General Software Discussion / Re: how can I convert swf files to avi?
« Last post by Curt on July 16, 2007, 02:41 PM »
cdblu, there is no file format that can make this swf file play any easier. Any problems must be in your Internet browser / browser's apps, or PC, as swf is The Smallest video file format you can have - flash or not.
6702
Will it search for copies of the relevant programs on the PC before searching the Internet? I guess not. Maybe then, it will be a good idea - instead of just editing the previous post - to also tell what programs now are part of AutoMaintenance ?

I had a second look at your flash file and I am positive it is all right. The file is 7.29 MB which not is much   consider it is almost ten minutes. If you want it  I can mail it to you  as a screensaver, but it is 7.17 MB so you will need a @gmail or Pando account. They are free.

Edit: DragAndDrop.zip : 6.88MB

I am not too sure there is anything wrong with the DragDrop swf file. The memory usage in each of GreenBrowser, Firefox, Maxthon, K-Meleon and Internet Explorer 7 - each at a time showing the flash - was merely some 300 kb, not mb.
300.000 k = 300 Kilo

Brandon; on the Maze Craze Homepage you link to http://www.headlightsoftwareinc.com/ - but none of my browsers can find that page. Is the company / server dead, or the link wrong?
6706
One more question  -  on a technicality: mitzevo used the word "copy", so I ask   if Windows will accept the action if I use the option "move to" instead? In my imagination there will be no settings for a little while   if I move   instead of copy?
6707
..I find its after you have/use 2 accounts, then it (for whatever reason) thinks the 2nd account is there (even though it was the admin, or an old deleted one) so it gives you a choice. .. EDIT: Never mind, you fixed it already
-wreckedcarzz (July 15, 2007, 01:22 PM)

Well, I do mind, because it seems likely to also happen to me, if I follow the advice from mitzevo about creating a new user account, right?
6708
... to completely remove the username, just create a new user (which will be your new account), copy all the \Documents and Settings\OldUserName to your .\NewUserName.. After you have copied all your old username settings to your new username.. You can assign admin (well you should have done that when you created the new account) priv's to your new account.. Then delete the old username..

 :'(    :tellme:   :-[

  • create a new user/account) and assign admin priv's to your new account
  • copy all the \Documents and Settings\OldUserName (= \karar)
  • paste into your ..\NewUserName..
  • delete the old username..

- is that  it?  :tellme:

What about the many GB allocated to karar's System Recovery?
6709
Oh dear; do I really have to remember stuff like that (it really is hard to remember stuff you don't understand)?! I just took the PC into use, didn't I - I will have to figure out what to answer! First: I live alone so I don't log in - does anyone do that? I guess I have auto-logon. The name on top of Start is Curt, and in "My Computer" the not-shared folder is  "My Documents (Curt)" - and I didn't put the "(Curt)" there, Windows must have done that. But in Sys-Info it says: Username: DIT-4A811B5B42A\karar

Did I answer the question that I don't know how to answer??
 :tellme:

This leads me to a question on a maybe-not-so-different matter I also have been missing: When I bought this PC I didn't have the money to buy an installation CD but merely had to get a preinstalled version. Whoever set this up   apparently had the name   karar, because that is the name of the %username% directory. I feel annoyed every time I see it. Can I somehow change the username and still keep everything in order?

 :tellme:
6711
You are quite right, tinjaw, this (too) was something that I have been missing!
Thanks a lot for the enlightenment!

I am confused. Why do you call this a small change? Of course it is a small thing to move a folder, you move the thing, but what about all the programs you are going to install in the future? You know that many programs are hardwired to make a folder in My Documents\, user or all users. I know nothing but cannot understand how this still will be a small change when the new programs install in a directory you kind of don't have - will they all find the new location?? I don't know, but the only way out of this that I can think of (if you run NTFS, not FAT32) is to use hard-links / junctions.

