@BartelsMedia,
personally I think the first post should have been deleted (as a first post, I dont think it's on) but there is a tradition of non-censorship here (I'm not a moderator btw).
I certainly dont support it (the first post) and dont really see the point of it.

I actually thought your first response was fair enough, but I took you up on one thing you said, because I thought it was unreasonable:
But if you re-read their post [OP] you will see that this is an assumption as well:-

Now, as you seem to be an established DC member, would you please tell us the reason why you don't post with your real DC account but use a dummy account for that? Is it, because you are a jealous competitor or is it, because you know that your posting is not true and you don't want to harm your real account's reputation?

at which stage you took off - in the style of the OP (or worse)

I think this thread should be locked at this stage.

I tried an exercise ball for a while, but it kept rollling (forwards or backwards - I cant remember).
Maybe it was too big, I dunno...

I've seen a small exercise ball in a metal "frame-chair" - seemed comfortable - but I just sat in it briefly, & have no idea if they widely available.

At least you have a sense of humor

Of course, I thought it would be the other way. Some folks look so grumpy here at DC.

Boys, we have been severely accused and offended by this troll and you expect us to ignore that? Sorry, but this is quite difficult, especially as it was so easy to pull the plug out of his pointless arguments.
-BartelsMedia (April 20, 2011, 09:21 AM)

The first post is pretty foolish imo (I'd be happy to see it removed - a first post like that is not on, imo)

But,
if you respond like this (conspiracy theories, personal atrtacks), you are only fulfilling all the negative descriptions of the OP . . .

The first poster made a lot of assumptions, using circumstantial evidence (I wouldnt want to be on trial with them as the judge...)

But if you re-read their post you will see that this is an assumption as well:-

We regret to tell you that we also detected an unauthorized access to one of our server systems. We assume that the attackers were able to purloin data of customers. Sensitive data such as billing information etc. is not affected by this, because Ashampoo does not store this data.

We summarized all pieces of information concerning this incident for you and would like you to read the following website: http://www.ashampoo.com/datatheft

Living Room / Re: Is Amazon the new Apple?
« Last post by tomos on April 20, 2011, 03:26 AM »
On their developer blog, Amazon responded the following day, stating simply that the policy in question was from a dated text file, and that a PDF elsewhere on the site contained the correct terms.

The response seems fishy. The IGDA's letter states that they reached out to Amazon several times and that Amazon were unwilling to change terms. If it were simply a matter of referencing the wrong terms, surely they would have pointed that out. Secondly, Amazon's response doesn't actually address the concerns stated in the IGDA letter. Even taking Amazon's 'correction' into account, many of the IGDA's concerns still seem valid.

seems like that (if it were true) would be fairly easy to check...

I notice I'm not able to remove older backedup revisions of a file - so I had to remove the database file completely from the SpiderOak backup
(which deleted 3GB space!)

I'm curious... How do you plan to solve this uploading/backup issue (same as mine, basically) ?

I dont really know... I do plan to contact SpiderOak, but I busy this week, so it will have to wait a little.

I like to keep at least one backup online, I can probably set one up one with Super Flexible File Synchronizer & Amazon S3.

My current solution will be to stick with dropbox until this is fixed -- I don't have this problem with dropbox, as I said. They must use a different delta backup algorithm.
That, or DropBox uses special handling for certain files, including access databases?

FWIW:
Dropbox was unable to backup my database until it was closed -
SpiderOak is able to back it up while it's open

As you probably read, I wonder why my DB is re-uploaded each time it's backed up (i.e. : I periodically send the DB to a folder monitored by spideroak -- the DB is RC4 encrypted). I understand the UI doesn't mirror everything happening behind the scene. But I can definitely see the amount of uploaded data each time.

Thanks for pointing this out Armando - I seem to have the same problem. My 1.5GB of backups has turned into 4GB+ over a period of a couple of days so I'm presuming this is the problem (InfoQube database, encrypted, 50 copies of it showing on SpiderOak).

> But I can definitely see the amount of uploaded data each time.
how do you see/check this?

Coding Snacks / Re: Windows Reorganizer
« Last post by tomos on April 18, 2011, 09:09 AM »
is there a difference?

