I've decided to stop posting articles about data leaks and breaches except in exceptional cases from now onward as there are just too many of them.

I'm with you, though I do think the recent hacking of the Virginia health database (& subsequent ransom demands!) is especially reprehensible and worth a mention.

I wonder if Acronis' "convert backup to virtual disk" functionality is already compatible with the new VM. If would be awesome if we could just shift the whole install to a VM on Windows 7 and take our time shifting stuff to the native OS.

He's also having problems with Ghostery, this guy obviously believes in taking a proactive approach. :)
Ghostery Watches the Web Sites that are Watching You. Find out how web sites are watching you across every page on the web with Ghostery. Ghostery alerts you when you visit a web site that has web bugs on it. Web bugs are hidden scripts that track your behavior and are used by the sites you visit to understand their own audience.

From the Ghostery site:
Attention all NoScript users

Tonight I learned from Mark Pilgrim that the NoScript Firefox extension is arbitrarily blocking Ghostery’s notification window. This is the window that notifies you about which web bugs were found on the current page. NoScript is doing this without their user’s consent and without the option to turn off this behavior.
http://news.ghostery...n-all-noscript-users

Edit: Seems it's the NoScript site (not the extension) that's disabling Ghostery - read the comments to the Ghostery post.

OK, time to flame Brandon!!

For the technology portion: More security, tighter security, and more laws won't stop people. Only people will stop people. And people won't stop until they can afford their usual real life luxuries, plus their virtual ones, with money to spare. And that doesn't look like it is going to be anytime soon.

Well said! And thank you for not being a hypocrite.  Hope you can hold on to that when you get to the "ethical" side of the age divide.

You mention saving desktop space so I assume you're talking about launching programs that aren't already running from a popup menu.

If so, Windows does what you need by itself - no 3rd party apps necessary.
Create a folder anywhere on your system - add a bunch of shortcuts (apps, folders, docs, whatever) to the folder.

Right click the task bar, Toolbars -> New Toolbar and browse to the shortcut folder.

What's the Best? / Re: Video Splitter: What's the best AND easiest?

I just can't get over the fact that almost all these software houses have two separate products - one for splitting and one for joining, I'd have thought they're two sides of the same coin!

They get away with broken bones _if_ they're lucky.  :D

Here's the kicker - some of these pots that they try to get to and break are tied to power lines... would make one heck of a YouTube video if something were to go wrong - can you imagine a 1000 guys getting zapped at the same time?

LOL - seems like a fun afternoon!

BTW, the Indians have taken this sport to the cutting edge - we get to witness the insanity every year as part of a Hindu festival.

I don't think I like the idea of karma and voting or anything that creates 'elitism' or divides members in any way.

That coming from a DC Server Admin Charter Honorary Member!  ;D
j/k  :P

I'm not in favour of elitism either but if there were to be some, I'd rather it be based on cerebral contributions rather than monetary ones. *ducks*

My bad. I thought you were referring to the site being discussed. Sorry about the confusion.
693
AFAIK, the server you connect to knows your IP (from the HTTP header) whether the site has any graphics or not. :) The pixel hack would only come into play for email or if a third party wanted to monitor a site s/he didn't manage - eg: monitoring a forum's activity by inserting an image hosted on your own site into a post or sig.

The email address might be got using the cached auto-fill info.

Jimdoria,
From a purely technical POV, are you saying that it's not possible to get the info startpanic gathers using JS, unless a user actively triggers off the process by clicking a button? Isn't JS loaded & run automatically with a page unless you're blocking it?

Edit:
Spyjax - Your browser history is not private!
http://www.merchanto...kebeta/tools/spyjax/
694
Reminds me of those graphic buttons people used in their sigs back in the days when a lot of people used Netscape for everything, web, mail, news.
You press the button and it tells you your email address, ip address etc..

Yes, but doesn't the server have access to that info in those cases? If a script can be run to dynamically generate info and display it for the user, can't it also relay it back to the server?

PS: The site also offers to check a friend's  :) history and tell you about it. I sent it to myself & ran the script and sure enough it sent me a link to the (already generated) results.

PPS: I could be way off the mark but I _think_ it's done using this hack.

695
I installed it - then got annoyed with the extra housekeeping involved - and uninstalled it. hh.gif

Start Panic! is a site that shows you your browsing history. It won't be a great revelation for the real tech-heads on board but was quite an eye-opener for me. The site seems to do what it does using JavaScript - I'm off to take a serious look at NoScript:)

I finally read through the article, well... 90% of it. His take on the social aspect of this issue seems very self-serving and I took it with a fistful of salt (sorry, couldn't resist commenting. :p) - but the tech bits were fascinating.

Thanks for a very interesting read, Ehtyar.
