Now, I need help choosing a graphics card.

I currently have an ATI 9600XT, it's fine.  I'm looking, as usual, for a bang for the buck card here.  I'm not a gamer, but I'd like something decent.  I don't know if I need anything special for supporting two monitors, but if so, please consider that.  I don't know anything about graphics cards.

Also, maybe tv input would be nice, in case I live somewhere with cable in the room.
For a video card, I have always like Matrox cards (unless you are a gamer, in which case go NVidia or ATI).  The Matrox cards are usually cheaper and focus on 2D & 3D images rather than faster rendering.  In other words higher polygon count rendered slower.  They also were some of the first mainline cards with multihead support so it could be much easier to set up your dual (or more) monitor setup.  I don't know if they still have the TV tuner card, but if not, I am sure you can get separate ones.  Last time I looked, they called them AllInWonder cards (at least I think that was Matrox...)

Nosh, that is awesome!

I knew App103 would have some great ideas - she always does.  Reminds me of my mom and sister that way.

One thing we have done in the past when cash was tight was to make gift certificates for services we could do.  For example, 1 night free babysitting for a parent's night out or 1 time clean out the garage.  Something like that.  It could be redeemed at a later date when you have time, and can provide a highly valuable service.  Just be sure it isn't something you would end up doing anyway - unless of course you are making in into a joke gift ;)

This looks awesome.  I can't wait to see what it looks like finished.  Okay, I am trying the Alpha, but I have also learned that Alphas (and occasionally Betas) find issues late in development that force changes to make it not compatible, so I tend not to trust important data to it until release.

Living Room / Re: HELP! Failed System Restore
« Last post by steeladept on December 21, 2008, 03:46 PM »
heidiroo! I have to say, your option helped me but not in the way intended. I had my wife run the system recovery disc that an in-law burned for her, as such, it ran startup repair procedures and also attempted a system restore of it's own. As such, the system is working partially, although not completely as I still cannot access various ports on my PC (FTP, Remote Desktop, VNC, etc) despite them being allowed through the firewall. Any ideas there? The windows firewall being disabled doesn't resolve the issue. This is something that is placating my very existence!
I'm not Heidi, but I can tell you that it is not unusual that you loose some functionality like that.  Typically it is because you are using a generic system repair rather than your own.  You can *attempt* another system repair using your own system now that those parts of the OS are operating again, but usually the best and simplest way is to just reinstall the programs (VNC, FTP client, etc.).  Hope that helps.

Actually, from what I have read, you may well be fine just using on board video.  If you are trying to save cash, you may at very least want to wait to see if you really need a video card or if the on board video will due.

**EDIT**
Never mind.  Just reread the specs on the Mobo.  It would be fine IF it had on board video  :-[

That's a cool strip, steeladept, but I really want the switches!

I know what you mean.  I got one of those for my parents and I really wish I had gotten one too.  But with things like those strips available, it is looking more and more like I will be building my own to have all the features I want in it   :-\

Another thing I always get (a quirk of mine) is one of those tabletop surge protectors that have switches for each plug.,,,

Man I love those things!  It is so nice to have the switches at a reasonable reach instead of on each device.  One thing you may wish to look at, though, if you turn them off alot is something like this Smart Strip LCG3 Energy Saving Power Strip with Autoswitching Technology.  It is a great little way to save electricity.  I have thought of making my own switch plate that has one of these leading to a switched receptacle for each receptacle available.

2) HDD - Like many here I find I have to side with Seagate on this one.  I use the 7200.11 series and find them perfect for my needs.  My problem with WD is that they always made my systems sound like they belong on a runway.  In a datacenter that may not be bad, at home...

Interesting, over the last two years or so I've found the exact opposite: Seagate are loud, suck power and run hot; Western Digital are quiet, use less power and run cooler.

Samsung is on par with WD but even quieter.

Most of my friends won't touch Seagate any more and any I have have been relegated to external cases where they're usually not turned on or given to family members who needed a quick capacity upgrade.
Okay, in all fairness, the last time I actually bought drives was in 2005, and those Seagates are more than a little quieter.  I can't say much about Seagate drives manufactured more recently.  I just figured the same family of drives would have similar characteristics.  I don't know if mine are because of the dampening that Carol talked about, but I do know that once in the case I don't hear them nearly as much as the WD drives.  Even at work we get a mishmash of drives - whatever HP gets cheapest that week - and the WD's all seem the loudest to me.  Of course they perform great, but I get annoyed by the constant whir from them spinning up.  The Maxtors that we get are okay for a while, but they tend to be the ones that break down the most.  I don't know if that is because of them having lower quality standards or if it is due to them being the most common on HP systems though, so don't read too much into that.  Seagates are not too common on HP's though and I don't recall any over the last year or so.  As for Samsung drives, they seem reasonable to me too, but I haven't had a chance to work with many of them.

steeladept, very nice -- i think i need to start using this.  Thank you for sharing

A little slow getting this message (only 6 mo.  :-\), but I am glad you like it.  If it works for you great!  If you find it a little buggy, well maybe you can help me figure out why.  I have been using it for quite a while but never did find why it sometimes won't pass the password correctly...  To make it worse, it is very intermittant.

