Sorry; I should of course have given such an obvious information:   :-[

General Software Discussion / New strange error in Outlook: Find chain survey
« Last post by Curt on May 20, 2007, 11:28 AM »
I find it fun to try out different apps all the time, because I have both the time and the curiousity. Sometimes this will bring me into troubles, sometimes even big troubles... But this one is so far a minor annoyance: Whenever I click a link in the emails I receive, Outlook 2003 will open a box with the headline "Find chain survey" or how the English translation may go; see pic with the Danish text, and imply that I should find some exe file. I will then tell Outlook to disregard this, and the link will open. No big deal, but an annoyance. I have absolutely no idea what caused this little problem - too many new apps installed during one day to understand who is the sinner, [Edit: and I have no idea what a chain survey is]. Can you think of anything, or even better, offer a reasonable solution?

From Copenhagen, Curt writes regarding the annoying features whilst converting to CSV files and the like.

TOL tipster Rohn found a link that may be helpful:

I have used this tip from another site:
   http://exceltips.vit...s_in_a_CSV_File.html

The tip includes a macro that creates a CSV file.

I love the detailed search options I get with X1 and the accurate results.

I can truly understand this, because I tested X1 and was impressed.
But with WDS 3 being FREE....  ;)

What are your computers' specs like ?

I have a quite common PC, 512 MB 265 MHz RAM, Celeron D processor 3.33 GHz. But I would imagine a better question could be, how many documents? I only have in the neighbourhood / neighborhood of a thousand, and I only add a few a day. [Edit: 9.501 elements are indexed] So the search engine's indexer maybe don't have a job to do worth mentioning. To my understanding, once the docs are indexed, the indexer will only look out for changes.

Edit: MrCrispy, Remember to check Control Panel > Indexing, to see 'where', and > Avanced, to see 'what' -are being indexed. I know nothing about computers, so I have added .chm help files to 'what'.
6981
Each of the two settings have 3 steps, and with Indexing set to "lazy", and Querying set to "High load", the system then waits for you to have stopped any activity for a period of time before it'll start indexing anything not already in the Catalog. As soon as you start to use the mouse or keyboard, *poof*, it stops and waits for you again. Makes a huge difference.

You may even get good performance with the Indexing at the middle position, but ....

I don't think you should have added that "but .."! I use Windows Desktop Search 3.0 and the 'middle' settings, and I have not been able to detect any CPU usage from WDS at all.

General Software Discussion / Re: Ever used Windows CardSpace??

If I have understood the Wiki articles, then the site that uses OpenID will know that I am who I am claiming to be, but will not know who I am, but if they use CardSpace they will also know who I am.

General Software Discussion / Ever used Windows CardSpace??
« Last post by Curt on May 18, 2007, 10:06 AM »
Looking around at my 'new' XP I found this thing called Windows CardSpace. The idea of the program and the product, the electronic ID card, is to identify yourself in an fast, easy and reliable manner. It can be used to identify yourself to your net bank or the local power supplier or what/who-ever. It can even replace the way we normally have to register to a forum or a program, because you can set up various degrees of info you are willing to give. Only a few infos to the forum and a lot of infos to the bank. And so on.      Did you check this out on your own XP?

I have of course created some cards, but I have never had the chance to actually use them. Nor have I ever heard of any site or company using them. Did you ever come across a site or company or institution that actually uses Windows CardSpace??
 :tellme:
If 'No'; why don't 'we' use this? It sounds easy and safe. I would imagine the Windows CardSpace is a good idea.

http://en.wikipedia....ki/Windows_CardSpace

I would like to show you a screenshot, but the program prevents such for safety reasons. Which may be okay.

Yes, if you are a private user, but most users aren't. They work at the office and don't have a say on what program they are to use, have they.

Ribbon haters should read Computerwold's article about  pschmid's CustomizeRibbons (Free or $30 Pro versions) and Addintools' Classic Menu (several versions at $15-$30).

They have been around just as long as Office 2007 itself, but maybe you missed them, or just didn't think of it. But it seems to me, from your wordings, that these two plugins must be very interesting to you, since you "love to hate" those ribbons that much...

[Edit: It was "smtp.mail.dk" that had been changed into 'localserver'.
Problem solved.

Thanks a lot for your inputs!]

original post:

I tried Msgtag and it blocked sending, too, but I removed it yesterday and both Outlooks were again sending as normal. This new error may have to do with proxys; I don't know. I will have to figure out what proxy is, and how the proxy settings should have been altered; I didn't change any email client settings. Can fiddling with Internet browsers change proxy settings for the email clients?

