- Discover the Droid fonts. They're nice. Along with that, subpixel rendering. Makes every word on the screen crystal clear with a decent monitor.

Am I being daft? I don't see any information on that website about how to get the Droid fonts for linux (or if they're available for Windows that would be cool, too). Do you have to use Chromium OS?

You can spend hours at this site and still not see everything.

I went through the entire catalog. I clicked on everything that looked the least bit interesting (or if I just had to see what it was!). It probably took a little over an hour. They definitely have a lot of weird and useless stuff.

Looks like a place with lots of fun stuff, though it doesn't really fit my sense of humor/taste.

I'm awaiting the unveiling of the mystery box. (c:

I used Eudora back in the '90s. It was my first and only e-mail client (though I did try The Bat! and Thunderbird eventually). It was a time when I felt sorry for anyone who had webmail through hotmail or aol or yahoo.

Now I use Gmail and I feel sorry for anyone who uses a desktop client or webmail from anything else but Gmail.

General Software Discussion / Re: Questions re Windows 7 Starter on a Netbook
« Last post by Deozaan on December 25, 2009, 04:28 AM »
I've been running Windows 7 Ultimate on my MSI Wind U120. I don't believe I've encountered any software that worked on XP that doesn't work on Windows 7. This particular netbook cannot upgrade from 1GB to 2GB of RAM so Win 7 does run a bit slow in a few aspects. I disabled Aero because there was something that would always disable it. I can't remember exactly what it was anymore. Probably a game.

I use AVG (free) for my anti-virus and haven't noticed any problems with that.

Since (AFAIK) netbook hardware is essentially all the same, I would not recommend putting Win 7 on a netbook unless you can get 2GB of RAM, as that might make almost all the difference in the world. Though I suspect, as Josh mentioned, that because of the CPU and GPU limitations there would still be video choppiness in DVDs and higher resolution videos. Though I don't understand how you could watch HD video on a netbook since they're limited to about 1024x600 and HD is 1920x1080.

Sounds great.

I've noticed a trend. You always call it Within a Dark Forest, but it's really called Within a Deep Forest. Even the post you made three years ago you call it a Dark Forest.

That makes it hard to Google. (c:

Anyway, I thought I'd also mention that Nifflas is working on a port of Cave Story to the Wii. It should be great!

Not sure why I never posted in this thread before, but I played Cave Story and loved it, too.

They're making a version of it for the Wii, and I believe Nifflas of "Knytt" and "Within a Deep Forest" and just recently "Saira" fame is helping with the port.

Should be great!

I don't understand how they can make these lists when 2009 isn't even over yet. I know of one game that's coming out on Dec 26th that is high on my radar of games to check out. There's no way it can make the Top of 2009 list because it's not out yet but the list is already made.

They really need to make these lists in February so they have enough time to try out the games that release in November and December.

I used to use Alcohol and PowerISO until I found the freeware Gizmo Central with Gizmo Drive. Now I just use Gizmo Central. I'm running it on Windows 7 right now with no problems.

http://arainia.com/software/gizmo/

Gizmo Central also has a useful Gizmo Hasher which calculates and compares a variety of checksums.

Actually it has more than that, too. Such as a Scripter which I think is kind of like AHK. An Editor, and a database thingy.

I only use Gizmo Drive and Gizmo Hasher, so I can't really comment on the other 3.

DC Gamer Club / Re: Torchlight 50% off until Monday at Steam
« Last post by Deozaan on December 21, 2009, 10:51 PM »
I'm not saying I don't, or won't, like it; I haven't even played it yet. I'm just fishing for reasons to spend money on this game when what is, in my opinion, the best thing about these games, multiplayer, is nowhere to be found.

Diablo 2 is a great game, but the reason why I'm still playing it today is because of the multiplayer. I doubt I would have played it much after completing it nearly ten years ago.

So I'm still wondering if this game is really so great that it compensates for the lack of multiplayer, or if it will be just a good 20 hour game with virtually no replay value.

Torchlight is great fun. If you enjoyed Diablo and Diablo 2 then you will certainly get your money's worth from it.

Diablo 2 is one of my favorite games, but I still only play it with other people. If I ever do play it single player, it's only to work up my character in some way so I can show him off to my friends I play with.

As for online griefers, I never have that problem because I only play with people I know. So I get all the benefits you just described about a limitation of Torchlight while still retaining full benefits of being free to play with other people.

They say there is a multiplayer game coming from the developers of Torchlight, but from what I've read, it's an entirely different game that you would have to buy separately, plus it's an MMO which probably means monthly fees and those pesky griefers.

Torchlight just sounds too much like an extended demo/proof of concept to me with so few characters/classes and other limitations. They even say that the game was made as a framework to base their MMO off of.

I'm sure it's probably fun, but I still haven't seen or heard any reason why I should choose Torchlight from the myriad other Diablo-esque hack'n'slashers out there that feature multiplayer.

EDIT: Grammar and clarification.

however it's single-player only.

Are these kinds of games even fun without multiplayer?

For SMS-length messager services like twitter, it's almost an absolute must, though.

That's what Long URL Please is for.
Replaces short urls with the originals so you can see where links actually link to.

I'm experiencing the same problem. It's nice not to have the focus stolen all the time, but you really should be made aware when you run a program and UAC needs your attention before anything else can be done.

Often I think nothing happened and I go to click the shortcut (or whatever) again only to find out there's a UAC prompt hiding in the task bar.

Maybe it should be Cody who is jumping around?

I'm not sure if you are looking for suggestions, but what if instead of blocks completely dissapearing or appearing after each move, blocks crumbled over the course of a few stages.. so that you had to plan your route to use blocks before they dissapeared.. with new ones appearing only at top of the screen as you move upward.

Those are both really good ideas! And if it's Cody jumping around, then the goal should be a pot of coins or something similar.

« Last post by Deozaan on December 14, 2009, 05:10 PM »
I just thought I'd post to let you know that I updated the initial post. There is now a playable version available for download. If for some reason you cannot unzip the file, it might be useful to know that I used 7-Zip to zip it. I think I used a compression algorithm that other zip programs (including Windows default zip app) would be compatible with.

MOUSER: ScreenShot Captor would only capture a blank screen. So I used Windows 7's Snipping Tool and saved it as a gif, which made the screenshot look like carp because of the dithering.

I just thought I'd mention that the current graphics are all temporary/programmer's art and will likely be replaced by other things. After all, it makes no sense for a tree to be jumping around. But I thought I'd explain that in the top left part of the screenshot is a block with a yellow circle in the middle. That's the goal you're trying to reach.

HELP NEEDED: I could use some graphics. I basically only need 4 or 5 images and they can be pretty simple, probably 64x64 at the largest for all except the background image:

  • Ground Tile: Right now this is the grass you stand on at the start (bottom) of the level.
  • Platform Tile: Right now these are the green blocks with brown outlines/cracks in them. There are 3 now for variation, but I really only need 1.
  • Player Image: Right now this is a tree. I'd like it to be a person or creature that would make sense to have jumping/hopping around.
  • Goal Tile: Right now this is the green block with a yellow circle in the middle. I'd like it to be something that signifies an exit or goal. Something that stands out from the platform blocks.
  • Background Image: This may be the hardest image to make, because I would like it to be very tall so that as the player climbs, the image will progress from sky and clouds etc., to maybe darkness and space and stars and galaxies, etc.
