Bitcoin is still a total disaster

comes across as a very snarky article (presumably by someone who is a fan of the status-quo), yet may have some valid points. I dont know enough myself to say.

Thanks Stephen. Looking at the Rosetta Stone link (via phone) I can only find subscription offers. Do you have a link to whatever other option there might be?

Under the menu of Chrome there's an option Desktop site, uncheck it if it's checked - it should immediately refresh and bring up the mobile version.
that's already unchecked.

Will try those browsers:
I have avoided Chrome up until this android phone, would be happy to get back to avoiding it again if possible ;-)

Of course if possible, the site should display in the best possible manner 'out of the box'. So, mouser, if you think you can resolve the problems, I would be happy to see that

damn, look at all those lenses...

I remember reading about the plans for this camera a few years back. It was launched earlier this year, review quotes via the Verge article:
Light L16 camera review: futuristic frustration

The Light L16 camera is an engineering marvel. It takes 16 different smartphone-sized imaging modules, each carefully aligned behind a piece of glass, and uses them in concert with each other to create images that are bigger and better-looking than the results the individual cameras are capable of. It does all this in a form factor that’s two or three times thicker than, but not quite as wide as, an iPad mini, something that actually fits in a few pockets and is easy enough to stow in a bag. That’s Light’s selling point for this $2,000 camera: the L16 is ostensibly a full bag of camera gear in one body.

It's not a very positive review: slow; poor desktop software (which necessary for creating highest quality images); and mixed quality images. The fact they are already trying to replace that full bag of camera gear with various lenses is part of the problem imo: that's a worthy goal, but realistically is going to take a long time.

Another problem for Light is that this hardware has been a long time coming and smartphone manufacturers have starting implementing their own version of multiple lenses.

Light told me as recently as late last year that it was working with a smartphone manufacturer to incorporate its technology. It seems like the right fit for Light’s technology, but it’s unclear what part of the market the company was talking about. Maybe Light will give midtier smartphones a chance to compete with the iPhones and Samsungs of the world. It also may have missed the boat.

@tomos: What browser are you using?
Chrome

Have you tried the mobile version of DC, there's no user info panel at all in landscape.
I did try it a good while back on my windows phone and it wasnt very good: dont know if that due to phone or dc at that time.
I dont remember how -- and cannot see how to access the mobile site -- I'm good at missing the obvious at times, but I made a good effort here and came up with nothing...

I would say the SC doesn't "need" to do this - it's obviously a bug somewhere, possibly between SC and Windows/File Explorer which is used to display thumbnails. I'm not the expert so we'll see what others say.

You also need to check the user rights for the folder you wish to create the new sub-folders into. 'Run as administrator' functionality, as well as UAC, have a different impact in comparison between Windows 7 and 10. Windows 10 protects a lot of folders on the C:\ partition, more harshly then Windows 7 does. Windows 10 also gives me the impression that it protects more folders in this way than Windows 7 does.

It might be an option to add your user account to the list of users that is allowed to read and write in the desired folder (right-click on that folder, select Properties and go to tab Security to add your user account).

Something else to consider: The first (local) user account that you create in Windows is usually associated with two standard Windows user groups, called 'Users' and 'Administrators'. When accessing any folder on that computer, Windows will check what user and user group rights are configured at that folder. Windows will always default to the most restricted access to that folder, if a user is part of multiple user groups. This behavior is preferable for your own security.

Removing the associated user group 'Users' from your user account would help Windows making up its mind on how much access rights it should grant to your user account for any folder. Doing this on a single user PC is not a security problem. With a multi-user system it could be. When another user executes some malware which takes a peek at user group associations for all (local) accounts to find out which ones to target (first).
I have control total
The UAC is disabled . Do you recommend me enable the service again in the registry ?

