Anyone notice that Google seems to have rediscovered DonationCoder?

Many of my searches are related to software, and for the longest time Google seemed blisfully unaware of this very forum.
Just lately the DC results are there, as of course they should be. 8)

from about this post on - For what it's worth, DC Homepage is now google PageRank 6 there's some info about it

...and this one with Grace Potter, Joe Satriani, Steve Kimock, Reed Mathis, Willy Waldman and Stephen Perkins, where they cover Neil Young's Cortez the Killer, is fantastic:

+1
Initially I found Satriani's guitar sound too clean (for the song that's in it) but he is really good, and I just love the trumpet, it makes it I think - and naturally the singing, and, and... :)

One of my favorites, Kwoon - I lived on the moon
if you're up to a 10 min track that only starts to warm up at the 3 min mark, I like this one by them - Kwoon - Ayron Norya

Finished Programs / Re: DONE: On Screen Button That Sends Keyboard Commands
« Last post by tomos on April 10, 2011, 03:13 PM »
Tried the download from the dcmembers server myself, but all went just fine, though a bit slow, IMHO.

I'll notify mouser about this, to see if there is something I could/should have done different
Testing:
I just downloaded an app elsewhere no problem,
but still have problems with this, and one of Skwire's apps that I tried (Anuran, also dcmembers) - both unsuccessful.

[edit] :-\ cant reach XYPlorer site at all, and downforeveryoneorjustme says it's just me... so maybe the problem is not "over there" [/edit]

tried downloading it form the DcMembers server but both times it was corrupt.

it could be that there's a corrupt version in your cache - you could try reloadingthe page &/or clearing the cache

[edit] then again it could be wonky - I cant even get it to download here, it says (around) 40KB/sec but it's not actually downloading the last third [/edit]

Living Room / Re: The Evil Side of Nature
« Last post by tomos on April 09, 2011, 03:59 PM »
:) have you all very little contact with animals, or what?! Our family always had cats - that lived in the adjoining garage. Growing up I saw a few pretty gory things over the years, like the tom that killed the kittens, presumably so as he could have another go. Or a female being chased by ten males - although I suspect nothing happened at the end there apart from a.. eh, tom-cat fight. I'm sure people that grew up on farms would have lots of gory storys.

It's an interesting and entertaining read, but on a serious note, I think "nature" gets a bad rap - being demonised and called "evil".
Really, if they had included humans in there it would have been more balanced & made more sense, been a bit more thought provoking, and could still have been been entertaining (maybe even more so).
I mean, come on -  Oh look, the evil deer eat birds - how could they !! ;D

Of course the disney world view is probably the real problem here.
And
"as suburban homes encroach on deer habitat, deer that are fed by admiring humans -- or that browse on lawns and garden vegetables -- lose their natural fear of people."
(and that's quoted under the 'evil' side of deer...)

I have both, I like having both :) I reckon at some stage I might give up on Dopus cause of the upgrade costs. I am more used to DOpus though, and it is more, eh, comprehensive - and I've invested lots of time in customising it over the years (XY is a much more recent aquisition). But out of the box I actually prefer XY (but really I'm no power user of either app).

XY is very portable, with "Portable File Associations / Portable Openwith Menu" - fairly easy to setup. I love the Portable Openwith Menu.
Search is super fast.
~ Some features I'm not so familiar with -

A good list of features (with links to more detail) here
Also, with XY you get great "software-satisfaction" from the amount of updates... :-)

Oh, and offer smaller plans. The free offering is a bit little for me, but OTOH I really don't need 100GB of storage. I can understand why they don't want to go into, say, per-gigabyte prices... But perhaps 10 or 25GB increments?

+1 to that.
Dropbox is the same - no smaller plans. Mind you I see you get 100GB with spideroak & only 50GB with dropbox - both for $100
I'd be tempted by a 50GB SpiderOak plan...

I wanted to try the CSV packege mostly for the Timer plugin but when I set my first timer. it seemed fine but when the timer tried to post a message on the screen (when the time was up)  it crashed FARR.

There's people talking on the previous page (of this thread) about the timer not working.

Well, I'm happy to be back with it and it's working well

First feature request - that Enter would paste the first clip on the QucikPaste list (like in FARR)
Currently Enter closes QuickPaste - which is handy too, but I think most people would be happy enough to stick with Escape for that - I think...

General Software Discussion / SpiderOak - very nice people =)
« Last post by tomos on April 07, 2011, 06:04 AM »
I got an account with SpiderOak sometime in 2008 (I think that was shortly after they started up) - it was a special offer - I got a 10GB account.

