Living Room / Re: Recommend some music videos to me!
« Last post by Deozaan on March 20, 2010, 08:26 PM »
Stick with this (despite the vacuous song!) as the video takes an unexpected and delightfully surreal twist (or two).

Wow, that's the first time I've seen a "this video has been blocked in your country" errors. I guess EMI doesn't like showing videos for free in the USA.

EDIT: I think this is the same video, and it works for me:

EDIT 2: That video is freaky and weird!

One of my recurring dreams I have is that my teeth become loose or fall out.

everyone has those -- i have no idea why.
Probably just when we're needlessly worrying about stuff in our sleep.

Anyway, back on topic:

This one will leave you scratching your head. I have no idea what this guy is so happy about:

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: usb drive backup program

I wonder if someone could just make a little script that creates an archive of the entire USB drive and saves it to a customizable folder (changed in settings.ini or something) and then you could just place the compiled script, settings, and an autorun.inf right on the USB drive so that when you insert it, auto-run will run the script.

Have you ever had a dream that you can play the guitar effortlessly and produce beautiful music and it happens in your dreams like it just flows out of you without requiring any concentration or planning.. this video made me think of such dreams.

Lucky. My dreams are weird. One of my recurring dreams I have is that my teeth become loose or fall out. Just happened to me again last night. Good thing I have a dentist appointment soon. ;)

the way to fix the 7-zip file associations problem is run the gui as administrator and set the file associations, then close that instance and you should be set
i ran into that problem myself, it seems that win7 will only let admin set file associations (also affects things such as media player classic)

Thanks! Worked like a charm!

Living Room / Re: Command & Conquer Copies Ubisoft's Awful DRM

Well, I haven't heard anything about the game until reading that article (and some of the comments), but apparently it requires an internet connection because it's like an MMO or something:

Here's the thing though, Ubisoft does it for piracy, EA does it to keep track of your leveling experience and unlocks. Singleplayer (which is arguably more fun in co-op anyways) experience goes towards your Skirmish and Multiplayer leveling, and vice versa. It's actually a smart move since it's more persistent like a standard MMO and cuts down on people who hack to get level 20 and dominate level 3 folks, but of course people complain about the whole "online only".

Does it have SecuROM? No. Do people treat it as such? Yes.
-Keerosene

It still sucks, but I guess people don't expect to be able to play World of Warcraft without an internet connection, do they?

I think that you can become "successful" by cheating, but eventually it will backfire. I guess you could call it Karma.

But I also believe that the truly successful people/businesses are honest.

I guess what I'm saying is this: There are good and bad people out there no matter where you go. Some big corporations are bad (cheat, steal, lie, etc.), and some are good (honest, lawful, charitable, etc.). Some rich people are bad, some are good. Some poor people are bad, some are good.

As with most things in life, only the bad are considered newsworthy, so you think there are a lot more bad than there are good.

Kids who say "like" in every sentence. I want to stab my ears with pencils.
Have to agree with Zaine, though. I can't stand hearing "like' in every sentence, either.

I remember looking at a note one of my classmates was writing and what bothered me was that her writing was just like her speech. In pencil: "So, like, I was wondering, like, what was up with, like, that?" I may say things frequently that I don't consciously realize, but when I'm writing I know to leave those things out.

I didn't find any right away that said that most software runs well on 64-bit though as usual it is more common to find articles about problems than no problems! Since this box is just about four years old now I was planning to either buy a new one sometime in the coming year or possibly rebuild this one.

My PC is also 4 years old and has a worse processor than yours (Athlon 64 3500+) and runs Win 7 64-bit very well, even on just 2 GB of RAM. The only software I've had any trouble with is 7-Zip, but that's actually the 64-bit edition of 7-Zip. For some reason it won't make itself the default program for any of the various archive files, so I have to open the 7-Zip GUI first, then navigate to the archive.

Anyway, I'm just chiming in to say that Windows 7 runs well even on "older" hardware. And that the 64-bit edition seems very stable to me. I can't imagine it making your system run worse, especially if you get more RAM out of it.

