My next one is to run the command prompt, powershell, and well... anything as administrator from a shortcut, instead of having to right click the shortcut and select run as administrator.

Either Win+X then A for admin command prompt or go to:
C:\Users\[UserName]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\System Tools

Right click the Command Prompt shortcut and select properties, hit the Advanced button, and check Run as Administrator.

That way it will always launch administrative when run from the start menu or taskbar pinned shortcut.

I'm just going to go with Wow! That is mind-blowingly stupid.

It may seem minor (given the tone of the article), but any small hole in a complex system can be leveraged into larger more dangerous territory.

Is it just me, or do the new Spoiler tags not work in Win10's IE11? Using Edge yes, but in IE11 I get the link-finger icon, and no reaction to click what-so-ever.

It helps if you mention which OS you're using.

1) How can I recover my files? My last backup was last week, and I've written quite a bit since then. I was actually about to back up again when I saw the annoying second folder and deleted it, not realizing they were linked. The folder was too large and bypassed the recycle bin.2)

Try the simplest options first. Right click pictures, select properties, then go to the Previous Versions tab to see if the system made a backup for you.

How can I fix the two folders issue? I have the same problem with my music folder also, and have had problems with the folders under my username seeming to disappear, reappear, and move for no apparent reason.

There is a high probability that you are looking at the Library view in the Explorer navigation tree that is designed to display the combined view of both the Public (All Users), and the Private (Your Actual Stuff) files. It just gives you a visual clue about the combined Library view by showing the 2 source folders in the navigation tree.

LOL ... Thanks for trying. :)

Easiest way... change your thinking.

Good lord man, I'm far too old for that! :D

Use a standard window frame.  Reserve a few pixels on the edges.  Color that the dominant color in your image.  Lay the image on top.  Ta da!

But seriously, I get what you're saying...(I think)... but that would solve the wrong issue. Because the standard window frame will still have square corners. Tao was suggesting I take a stab at doing something with round corners...and/or a more irregular shape.

And this is how I got in a fight with the jagged edges monster. With WPF I can just use a transparent PNG, toss it on the app window and all is dandy. But with a Windows Forms application (which I'm actually using), there isn't a provision for making the transparent color the already transparent part. It insists on having a particular color to ignore, and as soon as I do that I get jagged edges, leftover remnants of the trans color, or both ... making the aesthetic rather poo.

Here's a SS of the two options, Bottom is using WPF and XAML (EEK! The horror), and the top is (ugly) using the Windows Forms App mostly transparent-ish-ness..

Mouse Gestures
Finger Swiping
Double Clicking
Force Touch

I frequently have to turn these off because they drive the clients nuts on laptops when a casual - and accidental - brush of the touchpad causes applications to respond in unexpected/unwanted ways.

I can try...but no promises.

I spent most of the day playing with this, and I'll be damned if I can figure out any way of doing it that doesn't look like shit. With WPF, yes ... but I really don't like the idea of fighting with XAML the whole way. I'm trying to stick with - the at least half-assed familiar - C#/Windows Forms Application project type.

I've bounced between code samples, Photoshop, and VS13 all day...and everything I do ends up with jagged edges.

Oh yeah, the buttons look different here to your screenshot..

EEK! That looks like hell :D I wondered how long it would take for tile to bite me in the ass. Are you running a nonstandard DPI by chance? I reset the property to stretch, and uploaded a new copy.

I'm not having any luck getting the number pad plus/minus/etc. to fail.

I get zero number pad events of any kind. I have no idea what that means.

That's really bizarre, as it's the first thing I did ... Make sure the number pad, delete, backspace, and escape keys did what they were supposed to do for usability. I don't think I've ever used the top row of keys to type numbers unless I was stuck on a laptop.

Tomos seems to have the same ("wood grain") brown-ish-ness that I do, although he didn't mention if the number pad worked for him. All I can do at this point is wait-see who else (if anyone) chimes in on how this thing behaves for them to decide if it needs whacked with a hammer or something.

I look at it as a direct way to annoy you in order to get you to pay.  At that point, instead of going around, I just don't go.  It might seem extreme, but that's my approach.

Same here. I've got way better things to do with my time than play someone's silly game with intrusive ads. Be nice, or be gone. However I also reserve the right to hack anything pisses me off, especially if they throw an exit loop at me when I try to leave.

