So far, Gary Beene's product has been the most useful

I assume you mean http://www.garybeene...om/sw/gbsnippets.htm

I'll have to look at that sometime - the description makes it sound like it's intended for the PowerBASIC IDE, but maybe it'll work well via the clipboard with other programs, too?

I'll tell you what though... I'm most fascinated by the encyclopedic information on Pepsi he has on his website.

Tried Qsnipps a while back.  At that time, I was underwhelmed .

Yes.  I've played around with it a bit now, and it doesn't seem to be quite finished.  There's no doubt that the documentation leaves a lot to be desired.  However, the author is responsive to bug reports and suggestions - at least discussing them via email.  It remains to be seen if those discussions turn into action.

I think the application shows some promise.  Since I have to do some work in the Linux world, I like the multi-platform story.  I hope the rough edges can be worked off sooner rather than later or never.

One (1) of the features touted was the ability to create a shell/DOS command:
~~~~~ start paste ~~~~~
Run Shell/DOS commands
Do you use the Console/DOS prompt often? Save your commands as ShellApps and run them directly from QSnipps.
~~~~~  end paste  ~~~~~

However, I could not find a way to perform that particular feat of legerdemain  :(.

As best that I can tell, when you've selected a "ShellApp" script in the main window, a ">" button shows up on the bar above the display of the snippet contents.  Pressing that button will execute the script. the feature seems a bit incomplete:

  - I'd expect that double-clicking on the entry in the snippet list would execute the script, but it doesn't seem to
  - the output from console programs simply goes to a bitbucket somewhere
  - errors (like a bad program name) go unreported

I'm sure there are more. To make this feature usable would require quite a bit of work on the details, I think. Or at the very least clear documentation on how it works so people have a hope of understanding what can and cannot be done.  All that said, this isn't a feature I'm interested in at the moment, so I'm not too worried about it.

I've tried Snip-It Pro in the past, and it was a nicely featured program, but a program like this needs to be light on it's feet, and Snip-It Pro seemed a bit too heavyweight (I think it's a .Net program and that may be part of the story there). My recollection was that Snip-It Pro also hd some issues with multi-monitor setups.  Maintenance/development of Snip-It Pro has stopped or at least slowed to a crawl.

In the meantime, I live with a random collection of files. That has the benefit of being free, portable, and cross platform (more or less - line ending problems sometimes piss me off, but it's actually less of a problem than I would have guessed).

For those looking for a snippet library manager, it might be worth looking at QSnipps since it will be offered for free on BDJ sometime in the near future:

It supports Windows, Mac and Linux and can pull snippets from a snipplr account.  It can't can't push new snippets to snipplr as far as I can tell, but I'm not sure if that's a limitation of the snipplr API or not (can other snippet managers do it?).

If anyone is familiar with the program, I'd appreciate comments on how it might compare with others.

In case anyone who missed the latest BDJ special can't wait for the next one (assuming there will be one), it looks like HippoEDIT has a standing 25% off deal on BDJ: http://www.bitsdujou.../software/hippoedit/

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: WinOne for $US4.95 (regular $US15.00 )
« Last post by mwb1100 on May 21, 2012, 04:22 PM »
Does anyone have experience with this?  I'm actually not too interested in an extended batch language - as bad as cmd.exe is it has the advantage of being on every single Windows machine I come across.

However, the debugger in WinOne, http://www.winone.com.au/debugging.html, looks very interesting if it can debug regular cmd.exe scripts. I don't care if the script/batch file is running under WinOne instead of cmd.exe when debugging, as long as WinOne is compatible enough that I can expect mostly the same behavior.

A decent cmd.exe debugger for $5 would be well worthwhile.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure I'll have the opportunity to try this out over the next couple of weeks, except for maybe a few minutes tonight. If anyone has used WinOne (and especially the debugger), I'd appreciate a post with some thoughts on the experience.

It might be worth a $5 gamble, even if I only get to install and verify that it doesn't just fall over right off the bat.  Then again, even if I miss the $5 special, if the debugger would actually work for what I'd like to do, $15 is probably still worth it.

The deal is no longer there for me now (21 May)  :(.  In fact, the bundle is more than buying the games separately according to their chart that tells you how great a deal the bundle is:

Total Individual Price: $68.85
Bundle Price: $94.95

Sorry, I think I was a little confused about what you really wanted.   But, I think I found what you're looking for:

Convert Win7 Ultimate to Pro or Home Premium

Here’s the crux of the matter: If you put a DVD containing Win7 Ultimate in your PC and run the installer — either by booting from the disc or running the setup program from inside Windows — you end up with Win7 Ultimate. No surprises there.

However, if you first delete a tiny file named ei.cfg before making the installation DVD, the Win7 installer will give you the choices shown in Figure 1.

...

In fact, no matter which Win7 installation DVD you have — Ultimate, Pro, or Premium — if you delete the ei.cfg file from the disc, you’ll be offered the same choices and can install any version of Windows 7.

As I understand it, the "downgrade" is an entitlement that Microsoft gives to people who have licensed Windows 7 - you just install the downgrade version of Windows that you want (you still need to have a key for that version) and you install it.  If it doesn't activate, you call Microsoft and they'll give the activation code over the phone because the downgrade option makes it legit. It appears that you can downgrade using an OEM key for the older OS too, which normally isn't permitted to be installed on a different machine (but I might be mistaken about that).

I need to get a setup like this for work - not because I'm doing anything I don't want anyone to see, but because I think it'll look cool to be working away on a completely blank monitor.

