Living Room / Re: Looking at Cameras
« Last post by tomos on July 01, 2011, 06:48 AM »
The Sony NEX-3 seems to have the best image quality/ high iso performance of any non-SLR camera, matching some SLRs which have much bigger sensors ... Also there's not much choice in lenses till next year. I guess that's why it's selling so cheaply..

You can get an adapter to allow you to use any A Mount lens. You get AF, but most A mount lenses don't have image stabilisation (A mount DSLRs have it in camera). Of course, the adapter itself isn't cheap. :(

I mainly just looked at kit lenses cause I dont want to spend a fortune either...
Another advantage of the Olypmus models though, is that they use the same lens system as Panasonic compact system cameras -so the lenses are interchangeable- so there's more choice there too...

Forgot to comment about video - the Sony NEX cameras are also aimed at making good videos - but there is also a video camera that uses the same lenses as the NEX cameras:

Been looking at cameras, my old trusty 5MP Olympus C5060 died a death lately.

Thought I'd share :-) based on my notes:
PS I'm a total amateur so feel free to correct or advise ;)
All links are from http://www.imaging-resource.com

First, I wanted a small camera with a good lens -
  • reasonably sharp into the corners of image
  • preferably with low chromatic abberation (the colour fringes you often get, especially in high contrast areas towards edge of image)

I wanted to be able to photograph in low light, so either
  • a "fast" lens (i.e. with low aperature number, e.g. 2.0) or
  • a camera that makes good quality images at high iso

Of the compact cameras I only found the Olympus XZ-1 has a good sharp lens. I considered it, but it's around €400 and I saw that I could get a compact system camera from Sony for the same price. (Compact system cameras have larger sensors and exchangable lenses, but have no mirror in the camera so are a lot smaller than SLRs.)

The Sony NEX-3 seems to have the best image quality/ high iso performance of any non-SLR camera, matching some SLRs which have much bigger sensors. (There is a newer version, NEX-C3.) It's very small; lenses are not as small as some other makes. Problem is the kit-lens is not so good. Also there's not much choice in lenses till next year. I guess that's why it's selling so cheaply..

Then comes my favourite, the Olympus PEN E-PL2. Good kit-lens (14-42 = 28-84mm equivalent) which is collapsable, so especially small when not in use. Costs under €500 new here, but you can get it with two lenses for €582.

I really wanted to try it out but havent yet had a chance to go to an actual shop. Anyways I was thrown by the announcement yesterday of three new cameras in the same line:

All are supposed to have super-fast auto-focus.
Hum-di-dum.
Think I'll wait a bit and see what the first two are priced at (not yet announced).

There are other compact system cameras but image quality didnt get good reviews.

Finally, have a look at the Pentax Q - will be available in September - definitely the smallest compact system camera around, but also with a very small sensor so image quality will suffer.
But, (with apologies) it's soooo cute . . .

just to confirm it's not working with FF5 on xp - the redbox doesnt show at all (does on other apps).

But I can do a regular screenshot (Active window) of FF5 and it shows everything in the window.

Ooh, got another donation for KyrCrypt via PayPal.  $2.00.  Yee-haw!!

are you getting disillusioned kyrathaba? (I'm presuming that's ironic...)
I know getting donations is -apart from the money at all- it's a nice way of getting thanked for doing/making something.

I usually donate to dc people who make software that i use. I'm afraid I'm not so good with software from other sites.

The other side of the coin is that I guess you dont really want to be in this here for the money - or if you are interested in that aspect you'd certainly have to, eh, [... insert creative business approach here].

(I'm no coder, but I did put a huge amount of work into a nany project last year - of course, for me, nany was a great opportunity, as I got a huge amount of help through it. That project was not a "success", but I dont feel I wasted my time, I learned a lot and have new ideas through it.)

[edit] with apologies if this is superfluous. I overlapped with your last post. [/edit]

I've consistenly used hibernate on two computers for about 8 years now ;-)
I had minor related problems on both - sleep didnt work well on the first - cant remember if I even tried that on the second; but did have problems on the second with a dodgy soundcard (I think) driver - it worked okay after a driver reinstall anyways (- it's at least two years ago, my memory doesnt bother remembering the details at that stage).

ironically, after 8 years of successful hibernating (XP SP3), hibernation broke here last week
I think it was after the last round of windows updates on the 16th - or it could possibly be related to a couple of update in other programmes the previous week.

A speed wave is a gamification of speedtest.net where a bunch of people test their speeds and it compares them and you get "badges" for being fastest or having the biggest improvement, etc. Let's all try out the DC Speed wave I created!

Yeah, it would be interesting to hear how other office software compares.

I use Softmaker but normally only minimally.
I did try using the 2008 version to do a sample layout of a chapter of a book (!) - double-column, lots of illustrations. I did run  into a few bugs with the combination of full-page-width illustrations with the double-column text - but, in fairness, no office word processing program is really designed for that.
Didnt have any problems with text formatting though :-\

I think it's just that it's so active here - I've ofen seen (& reported) spammy posts, even if I dont report they seem to get removed pretty quickly.

I thought this (ways of avoiding spam) was discussed here lately but could only find this about "StopForumSpam"

StopForumSpam works, and is a very useful service

@40hz,
maybe we're just dull too ;-)
6815
I only have experience with a couple:

dopdf is nice and easy to use but often fails (distorts) if vector graphics involved and it's not clear what settings are used (free version).
PDFCreator makes a very good pdf, lots of control over fonts and compression, can handle vector graphics, but options interface is a bit odd (I've gotten used to it though).

I had to laugh at a comment he uses a couple of times (cause it seems a bit meaningless):
"Interface a bit dull :)"

« Last post by tomos on June 15, 2011, 02:39 PM »
"Set the aperture two f-stops down from whatever is the maximum on the lens you're using - and hold it steady."

That's decent advice.  Most SLR's are sharpest at that aperture.

I didnt know that
at some point though (especially if you dont like using flash and it's a getting dark...) you're going to have to trade off - either open up the aperature more (reduce the aperature number = softer pic), or raise the iso ('noisier' pic). But if you have an slr, these things really dont matter so much (especially if you're only figuring out know how to use it :p)

I found this explanation helpful too - similar to your description sj, but not quite so quick-n-dirty ;-)

RAID for dummies?

The point of RAID is to either make your data access faster, make your data more failure-proof, or both.

The entire point of RAID 1 is data redundancy. While yes, RAID 1 does effectively give you half the storage space of the drives used, if one drive dies, your data is still intact on the second drive. Thus, if you have a hard drive die, it's not so big of a deal. You can just replace the dead drive, and go on with whatever you were doing.

If, however, you're willing to run the risk of a dying hard drive, there are other RAID options with more storage space. RAID 0, for instance, chops all the files you store on the array into little bits, and puts every other bit in each hard drive. Thus, you get the full capacity of both drives, and a speed increase, because you're writing two files to two hard drives, and each file is half the size of the one big one you saved. However, should a hard drive in a RAID 0 array fail, all the data in the array is lost. There's really nothing that can be done.

There are also more complex RAID options, to give both more speed and redundancy. My personal favorite is RAID 5, which uses one drive for redundancy, so out of a three-disk array, you get the storage space of two of the three disks.
