Living Room / Re: Build a $250 PC That Doesn’t Suck
« Last post by f0dder on July 31, 2007, 08:23 PM »
I used to run 350W for my AMD64 3500+ with a GF6600 card and a bunch of harddrives, that was just fine. For my current AMD64x2 4400+ with GF7600 and a bunch of harddrives, I now have a 550W Antec Neo HE550EC, which I got because it has a nice modular (ie., less cable clutter) design.

I'd stay away from micro-atx cases unless you opt for a really low-end power-efficient CPU, otherwise you'll surely run into heat problems. I lost a harddrive (fortunately in a raid-mirror setup) because of heat issues from a too small case, it had idle CPU temperature of 50-60C when it should only be ~30C... please do consider!

Context menu is way too slow though, I'd have to reach out for my mouse (or use the context-menu shortcut key, but still having to wade through menus) - the idea of keyboard shortcuts is that they're very convenient and fast to use.

Still, thanks for pointing it out :)

General Software Discussion / Re: ODF — the inevitable format?
« Last post by f0dder on July 31, 2007, 08:17 AM »
I don't think ODF is the be-all-end-all format, but I sure hope it'll be accepted and OOXML will be dumped, on the simple grounds that the OOXML specs are too long and complex and flawed.

Both formats seem to be pretty much XML memory dumps of internal structures, rather than well planned and 'interchange friendly' documents, though. And XML formats, while nice for interchange, are retarded as main-use format.

well the company i mentioned here has discovered the error of their ways so i will remove this as far as i can.
You shouldn't remove a post because a company "has discovered the error of their ways" - better to strike-through the complaint, and then have a non-strikethrough notice under stating that they've nicened up. It's always good to see when somebody learns from their mistakes...

Long live the US of A :)

Poor old Halvar.

Be careful with those "registry optimizers"... they aren't going to help much speedwise, and there's always the risk of major fubar. Usually not worth it, imho.

So, known for bloaty graphics instead of technical merits? ;)

And speed extractor... that just means "double-clicking archive extracts"? I thought it would've been something cool, like improving decompression speed.

Sorry for dissing, but I get a bit annoyed with press releases that try to make basically nothing sound like it's something...

Instead of TinyURL links, you could just URLify the specific item... I've become weary of TinyURL because of people trying to hide referrer links (no, not accusing you of that, just saying that I get ticks whenever I see them now :) )

You can probably get away with 1 gig of ram total since you don't do gaming, but you do mention vmware... I'd try to get 2x1gig if at all possible. Sure, you could expand with another 2x512 later, but it's safest to use identical memory modules, and you won't always be able to get exactly the same some months/years later.

I'll have to agree with Carol, as usual :) - go for an AM2 motherboard and CPU, shouldn't be more expensive, and gives a better upgrading flexibility. Also heed the PSU advice - don't be blinded by wattage only though, a 400W stable+power-efficient is much better than a 700W lahlahlah PSU.

Here in .dk I've used TDC (formerly called Tele Danmark... yes, monopoly) and CyberCity. Been pretty satisfied with speed and uptime of both, but phone support? Nah. I've only ever needed it for 'tricky' stuff (like "wtf did you change my static IP to change my line speed?"), and TDC weren't able to help in those situations, ever.

So I moved to CyberCity and their "cheaper but no support", and it's worked just perfectly. And there's still support if there's actually something wrong with the line...

I see what you are saying, but wouldn't the application hotkeys over-ride that and open that window any way?
Not necessarily, and I just checked with the other forum, it works the way I described... so it's definitely doable!

no offense, but maybe this
AHK BBCodeWriter v7.0.2 - An offline BBCode Editor
is something from interest for some of you?
Why would anybody take offense at a good suggestion? :)

I still think the hotkeys would be a nice addition, but the BBCodeWriter might be a good idea for external posting, instead of Notepad++ (since np++ lacks those specific shortcuts etc.)

Evil Elf: imho it's not a good idea, for this forum anyway, to set a strict limit on amounts of topics that can be created before you're considered to be spamming - it's more useful to look at content of the topics.