Sigh! When will I stop playing around!? I did this and that and so on and on, but I know I didn't touch my mail clients or any of their plugins. NeverTheLess Outlook 2003 and Outlook Express 2002 suddenly won't send. They are both added to Trusted in the firewall. All programs are connecting to the Internet, and I can upload pictures, and both mail clients can receive mail, but not send. What can possibly be wrong?

Thanks a lot, DC, for this great feature.

---

English is by far not my first language, so I had to look up what the heck Darwin (and Raymond Chandler) was/were talking about; "Split infinitives":

  Merriam-Webster Collegiate® Dictionary

split infinitive

Function:           noun
Date:               1897

: an infinitive with to having a modifier between the to and the verbal (as in “to really start”)
usage The split infinitive was discovered and named in the 19th century. 19th century writers seem to have made greater use of this construction than earlier writers; the frequency of occurrence attracted the disapproving attention of grammarians, many of whom thought it to be a modern corruption. The construction had in fact been in occasional use since the 14th century; only its frequency had changed. Even though there has never been a rational basis for objecting to the split infinitive, the subject has become a fixture of folk belief about grammar. You can hardly publish a sentence containing one without hearing about it from somebody. Modern commentators know the split infinitive is not a vice, but they are loath to drop such a popular subject. They usually say it's all right to split an infinitive in the interest of clarity. Since clarity is the usual reason for splitting, this advice means merely that you can split them whenever you need to.

- quote: "The construction had in fact been in occasional use since the 14th century.."

... can't stand split infinitives  :-[ OK, so it dates me a bit, but years of schooling cannot be undone...

I would say it dates you quite a bit...   :P

General Software Discussion / any DIALSTOP on your XP ??
« Last post by Curt on May 16, 2007, 07:39 PM »
I thought I would enhance my Outpost firewall a little, and installed the new plugin "dialstop", but it wouldnt. Not fully. So I clicked uninstall, but it wouldn't do that either. And then Outpost stopped displaying the tray icon. I tried a lot, but finally I removed the dialstop file, and will now clean the registry from all its leftovers. Only, I totally need first to know if XP has any dialstop files by itself, so I beg of you [Edit: "you" who does not have this plugin for Outpost installed!] to search your XP registries and tell if there are any dialstop at all, please!??

I think it's likely that not enough people were chipping in for what are some very nice programs.  A man has to eat.
You are of course right, but why go from 0 to 30 ? Now people will stop using his app. Wouldn't it be more in the original freeware spirit to let the price be say $5?

1.000 x 30     = 30.000
1.000.000 x 5 = 5.000.000

I am certain Screenshot Captor is a fine (and free) program, maybe The Finest. But that is not always enough, is it. FastStone Capture is easier to figure out how to use (and this without an IT-English dictionary), and has this brilliant integration with the Image Viewer - which is also an image editor. This gives a very fast result. I am really glad I installed FastStone only the day before it became shareware!

General Software Discussion / Re: KatMouse Query
« Last post by Curt on May 15, 2007, 11:48 AM »
Sounds as if it is a fine program. I am not going to try it, because I like my 'click mouse wheel to auto-scroll' feature in Volumouse a lot. When you have finished trying this KatMouse you really should try out Volumose as well. It too has options for focus on various windows and programs. [Bummer again, Curt: That feature came from another app. Volumouse has a very different kind of focus activation]

The old Volumouse is now being launched in two all new (32 or 64 bits, Vista ready) beta versions!

Volumouse Beta Release Notes:

Volumouse now works under Windows Vista (both 32-bit and x64 versions)
Under Vista, there is no default mixer device anymore, but you can select the default playback and recording device in the component combo-box.

Under Vista, You can select more 6 channels, in addition to the 2 standard left and right channels.

Under Vista, changing the master volume doesn't affect the default left/right balance, as in the previous version of Windows.

In the x64 version, Volumouse only works when the focused application is 64-bit. When you work with 32-bit application under Windows x64, Volumouse doesn't receive the wheel events.

All default settings are now saved into .cfg file instead of the Registry.

The new config file is not compatible with the config file created by the previous versions of Volumouse.

Added new options to "Use the wheel when" combo-box: Windows Media Center is focused, iTunes is focused, Mouse cursor is over the Vista Gadgets.

Added additional rule line (6 instead of 5 in previous versions...)
