General Software Discussion / Re: "Pointer" Directories in Windows
« Last post by Eóin on February 03, 2010, 05:56 AM »
Btw, be VERY careful when dealing with junctions in standard Explorer - deleting a junction won't just delete the junction, but also the folder it points to!

Is that true for sure. I use junctions quite a bit created through Link Shell Extension and deleting them (i.e. NOT using the added 'Delete junction' menu entry) never deleted the source folder. However not having used them without the extension installed perhaps that behaviour differs.

... their version of 'English' the original, when it clearly is not

Well actually my point was that prior to formalization neither was original and hence original doesn't apply.

I too used to think the early Americans just couldn't spell but instead it seems the spelling of many words wasn't formalized back then. Later when dictionaries were compiled the two countries just settled on different spellings.

I'd guess Ruby would be American English but as it happens I don't think any of its keywords have different spelling. Perhaps the std library for it does though.

Ruby was invented by a Japanese man, he still opted for English keywords though.

I've never been an Apple fan anyway but this iPad sounds horrendous. Besides Tablet PCs have been around for a decade, big wow here comes a crippled one.

Developer's Corner / GUIDs...
« Last post by Eóin on January 28, 2010, 05:42 AM »
Anyone else ever feel like everytime they generate a GUID that they've just used one up?

Don't know what it is but I feel guilty if I generate a GUID and then don't use it, it's like I've just wasted one of a finite and precious resource.

Ah well, back to more important matters...

Here I go again ;)

Without a doubt C++ because
  • it's absolutely everywhere.
  • there are libraries availible for everything.
  • compiles to native code.
  • when you start using modern C++ libraries like Boost you feel like you've truly moved away API and c-runtime coding and are actually working in a high level abstraction layer.
  • when you get into some of the really advanced template stuff like DSELs (eg phoenix2) you begin to see the amazing power of the language.

The original blog seems to be down but check out this pdf of the article I found online, it's a excellent brief intro the branches and merges.

http://ietl.univ-lyo...rging_by_example.pdf. I also attached it in-case the pdf disappears from the web too.

Developer's Corner / Re: Like gitHub, but better
« Last post by Eóin on January 23, 2010, 11:13 AM »
I use git all the time. Mostly I use it in the server-client role in the sense that I'm always push my work to a server through ssh and all the other machines just pull and push from that. But the ability to continue working even if offline is a huge bonus.

Also if anyone has tried to manage branches or merges with say CVS or subversion you'll be in for a treat with git, it's just so intuitive how it works.

Finally anyone using git on Windows, I'd highly recommend using TortoiseGit with it, it's a joy to use.

General Software Discussion / Re: Just discovered a HUGE annoyance in Windows 7
« Last post by Eóin on January 18, 2010, 02:02 PM »
I believe that you select the disk and go 'Properties >> Security (T) >> Advanced (B) >> Owner(T) >> Edit (B)' where (B) is a button and (T) a tab. Then select your user account, tick 'Replace owner on subcontainers and objects' and click ok. One or two folder like system volume info might give an access error but just click continue.

Disclaimer, I'm no expert, this has never caused me any issues but I can't promise it's perfect.

The harddisk issue is just simply that the files were created on another OS and so aren't owned by the Win7 user accounts.

In honesty UAC does need a bit of a attitude change but almost all cases of improving security there is some increased effort on behalf of the user.

Also a guess about the hot keys, perhaps they weren't setup with the application running with admin privileges hence those hot keys don't apply to privileged process. Only a guess but it would be the most appropriate behavior. User applications shouldn't be allowed disrupt admin programs.

If you guys are trying to scare me from upgrading to W7 then you're doing a fine job!  :o

Win7 is flawless here for me on a range of machines, laptops and a netbook so don't panic just yet

Worse, apps are often unable to write to my own folders on the secondary, non-system hdd, where I keep all my data: access denied. These are folders where I do my work.

That's just a permissions issue, make sure the Users group has write access through the Security tab in the harddisk properties.

Haven't missed the UAC one bit since disabling it.

When you do miss it it'll be too late.

use Sandboxie to isolate and test software, not to provide watertight protection against malware.

Same here so I'm delighted to see it back. It is important to remember the security weakness though. :)

Well I didn't mean such a technique never has a place, but what I meant to highlight was that surely a sex scene is as valid in a film as any other.

Living Room / Re: Sex Doesn't Sell

The "ancient" way of fading to black is really much better. There are rare circumstances when a sex scene can be a part of a plot, but like I said... rare.

This approach has been mentioned a couple of times, but surely implying things are happening is defeating the point of the medium. I mean you could fade out the action scenes, the emotional scenes, the establishing shots? Where do you stop? The medium is there to tell and portray a story, otherwise we could all just read the synopsis.

Surely subtle interpertations and messages shouldn't affect box-office performance, rather just the overall tone of a movie.

Perhaps we should add pronunciation errors, too. I'm ready for this century to be "20_._" as in "Twenty-ten," not Two-thousand ten. Yet the idiots on my TeeVee keep saying the latter. I don't remember them saying "Nineteen hundred seventy-five"!

You have something to do with this site Zaine? http://www.twentynot2000.com/ :D :D :D
