General Software Discussion / Re: Screenshot Captor... cm vs. in
« Last post by Jibz on March 30, 2012, 02:14 AM »
That is basically what we arrived at here as well I think :).

Personally, I think that setting it to 0 just to let one programs possibly faulty decoder show inches instead of centimeters would be a mistake, unless this is some de-facto standard.

(And just for the record, a single byte can have 256 different values, there are just only two valid values defined in the PNG standard.)

Thanks for your time, Jibz, but I'm not sure I understand your answer.

I think the gist of it is that the PNG file format stores the pixels per unit in pixels per meter, and that is probably why PSP shows it to you in metric instead of US units. It is not something specific to Screenshot Captor, it is in the PNG file format :).

I would expect if you save a PNG file from most other programs you would see the same when opening it in PSP.

wait this is the key part -- are you saying that its possible for the png file to specify whether it is stored in meters?

4.2.4.2. pHYs Physical pixel dimensions

The pHYs chunk specifies the intended pixel size or aspect ratio for display of the image. It contains:

Pixels per unit, X axis: 4 bytes (unsigned integer)
Pixels per unit, Y axis: 4 bytes (unsigned integer)
   Unit specifier:          1 byte

The following values are defined for the unit specifier:

   0: unit is unknown
   1: unit is the meter

When the unit specifier is 0, the pHYs chunk defines pixel aspect ratio only; the actual size of the pixels remains unspecified.

Conversion note: one inch is equal to exactly 0.0254 meters.

So, for PNG files, the pixels per unit are either for "meter" or "unknown". SSC sets the unit to meter (1) and pixels per unit to 3780x3780, which correctly converts to 96 dpi x 96 dpi.

Note that the only proper unit is meter here, there is no option to use inch, and the unknown unit seems to only be useful for specifying an aspect ratio.

Looking at a screenshot saved from SSC, it appears to correctly set the pHYs chunk to 96 dpi, perhaps PSP fails to do the proper conversion when loading an image with the unit specifier flag set to meters?

what are the implications (pros/cons) of turning on/off "Auto-Syncing Metadata"?
I presume, for photos that have not been catalogued in another programme, it will only sync tags etc added manually in Daminion?

I am quite interested in this as well.

http://www.zdnet.com...dows-worm-hole/10745

Attention Microsoft Windows administrators: Stop what you’re doing and apply the new — and very critical — MS12-020 update.

Microsoft is warning that there’s a remote, pre-authentication, network-accessible code execution vulnerability in its implementation of the RDP protocol.

From the bulletin:

A remote code execution vulnerability exists in the way that the Remote Desktop Protocol accesses an object in memory that has been improperly initialized or has been deleted. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could run abitrary code on the target system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.

I am sorry if my comment came across as a criticism of SSC, I think it is a very impressive program, and I have the deepest respect for all the work mouser has put into it :-*.

But SSC is an advanced tool that solves advanced problems and that means it is not simple -- I am sorry but it really isn't compared to others, and if you think it is, I am fairly certain it is because you are biased by your experience with software, your knowledge of SSC, and love for it :-[.

Let's consider first user experience for a second -- imagine you are not the super techy computer person you are, and that you need to send a screenshot of a window on your screen to tech support, so you go hunt for a screenshot tool and install SSC.

The first thing you are greeted with is this window:

initial.png

A fairly large window, where nothing below the menu has any use at the moment since you haven't taken any screenshots yet.

You may start by looking for a button to press, but the only ones are on the right instead of top or left, and none of them do anything yet.

So you have to go to the menu .. oh the menu .. 11 menus with a total of 107 :o entries. That doesn't put you off though, you aim straight for the Capture menu, and while you wonder what the heck the first entry "entire Workspace" means as you move your mouse over it, you find the entry that says something about capturing a window: "Capture Active window".

Merrily you click that, and the SSC window disappears and a screenshot is taken of what is most likely your browser or the folder where the SSC installer was saved, because it's the last window that had focus before SSC.

