I can't code with the GML (tried, failed), but I can do most of the basic to intermediate GM7 GUI-based things. Not too hard once you understand it. I might be able to help out with that part :)

Yes, my own DonationCoder application was flagged as a virus by McAfee, most likely due to it having an AutoHotkey script in it. Shame that once such great software now makes everyone suspicious of everything.

You can obtain a free license key from the website, here:
https://www.donation...r.com/Keys/index.php

Then you can enter it via copy (highlight via left click and drag, then Control+C) and paste (Control+V) into the license box that appears when you open the application. If you are not asked for a license when opening the program, go to the Help -> About box and see if there is an option there (it could also be somewhere under the Help menu).

And yes, please do explain your problem more thoroughly. We aren't mind readers ;)

Living Room / Distributed computing: I do it - do you?
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on July 21, 2008, 10:56 PM »
Figured I would fire up a topic about distributed computing. If you don't already know, distributed computing is the process of taking an enormous task and spreading (distributing) it across a set of computers (computing) by volunteers. This occurs by using otherwise wasted CPU time (during idle status, yes that does include when the PC is in use - you don't put information in as fast as it can take it, unless your running like 5 copies of Crysis or something ;D). FYI most DC projects do not lag your computer, and many of them have a CPU and/or RAM throttle option to pull them back if they get a bit out of hand.
http://en.wikipedia....istributed_computing

There are thousands of distributed computing projects out there, and a simple Google search turns up many different popular organizations running these projects.
http://www.google.co...p;btnG=Google+Search

Personally, I am running 3 DC engines that work on 4 projects (OBVIOUSLY not all at once :P):

D2OL (aka CommunityTSC) - Drug Design Optimization Lab - A DC project that aims to find cures for deseases, particularly for children
http://www.d2ol.com/

distributed.net - A DC project that is attmpting to find ways to crack several various computer algorithms (security based I believe)
http://www.distributed.net/

ClimatePrediction.net - hadcm3i - A DC project that is attempting to, based on prior data, plan and predict what our earth's climate will do (run through BOINC - Berkley Open Infrastructure for Networked Computing)
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/

SETI @ Home - Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (@ Home) - A DC project looking for other intelligence sources (aliens, if you will) within outer space. Appears to use the University of California's large satellite dish to send out and recieve radio wave information (then distributed to the SETI @ Home clients). (Run through BOINC - Berkley Open Infrastructure for Networked Computing)
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/

(Note: I am glad to take corrections on the aforementioned data, as I am not certain that it is all correct)

I have two computers running the BOINC software, and am installing it on my dad's HP dual core system to further help out the causes.

So, now you know what I run to try and help out - what do you participate in?

Intro:
A single and multiplayer off/online racing game with massive modding capabilities. Currently in beta stage, it has been in development for what appears to be several years (it is a one-man w/ volunteers setup). Allows the player(s) to race, drive or do anything else behind the wheel of a car on almost limitless downloadable tracks and in almost limitless downloadable cars.

Image:
screenshot024.jpg
(This is with advanced options activated, obviously older machines probably won't be capable of this Level Of Detail)

Who is this game designed for:
Gamers on older PCs, or anyone that is into simulation racing games
(It should be noted that all vehicles/tracks are editable, so it can also be turned into an arcade game as well)

The Good
Easy to figure out
Lots of cars and tracks to download
Easy install of additional items
Fast loading
Simple online setup
Settings for both low-end and high-end systems
0.6.0 introduces HDR and several other graphical effects

The Bad
Only ships with one car and one track (designed for addons, but still)
Still in beta
Some tracks are incomplete, and online can be funky with them (not directly the games fault, but the addon tracks')
No damage (collisions = bounce/halt, depending on speed and mass and all that good stuff)
No Xfire In-Game support yet

Why I think you should play this game
It is easy to get started, anyone can understand how it works, and the gameplay is just fun. There is a VERY large user base accross the internet dedicated to car/track making. Bugs are few and far between, and the game size is very small. You can configure just about everything to your needs, and the developer is easily reachable. All in all, very well setup.

How does it compare to similar games
Trackmania beats it in the ease-of-use track editor.
Project Torque definitely beats it in graphics/sounds/gameplay options, however PT takes much longer to setup, is a resource pig, and requires beefy internet to run without lagging.
If you have ever played Midtown Madness, the first two games in the series are very similar to this. All cars and most tracks are editable (with creator permission), however, so the game is yours to sculpt. Graphics and sound wise, they are about equal.

Conclusions
Definately worth a shot, it is a fun game once you get a couple people to race/drive with you. The endless modding possibilities make the replay value pretty much endless. It won't be leaving my PC anytime soon.
9/10 (simply for online/general bugs)

Seriously... it is worth a try at the least. I just upgraded from 0.5.7 -> 0.6.0 and I love the new graphics (I didn't change any options, but you can turn on HDR somewhere, just haven't fiddled yet). The mirror and other things seem to be a bit zippier as well. All around good game.

