Sorry, duplication: I didn't realise that here was a separate post about this Raytheon software, on DCF: Rapid Information Overlay Technology (Riot) - Tracks Users from SNSes

I did the same thing.  I looked but didn't see anything new posted....

I once took a tax prep course from H&R. I was appalled once they started their recruiting efforts about halfway through on about four of of us who were the students most quickly "getting it" (We all had degrees in either accounting or finance - so us catching on quicker than others was no surprise.)

They kept emphasizing how you had to be "quick" and churn out returns as quickly as possible to maximize volume. And they also repeatedly did the big pitch for all the additional money you could make by pushing H&R's other services and investment opportunities to your "clients." Something we gathered you were also required to do.

All of us told them to forget it.

Tax prep services shouldn't operate using a fast-food restaurant business model. At least in not in my opinion. And I find blatant "upselling" to be one of the most obnoxious business practices out there. Especially when it's being directed at people who lack sufficient background to even understand what they're being sold half the time.

But that's me I guess.

FWIW I haven't listened to, touched, bought, or even looked at anything from H&R Block since that experience.

My experience with H&R has taught me they are a big ripoff.  Some fresh out of high school gal (that I knew) that didn't know a tax code from a computer code.  All she did was input information into the computer with no knowledge of how any of it actually worked.  Ask a question about a deductible and it's off to the help files to try to find the answers, which usually turned up nothing.  Wound up getting $40 back and had to pay H&R $55......
And when they quote you a price for their services, it's ONLY for the 1040.  Any additional forms will cost you extra, and it's not cheap either.

I still have one indexing search program on my computer, an old copy of Yahoo Desktop Search, which indexes only when I tell it to.  However, I rarely use it.  I find my needs are well met by Everything and FileLocatorPro.

I turned off all indexing services on my computer and search software and it runs much faster.  In the long run, unless you do massive searches everyday (ie; searching the whole drive instead of folders), indexing will take up more of your time than the occasional search without indexing.
BTW, I've been using Agent Ransack for years now.  Much faster than the OS search with a lot more search options and easier to use....

General Software Discussion / Re: Avast Installs Chrome

I just set up a new VM, installed Avast, and it installed Chrome, but never prompted me anywhere about it. It just installed it without asking. Now, I was going to install Chrome anyways, but... (From the download at CNET.)
It's because you downloaded from CNET.  They have a nasty habit of adding crapware and other software for a profit.  Download Avast from the Avast website and stay clear of CNET.

In Texas, food isn't taxed.  I don't think it's right to tax food, something that everyone needs to survive.  It's just wrong in my view.  However, the water is taxed, which I strongly disagree with since it's another substance much needed for survival.
Now onto another thing that you have to pay taxes on in Texas......  The AIR!  Yep, if your a pilot like myself, you have to pay a Texas surcharge tax every time you take off.  The only waiver is if it's a training flight, then your not taxed.  This has caused a lot of money to disappear because pilots make it a point NOT to fly into Texas, therefore spending their money in other states that don't have this unfair tax.  Aviation fuel in Texas is already heavily taxed, now add an Air Tax and, well, you get the picture.....

Congress Will Battle Over Internet Privacy in 2013

Last year, we saw more battles in Congress over Internet freedom than we have in many years as user protests stopped two dangerous bills: the censorship-oriented SOPA, and the privacy-invasive Cybersecurity Act of 2012. In 2013, Congress will tackle several bills--both good and bad--that could shape Internet privacy for the next decade. Here's what's ahead in the upcoming Congress.

Podcasting Community Faces Patent Troll Threat; EFF Wants to Help

Another day, another patent troll. The troubling trend of suing downstream users and content providers really makes us mad. First it was the app developers, then those who scan documents to email. Now, the latest outrage: podcasters. EFF wants to help organize those facing the threat so that we can gauge the size of the problem and hopefully help people find counsel and a way to work together in response.

Facing Down A Copyright Troll in Federal Appeals Court

Copyright troll Righthaven LLC just doesn't know when to stand down. Faced with six district court judges determining it didn't have the right to sue people over copyrights it didn't own, it turned to a higher power: the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. On Tuesday, EFF appeared before that court to argue against Righthaven on behalf of one of its victims.