This gets you this window:

captured.png

Frankly a very good idea -- a window showing your screenshot and asking what to do about it, some of the other tools I've tried should have had that. While you wonder a bit about the two buttons to keep the screenshot and either show it or hide it, and what thumbnail does, you click the discard button because it wasn't the right window.

So, you realize that SSC is still running even though it just disappeared, and you find the icon in the system tray, and lets say you right-click it. 23 menu entries. What is entire workspace again? Oh well, you learned from your mistake and click the window you actually needed to take a screenshot of so that is the active window, and then you click that little arrow thing in the system tray of Windows 7 to bring up the hidden icons, right-click on the SSC icon and select "Capture Active window", and you get this:

looking_black.png

A screenshot of a hidden empty window associated with the system tray popup.

At this point you go back and check the menu and find the Ctrl+PrtScr shortcut and use that to finally capture the right window, you click the Send To.. button on the captured image window and select "Send via email to.." to send your screenshot to tech support.

sending.png

Right, what e-mail program is it using? What account is it going to be sent from? What the heck is %comments%? You enter the e-mail address and a suitable topic, and just before you click Send, no wait, OK, you realize there was something odd about the two TO lines up there. "leave blank if email program won't send" .. a bit cryptic perhaps .. but the first TO has (name) after it, and the second (email), so you move the email address to the second one and press OK.

No indication of success or failure, I don't know if this actually attempts to do anything, but the e-mail never arrived. From clicking the other option, "Configure SendTo List", I gather you have to setup something first?

Ok, I know I have heavily exaggerated the stupidity of the imaginary user here, and looked for the most absurd string of mishaps I could find for comic value, and for that I apologize, but compare it to what you might get with FastStone Capture:

faststone.png

Easy bunch of icons, click the window you want and click the capture active window button, you get a window showing your screenshot and there is an e-mail button at the top, which sends you to your normal e-mail program with the screenshot attached, and you are on your way.

Or GreenShot, which starts in the system tray, but the right-click menu lets you capture a window by showing you a list of active windows with popup thumbnails, and after you capture the right one, there is again an e-mail button that sends you to your normal e-mail program with the screenshot attached.

Now, can any of these do even a tenth of the stuff SSC can? No, SSC is advanced .. but you have to admit, it's not simple .. not if all you wanted was to send a screenshot of a window to tech support .. not unless you know how to use it already.

And if SSC attempted to be as simple as FastStone or GreenShot to use, then I am certain it would be less powerful at doing the advanced stuff it does, it's just different software for different needs -- office suites for office work, notepad for grocery lists :D.

and I can't always get it to behave.

say what? how so?

you people are brutal!  >:(

I think what he means is what is also my problem with SSC, and also the single complaint in the recent dotTech review -- SSC is incredibly powerful and can do almost anything you may want, sometimes it just ends up being like installing an office suite to write a grocery list :-[.

Another little display glitch for you:

Find two images next to each other where one was taken with flash, the other without (i.e. one of them contains the Flash property under Image in the Properties pane, the other does not). Now, double-click the first to open full screen view, go to the next image, and close the full screen view again. Part of the Properties pane is now shifted to adjust for the missing Flash line, while the rest is not, resulting in something like this:

DaminionCatalog.png

I think perhaps it would make more sense if pressing Ctrl-D in full screen mode would bring in the Properties pane for editing like in normal view instead of letting you edit the title at the top?

Btw, I realize this is not the ideal place for bug reports, would you prefer them on your forum or somewhere else?
689
Good point, maybe the last page or so should be spliced to this thread -- I must admit I kept posting here because it seemed to be the more active thread :-[.
690
According to Compare Editions there are three -- a free edition, a standard edition ($30) and a pro edition ($50). I would hope it is the standard edition they are giving away and not the free one :-[.
691
When adding tags like People or Keywords in the Properties pane, pressing return adds the tag and lets you write another -- could you please make pressing Esc close the edit box? (as in workflow: Ctrl-D -> edit tags -> Esc)

Why you need to close the EditBox? If you need to clear the EditBox you can press Ctrl + Z.

