP requirement.

I'll have to find out but I think their answer will remain the same - it was the only requirement they made of me.

Okay, I *feel* this can be done - but I'm wondering if I can avoid using a remote desktop (that's the obvious method, to me, at least).

The scenario:

My ISP (TalkTalk in the UK) doesn't provide a static IP. I'd have to migrate to their Business Broadband, which will cost me about double my current monthly charge and the only thing I'll gain is a static IP.

I could jump ship and sign up to another ISP. That will also mean paying more than I do now, plus I'll have the stress and worry of transferring to another provider - who I may then find doesn't provide good service.

All I need is a static IP - or access to someone else's static IP via a remote connection maybe. Perhaps this is a rubbish idea and there's a much better way.

The requirement is that I need to access a database on someones server and they will only allow me to do so if I have a static IP. This is related to potential future work for me - so, I need to make the effort to get the new IP but I'd really like to keep it cost effective too.

A remote desktop would work, but it seems a bit clumsy to me; because I'd also have to allow for the bandwidth of the remote desktop display coming to me - I've only got a 1 meg line so it's not ideal for such things.

So, is there a way I can connect to the remote PC, use its static IP (well, the IP of the router at the location) but avoid using a remote desktop.

I suppose the idea is like using a proxy - but it's one that will provide me with the very same static IP every time I need to access the specific database/server.

Thanks.

there is a small ahk script/util that will do this - "Dialogmove", it's just one of the things i use it for. here's the original forum thread that got it created:

https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=3097.0

you will need the version 2 file that works with multi-monitors, available here:
https://www.donation....msg202897#msg202897

or, a pay-for-program that would also do what you need is Actual Window Manager:
http://www.actualtoo...s.com/windowmanager/
(which i also use because of my multi-monitor setup but i don't use it for moving small dialog windows around.)

Good idea. Experiencing these kinds of connection problems is not unlike banging your head against a brick wall. The plank of wood will definitely feel more pleasurable in contrast.

App, I can understand why and how you'd feel this way. Because of that, I'd just say how brilliant the future will be: time to find something new, time to surprise yourself, time to not even care about how many years have past with programming. Programming will seem fun again - one day. Don't feel bad about it - the only negative thing it has done is delay whatever fantastic thing you'll get into now instead.
719
I think it's time to get out the incense and candles and I'll start praying to the god of the internet. One day, I know that this connection will work again - I just have to remain faithful and believe the Internet God will show mercy. Join withe me and let's pray together...

Try pinging the site (www.head-in-the-clouds.com) ... Now reguardless of if/how it answers if the IP resolve to 98.131.45.219, stop looking at DNS because its job is done. :)

hmm, never thought of that. yes. when i ping the domain it does resolve to that IP. so, i guess, we rule out DNS it seems.
721
Router log doesn't show anything other than Admin logins, so nothing helpful there. I've tried changing the MTU to 1500 and 1400, no improvement there either.

I'm going to try swapping over the router later today. That way I can eliminate the current router completely and I don't need to factory reset it. If the other router allows the connection to work, then I'll reset the dodgy router.
722
Can you configure the DNS in the router?

Yes, that's using the router dns settings. I haven't changed anything on any of the computers connected to the router, i.e. the computers don't have any specific dns settings.

I suppose I really will have to try another router. I was just trying to avoid that because of all the faffing about that'll be involved.
723
Doesn't work for me, Carol. As mentioned before, using Google DNS or Open DNS settings didn't make any difference (my default dns is google's). I've just had another go after trying the above ipconfig commands again - problem remains.

I'll see what my ISP has to say, TalkTalk. I imagine that it will be a waste of time doing so.

Living Room / Re: tc1100 tablet pc dies before i've even set it up
« Last post by nudone on October 11, 2010, 11:29 AM »
I'm still getting used to the Motion LE1700, searching through forums for tips related to the machine, and gradually coming to the conclusion it's a pretty decent device.

It's clear I'm just one of many that have trod the same path trying to find a "nice" digital drawing computer set up.

Lots of artists (working professionally in animation/illustration/movies/etc) have been very disappointed with Wacom tablets AND Wacom Cintiqs. So, I feel better than I'm not demanding too much from these tablets; they really are a lot crapper than they should be - more experienced people than me say so.

The path tends to be wacom tablet -> wacom cintiq -> motion LE1700. With the final conclusion that the LE1700 is closer to a traditional drawing experience (the portability and feel of the device also can't be ignored).

As usual, the machine isn't perfect and there are tweaks to apply before getting the most out of it (which I've yet to do).

What has prompted me to post today is that it seems I paid too much for my LE1700. It was £750 on eBay; which I thought was a bargain at the time. I've now seen them for £500 on there...

BUT, this is, probably, more interesting to those of you considering buying a second-user tablet: the LE1600 is even cheaper (obviously because it's less powerful and older). I've seen quite a few on eBay for around $200. And the LE1600 isn't much different to the LE1700 really, not for common tasks. I've seen a clip on youtube that even demonstrates that the LE1600 has a brighter screen with better viewing angles than the LE1700.

I honestly feel like I've made the wrong decision every step of the way purchasing all these tablets.

Knowing what I know now, I'd have gone straight for a LE1600. It would have been about the same price as the tc1100 but with larger screen. Anyway, too late to have regrets. The consenses seems to be that the LE1700 is just right for digital drawing so, I guess, I wouldn't have been satisfied just getting the older model (though the screen brightness is something that is making me think I've got the wrong machine).

I'll say what i don't recommend: Interspire shopping cart.

To say that it's meant to be a premium product there are some fundamental things missing in the backend - which I discovered when it was too late.

e.g. add a new attribute to a specific product - oh dear, all your previous attributes across similar products are now deleted. Please manually enter all these attributes all over again. Maybe this bug/feature has been resolved - I just don't understand how such a cart could have been designed with such fundamental things not working.
