General Software Discussion / Poll: Vulnerability Test (spy attack: SUCCESS!)
« Last post by Curt on June 17, 2007, 05:00 AM »
Reading about safety, first about firewalls, anti-spyware programs and such, and then about virtual partitions, sandboxes and stuff, I came to this page, saying:

Proof Of concept
Don’t CompromiseVirtualize!

Attention: By agreeing to perform the following PC vulnerability test, you will become subject to our “Cyber Attack”. This is only a demonstration and no actual damage will be caused to your PC or network.

We will, however, simulate a malicious file received, for example, via the Web, as an email attachment, from a memory stick, or from any other path by which an executable file can enter your system. We will attempt to prove that none of your security systems will identify or alert you to our intrusion attempt.

Step 1: Run our .exe Vulnerability Test File
As you run our .exe file, we will demonstrate how hackers can do as they like on your PC:

  • A.      Launch your Windows Calculator
  • B.      Abort your Internet Explorer
  • C.      Access several sensitive files (no harm will actually be done), and scan your ‘My
  •       Documents’ folder, where you probably keep your private information.

  • D.      We will then place your sensitive file names (names only!) on our server. During the
  •       process, your firewall may notify you of our demo trying to access the network; this means
  •       that our demo has successfully accessed your system and is trying to report its findings to
  •       our server.

Step 2: View your PC’s Vulnerability Test results
If you allow our Vulnerability Test File to connect to the Internet, you will receive a link that enables you to view your PC’s Vulnerability Test results. As soon as you refresh that Web page, the information we were able to collect from your PC will be immediately and automatically erased from our servers.

(...)

After reading and agreeing to the above, I want to launch the Vulnerability Test File
-Buffer Zone

"I want to launch the Vulnerability Test File". I clicked the link to open the test file, and sure enough: My calculator did open, Explorer crashed, and the name of every file I have in MyDocuments was "published" on the Internet - with the headline "Process communication attack: SUCCESS!" and a last line declaring "spy attack: SUCCESS!"!!

Of course no harm was done.

Suddenly I am even more interested in virtual sandboxes!!

Can you pass the Vulnerability Test from Buffer Zone?? (scroll all down to the last line)
Please first take the test and then come back and Vote and Post.

...  I ... do all my surfing in a sandbox ..

HOW does one do this; surf in a (virtual) sandbox? :tellme:

[Edit: that question was not too smart formulated. I have been told about Virtual Partitions (vp), but I have not yet any understanding of HOW you get the downloaded/installed stuff FROM the vp    TO the not-virtual disk. Am I to install twice? Or is there some kind of button saying KeepThis / DumpThat, or what?

!IMPORTANT! - The AutoMaintenance program only works on the 1280x1024 resolution! A 1024x768 resolution version will be released in the next day or so.
-wreckedcarzz (June 15, 2007, 03:51 PM)

Update: The problems have been resolved and all 3 programs are bug-free. Sorry again for the inconvenience all.
-wreckedcarzz (June 16, 2007, 10:40 PM)

Still resolution limitations?

I ran Wise Registry Cleaner, "Safe"s only, and now one program won't work at all, and another must be started, closed and restarted, before working. Guess the Cleaner is not all that wise?

Also check out Loquendo voices.

You gotta help me out on this one! I believe I have been all over their site, but I cannot find anything to imply that they have a product to offer to the private home user. Have they? I found no voices either.

But the Loquendo site made me realize that TextToSpeach development really is taking place!

Did any of you listen to Heather from Acapella (direct link to .wav file)?
I think she can compete with the best I have heard.

... go to
http://www.neospeech...m/demo/demo_text.php [Internet Explorer only]
and have Miyu [Japanese] read the passage from your post pasted below.

Some years ago I bought a couple of voices, but have not been able to regain them for this new PC of mine. I don't really remember anything about which voices it was, or even from which company - it was VERY seldom I used the program - but I am sure it was not TextAloud. Maybe AT&T NaturalVoices. No, I don't recall.

Wow; that was fun!  ;D

--

Another thing is, have there been any real development in TextToSpeach programs lately? I was sadly surprised listening to all these voices reading. I don't think they have improved much  since my first TextToSpeach program some 3 years ago! Some, but hardly noticeable.

