Can we get this discussion back on track?

The very fact that a position I am suggesting is mocked and ridiculed demonstrates (quite admirably) the callous disregard for others that are not as "adult" as many who are commenting.

Maybe I am a hold-over from a different time, but I can't quantify worth based on numbers.  Yes, yes, I know, the whole world is obsessed with ROI nowadays.  :(

Is it a valid evaluation to say that "so few" would be served?

What if a __________ system was implemented and those who desired to use it, started to do so and those who weren't interested weren't even aware it is in effect because the integration is seamless?

How do we, who are so diverse, even to determine what standard could/should be used? :tellme:

No one is speaking as the majority, but given the PMs I have received since the beginning of this thread, I can tell you there is at least a silent minority.  My whole point is I would like to explore (as we all are doing) how some "device" could be utilized to expand the hospitality available here.  No one is saying it is bad, but only the arrogant would say there is no room for improvement.

FYI - For things of interest about DC when I'm away, I send "myself" a PM so I don't forget.  Of course, I know you knew that.  I just mentioned it for the benefit of others.

I should subtitle this thread... "The MONSTER THREAD that would not die! :)"

@Zaine - The truth is that I failed to edit that letter to mouser properly before presenting it on the thread.  I was musing some personal thoughts.  Have you ever mused your thoughts like that before posting the final, edited version?  In short, a lot of the content of that letter should have remained private.  My bad, but as I was the only one taking the heat and it gave folks some window on who I am, I chose to let it ride, but I NEVER expected the maelstrom it provoked. :o  Oddly, as a Navy man, corporate employee and a truck driver for the last 30 years, I have had these types of discussions before with numerous people from all walks, but did not receive the kinds of tones and suggestions that this thread produced.  Perhaps it was the non-verbal communications that helped those interchanges?  On the boards we don't have that benefit, except via smileys, but that can't compare to one-on-one dialog.  I would be happy to dialog your thoughts via PM.  Contact me if interested, but please see below....

@Tekzel - No offense taken, but see below, too...  :)

For any other passers-by...

As mouser stated above, this thread is just about threadbare (pun fully intended ;)) and the discussion on "Tagging" has been moved to this thread.  Over there it appears that Tinjaw has chosen to offer some oversight to that project and I would invite anyone to follow the thread and offer him some feedback.  If anyone has questions that are more focused on CodeTRUCKER (myself) rather than the subject matter of this thread, please feel free to Private Message me direct.  I have already been involved with some dialogs with other members that have done so.

I took a look at Chris' (Veign) test case.  Simple clear and doesn't add any noticeble "noise" to the experience.  Give it a test-drive!

It always takes a good bit of work to get something done, even cleaning up a mess.  My interest is controversial, obviously, but I think Cody's reputation outside of DC could improved.  I really do care about this place as more than a place to spend time.

Why does attempting to make things more hospitable to others besides ourselves constitute a "mess?"

I wish to make a point that you are contradicting yourself and you have done so more than this particular example.

I dispute that. Reread what I said:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I can only read this and your constant return to such statements as a belief that
...
I'm convinced that you really do believe ...

In one place I specifically ask for clarification, which you declined to do. In the second case I did not attempt to assert my opinion as fact, but explicitly framed it as my own belief, creating an opening for any refutation from you.

Look, enough is enough.  If you have a beef with me then PM me *IF* you are really interested in a an honest dialog.  Per Mouser's post and mine this thread is closed and I personally wouldn't object to the moderators locking it.

I would be interested in attempting to explore a tagging system that could make DC more palatable to those who might find some of the raw discussions here an unpleasant experience.  I am not attempting to censor what is said, but only to provide sign posts to any that may have a preference to not expose themselves to some questionable verbiage.

Mouser, several posts back, stated he'd like to see this thread examine the tagging issue and outside of our little cocoon here, there really is a real world with real consequences both in the workplace and politically oppressive and potentially fatal consequences for even reading a website.  China allowed Google to come in on the condition that the government be given access to all records and Google's technology.  Carol raised another example of a similar issue, so this is important.  Given this, does not the high road lead us to place some limits on our "rights?"

In order to put, this thread back on track, can everyone please chime in again with a concise synopsis of your views?  No need to expound on why , just a quick blurb on what you recommend.

I lean toward a voluntary pull-down menu that could either be color-coded for white-to-red, or an intellegent list of "NSFW"-type tags. (where and how to be decided later, if this is the chosen format)

EDIT - Mouser beat me to it!  Anyway to take attention off this thread and open the conversation up for "Tagging,"  I've started a New Thread.

@CWuestefeld - In regard to my heart, you seem to believe that you can see into the hears of other people to divine what they're thinking, what their motivations are. This is never a safe assumption. You have no way of knowing why each of us chooses to voice the views that they do. I suggest that the only civil way of handling such a discussion is to make every effort to avoid assuming the thoughts of another; if something seems to flow from illegitimate sources as you list above, ask the person for clarification.

Ok, I plagiarized your words, but I wish to make a point that you are contradicting yourself and you have done so more than this particular example.  Due to the contradictions, I really can't find anything (any concrete action steps) that I can apply to make things any different (better) or even more comfortable for you here, except "keep my offensive ideas to..." myself! (Your quote).

Next time be kind and use a For-Next, will ya!

OK, I'm dim - what's a For-Next?
Darwin, I'm not sure my humor came off right.  Man, it is bad when one has to explain what one thought was humorous  :-[
What I was trying to pull off was if you read your post I referenced there is a link that takes you up a few posts to Mouser's post.  Ok I go back and read Mouser's post and then read down to your post with the link back to Mouser's post then read back down to your post which takes me back to Mousers, etc.  Get it?(nudge-nudge) it becomes an indefinite or recursive loop which theoretically will never let you out.  So I was quipping that your post put me in that recursive loop.  I was feigning fuming at you (but maybe it was the wrong smiley :().

A For-Next is a loop, generally in the form...

For i = 1 to 10 i++
     <Do something>
Next i

This is not a recursive or indefinite loop because the value of i istarts at "1" and can only increment to 10 and the i++ means recurse <Do something> 10 times in a row and then drop out of the loop.

The idea was kind of poking fun saying "Hey, next time you put me in a loop make it a loop that I can get out of, i.e., a non-recursive loop like a For-Next.  Sort of a kind of old vaudeville gag like Abbot and Costello type routines.

The whole thing was just to make you smile. Sorry for the question marks.  :)
