There's is the cleansing of a good scream or yell.  But just because it is, doesn't absolve you of responsibility if you direct it at someone else.  I think that's what 40 was objecting to... and I find myself agreeing.

The mere appearance of impropriety is enough to send some scampering back into the shadows as if they were burned by flame.

Exactly.  Especially in this increasingly litigious society.

So, kind of narrowed down to this:

http://myhosting.com/

Did you notice this part:

Multiple State-of-the-art Facilities
Our web servers are housed within Equinix and Earthlink Enterprise Data Centers located in Toronto, Canada and Rochester, NY, USA respectively. Web servers are directly connected to world-class fibre optic networks which ensure that your web site experiences superior performance in a fully-redundant and secure environment.

This is why I didn't make any recommendations; even the company I used to go with that was based out of Australia had datacenters in the US.  If you're concerned enough to be doing this, it seems like this would be a red flag...

Still mulling over a control panel... I don't like the idea of subscription software. I like to pay once and be done with it. So, the Plesk and cPanel pricing just rubs me the wrong way.

If you're paying from hosting from a good provider, that cost of cpanel/whm should be a part of your hosting price- not a separate charge, truthfully.  You can get things a la carte, but if you don't you'll find the cost of a reliable host with/without cpanel not to be much (if any) different- and a lot less painful if you aren't in the know regarding *nix.

If you do want to go the more painful route, we aren't looking at anything like RDP- more like command line stuff.  There's not a desktop OS to any of this stuff AFAIK.  I think your prejudices against subscription software might be making you look at this the wrong way- especially since you're going to be paying for hosting per month in any case.

FWIW, if you're primarily interested in more of a webmail solution (which is probably smarter if it's your server) take a look at Roundcube. I've been evaluating it and it's very impressive.

I have roundcube on my server, and it looked pretty cool, along with horde.  My personal favorite though is squirrelmail for a client.

I think their biggest problem was that they were too open with the wrong information.  If he had not *named* the printer company, I don't think they would have come after him.  It's the *knowingly* part that got him in trouble.

I'm not a Linux person either, but I use CentOS/CPanel/WHM on my VPS and it works well.  My provider uses Virtuozzo for the environment, though I've not really had to have any interaction with that part.

You're sitting at your desk. Someone calls. You raise your phone to see whose calling. They just nabbed your computer screen.

Yep - Boring most of the time, but it's those little, opportune moments that count, and they're probably more common than you'd initially think.

As for the PDF, it gets into some technical stuff that's interesting, but probably not worth the time for most people to read it.

Nope.  They'd get a blank blue screen or my speaker.  At home and at work, when I'm at my computer, my phone is on a stand and I just glance at it and hit the button if I want to answer.

Living Room / Got a Damaged iPhone? You're Not Alone

Damaged iPhones have cost consumers more than $6 billion dollars since the smartphone's introduction in 2007. Smart Money's Quentin Fottrell points out the sleeker iPhone 5 design isn't going to make it any easier to protect your phone.

FWIW: we used GoDaddy for a project I worked on some years, one of the cheaper VPSs since we didn't need much processing muscle. The software control panel wasn't impressive, but covered our needs, and the VM seemed to perform well enough. But the latency to Denmark was pretty bad.

I think the ditch the USA would put that out of the running.  Or else I'd recommend LiquidWeb.  But I don't really know anything about anyone without a US presence.

Right. I just didn't think anyone would want it.

Most people usually like to see context for stuff like this. :)

The official described the type of attack as “not infrequent” and said there were unspecified “mitigation measures in place.”

It isn't as sensational as it seems- not related to actual launch codes, but rather towards the "nuclear football", i.e. the C&C and COG during times of nuclear crisis.

Um...Legos are not an American product even if Lego DK is very careful not to claim to have invented the interlocking toy block it is based on...

If you look at the video on the subject (produced by LEGO), they actually do go into that in exacting detail.  So it's not exactly something that they never say- just not on the site.

What's the difference in those two scenarios?

You make a very good point.

I think it comes down to who we view as the bad guy, bully, cheater, freeloader, or exploiter in any given scenario..

Sometimes it feels like the "original inventor" is abusing the system by suing everyone who has a similar idea -- using their money to scare off reasonable alternatives and making tons of money through legal extortion.

And sometimes it feels like some big company has just walked all over a small inventor and used their influence and marketing dollars and aggression to trample over and bury the original developer.

And I do agree with both of these points.  But laws have to be made to be impartial (the blind lady and all).  Same thing happened/happens with Microsoft vs. the rest of the world.  They do the same things as others, and are held to a different standard.  I can see the thought process behind it, and based on emotions and what I'd like to happen, I'd agree.  But logic tells me that they all have to be treated the same way.

I think it falls into the same category as DRM, Patent, and Copyright to be honest.

Someone makes a phone, and says that no one else can make theirs look anything like that, and sues if someone does.

Someone makes a plastic brick with raised dots, and says that no one else can make theirs look anythinng like that, and sues if someone does.

What's the difference in those two scenarios?

Clear is an app for iOS that has a cool way to add an item.  You put your fingers together over the two items you want to insert the item between, and separate your fingers to create the new item.  Really cool use if NUI.

The reasons for this are consistent and continual revenue.  If you can get someone on the hook for a lower amount- then continue to get them to have to pay to use the service, you have a more consistent revenue stream than with the sale of software.  Everything else is just an excuse.

Thiefw  :-* :-* :-*

How could I forget about that.  That's one series I hope they re-do.  And I hope that Forsaken is good.

Actually, the elder scrolls games can be played as pretty good stealth-focused games too.  It's just that they allow you to play in other ways.

Musicians and groups desperately need venues like The Rat. Too bad there are so few of them left.

+1.  It also takes a special location and environment for places like that to thrive.  That nexus used to be easier to find- but these days, not so much.

Modified because I saw this part of the quote "the club finally closed its doors in 1997 amid a movement toward gentrification."  That's part of a problem, unfortunately.

And one final note on AFP - she's married to Neil Gaiman which is definitely way cool. :)

On January 1, 2010, she stated on her Twitter feed that she "might have told [Neil Gaiman] [she]'d marry him but also might have been drunk."

They went on to get married, then really married later... but that quote is pretty awesome all by itself.

She actually did a video and a set with Wayne Coyne in Boston- and replaced Erykah Badu in his video after that singer's remarks about the first cut (note- don't bite the hand), so yeah... she gets a lot of her influences from that era.  And the album is running #10 on the charts.

I really like the Splinter Cell and Assassin's Creed series- even the latest installations.  The only downside is that its ubisoft, so I have to watch the DRM requirements, and in cases, use the 360 instead b/c of that.  But I'd recommend both if you like the stealth based gameplay.

I'd also recommend going back to the first ones in the Deus Ex series if you haven't.  They still hold up IMO, and the first one is a definite classic.
