Hm... That website isn't loading for me. Is it working for anyone else?

EDIT: It's working now.

General Software Discussion / Re: What is your preferred font?

For coding: Dina.

For most other things: Whatever the default font is.

Though when I do select a specific font for things, I tend to go with Trebuchet.

Living Room / Game Du Jour SURPRISE!
« Last post by Deozaan on August 29, 2009, 02:16 AM »
Did anyone else just get a strange email from the Game du Jour notification/subscription thingy?

I think their subscription list was hacked, because it was like a goatse-like game with accompanying screenshot. But today's Game du Jour is Depths of Peril.

I'm sure we'll hear more about this soon.

I've got some suggestions for you, Skwire, if you want to polish it up a bit.

No new features, just polishing what you already have.
Sure...I need to try and get jammo's requests in, too.

Whoops! I guess I should have subscribed to updates to this thread. Now it's been so long I don't remember what suggestions I had.

Less work for you then.

I think I've spent more time on Defense Grid: The Awakening, but Plants vs. Zombies is probably 2nd with regard to time spent playing a TD game.

lol, just when i thought it was safe to go back to my normal routines. must resist the temptation to look up "defense grid". :P

Don't resist! Download the demo on Steam and try it! I wrote a review of defense grid earlier this year.

yeah, a big time-sucker, this one.. i hadn't played tower defense games this intensely for some time.

I think I've spent more time on Defense Grid: The Awakening, but Plants vs. Zombies is probably 2nd with regard to time spent playing a TD game.

Interestingly enough, those two games are also the only two TD games I have purchased.

Apparently when I started practicing indent styles, I used the 1TBS.

But since I've been working with Torque, it appears I've started using the Allman/ANSI style.

It wasn't my intent to start an indenting style religious war. This topic wasn't asking for a discussion on the superior indenting style. Now that I know these things have names, I think I can more adequately phrase my question:

How would one correctly vertically space the brackets of an if/else statement using Allman style? It appears to me that the answer is my last example in the original post.

Thanks for the feedback and information.

Okay, so when I first was learning programming, I learned to create code blocks with the curly bracket on the starting line, like so:

Code: ActionScript [Select]
  1. function myFunction() {
  2.   // multiple lines of code here
  3. }

But since I've been using Torque Game Builder and coding in TorqueScript, the standard practice is to open the block of code on a new line so that the opening and closing brackets are lined up:

Code: ActionScript [Select]
  1. function myFunction()
  2. {
  3.   // multiple lines of code here
  4. }

That's fine and all, and I've successfully made the transition in coding style, and this topic isn't really about the personal preference of where to put the opening bracket of a code block. The question really is, how does this style work when immediately opening up another block of code, for example from an else statement? This is how it seems natural to me, coming from my background putting the bracket on the same line as the code that indicates I'm about to open a block of code (see line 4 below).

Code: ActionScript [Select]
  1. if (statement)
  2. {
  3.   // multiple lines of code here
  4. } else {
  5.   // multiple lines of code here
  6. }

But if I'm trying to stay consistent with putting opening brackets on a new line, should I do it like this?

Code: ActionScript [Select]
  1. if (statement)
  2. {
  3.   // multiple lines of code here
  4. } else
  5. {
  6.   // multiple lines of code here
  7. }

But then that looks weird, so should it be

Code: ActionScript [Select]
  1. if (statement)
  2. {
  3.   // multiple lines of code here
  4. }
  5. else
  6. {
  7.   // multiple lines of code here
  8. }

But then the else looks strange all by its self.

I'm confused... Any tips and reasons on the "proper" or "best" way to handle this?

I (think I) know this was just a tongue-in-cheek joke, but I've been seriously thinking about this since I first read about it.

Neither method seems to really work. You've already pointed out the drawbacks of living as if today were the last day of your life, but living as if you had another 100 years would probably make one think his death was so far away that he had plenty of time and, being the procrastinators that we inherently are, nothing would change. Alternating each mindset every day would be too schizophrenic but much longer periods than that and you'd end up with the same problems.

