By the way, im not much of a mobile user, or i probably would have known that there is an popular free (ad-free donationware) android app that does pretty much everything WhenLast does and is more polished; it's called Regularly.  Support donationware coders -- if you need an app like WhenLast you should definitely check out Regularly.

After a reminder has been 'activated', but no response has been made, I'd expect it to signal again after the original time has past. I realize this is one of the discussion items, above, but it (now) kinda feels natural, after some testing/use

if a reminder is ignored, you should be reminded again every time another HALF of the interval passes (but no more frequently than 1 minute).

The resolution is now minutes, and planned to be defined in days, but I'd find it quite useful if it could (also) be set in hours, or maybe even in minutes. Maybe the unit of delay (minutes, hours, days, weeks) should be a parameter?
done.

Updated; a few small bug fixes, but more importantly, you can now set the units for reminders (from seconds to years); this should make it possible for people to test the reminder feature but also to start using it for real reminder time periods.  You can also now toggle the reminder option for an entry without having to zero-out the remindertime.

EDIT Again - I've added enough tabs to allow them to scroll on the screen, and Aquarium is still cutting off the number of tasks.
yeah it seems a bit of a quirk in the tab element -- ill see what i can do.

New versions are uploaded for testers.

This version has reminders, but to facilitate testing, instead of operating on the scale of days they operate on the scale of minutes.
That makes them unusable for real life reminders, so this version is just for testing them out.
I will later convert the reminders/timers from minutes to days.

Some general notes on reminders:

  • For testing purposes, the Last Time events show not just the date performed, but how long it's been since you performed a task; for testing purposes this is now in seconds+minutes, but like reminders it will be changed to days when the non-testing version is released.
  • Im still not sure what info to display and what options i need to give user; on phones where space is tight some decision will have to be made.
  • If you are using the app and it is the foreground window, when the reminder time comes for an event, you will see a short toast message on the screen about it, which will fade out.
  • Overdue items will also automatically be listed in a "Reminders" tab; such items will show how long overdue they are.
  • If you are not using WhenLast when an item reminder comes due, you will see an android notification message in your notification area; clicking on that will open the program and bring you to the reminders page.

And this might be a good time to toot our own horn and say thank you to everyone who has donated to the DonationCoder.com website over the last 9+ years.

  • We have always been able to host our own software on our own server and been able to do so even as we started hitting huge numbers of downloads (about a terrabyte per month).
  • We have never bundled anything with any of our downloads -- no adware, crapware, malware, toolbars.. nothing.
  • Other than an occasional experiment -- a month here and there -- the website itself has remained entirely advertisement free.

Those things have been made possible because of the generous donations from normal folks like you who help pay for our $400/month hosting costs.  So, thank you for helping keep DonationCoder clean and annoyance-free.
And a bonus thank you to the volunteers on the forum who help keep the forum fun and free of drama!

Questions about Reminders

So I have some questions about how reminders should behave, and was hoping to get some opinions.

Let's say you create an entry called "Change Smoke Detector Batteries", and set that to remind you in 180 days.

Now 180 days go by without you changing the smoke detector batteries.

So presumably the program will trigger a reminder notification on your phone/tablet, even if you aren't running the program, that will be shown to you the next time you access your phone/tablet.

I'm thinking that clicking on that reminder will bring up the WhenLast program on a page of reminders/overdue items.

Now my question is, what happens if you ignore the notification -- swipe it away.

What more do you expect from the program? Should that be a one-time-only notification that you never get again? Or should it automatically re-remind you again in another week or in another 180 days?

I think a small piece of advice would do everyone good:
Use any site you want to discover and find out about software, but always find the original author's site to download it from.

Next planned feature is timed reminders, so the program can notify you when it's been too long since you did an activity, even when program is not running.

New version with import and export is uploaded to dc server (see url in first post).
I won't be uploading it to google play store for another couple of days until it gets some testing.

Please let me know how it works for you!

Again let me say that the importing function is an import+merge function, so you can export your data, modify it, and then re-import it, and it will merge in your changes, using the most recent version of any entry found between the current vs importing file.
The data file format is pure json; if you want to manually modify entries in a text editor, you should DELETE the lines with ts_mods and ts_modd from any entries that you hand modify, to convince the import process into thinking they have been modified.

RE: Beware of Freeware downloads
The title of this post is exactly what freeware authors fear -- that our software will get a bad reputation because of some bad sites.

The lesson is not to beware freeware -- it's to beware these third party download sites.
ALWAYS go to the source, the author of the software, to find the download.  NEVER trust a third party source unless it is directly linked from the author's web page.

Just a heads up:  Import and Export functionality are now implemented, though not yet uploaded.  I will try to upload new versions in next couple of days after a little more testing.

The best part about the importing+exporting is that it actually keeps track of modification timestamps of items now, and when you import it will smartly merge them.  This means that you can safely export and import repeatedly between devices in order to do a poor man's synchronization, and it will always use the most recent data for each entry (and recreate missing newly added entries, etc.).

The data files are also plain json, so you can easily modify/create data manually and import it in.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Option to toggle uploading from post-capture dialog
« Last post by mouser on January 11, 2015, 11:23 PM »
Perhaps we might be talking past each other -- you know there is a Upload item in the post-capture dialog -- its under the "Send to.." button.

For quick use, as soon as the post-capture dialog shows you can hit: Alt+n then U.

Sorry I should have replied to this earlier.. I like the idea, and I will try to add it -- perhaps a simply toggle in "After Capture" tray menu?

Screenshot Captor / Re: Cutting out an image from it's background..
« Last post by mouser on January 11, 2015, 09:40 PM »
Let me clarify a few things.

By default, when you crop out a background, SC knows that it is transparent, and will save the background as truly transparent.

By default I mean when you use the PNG format (which is capable of saving transparency), and use standard save function in Screenshot Captor.

If you are using the SaveAs function, there is a specific option for whether you want to save transparency in that case.  Similarly, if you save as a bmp or jpg, then you will lose transparency.

So the first thing you need to make a test image using your cropping procedure, and save as normal, and UPLOAD (ATTACH) that image to one of your posts here.  Then we can look at it and tell you if in fact it has background transparency.

Assuming it does, then the next step would be to figure out why the way you are displaying it on your web page is not resulting in what you expect.