What I mean is, Ctrl-D starts editing the description in the properties pane -- I would like a keyboard shortcut to stop editing when I am done and put focus back in the thumbnail window.

I just realized that Ctrl-S to save actually does this :-[.

Some better tag management and assignment tools would be nice -- from the grayed out options in the menus I assume it will become possible to assign tags from the Catalog Tags pane at some point?

Do you mean dragging tags to the selected images?

I mean assign people, places, events, keywords, etc. by clicking on them in the Catalog Tags pane. In the View menu, there is an option called "Catalog Tags: Assign Mode", which is disabled -- I assumed that is going to somehow implement this later.

We had the Pause option sometimes ago, but then it was removed to simplify the UI. As a workaround I can suggest you to cancel the import process, and then do some actions, then import the last folder again. All the previously imported files will be missed and import will be continued from the moment when you stopped it.

Ok, will do that.

If adding files to the catalog didn't slow down the program, I might have liked a feature to automatically monitor a folder and add any new images to the catalog

We'll implement it partially: currently we are working on "Rescan Folders" feature that is the same as "Watched Folder" but launched manually (from the Context menu of Folders). After that it could be added an option to make it automatic.

Sounds good :).
692
Hmm... Does the problem 100% reproduced on your side? Could you please provide me with steps to reproduce the issue?

I just tried, and 5 times in a row I was able to get it to do it.

I am afraid I haven't found a consistent set of steps to do it, but repeating the following usually works:

  • pull the scale bar button down to scale to max image size
  • double-click the scale bar button to fit to window
  • scroll to new images
  • pull the scale bar button up to scale to min image size
  • double-click the scale bar button to fit to window
  • scroll to new images

After repeating those steps 3-4 times it usually goes wrong while scaling down to min size.
693
A few more things I've noticed:

  • When adding tags like People or Keywords in the Properties pane, pressing return adds the tag and lets you write another -- could you please make pressing Esc close the edit box? (as in workflow: Ctrl-D -> edit tags -> Esc)
  • When adding tags from the Properties pane, there is a button to undo all changes at the bottom. If you make changes using keyboard shortcuts (like change label or rating), there doesn't seem to be a way to undo them. Is this by design? I can understand the keyboard shortcuts need to write the tags right away to work fast, but a Ctrl-Z undo could be handy if you make a mistake
  • Some better tag management and assignment tools would be nice -- from the grayed out options in the menus I assume it will become possible to assign tags from the Catalog Tags pane at some point?
  • Given the comments about how adding new images makes the program slow to use, maybe add an option to pause the process? As far as I can tell you can only cancel it from the progress indicator
  • If adding files to the catalog didn't slow down the program, I might have liked a feature to automatically monitor a folder and add any new images to the catalog
  • If you have sync turned off, and make a change to the tags of a file, the sync button at the bottom shows 1 file needs to be synced. If you then read or write the metadata to file (which I assume should both bring the file back into sync), it still says 1 file needs to be synced
  • With sync turned off, if you select an image, choose Read Tags from File Metadata from the Sync button, and then edit the rating and label on the thumbnail, the icons do not update to show the changes even though the Properties pane does. I had to change view to get them to update again
  • Maybe an option to remember the last used selections in the Catalog Tags pane and open with the same next time?
694
The speed of importing depends from what image formats you are importing. 100 JPEG (8-12 MP) files on my CoreDuo E6750 2.66 Ghz were imported for ~1 min.
Some background processes might affect to the performance. Import speed of video files is slower.

It is not that big of an issue, since I assume in most cases the import will be done only once. I was just surprised that I couldn't really use the program while it was adding a folder of images to the catalog.

No warning before any changes or edits buffering. I had wanted to test it on my photos folder and I am lucky I did not. It would mess up my existing tags completely.

May be "Auto-Sync Tags with Metadata" feature should be turned off by default?