And I also don't see a reason for any scapegoat "warning signs" or the like. Might be necessary on other forums, but things work quite fine here without them. Heck, I think a reason that things work so well here, is that we don't go along with all those punishment ideas and rigid rules... doesn't work everywhere, but it's worked fine here so far :)

Ctrl+B would conflict with my browser's hotkeys...that would open the window to manage my bookmarks.

None of the others conflict with mine, but they could conflict on some other browser.
True - that could be a problem. Imho you probably don't want to bookmark the "make new post" page after you've hit reply, but it's a problem for the quick-reply field. BUT... if the hotkeys could somehow be 'local' so they're only active when the quick-reply field has focus?

Oh christ, I completely missed this thread >_<

I wonder if it's the PECompact compression that ticks it off, or it actually manages to unpack and scan the real executable. Of course there's no malicious code in fSekrit, but it does access it's own .exe file, which can be classified as suspicious by heuristic scanning...

Hey mouser, I wonder if you could add a little feature request?

On another forum, by accident I pressed Ctrl+B, and lo and behold - a <B></B> pair was inserted (of course with square brackets, but I dunno how to do square brackets in a post without it acting as bbcode). For longer posts, I compose my stuff in notepad++, but for shorter (and thus quick) posts, Ctrl+B, Ctrl+I and Ctrl+U shortcuts could be pretty decent... (also, if a selection is detected, wrap the selection in tags, just like the icons work currently).

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: SendMessage Plug-in
« Last post by f0dder on July 29, 2007, 03:48 PM »
The particular way of requesting features in Un4Seen land works like this:

If you have a suggestion for a new feature, then the accepted way of getting it added is to form a mob armed with pitchforks and flaming torches, and march on Castle Luck. Popularity of new features is gauged by mob size, and accuracy of thrown pitchforks.

I'll post something on the forum's request thread later. I need to assemble some new suggestions to add to the unaccepted ones in the last version.

Seems like an arrogant bastard... wouldn't use any of the guy's products.
6968
Hm, pretty weird I've never bumped into that problem - I mean, I've done things like having Visual Studio 2005 open with a decent-sized project, paint shop pro 8 with a bunch of images, µtorrent happily churning away in the background, several cmd.exe prompts, screenshot captor, process explorer, thebat, website watcher and plenty more stuff, after a week of uptime... sure, I do have 2 gigs of ram, but according to that article it's because of a fixed-size heap limit, so I should've seen it anyway? :-s

Hardware limitations prevent me from running things like that on my 9x machine, but you can still run some rather GDI-intensive things...just make sure that is all you are running (close anything you really don't need), make sure you have freshly rebooted the machine first, and be prepared to reboot again when you are done.
-app103
Hehe, good thing I got away from 9x years ago :)

I remember playing with 3d studio max on my win98se... was hellish. I did have to jump through those reboot-and-cleanup hoops, but eventually I'd run out of GDI resources, and I'd have to reboot. Didn't get the GDI BSODs very often though, thankfully.

File archiver 7-Zip won the top award as all-over best project and also picked up the prize for best technical design.
(emphasis is mine).

Couldn't help but chuckle at that part. Anybody who have dealt with the LZMA SDK from 7zip probably feels the same.

If you don't mind doing it manually, try http://www.codeproje...wScraper_Utility.asp - it's "center" feature is annoying on multimonitor systems, though :)
6971
I did for a while, in the dw2/dw3 days - that's long enough ago that I might even have used it on win98se :). Didn't cause me too much problems, and those versions ran fairly well as far as I rememb er...
6972
Thing is, your hosting company can have the best backup power system in the world... but that won't help much if the power outage knocks down all nearby routers.
6973
Yeah, it probably just checks if any apps have been installed after itself, and warns about those instead of tracking real dependencies. Seems like a scare tactic to me...

General Software Discussion / Re: Web 2.0 Poll
« Last post by f0dder on July 28, 2007, 06:52 AM »
The "technologies" of web2.0 are nice enough, allowing browser-based stuff to be a bit more interactive, refreshing without doing a full page reload, and preeeeetty stripes ;)

I think the "everything will run in a browser" idea is ludicrous though. There's reasons we moved away from dumb terminals and mainframes... But sure, some tasks run fine in a browser, and we'll probably be seeing more of those, especially for casual use stuff - most people don't need all the features office offers, for instance.