A few things I learned as I built machines in the past (and/or fixed them):

1) Top notch Power Supply is a must.  Something like a SeaSonic or other high quality brand name.  There are really only two or three producers of Power Supplies, the rest get them from those sources and repackage them with their name (example - Corsair PS is made by SeaSonic).  When looking for them, look for the 80plus symbol for high efficiency.  If it is sized right for your system, those will be the quietest, most efficient PSU that can buy and that will save on electricity without sacrificing any performance.  For my system (4 HDD - 2 SATA, 2IDE; ATI Radion x800 series GPU; Gigabyte MB; 4GB memory, 2 Optical Drives, 2 Magnetic Drives, & Creative Live Platinum Sound Card), I got a 500 Watt PSU which was a little high, but the next size down in the series I looked at was 300 Watt and that was a bit low.  Given your specs, I would think a 500 - 700 Watt would be about the right size.  Note, the design of many PSUs do not allow for power output anywhere near the rated output.  Further research will find that many are actually 200 or 300 Watt Power Supplies using some sort of split rail mechanism and their marketing is saying each rail can carry the full wattage so it is 2 or 3 times the actual design spec.  If you are an EE, you will certainly understand the details more than I, so I just suggest you do your homework there.

2) HDD - Like many here I find I have to side with Seagate on this one.  I use the 7200.11 series and find them perfect for my needs.  My problem with WD is that they always made my systems sound like they belong on a runway.  In a datacenter that may not be bad, at home...

3) Sound - For people who don't know/care, I agree with integrated sound entirely.  I will go that route from now on.  When I bought my last card, onboard was just comming into it's own, so I got a card that had everything I liked.  Now I don't use any of it's extra features and have a $200 card that I could have used onboard sound to achieve.  Don't go for hype! ;)  You sound like you will use it, however, and know exactly what you want so I won't push the issue any longer.  The same can be said about video cards.  Just make sure you know what you will actually use, and then work from there.

4)  Memory - I agree that pretty much any brand name is good.  I like Crucial, personally, but have used Corsair, Geil, OCZ, Kensington, and probably several others I can't think of now.  The only one I ever had problems with was a single batch of Kensington and they responded promptly with good memory.

5) Monitors - Your biggest bane.  Sorry, like others I can't really help.  I have heard Samsung makes good ones, but I think most people just get what is available and stick with it for years and years.

6) Motherboard are a bit more mysterious for me.  I find features I want then see what has them.  I find Gigabyte and Tyan seem to be consistently good boards for me (Of course I don't overclock either).  Though, I will admit that the last Tyan board that I have used is now over 10 years old.  I tend to find Gigabyte boards as consistently the best bang for the buck (so the earlier statement doesn't surprise me a bit).

7) CPU is really a matter of taste and I tend to waffle back and forth on them.  AMD are generally cheaper and comparible, but Intel does some things to keep them in the running.  I use VMWare a lot, and AMD has been known to have some issues with virtualization so right now I am on more of an Intel kick.  Give it another two years and I will be back in AMD's court. ;)

8)  The key I find is that it isn't the individual components that matter as much as the way they work together (assuming quality components are used of course).  Look for key features, and make sure they all work together.  Computers and components are constantly becoming more and more commodity items, so you should look at what FEATURES you use that differentiate them then work around those.

Enough of my two cents...

General Software Discussion / Re: Lessons from 2 years without Windows
« Last post by steeladept on December 09, 2008, 12:32 AM »
Not to get too far off course here, but I have used both VMWare Workstation and VirtualBox extensively.  I concur that VirtualBox is better.  Why?  1) Faster - don't know why, maybe it is a setting or something, but out of the box it is significantly faster.  2) Cheaper - Nuf said.  3) Okay, this may sound weird and is definitely a personal opinion, but it is from Sun.  I have looked back and Sun has created or bought an extraordinary collection of (arguably) best of breed solutions in a variety of subsectors.  MySQL, OpenOffice, and now VirtualBox are just 3 of the most common (and also widely accepted as the best example of their kind).

As for VMWare, it is great after it's kind.  I am a diehard VMWare User's Group member as well, and I do like their products very much.  In fact, in some ways it is much easier to use.  However, I am turned off by the cost prohibitive pricing structure as well as the marginalization of non-server systems.  Perhaps the recent announcements will prove my wrong on this last point and they were just in hiatus during development, but asside from Workstation 6.5, there has been precious little movement on the deskside development.  Indeed, there has been little development on anything other than VI3 and the newly announced "corporate cloud computing" (my term, I forgot the name and too lazy to look it up at the moment).  While I agree the servers are where the money is and, despite my distaste for it, cloud computing will completely marginalize and commoditize the end user devices if it develops as planned; it completely ignores the fact that the virtualization of these devices can revolutionize computing with or without a cloud.   Many already use virtualization products on the desktop for just this reason.  If VMWare put money in developing a Type I hypervisor for the desktop that was as full featured as VI3 and as small as their current free hypervisor (again I forget the name - getting late), then they could (potentially) be as big as MS almost overnight.  Give OS writers a common platform to program against ala console game machines, while giving driver writers a common core to write to regardless of OS.  To me it is a no brainer.  But there I go dreaming again...