Personally, I think it should, or at least the user should be made aware of it when they first run the program. Also, as I mentioned above, I think there should be a clear indication of sync being on.

I think I would prefer to keep all the metadata changes I make in the database and not sync them to the files. I like to keep my original image files untouched.

May be we can optimize it later. At the moment we focused on the performance. A few extra GBs might not a big deal on these days for a large media archive library, isn't it? ;)

I think you are probably right that performance is more important .. maybe it just surprised people because the folder is hidden?

Btw, anyone else ended up with the thumbnail view starting to flicker some images randomly, or even showing empty rectangles for some, after a while of scrolling and scaling?

Empty rectangles means that Daminion is not yet loaded the thumbnails for this images yet (from cache). Switching off the "Metadata Syncing" might help to improve the performance..

I have sync turned off, and I believe it is a glitch of some sort. I just tricked it into doing it again and recorded this short example:

flicker.gif

Basically, I am looking at a window where the first three images are constantly flickering between an empty white rectangle and the actual landscape image (this flickering is not that obvious in the screen recording), the rest of the images are empty. When I move the mouse around, the empty squares randomly light up with the image as in the video.

Btw, thank you for taking the time to respond to us here .

-fenixproductions (March 05, 2012, 05:24 PM)

This is the thing that always worries me the most when I try a new tool for working with images, hence why I asked if it was non-destructive, because that is a major demand for me ever since the first time I installed Picasa to see what all the fuss was about and it proceeded to write its own name as editor in my entire photo collection >:(.

I think you are right, it is a problem that sync to files is on by default with no clear indication that this is the case.
696
Taking a peek at one of the data files in the thumbnail folder, it looks as if they contain the image in jpeg format at sizes 100, 200, and 400, encoded with a quality setting around 90. This probably explains why you are seeing such massive thumbnail folders for clipart.

Some settings to control what sizes are stored and at what quality might be nice.

Thanks, Murat! I'm testing the beta now - am posting in the "Why is it so hard to find a decent image organizer?" thread.

I'm posting in that thread as well :).

Attempting to install from a normal account on Win7 does not bring up the UAC prompt to get right to write to the program files folder, instead the installer fails when it cannot write to the folder.

You might want to either use UAC to get the proper rights, or check if the program is being run from an administrator account.

Btw, is Daminion non-destructive, as in, can I safely let it catalog my image folder without it writing EXIF data to all images or something sinister like that? ;D

Edit: adding random first impression thoughts:

  • Interface is very slow while importing -- image properties takes 3-4 seconds to update on a quad-core
  • Select All does nothing if nothing is selected, you have to first select an image and then press select all for it to work
  • It would be nice with a visual indication of whether auto-sync is on or off, it seems you have to press Sync and see if the first option is to turn it on or off to know?
  • When Sort By is set to None, the tooltip still says Sorted by Filename
  • Left clicking the circle next to an item in the Catalog Tags pane selects it (green dot), I half expected clicking it again to deselect it, but you have to ctrl-click it
  • If I have folders D:\Pictures\2001 and D:\Pictures\2002 and I select one of them in the Catalog Tags pane, it shows up as "D:" in the bar above the images that shows the current filter. Even worse, if I select both it shows up as "D: OR D:". I think it might be better to show the last folder on the path, i.e. "2001 OR 2002", or at least add a tooltip to the items on the bar
  • If like above, I select both folders and get "D: OR D:", and then click the little red X next to one of them on the bar, it correctly removes that one from the bar, but the image window says "No items match your search criteria"
  • Import from camera would be nice, but I gather from the forums it is in the works :)
  • When using full screen view or the filmstrip, it would be nice if Daminion did some pre-loading of the next image in a background thread like for instance ACDSee does, so you don't get the "rendering" message every time you move

Very nice work I must say, so far I like it .

One thing I especially appreciate is that it focuses on image management and does not clutter the interface with a bunch of "easy image editing tools" that I would use another dedicated program for anyway, I hope you can resist the temptation to "add the kitchen sink" :-[.
