General Software Discussion / Re: Word Processor OS
« Last post by timns on January 10, 2011, 11:27 AM »
That's a great idea. I'm reformatting my netbook now, so I'll look around about doing that to get started. It's what I know, anyway.

How about Presto:

N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Re: NANY 2011 Release: Auspex - a Windows Productivity App
« Last post by timns on January 10, 2011, 11:09 AM »
Good catch!

Folks, can I direct your attention to this thread:

https://www.donation....msg231091#msg231091

Where Mr mouser has kindly created a little subboard for the app. I'm hoping we can launch various sub-threads to help track ideas, issues, requests, bugs etc.
703
All these ideas and prototypes... probably some real gold in there.

So! If anyone has anything they are thinking of starting, and posts it in the forum, I'll look in my 'code cupboard' and see if there's something that will help.

Java, C++, C#, Delphi.

I'm not so worried:

Boy, this thread sounds familiar. I guess I'm the same - lots of little thingies that are hopelessly specific, but solved some little requirement at the time.

...and, yes, a lot of false starts on projects that one day I hope to really do properly.

Timns Apps / Auspex
« Last post by timns on January 10, 2011, 09:23 AM »
Mr mouser has been very generous and set up a new board for me where we can discuss the apps what I wrote (with apologies to Ernie Wise)

So the first obvious one would be Auspex, which is my larger NANY contribution for 2011.

Where would we be without DC?

General Software Discussion / Re: slock - anyone using it still?
« Last post by timns on January 10, 2011, 07:18 AM »
In case anyone else ever finds themselves in the same boat - I got this going, thanks to the suggestions in this thread. My gratitude to one and all!

I used Oracle's VM Virtual Box to run the image, and it seems to be ok on any machine. So now we're well and truly back in bidness! (sic)

Now to code the stupid slock OUT of our products and hope our older clients see the light  :-\

Not looked throughu the whole thread, but I just quickly tried it out and found a bug: disabled the splash screen in the options - however it still shows when launching.

Oh yes. That's on my list. I'll do another release sometime this week, and make sure that's on there.

Thanks!

Go to the View menu, and choose "Flat View" - there are three options, so you'll need to find the one you like.

The help is pretty good, and the support forum is here:

They know a lot more than I do!

All kidding aside, one question I would very much like to see is: Do you sing or play a musical instrument?  :)

Good one. It would not surprise me if quite a few folks on here do. I play the guitar myself, but only as a hobby.

I am desperately hoping that cranioscopical is reading this thread, so we can discover if it's the kazoo or the zither that he plays. It simply has to be one or the other...  :D

actually i think we need to do a new fundraiser in the next couple of months, perhaps we can accompany that with another survey, and start brainstorming about questions we should ask now.  and then we need to get a volunteer who is willing to "analyze" the survey results and come up with some usless, wild, and unscientific conclusions about them.

I'd like to help with the useless stuff if someone gets me the numbers at the end of the survey...  :P

Ah - nice, it has bios and discographies and all sorts. Thanks!

I know what you mean. I just did a couple of weeks' work on a laptop at 1440x700 or so instead of my usual 1600x1200. That's when you really notice the programs that have huge hoggish ribbon bars or tool bars.

DOpus can definitely do that. You can select files based on all sorts of clever rules, and as nudone says, that if combined with 'flat' view should work quite well.

There's a very good support forum for DOpus which would probably have the details already.

ERROR: libcurl download error of http://www.donationcoder....aptor/pad/versioninfo.xml: Failed connect to www.donationcoder.com:80; No error

Where did the semi-colon come from in the address at the end of the line?

www.donationcoder.com:80; <------- or is that just bbcode's fault?

Living Room / DC Demographics
« Last post by timns on January 09, 2011, 12:44 PM »
Has there ever been a general survey of the DC population to find out not only where we're all based, but a bunch of other stuff that would, to me at least, be quite interesting?

I'm thinking about such things as:

age: min, average, max
sex: male, female, other
occupation in some broad sense
do you have a site or blog?
hobbies and interests in some broad sense
Have pets?
What is your greatest achievement?

The list could go on...

It could be quite entertaining: "0.0004% of DC-ers are left-handed Taurean cornflake collectors, over the age of 95 with a wooden leg and a parrot called 'Rolando'"

Yarr!

ok we'll do it for you, no worries

I have no doubt it'll be marvellous, and of course I'll be adding a little user guide sometime soon. I have help on that too, which is nice.

tim, you might be able to get away with no audio for whirly but it'll never work for auspex..

it goes MUCH faster recording a screencast with audio too, much less work!

Sorry, that won't be happening this weekend.  :(

I just uploaded the Whirlyword one: 15.1mb

I'll do Auspex later today too.

But don't let me hold up proceedings if you want to get on with the NANY finalisation.

Aargh. Well there's probably some Freudian reason why I made that typo  :-[