So I've been trying to come up with a better idea on something that would really motivate me to, as you described so well, "live in the moment, take chances, and enjoy the wonder and delight of our daily existence" while also "[taking] the long view, [planning] for the future, and [finding] the discipline to do the things that may not be fun today but will lead to happiness down the road." It's hard to think of a concept that communicates that idea and portrays the emotion that would provide adequate motivation to live in such a manner. Maybe it's just best to say:

"Live in the moment, take chances, and enjoy the wonder and delight of our daily existence while also taking the long view, planning for the future, and finding the discipline to do the things that may not be fun today but will lead to happiness down the road."

It's certainly not a cute, sentimental, Tweetable statement. But I think it works. It's functional and conveys everything it should. That should be enough.

To answer the original question: I think our printer gets used more now than it has in the past few years since my wife took up "couponing."

It became so expensive to replace our ink cartridges every few weeks that we bought a laser printer. The "teaser" toner ran out since we bought it, but we're still on our first full toner cartridge.

I don't print things very often, but my wife does.

@CWuestefeld: Yes, I had already found that it did not work in Word, and when I saw your post and the image, I went back and reinstalled OfficeTab - in case I had made some kind of mistake. Same result though.

It's very frustrating.

Maybe it's the difference between a 32bit system and a 64bit system?

Mass Effect is $19.99 on Steam, but $20 USD won't cover the amount PayPal skims off the top. I can't be bothered right now to look up the amount they take. If you can't be bothered either, then just include a few more dollars.

I have successfully gifted games to several other people here, as seen in this thread, totaling 21 transactions. Some were from the same people who just sent me a private message after our first transaction because they knew they could rely on me.

I'm happy to gift you the game as well, but I need the entire amount up front.

If you're interested, send the money via paypal [@t] deozaan [dawt] com with a reminder of what game (Mass Effect) and an e-mail address I should send the gift to and I'll get it done. Don't forget to include a little extra money to cover PayPal's commission they take off the top.

General Software Discussion / Re: Chrome Experiments

Interesting. I do think that the Google Chrome OS (browser as platform) will make a difference with how we view both software and hardware. Not for everyone or every situation, but will do for many, especially anyone doing their computing not on a traditional desktop.

You wrote that article as if you were already running Chrome OS. But Wikipedia says it won't be released for about another year. So how are you running it already?

Doesn't this mean that all calls calls to your unique google number will go through google's system?
What's the business model of this system? How do they get paid?

That's a good question. There haven't been any ads in regards to the phone... there probably are some ads on the google voice website but with adblock plus you'd never see them.

The only thing I've seen them mention prices about is international calling, and the rates appear to be fairly competitive.

But other than that, sms are free, local (anywhere is USA) is free, voicemail is free, it's all free for what I've been using it for.

MPAA advice to educators concerning ripping DVD's in order to have short clips for classroom use.

http://www.boingboin...to-teachers-don.html

Ha!

The MPAA responded with a video showing how to camcord (!) movies from a flat screen monitor, arguing that educators and students should do this instead of ripping DVDs. In the words of media literacy researcher Martine Courant Rife, that's like typing up a quote from a book, taking it outside, chiseling the words in a rock, photographing the rock, scanning the photo, and running OCR on it. And for what?
6997
I imagine a simple web app based on this idea could be very useful.

It's basically a glorified ToDo list, except specifically for tasks that must be done again and again.

Basically, it just needs a description of the chore, the repeat rate for the chore, and the ability to either refile (set it to pop up at the next interval) or delay one day ("do tomorrow" option). If you could log in and it would show the tasks that need to be done with a simple link for these two options, that's about all that's needed.

General Software Discussion / Chrome Experiments
« Last post by Deozaan on August 24, 2009, 04:51 PM »
We think JavaScript is awesome. We also think browsers are awesome. Indeed, when we talk about them, we say they are the cat's meow – which is an American expression meaning AWESOME.

In light of these deeply held beliefs, we created this site to showcase cool experiments for both JavaScript and web browsers.

These experiments were created by designers and programmers from around the world using the latest open standards, including HTML5, Canvas, SVG, and more. Their work is making the web faster, more fun, and more open – the same spirit in which we built Google Chrome.

One of the featured experiments is something called Twitch. What's cool about it is that it's a series of tiny switch games that take anywhere from 10 seconds to a couple of minutes to finish, and they open up in a series of different windows that all are connected. Take a look at (and click) the image for more information about Twitch.

Note that these experiments are generally only tested/designed to work with Google Chrome and may not work in other browsers.