Rebooting Computer Crime Law: What Needs To Be Fixed

In the wake of social justice activist Aaron Swartz's tragic death, Internet users around the country are taking a hard look at the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA), the federal anti-hacking law. The CFAA's greatest flaw is that makes it illegal to access a computer without authorization or in a way that exceeds authorization, but doesn't clearly explain what that means. This murkiness gives the government lots of leeway to be creative in bringing charges.

Can the FCC Create Public "Super WiFi Networks"?

Contrary to some recent suggestions in the media, the government is not creating its own "super WiFi network." But its plans will indeed make awesome new WiFi networks possible. Technically, what the FCC is actually trying to do is increase the amount of open spectrum that is available for WiFi networks of all sorts, and for other "unlicensed" uses. This is a very good idea. Increasing the amount of unlicensed spectrum will lead to better functioning routers, tablets, laptops, and smartphones--and to a host of other new products in the marketplace.

Found Deals and Discounts / Powershell Plus Now Free

Review: PowerShell Plus is a free IDE for PowerShell users

PowerShell Plus is an IDE (Interactive Development Environment) for PowerShell, which is Microsoft's high-end scripting/batch processing language. As such, it is focused on the needs of the network admins, DBAs, and so forth, who regularly use PowerShell, as opposed to a more generic IDE such as Eclipse. Formerly a $200 commercial program, PowerShell Plus is now released as freeware, with no feature limits, upsells, or other gotchas that sometimes accompany a pay-to-free conversion.

Just about all of the convenience stores have payphones mounted on the outside or inside of the buildings.  It's just no one really notices them anymore unless you see someone talking on them.  There also seems to be payphones by laundrymats.  Guess they figure if you can't afford your own washer/dryer, you can't afford a phone.....

Yeah, nothing to see here, really.

This has been doable for quite a while, and even outside Sekrit Forensikz, there's freely available tools to do it. The Elcomsoft program just makes it a bit more convenient (even the Firewire-DMA attack that can be used on a computer that has been locked isn't new).

I remember something similar to this back in the Amiga days.

Indeed - this was a fun bit of detective work :)

That explains a few things then.  I never coded that wav file, it was already coded when I downloaded it.  I've got such a large collection of those wav files from the past that it's hard for me to keep up with, especially since I've slept many times since then...   ;)

The brick and mortar shops think this is great.  Well, it is for them, because now you'll wind up paying more for an item online than you would locally after shipping, handling and tax.
It's bad enough that we are all overtaxed as it is, and our good ol' gov't gives it away by the billions to other countries, now the states can get in on the action.
Here's one I just can't understand, buy a car, pay state taxes.  Yeah, understandeable.  Now sell that car a year later and whoever buys it has to pay state taxes all over again.  How is this fair that you have to pay taxes on something that was already taxed once?
When Amazon sells something, they are already paying federal taxes figured into the price.  Now let's add state taxes to the mix, and now those online deals aren't such a good deal anymore.

Gee, I didn't mean to start such an ordeal over one lousy wav file.  Anyhow, I'm uploading the original (I do believe) codec that I installed.  This is a self-installing zip file, but you need to rename it back to .exe.

Tinman57: you don't need any "permission" to install XP, you simply disable Secure Boot... which you kinda have to, anyway, since XP doesn't support UEFI boots.

XP has to "Phone Home" to "Get Permission" from MS to work, otherwise it goes into a reduced function that won't allow you to use the entire OS.  Kind of like a "Safe Mode".  If you have the XP upgrade OS like I do, you can ONLY use it on this motherboard.  If I was to change out the motherboard, MS would NOT give the OS permission to operate at it's full capacity.

HOWEVER, I do have some "Workarounds" for this problem if I should need it in the future.....

I remember in the late 70's, the CD's the military used were about the size of a garbage can lid.  And I don't think they stored as much information as a regular CD does today.

I'm going to guess no
1GB drive 20 years ago and today.

The ones in the 70's were twice the size of that one and solid silver colored.