You might want to add a hex/dec/oct conversion option to attract the tech-savvy crowd here, but it looks refreshingly different in the awfully white Win10 world

Thanks, I was going for something style wise that was just a tad Steampunk. The problem with conversions, is that if I add one that may be handy it opens the door to more and more and more. And I really just wanted to keep this as simple as possible. This is why there isn't a square root button...because I've never in my life found a need for getting the square root of anything...so it was dropped in favor of other things I have found need for (frequently) in the past.

It is however an adventure in creating something finger friendly, which is why it's spread out farther than any of the other programs I've done in the past.

- Add a bit of a UI wrapper around the edges, maybe a quarter inch, with rounded corners, so that it doesn't quite feel like it "drops off a cliff" at the edges.

I see what you're driving at, but I have no idea how to do that. I can try...but no promises.

- Add theming, give users a choice of some five colors for the middle instead of Maroon-something you have now.

Maroon?? Zoiks! ...It's supposed to be a brownish wood tone. I wonder what the rest of the world sees it as..

- It doesn't seem to be number pad aware yet. That's huge - Except my phone the only time I'd use a calc prog is with the number pad.

Same here, and the number pad should work (it does here). Is there no response from anything, or is it just certain keys that don't seem to behave?

New computer, new OS, and a new IDE (Visual Studio 2013) ... And no idea what to do with'em. So I thought I'd toss together a small idiot project while I was getting used to the new trinity (eek!).

And while looking for ideas it occurred that the new calculator that comes with Windows 10 is just about the fugliest piece of software I've ever seen. The Metro flat UI is just flat-out cringe worthy, to the point that I don't even care what sort of fun/handy stuff it can do ... I just can't stand to look at ghastly the thing.

So I put together a very basic -(and probably equally hideous when I sober up)- calculator using C#/NET4, and every silly assed UI option I could find in VS13.

Calculator SS.jpg

Download should be below...assuming I got it attached properly.

@tomos - It's just an SSL error, so drop the s from the link and it works fine.

Zoiks! Their advice to disable (completely) IPv6 definitely sounds wise to heed - I've been doing that for a while because of it's lack of NAT.

I think this is close to a new thread!

Can y'all explain what any of "this" (in what level of Douglas Hofstadter context) this means!?

Other parts of "the tech world" are screaming about the end of address for IPv4, so to *disable* IPv6 ... is ... an explosion in a sphaghetti factory as the saying goes!

Let me make this simple. Even when they run out of IPv4 addresses, the addresses are/will still be good. So the only thing it really means is that:

You start with 10 bananas
10 people get 1 banana
the 11th person that shows has to get orange.

...So, yes the have to have/get the IPv6 oranges ready to go ... But the IPv4 bananas are, will, and shall continue to work for a very long time (e.g. easy back on the drum hammering FFS, because..).

The ever popular NAT layer of security was intentionally left out of the IPv6 standard...so everything will be a public address.

Everything...

I call ^that^ an issue.

In exploring this forum, if I click on 'bottom', it gives me a choice of 'top' or 'last'.
When I click on 'top', it gives me 'bottom' and 'last'.
I'm just letting you guys know that there is something seriously wrong here!
If you click on 'top', it should take you to where it says 'top'.
And when you click on 'bottom', you should go to where it says 'bottom'.
It's ass-backwards! You guys? Hello?

I've actually never noticed those links before... They're quite handy.

There may be more than one list there and a number of scripts, FWIW.  A number of claims being made on the thread definitely got my attention.

Zoiks! Their advice to disable (completely) IPv6 definitely sounds wise to heed - I've been doing that for a while because of it's lack of NAT.

For those that haven't run across this yet, you can't just uncheck it in Network Connection properties. To fully disable it:

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip6\Parameters\

Create new DWORD named DisabledComponents, and set its value to 0xffffffff

Then reboot.

Remember what your most complex query was like?

Honestly the queries used weren't that complex. It's just that RegEx is a bit of a blind spot for me, as I've never had time or the need to learn it. I know what it's for...and I knew the situation called for its usage...I just needed something to handle stumbling through the syntax so I could focus on getting the result right. And in that use case WildGem proved to be quite the gem indeed.

If you have any thoughts on how WildGem could be made even easier to use, let me know.

I've always felt that in any project success is best achieved by knowing when to quit f***ing with it. So to that end I wouldn't change anything. ;)

Like Einstein said: Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.

After a few months of not even thinking about this program, I ran into a need for it yesterday. So I was basically going into a production project with it cold. To that end I found it to be one of the most intuitive programs I've ever used, as it appears to have a virtually nonexistent learning curve.