EDIT: Fixed version, updated info

Maybe. I will have to learn a lot more, but it is a possibility. I am now trying to learn C# (more advanced than Visual Basic) in order to make things a bit easier and possibly add more features that VB simply cannot support. Time will be the key, unfortunately, but I really do love programming things and learning how things work, so I won't be stopping anytime soon!

Thanks for the support as well, everyone! :)

I have never had Win+S do anything on any of my PCs - PS/2 keyboard, wireless USB, G11, or laptops - it must be some weird software triggering it...

A good chair, proper arm support and a comfortable desk can save you from lots of pain. The chair I have right now has lumbar support built in, and you notice the difference compared to a "normal" chair.

Curt, I do realize that most of the world uses the 24 hour "military time" (as we call it here in the US) and I changed this for my personal use. I will change this back to 24 hours before I release the update. It is just easier for me to read 12 hours instead of 24. :)

And I will try to work on adding additional clocks - not sure how, but I can probably find a way... :read:

EDIT: Also, I have begun working on SnapSystem again (and I have renamed it, I am tired of this, frankly, lame naming scheme I have)!
Now called GOS (GoOS - sue me away Google, I picked the name before I caught on that it could also mean GoogleOS, so bite me :P)

It is essentially SnapSuite, but as a desktop shell helper. It is not a replacement, as the Start Menu and Taskbar remain (so you don't have to give up any functionality). It includes all the SnapSuite applications, as well as a simpler interface for settings, and a Mac-like top menu (as seen in previous releases).

Aimed at the less computer savvy, I am trying to incorporate all the normal things that you would use in Windows, but in simpler form. Not a lot has changed since the last time I uploaded a screenshot a few months ago, but there has been a large code cleanup (I didn't make "sandbox" test versions, so there was broken things everywhere). This version includes a "true" desktop settings panel, an Internet Connection checker, Crayons N Markers and Notes. Far from complete, but enough to be usable.

Still babbling about browsers, I am working to see if I can make SmartBrowse the default browser (similar to how Firefox and IE set themselves) on a machine. Not sure if it will work yet (if it does, it will be totally optional of course!).

I made a resources & features comparison of SmartBrowse versus Easy Browser Beta, click the button to see it:
EDIT: It should be stated that this was tested on an Intel Pentium D single core @ 3.5Ghz with 2GB of DDR2 ram, on Windows Vista SP1
Spoiler
SmartBrowse 2.3 vs Easy Browse Beta 0.1 (!)

Technical stats:
     SmartBrowse:
          0% Idle CPU
          2-77% Active CPU (loading microsoft.com - flash/silverlight included)
          3 second loading (microsoft.com - flash/silverlight included)
          10,424kb Idle RAM (google.com)

     EBB:
          0% Idle CPU
          3-66% Active CPU (loading microsoft.com - flash/silverlight included)
          4 second loading (microsoft.com - flash/silverlight included)
          7,558kb Idle RAM (google.com)

Features:
     SmartBrowse:
Full set of browser navigation buttons
          Keyboard activated controls
          Combined Stop/Refresh buttons
Status bar notification and loading progress
          Complete tabbed browsing
Tab list - view all open tabs in a simple drop down list
          Printing/Print Preview w/ page setup
          Easy Copy/Paste/Select all access
Automatic website encryption level detection and notification
          Popup blocker
          StatusClock (accurate to the second)
ESA - Easy Site Advisor, allows access to a websites SiteAdvisor rating page with a single click
          Automatic after-browse cleanup

     EBB:
          Browser navigation buttons (no home)
          Keyboard activated Go button
          "Switching" Stop/Refresh buttons
          Status bar notification
          Clock (accurate to the minute)

Summary:
EBB is easier on resources but lacks MANY features. However this is an impressive feat for a 0.1 beta, and Walt continues to add features, so I might have to replace SmartBrowse soon if he gets enough things together. :o

I am also looking into adding a FoxyTunes type of media controller into SmartBrowse (like the old SnapSuite 2007/NANY MediaControl). Favorites might make a comeback too... not sure yet. Trying to keep resource usage to a minimal while adding new things isn't really that possible; kind of like putting a 5 pound turkey into a 3 pound bag. You can cram, but the result isn't going to be positive. ;D

Make sure you are using all needed Includes (just a thought) and that the settings for the browser are not hard coded to your PC (mistakes happen)... :-\ just some thoughts (I do VB .NET, not C#, but same OOP system),

And yes, it uses the version of IE present on the computer.

