Anything they don't have, they make you actually upload. (make sure your collection is properly tagged!)

Unfortunately LaLa will still sometimes match a properly tagged file with something totally unrelated.

I like to listen to video game soundtracks and I had one song with the title simply of "Snow" and LaLa matched it with a song from Snow White. I've had others match with songs that are completely unrelated and have no words or anything in common with the song it was matched to except it is the same track number on the album. :-\

It's kind of frustrating when you go to listen to a song you love and some random stupid garbage track you never heard of and never want to hear starts playing. >:( Though I must admit I have gotten one good song I'd never heard before out of this common mismatching problem.

I e-mailed them about it and they just kind of said "Yeah, it does that sometimes. We're working on improving it but there's nothing you can do now to get the correct song uploaded."

And other times it will match a song to the wrong album. For example, sometimes it will match to a Single or if the artist has the same song on multiple albums, it will match the wrong album.

Am I the only one who thinks MP3 should've died a slow death by now?

It still is dying a slow death.

Plus at only 200"/s tracking speed it's too slow for serious gaming.

You don't need fast tracking speed for WoW or other MMORPGs. These are games where you can suddenly find yourself repositioned halfway across the map because there was a temporary communication error with the server and they didn't realize you'd moved so far. :P

General Software Discussion / Re: Any XP users switching to Windows 7 yet?
« Last post by Deozaan on November 10, 2009, 02:14 AM »
I've switched from XP to Win7 on both my Desktop PC (built in 2005) and my netbook.

I probably shouldn't have put it on my netbook as it can be choppy at times, but it runs well enough, and on my desktop PC it runs great.

I did somehow end up with a BSOD on both my desktop PC and netbook on the same day, but I have no idea what those were about. I actually wasn't using either computer at the time. They were just idling.

Also, why the *frack* have peripheral manufacturers still not made a mouse with a wheel that supports side scrolling

Ehtyar.

What if the mouse had a tracker ball instead of a wheel?! That way would have up/down left/right and could put a button under it.
So ... button | ball | button ... [] ( ) []

-SteveJohnSteele (November 09, 2009, 06:40 PM)

That's how my Kensington SlimBlade Media Mouse is designed. And the ball makes a "clicky" sound as you move it, much like a standard scroll wheel does. You don't feel the click, but you can hear it.

EDIT: I actually have this set: http://us.kensington.com/html/13872.html

EDIT: Oh yeah, regarding the spiders please don't hurt the Huntsmanw spider if you find him in your house, just pick him up on a broom or something and stick him outside.  They're not poisonous and do a good job wandering around eating insects although they do get rather large so you might be surprised by one staring down at you while sitting on the toilet.

You'll also get the shock of your life when you flip down the sun visor in the car and have one drop in your lap  ;D

There's only one rule I have with spiders: If I see one, it dies!

Developer's Corner / Testosterone and Competitive Play
« Last post by Deozaan on November 04, 2009, 01:57 PM »
Danc over at LostGarden has written an interesting article on how competitive games reward or punish different groups of players.

Lately I've been digging into research on testosterone. Over the past decade, scientists have been placing players in competitive situations and then measuring how their testosterone fluctuations predict future behavior. What you find from looking at the studies is that both winners and losers will leave your game if they are placed in a set of predictable situations involving dominance, luck, and friendship.

There are four points that have experimental support:
  • How playing with friends affects the testosterone in winning and losing players
  • How playing with strangers affects the testosterone in winning in losing players
  • How perception of the role of luck or skill in the outcome affects the testosterone of players.
  • How players differ by pro-social or pro-dominance inclination.

Awesome! Thanks for pointing this out, Lashiec! And thanks to App for retweeting this. I never would have known otherwise. (c:

i'm still looking for a cheap/free 3d game engine that will build games on win/mac/linx/wii/ps3/xbox.

Torque Game Builder builds games on Windows, Mac, Wii, and Xbox 360. But you do need to buy a special license for the Wii/Xbox 360 editions.

Who knows what the new Torque 2D and Torque 3D game engines will support.

Great story :)

Also who could ever forget the annoying midi files that ran in the background of so many of those sites

The only thing worse than that was when HTML in e-mail was fairly new and people started doing crazy "stationery" images and midi in the e-mail. )c:

General Software Discussion / Re: 3ds Max...very nice program
« Last post by Deozaan on October 28, 2009, 08:52 PM »
3DS Max is cool, but as 40hz pointed out, very expensive.

For a free alternative, have you taken a look at Blender (also mentioned by 40hz)? Its interface is way different than most CAD-like programs, but once you follow some video tutorials and get a hang for how it works, you can do quite a bit with it.

I suppose that if you're using it for CAD purposes, it may not be suitable for that. I'm not sure since I don't do any design. I've just played around with a few 3D modeling programs for the fun of it.

Living Room / Re: Anybody else playing with Wave?
« Last post by Deozaan on October 17, 2009, 06:04 PM »
Not that I've actually used it yet, but the concept seemed very like twitter in that if you're reading everyone you're following... well, you couldn't... so you need to filter somehow. I'm presuming that that will become possible, if not already?

You don't really "follow" people like you do in Twitter. You're either in the same wave as someone else, or you're not. Think of it as similar to IRC. You don't see every message your friends on IRC make in any channel. You have to be in the same channel as them to see what they're saying.
6922
I just got in a couple days ago and they haven't given me any invites to give out yet.

Do buzz this topic when you can spread the wave :)

Someone just told me that they've been reading information all over the internet about Wave and the general consensus is that if you sign up on the waiting list at http://wave.google.com/ you will eventually be invited by Google and then you will get 8 invites to send out to others.

But if you are one of the lucky people who is invited by someone else, you don't get any invites to send out to others.

So I may not be getting any invites to send out for quite some time.  :(

Almost makes me regret being invited by the good folks here at DC. Almost;)

I'm testing wave as an alternative to onenote.
Group notetaking must be fun!
I invited app and Deozaan. If you give me your nick, I'll add you too. Mine is quesada

I didn't mean to hijack this thread and turn it into a Google Wave thread. DC already has two threads dedicated to Wave.

I'll PM you my details and then I'll shut up about Wave in this thread. :)

I don't know how great of a site this is, but I have family and friends on http://www.goodreads.com/ which is a site that does exactly what this thread is for.

You can list the books you've read, write reviews, put books in your "to-read" list, display which book(s) you're currently reading.

I just signed up on it yesterday, but haven't spent the time to thoroughly go through it yet.

I watched it.  It was amusing... but I just couldn't see the real use for it- perhaps as you said, it's because of the lack of people using it that I know... and a reason to actually use it.  You don't just need people... you need a project.  And a project that isn't bound by standard corporate sensitivity issues...

I agree with you. Unless you have a purpose to use it, it's fun to play with for a while but ultimately you're left scratching your head wondering how it would benefit you right now. But I also see it another way.

When the laser was first invented, nobody knew what to use it for. It was the answer, but nobody knew the question. These days lasers are so widely used it's hard to imagine what the world would be like without them.

I think the Wave will eventually take off once people start wrapping their minds around the possibilities it enables. Not everyone can see it right now. Myself included. I'm one of those kinds of people who often has a hard time imagining new things, but once an idea is expressed to me it's like the floodgates open and ideas/possibilities start to pour in.

Give it some time. It's going to be huge. But for right now it's not even in beta yet. It's in preview.