I believe I never actually used it. After seeing positive reports about it here (especially that all data is encrypted) I rooted around and fired it up but was unable to access the account. I contacted them and was very honest about not using it etc. The software was an early version & wasnt working/connecting any more, but my password didnt work online either (which may well have been my fault). Anyways in the end we cancelled the account and I created a new one and they gave me 10GB on it (default free account is 2GB)

Which I think was very good of them, service was prompt and very friendly too

General Software Discussion / Re: Buying/installing/experiencing Adobe - PIA
« Last post by tomos on April 07, 2011, 05:53 AM »
Unfortunately they're keeping their standards - it really does not do me good having to interact with adobe.

German site - when I view my product of choice & click "Buy", I keep getting sent to the educational store (very small text at the top of the page, the only way I knew something was up was that it was cheaper than the US price.

Of course that could not be the case (European prices cheaper than US) turns out Acrobat pro is US$449 in the US, but costs a whopping US$797 here - both prices without any taxes.

I'm going to go do something nice to get rid of this negativity. [edit] there: something nice to balance it out: SpiderOak - very nice people =) [/edit]

Sort-of on topic:
Anyone know what is the legality of giving an American address (I can use my sister's) and using the software in Europe ??

#1 was just some first starting glitch I reckon

#2 IMO it "would be better to show the Favourites column by default" - for beginners - to save on confusion

#3 my system date format is like this: 2011-04-06 19:30:41
Just saying it would be nice if CH&S could pick up on that and show that format under Date/Time - but as I say that would be like icing on the cake!

Re [2] -
OK I think I see the problem - there's "Favourites" and "My Favourites"
the Favourites column (tick-box) is not shown by default, so I presumed the above were the same.

Maybe it would be better to show the Favourites column by default?

Clipboard Help+Spell / [CH&S] after a long break - beginner's queries
« Last post by tomos on April 06, 2011, 05:00 PM »
after a long break, I've installed CH&S again.

I was never a power user but I'm a bit stumped off the bat here. Key points/queries are numbered.

I have text-items (pre-prepared) that I want to repeatedly paste - I presume these go in favourites.
As I copy each item, it shows in "QuickPaste" in the main window. [1] I would have thought these would also show under "Clipboard" but they dont...**
I copy these to My Favourites.

[2] When I go to paste though, the Favourites sub-menu is empty.
Favourites having the text I want to paste the most often, I'm wondering is there a way to have these at top level - i.e. *not* as sub-items (OTOH I can see this could cause the list to be too long, but it would be a nice option) Found that option - after changing Favourites to top level, they dont show at all...

[3] it would be really nice if CH&S picked up on the default system date (well, that would be icing)

** I see copied text is now showing under "Clipboard" (New) - but the first batch of text copied (6 items) not shown there

Thanks cmpm

it would be interesting to see if you can actually produce anything with it.
It does say:
Fuse your local data with map services to create custom maps.

Also, there's a couple of suggestions in the comments for free opensource gis programmes (qgis, uDig, MapWindow)

I really look forward to the day Microsoft ends up in court trying to enforce such patents. Because that is the day they'll see those blatantly BS patents ruled invalid.

...but if they're so BS why do they even get given a patent in the first place :tellme:

... Monk Parakeets where I live. ...

in a good few cities along the Rhine in Germany there's large colonies of an originally tropical parrot. One story says that a treefall from a big storm knocked a wall of an importers shop. I'm not sure how well they've lived through the last couple of very hard winters, but they've been here wild since the 70's so they've already survived hard winters. It's no 'infestation' though - they are spreading, but slowly.

Doesn't a bird normally experience high-velocity wind in its normal life in the wild? I don't know the speeds at which this kind parrot typically flies, but in the avian kindgom, birds flying at speeds equivalent to a car's highway speeds is pretty normal. Peregrine falcons dive at speeds over 200mph.
It an interesting one -
I dont know how fast birds fly - but the ones that dive are built for it, and a parrot is not one of them!

now that I look - http://www.stanford....essays/How_Fast.html
Generally birds follow the facetious advice often given to pilots -- "fly low and slow." Most cruise speeds are in the 20-to-30-mph range, with an eider duck having the fastest accurately clocked air speed of about 47 mph. During a chase, however, speeds increase; ducks, for example, can fly 60 mph or even faster
which (60m) isn't too far off of 100km, so sounds like you correct...