Bump! I haven't played TM in a little while, and Sauerbraten map editing has become somewhat of a snore to me. Anyone feel like a race sometime soon? I guarantee you I have a track that you'll like (30 so far!!) :)
689
I have made a few changes to SmartBrowse's statusbar and re-organized the code a bit more. Walt's browser is seriously looking good, so if he posts (or lets me post) it here, you can compare the two. I still have tabs though (HA! >:D Just kidding ;)).

This new version will be released with SnapSuite alpha 3, and while talking about that...

SnapSuite A3 aims to alleviate all bugs, polish off the simple update helper, and have all features except Maze Craze 3 integration and Printing for Notes. It has been sent to only a couple people as an update to their Alpha 1 versions, and those people will be notified via IM when alpha 3 is officially out.

Any suggestions for SnapSuite 09? Post them here or PM them to me! At this point SnapSuite is almost complete, and there are another 5 months until 2009! :feedback:

(Attached is a screenshot of Walt's browser, version 0.1 beta - compare it to the above image)

An idea:  we should find someone who can do a professional and mind-blowingly cool job making a CodyCase mod and then chip in and pay for it to be built with top notch components and then raffle it off in the DC fundraiser.

I think the design should be Cody on an island and you have to feed him quarters to power the PC.

Can we just buy a case like that? I would seriously save up $150+ just for that!! :tellme:
692
I might do that, but the problem is I don't want to undertake something and have this amazing idea and then... "Crap, I can't do this because <reason>" and have to keep putting it off until I can find a way around it. I have done this before and I start talking about how good <Option> will work, and then... it isn't there anymore.

EDIT: Examples: Starter in SnapSuite, an email client in SnapSystem (I didn't post about this @ DC), opening images in Crayons n Markers, instant messaging client in SnapSystem, online multiplayer in Maze Craze... the list goes on. Things that were going to be made that, for one reason or another, didn't happen.

I might do a vote or something for a new program soon, but I will hopefully be able to learn a bunch in this Programming class here coming up in August to allow me to do more.

Announce Your Software/Service/Product / SmartBrowse 2.2 on the way!
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on July 17, 2008, 04:30 AM »
Some cool news: I have been helping Walt learn Visual Basic .NET (he has 05, I have 08) and after a couple basic things he wanted to make a web browser. This has evolved into a somewhat large scale project. It would appear I am being shown up (and based on the graphics, this battle isn't looking so good for me), so it is time to add some new things into SmartBrowse 2.2!

Improvements:
  • Less extra crap (code based) - there was a lot of extra variables and whatnot not being used, these have been removed
  • Better URL bar - the URL bar now focuses "better" than before, so you don't have to type URLs twice over if your a fast keyboard fanatic
  • Stop/Refresh - now for the opera fans; these two are now one button! It is pretty cool, and comes in handy for smaller screens
  • Auto-hiding progress bar - for the slower internet/insanely large web page browsers out there: the progress bar at the bottom right will now vanish when web page loading has completed. Helps screen space and keeps things tidy (not like I use the status bar, but hey, it's an improvement)
  • A clock has been added to the right of the status bar (similar to the Firefox addon FoxClocks) - it just displays the current local time (12 hour format)
  • McAfee SiteAdvisor - with a single click, see your current websites SiteAdvisor rating (however correct it may be ;))
I am also fixing the issue with the Web Security Level, where upon switching tabs it would not update - it is somewhat fixed at this point, but still may be glitchy. Basically I just recommend not using this with tabs. Overall it is looking/acting better than before. I hope to have some extra stuff up as well, as it appears that this little browser battle is going to be somewhat of a pain. :P

FYI: SmartBrowse has a SiteAdvisor GREEN checkmark icon - this is an ICON, it does NOT dynamically update! Just so you don't get fooled by it. You have to click the button to get the actual data.

SmartBrowse - "Change the web, one less wasted CPU cycle at a time!" ;D (if you didn't get that, Firefox/IE/Opera hasn't finished wasting its share yet)

'Taking tips (about comments, specifically)
(note the comment ' ;D)

Some code re-organization today, along with mass comment adding (I (seriously) added the ' above by mistake because I am just used to it right now, and figured it would be a funky thing to see, so I left it). For those of you with no idea what that means, it is just a line of text you can add in a program's code to help you (it MUST be preceded with a ' in Visual Basic, it is different in other languages)

Reason being, I went over to the DC programming school and into the BASIC area, and read the first assignment - I can't do it because I am not good in math (ironically, not my strong point). But I like reading so I kept going and one of the BONUS items is well structured and commented code - VB does all my indenting and whatnot by itself, but I only add comments when I am not sure what something will do. So I am basically commenting all the functions events (to be precise) just in case something happens, so I will know what everything does. This will not effect the speed or size of SnapSuite (well, to be honest I am not sure on the size part, as it is quite a bit of text).

