General Software Discussion / Re: Returnil Virtual System
« Last post by Curt on June 11, 2007, 05:58 PM »
Thanks a lot for this 'extra' explanation; it helped quite a bit.  :)

The real reason  why I became interested is that I was thinking this technique could make my  Windows respond a lot faster. There is still something basically wrong with this 'new' PC of mine: Whenever I open Explorer (when not already open) it will take at least 20 sometimes even 40 seconds for it to open. I have been very disappointed with such misbehaviour,[Edit: -because it was also slow responding when I got it home and there almost weren't any programs installed-], but in the end I will expect this phenomenon to be a consequence of lack of RAM. And in my mind the need for this deep freezer thingy was born. I am going to get more RAM, 512 MB, but I don't expect XP suddenly to be all fast responding, without any other solution besides more memory. Hence my sudden interest in these "virtual partition" and "Write to RAM" mysteries. I promise that I will get the memory before maybe the program.

Thanks for clearing (some) things up!

I finally found a line telling something on the subject:
Flexibility Options

  • Create a virtual partition on a workstation that can be used to store programs, save files, or make permanent changes

I never understood this talk of a "virtual partition", but suddenly remembered that I have some GB I cannot use because I have asked Windows to set them apart for the System Recovery. Is this the same thing?

Well, my next question must of course be, if the deep freezer then actually is using the same principles as Returnil, Virtual_Partition and Write_To_RAM, or did we just assume this?? They really don't tell.

Just run MSKey and IPConfig; they do not install. I have no tried any of the others, but without knowing I would think it impossible for Outlook Extras and D.A.Clock to do their jobs without writing to the registry, or what?

Yes, Carol, but did you find any DivX movies on the Internet, other than at Stage6 ?
Cause I haven't.

On the Poll:
I feel the DivX community is kind of a closed Stage6 society, so I would vote for both the first and the last option, because the best DivX movies really are impressive, but I don't like closed clubs. Only, I didn't vote at all.

Dear Carol.
I have read your post several times by now, and all I can hear you say is that I really must get that IT mechanic to have a look at my old PC. But Thanks a lot for trying!

I should also clarify that my primary wish is to get my 25GB music, 10GB photos and 3GB e-books off the old Win2K and into my 'new' XP. I really don't care if I ever will get the old 500 MHz machine to work again.

I should add that there is only some 3GB free.

Hmm; I must see if I can get my hands on such a CD. All my PCs were pre-installed and with no disc; I was always too poor  :P

In short: Explorer will crash at every start, also in safe mode, so I can't get into Win2K any "normal" way. The OS was fully updated, so it didn't help to feed it an installation CD, and there is no space or money for upgrading it to XP Pro. W2K cannot upgrade to XP Home.

Guess I am too slow...I can't find anywhere where the offer may be.

Yes, it is gone. Maybe because DivX was updated today:

divx.gif

I think it is cool that we "all" (exept steeladept, obviously) had it on the very last day it was free! Only; if I could pull myself together and find (and pay) a PC mechanic, then I have DivX PRO on the old Win2K machine too. But for now the tower is just standing in corner, laughing at me.

Via MajorGeeks I have found a new interesting freeware site today, toddandkeelee

I forgot to tell the name!: "Todd's Software".

Another of his free apps:

DigiAlarmClock
DigitAlarmClock.gif
A Windows Alarm clock that you can apply skins to and have different types of alarms launched such as MP3s, Audio CDs, DVDs, VCDs, Internet Radio Stations, Text Messages, and Network Messages.  DigitAlarm Clock can connect to a dial-up connection automatically to play an Internet Radio Station.  You can minimize the program to the Windows System Tray to keep it out of your way.  A Snooze button is included that will allow you to set the time desired for the program to Snooze and then launch the alarm again.  Provides help and programs needed to create your own skins.

MISCELLANEOUS SKINS:
Bubbles + Molecules + Boards

WWII-ERA PLANE SKINS:
P-40 Flying Tiger + B-17 Flying Fortress

PS! Save some time and download from Todd's site; it is much faster than going to C/NET

Thanks for the advices, both of you. As I started out; I don't have the tech' insight to be a beta tester on such a product, and I am not going to risk my PC for some mysterious "Virtual Partition solution" that I don't understand. I was merely thinking 'someone' should test these apps and tell us how they perform.

I never leave my PC open for long - on the contrary; I usually restarts several times a day.

Via MajorGeeks I have found a new interesting freeware site today, "toddandkeelee"(!!):

TKBanner-2.jpg

Some of the free stuff:
MSKeyViewer Plus
Keys-Large.gif
A program created to view program installation keys, service pack levels, and product IDs along with detecting many other non-licensed program versions.  Works for most versions of Microsoft Windows, Office, Exchange, SQL Server, Norton AntiVirus 2004-2007, and more!  A complete list of supported programs is included in the About window of the program.
IPConfig Manager
IPCfgManager.gif
IPConfig Manager was created to give users a graphical representation of the DOS command 'IPConfig'.  Most of the command-line features of IPConfig are found in this utility.  The program will display a list of all available network connections and allow you to manipulate them if you have the proper permissions to do so.
This program has been designed to work with Windows 98/Me/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista.  Please note that UAC (User Access Control) restrictions with Windows Vista may prevent this program from running correctly.  A help file is included to give more details on how the program works.
Outlook Extras
OLExtrasLogo.gif
When you open attachments in Outlook such as Word documents, the files are stored in a hidden location and are not removed.  I created this small utility to change the default path so you can easily find and delete them.  If the Outlook Security Patch is installed, many attachment file types are blocked and you are not allowed to open them.  This utility will allow you to unblock the extensions you wish.  Finally, when you create a new .pst file, the default location is normally buried deep within a long list of directories on the computer.  This utility will allow you to change that default path to something like 'My Documents' so that you can find your .pst files more easily.

There are some more to be found at this little fine site: http://www.toddandke...ee.com/software.html

Did you try one, f0dder? Will I risk ruining my PC, or do you think it safe for an IT dummy to handle this stuff?

20% of $35 is okay, I think

I am not at all sure they ever had the private single-user in mind:

A little strange there is no "private user", only this "non-profit".

It is a little hard to figure out, but it seems updates 1) are free, or 2) are called "maintenance". Take a look inside the Buy Now > (find product) > Maintenance Package > "Ouote Generator" (click thumbnail):

It is the year after year price that is offending me.
