The Office Suite applications can be annoying, and especially Excel...

If you open more than 1 spreadsheet in Excel, there are 2 possible ways to do it:

1) You have 1 "instance" of Excel that has 2 spreadsheets open in it.
2) You have 2 "instances" of Excel that each have 1 spreadsheet open.

Those behave differently. You should check that.

The default is #1. You must explicitly open a second instance of Excel for #2.

C# allows dynamic typing, but I'll be damned if I'll use it if I can at all avoid it. (dynamic and var)

It has its place, but those situations are kind of specific.


I would also be interested to know about how they compare in large scale projects.

It is us committing this evil, and we usually justify it by belief in one imagined theoretical construct or another - one religio-political ideology or another. It doesn't really matter which one - any will suffice. We are capable of killing, and will apparently kill other people generally for not accepting our imaginary paradigms or our imaginary ideologies, and in retribution we will kill those who kill us for the same thing.

Regarding:

It doesn't really matter which one - any will suffice.

From Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus:

It's a very Stoic idea. And it rarely happens. Rather, people pull out weapons.

The Nietschean version simply puts those with power in charge to dominate as however they see fit. He also says about faith, "A casual stroll through the lunatic asylum shows that faith does not prove anything."

In the end, any arbitrary morality/value system can be used to justify anything. The only difference between systems is in how easy it is to prove any arbitrary proposition.

Here's a simple proof for this:

* We all have a belief system. (i.e. We all have beliefs.) (Given)
* We all have at least 1 belief that contradicts another of our beliefs. (You can think of many examples here.) (Given)
* All conclusions follow any contradiction. (Reductio Ad Absurdum)

In the end, we can either choose the absurdity of peace or the absurdity of war. The "logical" choice seems obvious to me, but then, I'm just a madman running around blathering like an idiot.

I want to say there are some things for out-of-browser apps that are essentially what you are looking for, but I can't think of anything off the top of my head.  There are out of browser apps that I have seen, but from a developer side....Off to Google....

And the verdict is....

That's where I heard about it!  Silverlight.  That was it's whole point - to be Flash + Adobe AIR but better.  Well in Microsoft's eyes, anyway.  Though I do believe there were some independent confirmations that it was technically better, both in richness and performance.  Unfortunately it looks like they *MAY* be abandoning it by and large.  Still, it may give you another direction to continue your search...

Yeah... There's Silverlight, but what I'm looking to do is have a plug-in for the *browser* and not for the *web page*. i.e. I'm looking to do some web automation and drive web pages directly in the browser.

And no -- this is nothing nefarious. that kind of functionality can lead to the dark side, but I'm basically looking to automate a web browser game -- i.e. Have the bot in the browser. So... I suppose yeah... If you're against bots, then I've switched to the dark side. All Hail Emperor Palpatine~!