Do take a look at the price tag. Could be OK if you have 5000 staff ...

A dollar per employe?

Thinstall Virtualization Suite for Corporate IT
Pricing starts at $4,995 for the Thinstall Virtualization Suite.

They are not exactly targeting the Home users...

But the tech' sounds to me as Virtual_PC meets Total_Uninstall in a network.. ??

...allow me to ask for your opinion on which voices to buy?

I like Heather from Acapella and Mike from AT&T  best, but I am not impressed with any of the Text_To_Speech programs / voices I have heard so far. Isn't there something better on the market? Or are they maybe just way too expensive?

Can I just rant a little about speach programs that will not cooperate with each other, so you'll have to buy more voices to do the same thing? I have several voices, but they are agent's voices. MSAgent, that is.

But none of the other speach programs will acknowledge the presence of these voices:

I own this program and it rocks.

Listening to TextAloud with the few voices I have installed right now, I realize I will have to buy me some voices (again). Not one of the standard voices are acceptable to me. So please allow me to ask for your opinion on which voices to buy?

General Software Discussion / Re: teracopy: copy your files faster
« Last post by Curt on June 16, 2007, 06:09 AM »
I think vivy made a good point not to forget: If the program is working well, who cares if there is any support? Don't overinterpret my words, please; this is no defense for Codesector - I too was disappointed with DirectFolders, but have not tried the copy thingest.

However: thanks to Giveawayoftheday I have Silent Copy - I guess some will never try it because it is $15, here it is even $20 - but I had it for free. (I like this GOTD site, but of course some offers really doesn't matter.)

When you copy a lot of files the total system performance goes down and use of applications becomes inconvenient. It happens that Windows gives almost all resources of hard drive to the copying process and all applications must be waiting for the end of the action.

Silent Copy allows you to copy your files not diminishing system performance. It moves data and distributes resources of your drives between running applications at the same time. Silent Copy allows you to set a priority to the process and control speed of the copying.
-Silent Copy

I have no intention of benchmarking it; "can't somebody else do it", as Homer would say.

New, small and humble: Vicman`s Web Photo Album 0.9 BETA

Ultimate user friendliness and unmatched usability
We aimed to create a tool that would be equally easy and comfortable for users of all skill levels. The maximum user friendly and intuitive interface with built-in wizard and context-sensitive help makes it fun and easy to create a web gallery, even if you are a first time user.

Smooth and attractive interface
You no longer have to be content with flat and boring user interfaces. Web Photo Album is wrapped in a clean and attractive interface that is pleasing to look at and enjoyable to use.

Drag and drop support
Adding pictures to your album is as simple as dragging and dropping files or folders to the album image list directly from Explorer or your desktop.

The software works in WYSIWYG mode
Web Photo Album is the only photo album generator that displays the result album to you as soon as you’ve added images or edited album theme, etc. In all other photo album software you first have to set all the album parameters and then push the Generate button to see what you’ve got as a result. With Web Photo Album you see how your album looks and feels in real time before it is saved to your hard drive.

Subfolders support
Subfolders support lets you accurately organize heaps of images within one album. So, your album can have the '2007' folder which, in its turn, can contain 'Holiday in Hawaii', 'Samantha's birthday' subfolders, etc. When adding a folder with images and subfolders you will be asked whether you want to keep the folder hierarchy intact. You can also arrange and rearrange images and folders within a created album the way you like it.

Flexibility
A variety of themes lets you choose the most appropriate environment for your photos. You can also personalize your album setting the album title, thumbs and pictures size, etc.

Get it Free!
Web Photo Album is pure freeware. This means you can be sure there will be no nag screens and no expiration dates. Simply enjoy it!

This is not quite a normal image viewer, but it may serve you as a kind of "Favorites/Favourites Viewer".  _  I found a couple of buttons that did not respond - this is still a beta version - which is remarkable since there are so few of them; Web Photo Album is VERY light. But nice!

ContextMenu Commander / Re: ContextMenu Commander
« Last post by Curt on June 13, 2007, 11:40 AM »
don't worry, this program is coming

(....)

i fully expect ContextMenu Commander to be one of our most popular tools.  I'm hoping for release in a month or so.

