Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Zoom Player - the all-in-one media player!
« Last post by KenR on September 15, 2006, 05:33 PM »
okay, i was getting a little excited there. KMPlayer still has the most power/options that i can see - things like being able to capture 'live' what you are watching and save out to another video file - i've not seen that done with any other player.
If something is better than Zoom Player, I want to see it. Are you saying that it just has that one unique option, or is a better player overall?

Living Room / Dana Hanna (Software Jedi) plans to write 30 programs in 30 days
« Last post by KenR on September 13, 2006, 06:43 PM »
I plan on writing 30 applications in 30 days. That's one per day... I haven't started yet, but keep watching here for more info.

The whole idea started as a dicussion on a plane ride. I was flying back from Houston with a fellow developer talking about web ideas... This idea hit me. I started jotting down application ideas on a paper napkin (which is now sitting next to my desk). I'll divulge some of those ideas in the future.

I BEG you to submit ideas for me. Don't tell me to write a friggin MMORPG or some crap like that. Serious ideas that are possible to do in one night. Write me at [email protected]! Once I get started I'll flush out the ideas I have on this napkin within a week or two.

What's the Best? / Re: Newsreader programs
« Last post by KenR on September 13, 2006, 03:04 PM »
I am always looking at newsreaders. I've yet to find the perfect one. I used Microplanet Gravity for a few years, but it went under several years ago. I am also using Agent (see image) and generally find it to be pretty able. I am not and never have had your problem with it being slow. It sounds like you have too much information in your database. Maybe uninstalling and doing a fresh install would help.

Living Room / SmartPox.com: linking the online world to the offline one
« Last post by KenR on September 12, 2006, 05:40 AM »
Smartpox.com is an interesting crossover between the online and offline worlds. The technology allows users to encode URL links, phone numbers, email, and text into 2D barcodes. These codes can then be read using a cameraphone running the J2ME Smartpox reader. So a Smartpox is essentially a 2-dimensional barcode, which contains data that can be decoded using the Smartpox reader in a mobile phone.

The goal of Smartpox is to be a "viral messaging" application, allowing people to link their online world with the offline world....

Results and Conclusions

So between the last page and what's about to come, there has been hours of gruelling testing going on. Believe me when I say that 8 hours of watching a virtual machine restart is not my idea of fun, but I think the results justify the means.

Developer's Corner / Don't get screwed by C
« Last post by KenR on September 09, 2006, 10:37 PM »
The image (see below) says it all...

To get on this list, a bug has to be able to cause at least half a day of futile head scratching, and has to be aggravated by the poor design of the "C" language.  In the interests of equal time, and to see how the world has progressed in the 20-odd years since "C" escaped from its spawning ground, see my Top 10 Ways to be Screwed by the Java programming language, and for more general ways to wase a lot of time due to bad software, try my Adventures in Hell page.

A better language would allow fallible programmers to be more productive. Infallible programmers, of the type unix' and "C" designers anticipated, need read no further.  In fairness, I have to admit that the writers of compilers have improved on the situation in recent years, by detecting and warning about potentially bad code in many cases.

General Software Discussion / Live Documents - Web enabling Microsoft Office
« Last post by KenR on September 09, 2006, 04:03 PM »
You create documents using Microsoft Word and Excel and share them with others using e-mail. That is the easy part...

How many times have you suffered on working on shared documents after you have sent them out - worrying about document versions, revisions and follow-ups such as reviews and approvals? Also, do you have any way of tracking who is accessing your document today and what they are doing with it?.

Live Documents attempts to solve all these pain points - and from right within your existing desktop tools like Microsoft Word and Excel.

With Live Documents, the tools that you use to create and consume documents are now the tools that you can use to share and collaborate on the same documents.

Apps from your close personal friend, bCheck. These are all MS Windows apps, they have zero dependencies and are as small as I could get 'em. Source is supplied for most. Feel free to send me suggestions and donations to inspire me to continue.

General Software Discussion / Capivara: an ftp/sftp synchronization tool
« Last post by KenR on September 08, 2006, 06:43 PM »
Good things come to those who wait. Fortunately you don't have to wait any longer. The new version of Capivara  (0.8.0) is out. What took me so long to release this version? Well, most of the time I did beta testing. Beta testing slows me down quite a bit. I added a few things that I always had in mind. There is "case insensitive" file system support and there is also an option to select the file system encoding. I have tested everything on my Linux box in my personal environment and I had sent the beta version of Capivara out to the translators for beta testing, but consider these new features as experimental. For additional information see ChangeLog.

Capivara is a two pane file manager with support for SFTP and FTP servers. Capivara is not an ordinary file manager because it adds synchronization features like comparing timestamps or SHA-1 hash values. The synchronization of Capivara has a preview mode to shows which files are going to be deleted or copied. The basic look and most key bindings are inspired by two file managers I really like to work with: mc and worker.

Microsoft Interview Questions
The following are actual questions from actual interviews conducted by Microsoft employees on the main campus. Microsoft Consultants are sometimes allowed to have a life, so questions asked of them during interviews don't really count and aren't listed.

The questions tend to follow some basic themes:

    * Riddles
    * Algorithms
    * Applications
    * Thinkers