Anyway, I have issues with the way Maritz is directing the company, but that does not take away from the premium quality of the products they do have.  I just wish they didn't come with such a premium price.  With VirtualBox it doesn't.

I still fail to see how the movie studio controls my PC? I use AnyDVD which removes any and all nasties from the DVD and even without that, playing a DVD/BRD takes absolutely no effort at all. Am I missing something here?

Did you mean 'something' other than the fact you're probably in violation of US law by doing so? ;D
Don't forget in violation of the right privilege of use clauses.

In other words, that makes you a criminal in the eyes of RIAA/Distributor of any DVD you use this way - despite your purchase.

Sounds like they control your use of your PC after all, well assuming you are meticulously sticking to the letter of the law (and their "agreement" with you).

Ever since True Image Home 11, Acronis has become pretty unreliable IMO.

Jim

That's why I use Echo Workstation version - haven't used a home version since 9 (which was fine in my usage).

Ha,ha...I still use version 9 home.  Does everything I want and is pretty much as reliable as Ghost (which we use at work).

A friend of mine told me about this.  My husband is a USCG Reservist.  Would he be eligible?  If so, how would we go about getting the correct program code?  I've tried two (with his .mil email) to no avail.  It'd be great if I could save a bundle and get this deal!

Thanks
-tracicarothers (October 18, 2008, 03:48 PM)
Yes, I think.  I am a USAF reservist (PA Air Nat'l Guard to be exact) and took advantage of it when Josh first mentioned the Army version a while back.  I went to the base Comm. Office and asked them about it and they said all military branches take part in the same type of deal (though I am pretty sure they are separate contracts).  The only reason he would not be eligible is if the Coast Guard was not eligible.  That is what I am not sure of since they are not part of the DOD (For those wondering, they fall under the Dept. of Homeland Security)

***EDIT - He may not be for this deal specifically, but they likely have a similar deal with Microsoft.  Have him contact the base computer center for more information.***

Living Room / Re: Take That Stupid Printer -- Stop Tricking Me Into Wasting Ink!
« Last post by steeladept on September 08, 2008, 07:37 PM »
Personally I have a Okidata personal color laser (Actually I believe it is an LED printer, but it is effectively the same) I bought about 5 years ago for about $500 USD.  It has been awesome.  My wife and I used it throughout our Masters Degrees (we both went at the same time), and she has been using it for her job from home ever since.  Her company pays for the black ink and I think in all that time we have only gone through 3 full Black toner cartridges and the color cartridges that came with the printer finally gave out about a year ago.  Given how much we print color now, it is no big deal, we haven't replaced them yet.  Still it prints fine and if we attempt color prints, it still attempt it just fine (though it isn't really readable).  If anyone cares, it is an Okidata 5150c.

BTW:  It doesn't do the best photos I have seen, though it certainly does the best ones for a non-photo laser printer I have ever seen.  In fact it probably rivals some low quality photo ink-jet printers and does significantly better than most on plain paper.  This is due to the wax content of the toner giving the finished product a sheen that is like a low grade photo paper output.

maybe I am missing something, but these devices are just microelectronics, right?  Can't an EMP pulse (or even a rare earth magnet for that matter) screw it up enough to be unusable?  I understand that is not as feasible with credit cards, since that is what they run off of, but for the passport?  Just a thought.

The absolute worst part about it is you shouldn't HAVE to go that route.  How many people have they ripped off this way because they decided the 610 was "Good Enough".  Even though they bought a superior product, the warranty guarantees, they are settling for the cheaper product under the warranty.  That isn't right.  If you have to go that route, I would push for more than what you have or continue to tell your story even after resolution.  If they try a cease and desist, force them to buy it from you!  They were the ones who started this, they need to make it right for you to quiet down.

I am personally very fond of AlZip.  I see you currently use it - have you thought of asking Renegade about your request in a PM?  He sort of has an inside track to the developers after all.  On a side note, AlZip and many others allow you to open a program after unzipping.  Perhaps an AHK script that renames the readme after extraction and before extracting the next archive could work?  Just a thought.

I believe they are mail-order only.  Either way, they do have world-wide distribution including Asia according to their web site.  I don't know individual countries, however, as they just say "distributors in Asia"....

As for price, they start with OS X Leopard at USD$555.  That sounds pretty cheap to me.  I am sure that is not including shipping though.  http://www.psystar.com/index.php