Read this DC thread, or even better: study the content of this page (where you can download the very fine HardLinkShellExt from the bottom line -Hermann Schinagl has been updating it many times since May 1999 (Last Updated March 25th 2007, Version 2.700) and I expect it surely must be bugfree.) - or: download Alax.Info NTFS Links; it is also said to be very fine.

(Edit: confusing typo, and clicked "notify me of replies")

My problems with the Startup Delayer update began at first reboot: one program had disappeared (and didn't start); one entry said the program was missing (but started all the same), and one entry said the program was all right, but didn't start. At PC shutdown there were all sorts of problems with programs not shutting down and popping up boxes to be clicked. Of course some of this may be due to the fact that anothe prorgram was installed at the same time, but I have removed that program and re-installed two others, and still the shutdown procedure is unstable.

yksyks; wow! - yes, please! I would very much like you to mail the file to (now deleted)

Thanks a lot!

Celeron? Ewww, handicapped cache :( (but cheap - we do like that).

Can Celeron D's cache be improved, or do I have to get a new processor / motherboard / PC ??

I have no idea, but I would think multi core machines would be a great plus at pc startup? I am right now thinking on EVEREST and Outlook which I used to have placed in Start. I was using a startup manager and had to give both Everest and Outlook a full minute each to start, before the next program could be launched - but if my PC is all calm these two programs will both cold-start in less than ten seconds! I imagine such behavior at startup improves a lot on multicore?

Nice update ;)

- no, it wasn't!!

Several problems was introduce to my pc with this update!
I have written the support and asked for a link to the old version.

... isn't sanboxie also good thing against viruses and other malware?

 :D

Yes, but being used to NOD32 and such, I seldom think about this risk.  ;)

Actually, I am more interested in First Defense ISR - be it from Raxco ?? (they show it, but do they sell it?) or from Horizon - but I thought the virtual thing would be more interesting to prevent-minded people, as BufferZone is about preventing but First Defense is about repairing. But repairing in milliseconds, that is (ISR = Immediate System Recovery)! But so far I have been troubled by the asking price, $69.

Edit: I should add that my interest in the subject in the first place, is how to fix the result of bad BETAs and such; and not to prevent vira - NOD32 and the others will do that, I trust.

Just by-the-by: in doing this I discovered a great use for PAD files... It was pretty simple to load in the URL of an Application's PAD file (LaunchBar commander for example) and provide a method from the Database to query the PAD file to see if an update has been released and download it if it has! Essentially that provides an update check not provided in the programme  :)

Perry, are you able to launch an auto-upgrader for all programs ???
 :tellme:

What would we need to have? What would you need to make it happen?

Welcome back, CleverCat! Sure we can all understand why you have chosen to use this soft, clever CAT ..  :P - sorry, that really was cheap  :-[

-
http://www.fnprg.com...ftcatplus/index.html
The auto catalog function (and the image function) is for the PRO version only. Did you really start to type your program's info manually? I had a look at SoftCAT but decided that the PRO version is the only one of interest, because typing all these info manually? Not even for a single program! But I do think the Pro version seems to be a very fine program - though I have not yet been ready to pay $30, and with some 300 programs I see no realistic need for the free version.

Show us one of your pictures, CleverCat!!

How can I say this? I understand the benefits you get from using virtual browsing and virtual installations; its just that I only have little reason to use it myself! 1): My licenses for Outpost Pro 4 and NOD32 will run for yet another year - and I will hate to throw that money out of the window. 2): I have not excatly stopped trying programs no one else would touch, but I am much more careful than I used to be (taking a snapshot of the registry before installing a new program), and 3): I no longer download files I couldn't show to my wife (had I had any). Sorry for mentioning reason number 3, but sadly it is a very common reason for using virtual solutions.

But the most important factor and the one we care about here is that the virtual solution by far is the most secure solution. And you, being the careful type, will not find any other solution as safe.

I never tried sandboxie, so I wouldn't know - the virtual world is quite new to me - but I did try BufferZone, and for the ease of use I would prefer PRO over FREE.