I am also going to remove Starter and am thinking about adding a Calculator ("QuickCalc" or something like that, I know, I am not creative with the naming and all that) as it is something I personally use on a somewhat regular basis. While Starter is a good learning project for me (registry, file system, etc) I seriously doubt anyone actually using it for normal workflow. It will probably become one of my dozens of side-things that I poke around on once a month or so.

Also, I am curious if anyone that uses/follows SS and knows VB (.NET) would be willing to look over what I have and tell me anything I could do better or I am doing wrong. I am always open to learning new things :)

Anywho, new update soon, about a week or so, so not soon, but soon.

By the way, I continue to be really shocked by the number of downloads - I thought that MAYBE 10 copies would be downloaded at the very most. 58 times so far! Thank you guys, I know that someone out there is using my work :) :-*

-Brandon

EDIT: Notes now protects you from wiping out a text file - when you click New, if there is text in the box that you haven't saved, it will prompt you to ignore the changes, or save now.

EDIT 2: I am done with most of the work except for the "Send Feedback" button on the side panel. After that it will look like a totally finished program, but there are still lots of things I want to tweak (the insanely fast progress bar for SystemCare, for example). Small, easy things, but they finish it off. (Alpha 3, that is)

Wouldn't it be easier just using an online website such as www.downloadyoutubevideos.com and then using VLC to watch them (assuming you don't want to get into techy details on converting and whatnot)?

Seriously, why waste the disk space on a program and/or addon that you will remember to use once or twice, then forget about?? :-\

(FYI: Searching "Download Youtube Videos" on Google turns up DownloadYouTubeVideos.com as the top result, just in case you were to forget or something (I had to look it up myself, because I forgot the URL))

Living Room / Computer mods: What odd things have you done?
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on July 13, 2008, 04:40 AM »
Alright, I type with a sore and somewhat bloody finger due to my last undertaking of using my computer for more than a computer. This one is a bit strange (and I do some weird stuff sometimes! ;D)

My yearly PC mod (I remove it at fall/winter because it is no longer needed):
Computer air conditioning/fan (with instructions)
Spoiler
I took an old fan out of my now-dead HP computer, and plugged it in - this thing spins at least 2x faster than the 120MM fans in my computer (those are $20 each, too) - hence the bloody/sore finger (I did it twice, the first drew blood). This fan has a REALLY long cable, being about 8" long!
On NewEgg a few months ago I bought some 4-pin to 4-pin+3-pin (fan) connector dealies. They take an existing 4-pin power connector and steal part of the power for the fan, then allow you to continue the power strand along. These things have about a 6" cable.

Now for some reason, probobally my fault, the "Front Fan" mobo fan connector doesn't work on this PC anymore (it is worth noting that I almost slammed a hole into the motherboard trying to connect the fan to the port before continuing on farther in my explanation - the needlenose slipped and... well, thank god I have a good PC case ;D). So here is what I did (and you can do for ~$10 from Newegg, plus shipping and tax of course):

  • Remove side panel (duh!)
  • Take power from 3rd hard drive cable, route it through fan adapter, and back into hard drive (you can use any 4-pin connector to do this)
  • With side panel off, position fan where you would like it to blow (obviously)
  • Position fan cable to go INTO the door jam where your door slides on (this does NOT work for the old school "snap closed" PC doors, sorry!) - make sure the cable will not block the door until the very front, so it will be the least noticeable; IT WILL FORCE YOUR DOOR TO STAY OPEN (a millimeter or so, but some people are picky...)
  • Set the door out of the way if you haven't already
  • Connect fan connector to 3-pin connector on the router you installed earlier. THE FAN WILL START SPINNING if the PC is on, so WATCH YOUR FINGERS! (I should take my own advice)
  • Move the to the side a bit, and slide the door over to the PC, and slide it on as normal
  • Stop before you smash the fan power cable and make any last minute movements to get it to sit in the jam, but where it won't be crushed
  • Close the door to your liking
  • Position the fan to your liking
  • Optional: If you have a REALLY fast fan like mine that literally knocks itself over, put it in front of your monitor or something
  • Enjoy your new A/C

So fellow DC'ers, what have you done to change your computer (physically)?*
*Beating/smashing/crushing computer does not count as a modification ;D
700
I tried the app, and printed out the page in Firefox - little did I know that FF scaled the GIF down to ~33% of its size, so when I scanned it back in @ 300DPI, it looked like my handwriting, but everything is pretty much uppercase. I am keeping the font, however, as it does look like my casual writing (minus the gigantic "O" vs "O" (capital), but... well I guess that is my normal handwriting) ;D

I love it, great job! :-*