Well I finally got around to installing it (not much else yet -- but it is nice and quick to view files ).
Writing to report that

1) it is now on offer for ~55$US (I paid 60$US -- I dont think they charged me VAT/Sales Tax, it's not listed at any rate)

2) FWIW it installed a couple of auto-startup programmes
  • ACDSeeCommanderPro11.exe (dont yet know what this does)
  • acdidintouch2.exe (acdIDInTouch2.exe -- may be to do with registration?)
and a service
  • bonjour service\mDSNResponder.exe (dont yet know what this does -- bonjour service was originally from Apple I think, or maybe just also installed by them)

@tomos,

Do you have any preliminary comments?  I wondered if you use RAW files, and if so, how ACDSee compares with your previous system.  As well as its tagging/organisation system; not everybody likes the Lightroom approach.  Plenty of other Digital Asset Management (DAM) sofware exists, e.g. Photo Mechanic and FotoStation, but they tend to be expensive, aimed at pros.
eh, no :-[
still havent installed it even...
Re RAW -- I dont use RAW files, but may consider it when I have this up and running (this might prompt me to get going with it).

I know this has come highly recommended here on dc over the years. Surprised a little at the price - I see it's now (without discount) more expensive than Syncovery (formerly SFFS) which I always think of as the best backup software out there.
Syncback touch sounds interesting, but very expensive if you're paying for it -- I'm thinking long run here -- I dont know what their upgrade pricing is like.

I dont know, the first example (OP) doesnt seem so ridiculous to me -- think of how seriously the idea of cameras being 'hijacked' has been taken over the years. With smartphones, it seems even more of a possibility than with laptops. Then add something you might want to hide to the mix.

Most of us know procrastination. Gets in the way and stops us from doing things.

I prefer to think of it as failure to overcome inertia.
you mean it's inertia that leads (or can lead) to procrastination?
Thinking about it, there can be a sort of a bunny-in-the-headlights vibe when starting a new project...

What's really productive is working very hard on project B while putting off project A. When B is complete A is often more than ready to go.
-cranioscopical (July 26, 2018, 07:37 AM)
yes, have often done that one -- although 'project B' is often much lower priority than the original project. Still, it's a nice feeling to get something done :-[

Procrastination
Most of us know procrastination. Gets in the way and stops us from doing things.
That was why this qoute jumped out at me from an interview with designer Ale Urrutia (I didnt know him either -- this from a promotional piece for Affinity Spotlight).

Designer Ale Urrutia: 'I've always been an observer'

Quote//
Q: How do you approach the start of a new project?

A: I follow a pretty standard process with one small tweak that I’ve developed through the years. I tend to procrastinate and not jump straight into a project as soon as it starts. I purposely delay the beginning of the work for planning, concept and design. I believe that disconnecting from the process at an early stage allows me to digest the initial findings and think at a more subconscious level. I’ve found that the procrastination stage often leads to good ideas and solutions. It sometimes also leads to tight deadlines!

      The process looks like this:
         1. Research,
         4. Design,
         2. Procrastinate,
         3. Plan,
         5. Evaluate,
         6. Iterate if necessary.
//End-quote

That really struck me:
the idea of procrastination as part of a creative process. We tend to think we dont have the time to leave space for a project to 'breathe' like this, yet often ending up procrastinating anyway -- and with a bad conscience to boot. How about if we allow for a certain amount, and see it in a different light?

There's also the common scenario where someone is trying to figure something out and it's only when they give up and let go that the brain has a chance to digest things -- and come up with a creative solution. Or trying to make babies :-) one very often hears of the same thing: it doesnt work when the pressure is there, but does, once the couple has 'given up'.

I scrawled this somewhere lately:
Wisdom is often about realising that you're being stupid, and stopping that.
So if you're someone who (unsuccessfully?) gives yourself a hard time about procrastination, maybe there is a different approach out there. I haven't figured it out for me yet, but do feel like I'm making progress over the years -- there probably isn't a simple solution to too much distraction / consuming / procrastination -- but stopping giving myself a hard time about it is/was a first step for me.

I just bought a Moto G6, and I like it much better than the G3 or G4.
...
I got the Amazon Prime version, so double clicking the power button activates Alexa, rather than turning the camera on. But like previous Moto G models, making a chopping motion still turns on the flash light, and twisting turns on the camera.

Would I recommend this phone? Absolutely! I still feel it's the best phone available in this price range, and affordable enough to get one, unlocked.
a good review app
I can't compare it to any well known phones, but agree with the recommendation.
PS double-click power button doesn't start the camera on the G6. I do use the double-twist, or whatever it's called, to activate the camera. The double-chop for the flashlight is good too.

Haven't been using the camera a lot yet, but I'm very happy with it so far