Thread name = Documents Organizer
Do you know a soft to scan a folder and subfolders and output all in shorcut's mode to a destination folder organized cronologically.
That's :
source folder : By example Y:\datos
to destination folder : by example Y:\Crono
with the subfolders 2011 to make reference to year
containing the subfolder 06.2011 to make reference to month
and finally containing the subfolder 12.06.2011 to make reference to the date.
Able to control years, months, and days of the creation file.
Able to exclude from the source folder some extensions of file.

This thread:
I would like :

Source folder : a folder of my election containing files and subfolders.
Each file has a creation date. We can exclude system files and other extensions not proper to control.
The basic idea would be : reorganize documents, audios, videos, images, and usual files by crono.

Destination folder : The coding snack give the possibility to generate or use a previosly created.
The destination folder is a crono folder :
First level of subfolders control the year : 2010 , 2011, 2012 .
Second level of subfolders control the month : 01.2010, 02.2010, 03.2010, 04.2010 , etc
Third  level of subfolders control the day : 12.01.2010 , 13.01.2010, 14.01.2010 , etc.  (for me is usually enough control the month)
This may be configurable....

Mechanic to get : when the scan found a file in the source folder analyze the creation date and copy a shortcut to the year, month , and day specified in the creation date of that file.

In other words. Is an utility organization copy creating in the destination folder the shorcuts of the original files.

might be worth studying these to see if they could be modified (they move the files as opposed to creating shortcuts):

Prime reason all kinds of drugs isn't legalized is not public health issues, it's the cash flow. The corrupt politicians want their bribes, and the police/military/etc wouldn't want their funding cut or lose the ability to play with a lot of fancy toys. The general population would be better off, though, we'd see crime rates drop quite a lot, and organized crime would lose a helluva lot of their cash flow. But it just ain't gonna happen.
reminds me of:
around about 2000(AD :p), crime rates went down a good bit in Dublin; politicians & police were happily claiming credit - but it turned out the reason was a surplus of heroin on the market which reduced prices, thereby reducing mugging quotas per junkie....

Too bad, remember what happened once the alcohol prohibition ended?
eh, no?

^ I had the same problem with Jungle Disk & S3 (account created summer 2008) - unreadable in Cloudberry. Which discovery, combined with a failure of JD -with no warnings- prompted me to start using SFFS to backup directly to S3.
Also I was wary of what the future might be bringing... [edit] (for Jungle Disk/S3) [/edit]

What is SFFS?

sorry about that wraith,
it's such a mouthful of a name: super flexible file synchronizer (http://www.superflexible.com/)
There's a few threads about it here on dc.

[edit] it's really a backup &/or a sync programme (the name is a bit misleading). Here's a screenshot of one of my S3 backups being edited: [/edit]

Living Room / Re: Salaries of Charity CEOs
« Last post by tomos on April 15, 2011, 05:56 AM »
Coincidentally I just came across this today about a charity called "ONE":
ONE has since been forced to remind confused civilians that it is an advocacy organisation and not a grant-making organisation. This became necessary after the New York Post revealed that in 2008, the most recent year for which tax records are available, ONE took $14,993,873 in donations from philanthropists, of which a thrifty $184,732 was distributed to charity. More than $8m was spent on executive and employee salaries.

Who knows, maybe they use the money well...

from an interesting Guardian article: Bono: the celebrity who just keeps giving. (including a very entertaining urban myth in the first paragraph)

I thought that too (as a response) but then I saw the point was that, [of the dope smokers,] it's only the hippies that care about global warming

Food for thought... No privacy on Amazon's cloud drive.

Less so than other cloud storage?

I'll just throw this out there:
Does it really bother you though ? :)

Still on XP - did install SP3 since last use of CH+S.

The thing I don't like about SpiderOak (the software) is that if you try to restore from a backup (after a format, for example), it will copy everything back to the original directory locations and doesn't give you an option to download the content to a different location.

I went and restored a whole bunch of settings etc. and it did ask me whether I wanted them in the original location or a folder of my chosing.

Default is to add it to your Download folder (here it was aimed at My Docs/Downloads, which I've actually never used) but it also allows you to customise the default location. Downloads (restored files) have the correct last-modified-date timestamps.