..
The 2% it didn't do was:
1- Add sub-trees and separators to the context menu
2- Re-order items in the context menu

On my XP the most important feature would (also) be the ability to move items from the main menu to a seperate menu  ("sub-trees")(i.e. "Copy-options ...", "3'rd part app options ...", or whatever), making the menu (menus) shorter; not so tall. Right now I have two entries too much, making the context menu taller than the screen.

Looking at the time stamp in your post, I noticed that it probably was because you were tired and wanted to go to bed, that was the reason for you being "in a hurry" when you wrote this post. Or what?

General Software Discussion / Re: What do you think of PCTools' Spyware Doctor?
« Last post by Curt on June 12, 2007, 12:11 PM »
Yes; it starts incredible slow! But isn't the real-time protection one of the main reasons for having this program? I am not sure how effecient the on-demand scanner in Outpost Pro is, but it is there. If on-demand scanning was the only use I think I would stick to Outpost. I was always using Spyware Doctor as real-time protector.

Do you really need the Doctor if you are only using him on demand? Does it perform this much better than i.e. the free plugin for Outpost?

General Software Discussion / What do you think of PCTools' Spyware Doctor?
« Last post by Curt on June 12, 2007, 11:53 AM »
PCTools are mailing me quite often to have me renew my Spyware Doctor license. The price has gone down to $20, instead of the normal $30. Only; I have been a little annoyed by the program. I think it far too often has been taking up too much CPU at the wrong time, delaying the wrong programs for too long. And once, but only once, it gave me a false positive, luring me to remove a perfectly harmless program. But then again; when it comes to this kind of safeness I very often would like to wear both belt and suspenders
- so what are your thoughts about this Doctor: is he worth a renewal?
 :tellme:

[Edit: I should of course tell that I have Outpost Pro, NOD32, Add-Aware 2007 Plus, and some anti-rootkits!
I am not asking for you to decide for me; I am merely asking: What do you think of Spyware Doctor?]

I used to be a maths teacher ...
-Carol Haynes (June 12, 2007, 11:03 AM)

I did not. In fact, I didn't even show up to the maths classes... But of course, that would explain some part of my misunderstanding. Another part would be the language, I guess. It is no secret that English by far is not my first language. Sometimes I think I have made myself very understable, only to realize I was not understood at all. No, I am not talking about my marriage! (I am a batchelor). Only today I tried this situation: I wrote the (French) author of RegSeeker and explained, no, read for yourself and tell me what you think I wrote:

I thank you for a very fine and free RegSeeker 1.55, and ask of you to make an (installed) upgrade version with Registry Indexing, in order to minimize search-time, please. I use RegSeeker several times a week and are waisting quite a lot of time just waiting.
-Feature Request

The poor guy had no idea what I was talking about. Do you? Anyway; this is not a guessing contest; I am merely pointing out that language can block bridges, and I often don't understand the maths nor the details of the language. But this time I guess it was Zinkernagel's sentence all alone: I didn't think hard enough, if at all...

[Edit: typos, etc]

So of not off.

Nope - $107.85 already includes 20% for the first year of maintenance - that means the $107.85 consists of the software cost of $89.88 and the maintenance of $17.97 (which is 20% of $89.88).

So it is OFF not OF

By default JkDefrag leaves 1% of the first part of your hard disk free, to be used by temporary files.

Got a prompt response from Faronics about maintenance costs for single purchases of DeepFreeze. Here is the response ...:

The cost of our Maintenance package is basically 20% off the total cost of your license. For example, if you buy 1 copy of the Deep Freeze Standard with 1-year maintenance included at $35.95, 20% off that price would be $5.99, which would be the price to pay to renew that maintenance package the following year. If you buy 3 licenses at $107.85 total, the price of the Maintenance Package for all three would be $17.97.
...
-Carol Haynes (June 11, 2007, 03:24 PM)

Yes, it is quite a bummer, she made, so the example becomes very important, quote: "if you buy 3 licenses at $107.85 total, the price of the Maintenance Package for all three would be $17.97".
So of not off.  8)