Way cool.

Especially if you combine it with a blank DasKeyboard:

Nice, so instead of informing the public about the exploit ...So they could get it fixed properly... The Feds decide to perpetuate it (by piping it through their own servers) for what exactly?? Sounds to me like a bunch of folks just got hacked once and then sold off for chattel by their "rescuers".
I don't think that's the way I'd describe what happened.

  -  They have informed the public (whether they've done so effectively might be debatable).

  -  The replacements for the rogue DNS servers were set up so people who were exploited could continue using the internet.  I think another reason was to give time for Microsoft, ISPs and anti-malware vendors to get fixes through to their users. I'd hope that that was being done, but don't know if it was. Nobody could force them to do so.

I suppose there could be additional nefarious purposes, but I don't think there is. And if there were, on July 9 it goes away so at least there's a time limit on it.

I'd not heard of this... anyone else hear anything about it?

I just read about this in the local paper a couple days ago,and at first I thought the paper had been fooled by a hoax story.  But it's legit (the FBI link you gave has a really good explanation).

The tl;dr version:

  - criminals used malware to change the DNS settings on computers to point to their own DNS servers.  At that point that crime ring effectively controlled what your computer connected to on the Internet.
  - the FBI (or other law enforcement) took down the crime ring, and replaced the rogue DNS servers with 'legit' ones
  - the FBI will stop running those 'legit' DNS servers on July 9, so if your computer was compromised, it won't work very well on the Internet after that

As far as I can tell, the source of the idea that this professor advocates "pharmacological or psychological treatment" for people who deny global warming comes from press statement about the talk at the conference.  According to http://wattsupwithth...gon-press-statement/, that statement said:

Resistance at individual and societal levels must be recognized and treated before real action can be taken to effectively address threats facing the planet from human-caused contributions to climate change.

(note: the words "and treated" have been removed from the uoregon.edu page, presumably due to the events that started this thread).

I think it's a stretch to read that sentence as meaning the professor advocates a Soviet-style reeducation gulag for climate change skeptics.  Even if you disagree with what the professor actually does say.

In case anyone cares, I'd read that sentence as meaning something more like "... must be recognized and dealt with before real action can be taken..." rather than "... must be recognized and treated with drugs and psychotherapy  before real action can be taken..."

Update: Here's a story in the Eugene, Oregon Register-Guard newspaper about this incident: http://www.registerg....html.csp?print=true

General Software Discussion / Re: HowTo open Explorer with admin rights?
« Last post by mwb1100 on April 10, 2012, 12:36 PM »
This page has a pretty good explanation of the 'legacy redirect' folders such as "C:\Documents and Settings":

However, what I've never had adequately explained to me is why Microsoft doesn't make it so that when you double-click on one of those "legacy link" folders, Explorer doesn't just 'follow the link' and open the target folder.  While that might be somewhat confusing to some people, I think it would be vastly less confusing than the "access denied" error, as well as infinitely more useful.

Here's an article that attempts to explain why Explorer won't - or can't - follow the link (it also gives more detail on why these things exist):

However, I remain unconvinced that Microsoft couldn't come up with better behavior.  Even if you might not want arbitrary applications to list the contents of those special folders, I think that some scheme could have been devised that would allow Explorer to be smarter about them.

One last edit: XYplorer follows these links just as I think it should.  I'd think there's a good chance that other 3rd party file managers might as well.

I see what this woman has written as offensive and stupid.

I couldn't find the paper - all I found was an abstract, a brief announcement about the paper, and the characterizations of what the paper said in the infowars.com and prisonplanet articles/videos.

And quite frankly, after reading the abstract I'm quite sure I'd have a hard time slogging thorough the paper, so I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to read it.

I'm also more than a little skeptical of the description by the infowars.com/prisonplanet articles and videos.

This video has been removed as a violation of YouTube's policy
prohibiting content designed to harass, bully or threaten

Dunno what google are thinking - **
I presume they were put under (a lot of?) pressure to remove this, but even so, what kind of response did they expect...

So, in other words, they were politically motivated to remove the video... Which is even worse. (I'm glad you pointed that out as I didn't want to, but rather leave it for someone else to notice.)

I would have guessed that rather than a lot of pressure, all it might have required was a request by the professor herself.

I imagine that youtube probably doesn't consider her a public figure in the same way that a politician or 'celebrity' is.  And I wouldn't be surprised if youtube more or less takes the word of the claimed 'harrassee' when they make such a complaint. I also think that would be a pretty reasonable policy.

Of course, I'm just speculating.

Have you tried these suggestions from the HTTrack FAQ:

Q: I can not access several pages (access forbidden, or redirect to another location), but I can with my browser, what's going on?
A: You may need cookies! Cookies are specific data (for example, your username or password) that are sent to your browser once you have logged in certain sites so that you only have to log-in once. For example, after having entered your username in a website, you can view pages and articles, and the next time you will go to this site, you will not have to re-enter your username/password.
To "merge" your personnal cookies to an HTTrack project, just copy the cookies.txt file from your Netscape folder (or the cookies located into the Temporary Internet Files folder for IE) into your project folder (or even the HTTrack folder)

Q: Can HTTrack perform form-based authentication?
A: Yes. See the URL capture abilities (--catchurl for command-line release, or in the WinHTTrack interface)

Q: Can I use username/password authentication on a site?
A: Yes. Use user:password@your_url (example: http://foo:[email protected]/private/mybox.html)