Living Room / Re: Anyone playing Mass Effect 2 game yet?
« Last post by Deozaan on March 17, 2010, 10:21 PM »
There a was a game wrapped around such concept in its entirety, Dungeon Siege. As expected, letting the game play itself was pretty boring, though part of the blame lies in the game as a whole, as it ends up being not exactly my idea of "fun" if you take a more active role, which is necessary as the AI rarely makes good decisions regarding path finding and enemy targeting.

I think I played a bit of Dungeon Siege and I don't remember the AI playing for me at all. Was it a setting you had to activate in the menus or was auto-play on by default?

ps.
If anyone wants my copy of Mass Effect 2, i'm willing to send it out; i haven't activated the downloadable content, so that is available as well.  US only please, just to save me shipping costs.  If more than one person wants it i will send it to a person who has written a coding snack or mini-review.

I'll take it. For those that played the first one, am I missing anything (besides importing save data) if I don't play the first?

DC Gamer Club / Sniper Elite for $2 on Steam

Hello,

I personally have never played this game and don't know anything about it, but mouser is always talking about how it's one of his favorite games ever, so it caught my attention today when I saw that it is on sale on Steam all this week for just $2.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/3700/

I bought it, but can't play it since my gaming PC doesn't have an internet connection at this time, so I can't download it yet.

IT BETTER BE GOOD MOUSER! I bought it on your recommendation alone!

I believe it was Milgram's Experimentw.

Living Room / Re: Windows doesn't recognize HDD.
« Last post by Deozaan on March 17, 2010, 06:04 PM »
Interestingly enough I'm having the same problem with another drive from another computer, however this time I do care about that data on the drive and would like to try to restore the partition headers.

maybe partition table is broken since Ubuntu also can't read the HDD info in full, try something like TestDisk to view/fix partition headers. most likely there's bad sectors abound, as you've already mentioned.

I can't figure out how to get this to work in linux (from a liveCD) and I don't think/know if the Windows version would work if Windows doesn't recognize the drive. Any tips?

For some reason I'm reminded of Commander Keen from the description, yet at the same time it doesn't fit.

Another game I know of that prominently features medusa heads is Castlevania, but I didn't know there were any PC versions of the game. And there certainly wouldn't be a jetpack in Castlevania.

Wasn't there a Doom-like game that took place in spaceships? I seem to remember that having a lot of blue and weird aliens/monsters. Ah, but then again, I suppose FPS doesn't really fit the description either.

I guess I'm not helpful.

Hard drives are cheap! In fact, I'll have a batch of 500GB drives just sitting around pretty soon as I'm consolidating onto a couple of 2TB drives. So if anyone wants one and can pay shipping... :D

I'd be willing to take you up on that offer. See PM. :)

Well I left before the thing finished with the check disk and when I came back the screen was blank and wouldn't turn back on after moving the mouse. Also the box would beep after several seconds, making noises as if the box was trying to go through POST, but displaying nothing on screen. So I cut the power to the machine and turned it back on and the HDD didn't show up in the BIOS.

Just out of curiosity - do you really want to trust that hard drive - even if it does successfully format?  :)

Well, I had hopes when I installed it that it wasn't really bad. But now that I have an idea of how bad it is, I think I probably ought to just take it back out and... So what do you do with dead hard drives, anyway? Toss them in the dumpster? Take them apart and look at the cool disks inside?

I'm not sure how to interpret the data from Ubuntu's Disk Utility, but I think it said the drive had about 800 bad clusters waiting to be reassigned.

I used GParted from the Ubuntu Live CD to format it to FAT32, then back to NTFS. It showed it still somehow had about 75MB of data used on the partition, so I deleted the partition completely and created a new NTFS partition and it still has the data (though no files show up when browsing the HDDs contents).

So I booted back into Windows and it now shows up in Explorer. I'm running a full scandisk/check disk/whatever on it now. Thanks!

I wonder what the phantom 75MB is.

I'm curious about why this happens this way:

Ball Duo: Shoots out 1 extra ball so there are 2 total.
Ball Trio: Shoots out 3 extra balls so there are 4 total.

Just got to level 6 for the first time. What a fun level!

On level 7, I cleared away all the red pegs, but I had one ball left and it let me shoot again, then it gave me a game over.

I just came across something interesting: I hit the final red bar and then the ball ricocheted and hit a green bar. The green bar did nothing at all.
